Founding Fathers

Quote:

"Human nature itself is evermore an advocate for liberty. There is also in human nature a resentment of injury, and indignation against wrong. A love of truth and a veneration of virtue. These amiable passions, are the "latent spark"... If the people are capable of understanding, seeing and feeling the differences between true and false, right and wrong, virtue and vice, to what better principle can the friends of mankind apply than to the sense of this difference?"

Kitchen Table Patriots

Sometimes when you stand up to the establishment,
it doesn't always go well.
Bunker Hill - A rabble of patriots up against the most powerful force on the planet. Yea, they lost, but they let the British know that they were a force to be reckoned with.
But that does not mean it is not worth the fight.

There are two ways of interpreting the decision by the Republican State Committee to endorse candidates on Saturday, January 28 at their winter meeting:
  1. The State committee is completely out of touch with the Republican base and especially the grassroots activists (Tea Party) that we should have no respect for them at all.
  2. The fact that there was even a discussion about the appropriateness of endorsing candidates for the primary and that the vote was 200 in favor and 142 against is a sign that the grassroots are beginning the process of changing the political process in Pennsylvania.

We are inclined to believe the second interpretation. As much as we would have liked to have had the PA GOP agree to not endorse and the fact that there was an effort to prevent grassroots leaders from even being in the PA GOP meeting.

There were a dozen or so stories in local media about the controversy over the endorsement process. Here are links to just a few:

There were many grassroots groups that protested the matter (A letter that was given to the Chairman of the PA GOP from these groups is available here). There was also a press conference and a demonstration at the winter meeting.

Does anyone remember anything like this when Pat Toomey ran against Arlen Specter?

We are making a difference. But in order to make a real difference, we need people to get involved in their local committees. To get on the ballot requires 10 signatures from your precinct. We can help with that process. What we need are principled people who are willing to work not only from the outside, but also from the inside where these decisions are made.

Local committee seats are filled during the primary every two years.

State committee seats are filled every four years.

Become a local committee person now ow sign up to work to get a candidate elected now.

We can build a base and run candidates in 2014 for State committee.

This is a long process. We need not only principled individuals, but those with the perseverance to hold on for the long haul.

Here is how Jaime Faucette from Citizens for Constitutional Government put it to a committee person who was thinking of resigning over the issue:

We are not defeated. This was not the war. This was only one battle. And we will persevere to fight another day, and another, and another, committee seat by committee seat, State Committee seat by State Committee seat, in each of our boroughs, townships, and counties, whittling away little by little at this mammoth power structure until in time it crumbles - IF we don't quit now.

The atmosphere is changing. YOU ARE CHANGING IT. But more change is needed.

Here is the way another tea party activist put it:

The people of the movement need to be reminded of what they worked so hard for and this is the time to stand up and "fight the system". This fight is a good thing. It demonstrates true debate and resolution (like how the framers fought over the writing of the constitution) when was the last time we saw Democrats fight over what was best for the people?

There are glimmers of hope. There is a cut in the fabric of "politics as usual".

It will take time to pull back the veil. Grab a knife and grab hold.

WE (that includes YOU) can do this.

Here is the beginning of the letter from the conservative grassroots leaders presented to Chairman Gleason:

Rob Gleason

Chairman, Republican Party of Pennsylvania

112 State Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101

Friday, January 27, 2012

Chairman Gleason,

As grassroots conservative leaders, we are all united in our desire to defeat President Obama and Senator Casey. We were excited by the resounding Republican victories in 2010 and 2011 and the conservative message these candidates espoused.

We are concerned that the Republican State Committee is seeking to make an endorsement in the hotly contested U.S. Senate primary. We believe this would be a mistake as there are many strong candidates in this race.

If you are willing to stand on a street corner with a sign or go to a Townhall meeting and tell politicians how you feel, then you should consider running for your local Republican Committee
NOW

Dear Patriot,

A lot going on this week! I know many of you are heading to CPAC in Washington, DC and I hope to see you there; please email me if you are heading down.

A reminder for our next meeting this Sunday, February 12th, 7pm with Filip Dewinter; I have received some great feedback from many of you in anticipation of this event! Senator Dewinter is the leader of Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest), the main opposition party in Belgium. He will discuss from the front lines the challenges for Western Civilization in Europe and its parallels to the United States. Mr. Dewinter is a leader in the freedom movement in Europe, raising awareness on issues such as immigration reform, national identity and sovereignty and Islamization. This event will be held at The Temperance House, 5 South State Street, Newtown, PA.

Here is a brief clip from FOX news on immigration in Europe...

Two signature gathering events...

Tonight, February 8th, 7-9pm
. Come see a "true copy" of the US Constitution on display at the Moose in Doylestown! This is also a signature gathering event for Ron Paul supporters in Bucks County running for Delegate to the Republican National Convention. More info contact Rob Pepe at robpatozz@live.com. The Moose, 127 East State Street, Doylestown, PA.

Saturday, February 11th, 2-5pm
. Help KTP members Ana Puig, Anastasia Przbylski, Dan McCabe and Jack Merritt run for Delegate to the Republican National Convention! This is a signature gathering event. All Pennsylvania delegates are unbound, so your vote for a presidential candidate can be ignored by the GOP candidates beholden to the party. The KTP candidates are looking to change the GOP from the inside by being committed to reflect the will of Bucks voters. More info contact thekitchentablepatriots@gmail.com. Thomas Jefferson: "Whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers....a nullification of the act is the rightful remedy."

But what IS nullification? How does it happen and work? Since September 2010, the Tenth Amendment Center has been hosting a national tour to educate and activate people on this topic. People are learning the constitutional basis, when it's been used in history, and how it is happening around the country and how YOU can stop DC right in your own state.

The Case Against Obamacare: Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress

Building on decades of Heritage research, The Case Against Obamacare: A Health Care Policy Series for the 112th Congress examines 15 key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Each report:

  • Cites specific sections of the 2,700-page health care law
  • Provides detailed analysis of specific Obamacare provisions
  • Identifies key principles for a better way to reform health care

The unmistakable conclusion of this series is that Obamacare must be fully repealed. Congress cannot build sound market-based health care reform on the flawed foundation of this health care law. Until it can be repealed, Congress must employ its full powers authorized by the Constitution to:

Lou Flanagan, House Bill 934: Voter ID

"My state Rep. Warren Kampf responded to my question about where the Voter ID bill stands in Harrisburg. His response appears at end of this emaiI. It seems clear that unless we apply pressure to the state senate government committee, this bill will go nowhere.
My questions for them are: Where do you stand on the bill? What are you doing to move it out of committee? If you oppose it, tell me why. Who on the committee is against it, and why?

Louis:
Thank you for the email regarding Voter ID (House Bill 934).
The House passed Voted ID on June 23rd. I voted for this bill if you will remember. It is now the responsibility of the Senate to take action to continue to move HB 934 forward.
I would advise you to contact the Senators who comprise the Senate State Government Committee, those in Senate leadership positions and your local Senator to let them know of your desire to move this forward. Also you may ask for an accounting of why this has been held up and not considered.
Please let me know if I can help with other state-related matters.

Voter Cheating

You know, comrades," says Stalin, "that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this - who will count the votes, and how. (Boris Bazhanov's Memoirs of Stalin's Former Secretary,1992, only available in Russian.
Russia's Vladimir Putin is accused of voter fraud and failure to solve problems with health care availability, immigration control, and unsustainable pensions. Sound familiar? Absolutely. Will he lie? Absolutely. But unlike Obama's ACORN, he will probably admit it.

Background

There are several lines of independent evidence for cheating in the 2012 election:

a)     12/30/11, Voter ID: PA House Bill 934

Eric Holder has ordered his staff not to meddle with cases of voter fraud that involve minorities (J. Christian Adams has written widely about such cases), Salina Zito (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) predicted that PA in November '12 will go according to the Philadelphia suburbs, ACORN has both a record for voter scams and operates new sites in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, our State Attorney General is stepping aside, and there is little public information about Mayor Nutter's views on this matter. Meanwhile, there is an early February deadline from our Governor as Republicans in the PA legislature attempt to define a list of acceptable IDs and Democrats cry that minorities and old people can't handle this demand.
I smell more fraud from a bunch- ACORN - already known nationally for fraud and Corbett's February deadline invites some deliberate lapse by the D's...And intrusion by Eric Holder would stall our ID program until after ACORN has done their job for BO ...

b)     Jeffrey Kuhner, Washington Times: BO & Voter ID

"...South Carolina's legislation provides for free ID cards to be given to anyone who needs it. Not one person - white, black or brown - is discriminated against or discouraged from casting a vote at the ballot box. Moreover, the Supreme Court already has ruled on the issue - upholding state voter ID laws. In the 2008 Crawford v. Marion County Election Board decision, the high court held that an Indiana law mandating photo identification at the voting booth was indeed constitutional. If it is good enough for the Supreme Court and the overwhelming majority of the states, then it should be for Mr. Holder as well.
"It isn't. And the reason is simple: The administration is trying to whip up minority frenzy, propagating the myth of widespread ballot suppression..."

c)      Daryl Metcalf, Morning Call: Electoral Integrity (June 18, 2011)

Metcalf is a Republican from Butler County (north of Pittsburgh)
"Pennsylvania has a long and ongoing history of documented voter fraud - pre-dating even the frequently forged signature of Mickey Mouse to at least the election of 1918.
"Of course, no statewide analysis of voter fraud would be complete without briefly documenting the deeply rooted influence of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

d)     Christopher Freind, PA Water Cooler:  No ID, No Vote,... Comprende? (June 21, 2011)

"I am not wealthy, but have recently acquired twenty two domiciles throughout Philadelphia. My real estate prowess has afforded me a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our citizens.
"I can vote twenty-two times.
"You see, I have staked out prime locations, from a cardboard box under the Walt Whitman Bridge to a culvert on Cobbs Creek Parkway to a burnt out shell at 7th and Diamond. Yes, technically, habitating at these locations makes me 'homeless,' but I much prefer the term 'voter-enfranchised.' When you have such a love of democracy, how can anyone have a problem with people who want to vote multiple times, especially the homeless? (Although, in fairness, dead people should only be able to vote once).

e)     11/7/2011, PA ACORN Lives

"Pennsylvania. ACORN PA has become Pennsylvania Communities Organizing for Change (PCOC) and Pennsylvania Neighborhoods for Social Justice (PNSJ).Both were incorporated on January 8, 2010. On July 26, 2010, PCOC filed for another name - Action United - and the organizations now operate under this name. Current board members and staff of these organizations with former ACORN affiliations include:
* Lucille Prater Holliday, chair (ACORN member and Democratic state house candidate)
* Pat Worrell, co-chair (Chester County, PA ACORN chairman)
* Rosa Chacon, secretary/treasurer (ACORN leader in Harrisburg, PA, profiled in
ACORN's 2005 annual report)
* Fabrico Rodriguez, board member (executive director of Philadelphia Jobs with
Justice)
* Craig Robbins, executive director (ACORN regional director in Philadelphia, PA)
* Maryellen Deckard, southwest regional director (head organizer for ACORN PA)
* Jennifer England, communications director (Pittsburg ACORN spokesperson)
Action United is located  at 846 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130 and 5907 Penn Avenue, Pittsburg(h), PA 15206. The Action United website is www.actionunited.org.
http://www.judicialwatch.org/files/documents/2011/acornspecialreport08222011.pdf

There is even a Secretary of State project in which leftist groups attempt to bias state elections so that "liberal" Secretaries of State are elected. http://truethevote.org/news/does-your-vote-really-count; http://truethevote.org/news/what-is-the-secretary-of-state-project.
There must be some benefit to Republicans if they ignore voter fraud. For example, my acquaintance publishes lists of Republicans who take contributions from unions and refusing to vote against union interests. And conservative Lowman Henry has spoken about the legislative impasse, particularly in the State Senate, produced by about twenty-five who get their money from organized labor.
Thus, Nicole Marrone's conclusion is still valid as is Christopher Freind's:
"The city of Philadelphia is known for many things: The Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks, water ice, and Santa Claus-booing Eagles fans. But if research that I conducted in 2006 is still accurate today, Philadelphia should also be known for all-inclusive voting - that is, voting regardless of whether one has a pulse or is otherwise eligible to cast a vote..." http://pjmedia.com/blog/small-sample-of-philly-voter-rolls-reveals-hundreds-of-ineligible-names-pjm-exclusive/
There is a bright light on our horizon even though Salena Zito asserted that Pennsylvania electoral votes will depend on turn out in the Philadelphia suburbs:

"Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter didn't mince words after four kids were shot and three killed in Philadelphia Tuesday night.
"The first way to stop this kind of stuff is for young people to be home when they're supposed to be home, and for adults not to act like idiots and assholes out in the streets of our city shooting at kids in a car," Nutter told FOX 29...
A spokesperson for the mayor told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Nutter stood by his statement.
"He said what he said. He was clear about it, and he meant it. He said what everybody else was thinking," said spokesman Mark McDonald..."
http://dailycaller.com/2012/01/12/philly-mayor-dont-act-like-idiots-and-assholes/

What are Mayor Mike's reactions to fraud? Does he value "value" above "deals"?
Meanwhile, many Pennsylvanians look to Harrisburg to pass a "Voter ID" law that requires each of us to carry a card with our photo and address on it. Our Governor also says that he needs the law in place by the first week of February if it is to be used this coming November.
On the other hand, I recall my son's friends in college fattening their wallets by selling bogus photo ID to students who wanted to buy liquor. I'm sure ACORN knows how to do such things.
The ID cards will make cheating a bit more difficult and more expensive for organizers and possibly, but not necessarily, less frequent. And the rest of us will pay the bills for cheaters...

PA implementing ObamaCare exchanges

I wanted to update you on the exchange situation.  First, unfortunately we are getting started late in the game.  Having spoken with 4 different legislators (Rep Saylor, Boyd, Bear, and Sen Waugh), I believe the general sense on their part is that they want to be prepared to set up an exchange if SCOTUS doesn't  declare ObamaCare unconstitutional.

Their reasoning for supporting the exchange is that PA will have more control if PA sets up the exchange rather than the feds.  We have been arguing that in fact: the exchange structure and operation is dictated by the feds, through law and regulation, regardless if the state sets it up or not; that whatever little "control" a PA would have does not mitigate any of the true horrors of the law; establishing the exchange legitimizes PPACA and undercut PA's federal lawsuit against PPACA, creates more PA expense and government, scedes state sovereignty, misses an opportunity to block the law and to have standing for further legal action.  (please see attached documents if you want more explanation).

We have more legislator visits planned, but it is clear to me that none of the legislators thus far will take on this fight.  We must generate the grass roots response to move them to do so.  It is disgusting that our Republican Governor and legislature can't pass meaningful right to work legislation, LCB reform, PA TPK Commission reform, school reform, etc but unless we respond in a big way, will make PA government bigger, make PA government poorer, harm PA citizen liberty and health by implementing an exchange.

I have contacted Campaign for Liberty to see if they are interested in coordinating efforts to stop the exchange.  I will also contact the PA Manufacturer's Association and the Chamber of Commerce, both of whom support repeal of PPACA, also for potential coordination of activities.

We are working on an on-line petition rejecting PPACA and the exchanges for PA physicians to sign and ultimately deliver by several physicians to Harrisburg.

On Wednesday, I participated in a debate put on by the Lehigh Valley Coalition for Health Care Reform (Donna Rovito).  Leo Knepper and I presented the anti-exchange positition while a rep from the PA Dept of Insurance and Dr Schmeltz of the PA Medical Society presented the for pro position.  For what it is worth, I believe we had the more compelling argument.

I welcome any thought you all have.

This exchange is going to happen unless we act together in a big way.

PATRIOTS,

All of these state committee positions are up for election in 2014 for a four year term. However right now we are trying to find people to run for county precinct committee person in Chester County and around the state. Anybody that gets elected this April will have a powerful voice in endorsing the state committee candidates in January 2014. So we need to get constitutional conservatives to run for precinct committee right now. This 2 minute video explains the importance the precinct committee person:

Anyone, that is interested in making a difference needs to act now and get on the ballot for the Primary election. In order to do that they need to get a petition from voter services in West Chester and get 10 signatures (ideally 20-30) by Feb 14 only one week away. Once the deadline has passed this valuable opportunity to make a difference will be lost for another two years.

As you can see the entire Chester County delegation on state committee voted to endorse Steve Welch. The governor told Val DiGiorgio that he wanted Welch and Val who is a lobbyist with ties to the administration does whatever the Governor says. The grass roots is locked out of the process and the only way in to the decision making process is to be a precinct committee person. By the way the committee persons not only endorse candidates they can also elect a new Party Chairman at the State and County level.

If ANYBODY is interested in pursuing this, have them get in touch with me immediately. Thanks.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Conservative,

If I told you that the Pennsylvania Republican Party threw members of the Tea Party out of the PA State Convention, threatened those Tea Partiers with arrest, threw their petitions in the trash, and then endorsed a recent Democrat who voted for Obama as our candidate for Senate, you wouldn't believe it.

But that's exactly what happened last weekend at the Pennsylvania Republican Convention.

My name is Sam Rohrer. In the race to replace Senator Bob Casey, I am the only life-long conservative Republican with a proven voting history, and I need your help to stand against 'Establishment' Republicans.

You see, here in Pennsylvania, the GOP often makes a formal endorsement before the Primary. Essentially, they try to tell primary voters who to vote for. Then they deny all the other candidates access to party voter lists and opportunities to speak to or to circulate literature at party events. They even use party money to run negative ads against other "non-endorsed" Republicans that dare to run against them. Worst of all, the Republican County Committees are told that if they don't enforce all of this, they'll have their charter revoked from the Republican Party!

This is an outrageous thing to do to the grassroots. Will you help me fight back?

We launched an online petition, urging the chairman of the state GOP to stay out of the primary and let the people decide. Nearly 1,600 people from across Pennsylvania signed this petition in just a little under a week. When the members of the Tea Party went to present these 1,600 petitions, the Pennsylvania GOP staff refused to let them deliver their petitions, had them THROWN OUT of the building by hotel security, and then literally threw their petitions in the trash. I was shocked - and angered. The Tea Party folks were told that if they came back they would be arrested!

After throwing the Tea Partiers and their petitions out, the Republican Party proceeded to endorse a candidate who admits he voted for Obama in the 2008 Primary. He also wrote a check to a liberal Democrat who later ran against our conservative Republican Senator, Pat Toomey in 2010!

Endorsing a recent Democrat who supported Obama alienates Tea Partiers, freedom-loving people, and everyone else we need to defeat Senator Bob Casey. This is suicide for the Republican Party.

I am the only life-long Constitutional Republican with a consistent voting history in this race who can win. Two of the current candidates were Democrats until recently. That's not good enough.

I am a proud Reagan conservative. I served for 18 years in the PA House, and I never made an unconstitutional vote. During my service, I regularly introduced complete alternate budgets - without any taxes increases or deficit spending. I was never afraid to stand up to leadership in Harrisburg, and that won't change when I go to Washington.

Situations may change, principles never do. I'm going to DC to help renew trust in government by restoring truth and to dismantle the oppressive Obama agenda. I will be proud to stand with Senators like Jim DeMint, Rand Paul, and Tom Coburn.

But I need your help to get there. If the PA GOP has their way, Pennsylvanians will nominate a candidate who voted for Obama! For the sake of PA and the nation, that must not happen!

We're going to send a message to the moderate GOP establishment that "The People" want to be heard and want a proven conservative in the Senate. Will you join me?

Thanks for your support.

For America,

Sam Rohrer

Conservative Republican, Pennsylvania

This article outlines extensively how control of the Republican party is maintained by setting the rules of the game.

This control of the result through the making of the rules goes a long way to explaining how a Sam Rohrer can win an overwhelming majority in grass roots straw polls but be shut out at state committee. Those who make the rules of the party have an overwhelming advantage in determining outcomes. Not only do we need to run for public office but party office as well.

True the Vote

Dear Fellow Patriot,
Overwhelm the system.

It's a classic Cloward and Piven technique the far left has relied on for decades to push its agenda, and it's in full swing right now in Wisconsin. Yesterday, the Government Accountability Board (GAB) announced that it will not and cannot verify the more than one million signatures union coalitions submitted in the recall effort against Governor Scott Walker.

A GAB official stated "It's not feasible in balancing the public interest to verify every single signature. In fact, our statute requires a review not a verification." The GAB also refused support from outside groups like Verify the Recall, the nonpartisan effort to engage citizens in an independent, comprehensive audit of recall petition signatures that True the Vote helped launch.

It's no accident that the anti-Walker bloc submitted twice the amount of signatures needed to trigger a recall election. Such massive overcompensation is intentionally orchestrated to send a clear message of mob rule. If 1,000,000 signatures is what it takes to break the back of election processes and win by default - and it's looking that way right now - then America is in grave trouble.

Will you stand with True the Vote today to force the GAB to verify every single signature by making an immediate donation of $25, $50, $100, $250 or more? Your support will help us fight to make sure Verify the Recall's findings are considered by the Wisconsin government.

Political pundits on both sides of the aisle agree that a recall election against Governor Walker would be the most important non-presidential election of our generation. But the GAB isn't doing anything to ensure the integrity of the recall process! Simply spot checking abnormalities is not nearly enough for an election that will have ramifications in all 50 states and play a key role in deciding who wins the White House in November!

Verify the Recall volunteers have been entering all of the signature data information into a comprehensive digital dataset posted online, submitting each line to a thorough accuracy check to inspect for duplicates, omissions, ineligibilities, forgeries and fraud. This information MUST be considered! But True the Vote urgently needs your support to sustain it. That's why I'm asking you to make the most generous contribution you can afford right now.

Will you follow this link right now to make a contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250 or more to True the Vote?

We must do everything in our power to restore the integrity of our elections. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Catherine Engelbrecht
President and Founder, True the Vote

P.S. Thanks to our superior signature verification process, Verify the Recall volunteers have already discovered thousands of ineligible signatures in the current senate recall petitions. But now the GAB refuses to review information from outside groups. In fact, the GAB has announced that it will NOT review every single signature! We cannot allow this to happen. Will you make sure True the Vote has the resources to continue our Verify the Recall effort until every signature is accounted for? Please follow this link right away to make a contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250 or more. Thanks!

RedState

RedState Morning Briefing

For February 9, 2012

1. House Conservatives Support Barack Obama's Latest Stimulus

Since February of 2009 when President Barack Obama began his aggressive push for stimulus into the American economy, he focused on one core area - infrastructure.

In fact, in his stimulus speech before Congress in 2009, his States of the Union in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and his Jobs Act speech of late 2011, the President repeated referred to spending government money to create jobs to fix America's infrastructure.

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH), leader of the Republican Study Committee, is confirmed to be leaning toward supporting the plan. His public pronouncements that he is leaning toward supporting the plan is leading House conservatives as a whole to support this new stimulus plan - a stimulus plan to create jobs fixing and expanding America's infrastructure.

The plan will most likely necessitate a federal bailout of the Highway Trust Fund, which is typically funded through the gas tax and is used to pay for highway projects. But Obama's new stimulus busts the cap on the trust fund and, like social security, gets into general fund money to pay for the spending binge.

With the House bill, as is typical of Barack Obama's legislation, spending will outpace income over the next five years by $69.6 billion. Moreso, as is also typical of President Obama's stimulus schemes, Washington would retain the bulk of control, even though the money would be going to state transportation projects. Federal strings and federal money will come with the legislation.

Oh, and if the House goes along with the Senate's version of this stimulus plan, Americans could see new taxes on their IRA's.

2. President Barack Obama: "The Dependency President"

Government dependency is on the rise according to a new Heritage Foundation study. Americans can thank President Barack Obama for a huge spike in the numbers of Americans dependent on government resources, but both parties can share in the blame. If the federal government does not make government smaller and less intrusive, then there may not be much private sector wealth creation for government bureaucrats to take to redistribute to dependent Americans.

American are relying on government handouts rather than hard work for many of the necessities of life. One in five Americans rely on the federal government for housing, health care, food, college tuition and retirement resources. The 10th year of The Heritage Foundation government dependency study, the 2012 Index of Dependence on Government, proves that members of both parties need to take a hard look in the mirror and figure out a way to slow, then end, the creeping expansion of the federal government into every aspect of our lives.

3. The State Department Staff at the Baghdad Embassy is Embarrassing Itself

A Tuesday New York Times article called "U.S. Planning to Slash Iraq Embassy Staff by as Much as Half" purported to describe the plight of U.S. State Department employees in Iraq, whose diplomatic efforts are being rebuffed by a host nation and government that has little use for them. According to the Times, the 16,000 employees (including 2,000 diplomats) at "the $750 million embassy building, the largest of its kind in the world, were billed as necessary to nurture a postwar Iraq on its shaky path to democracy and establish normal relations between two countries linked by blood and mutual suspicion. But the Americans have been frustrated by what they see as Iraqi obstructionism and are now largely confined to the embassy because of security concerns, unable to interact enough with ordinary Iraqis to justify the $6 billion annual price tag."

4. Is Syria Really "Different?"

While the recent increase of attention to the ongoing carnage in Syria is a welcome change from the Obama administration's collective state of denial over the past ten months, signals remain mixed, and our policy is unclear if not non-existent. This week alone, for example, we got the welcome news that the Pentagon is preparing military options on Syria for the President, but at the same time White House press secretary announced those options will not be exercised.

The waters have been further muddied by the President's insistence that there is no parity between the situation in Libya last year and what we face now in Syria. In Libya, the threat to civilians and opportunity to topple a vicious dictator were sufficient cause for Mr. Obama to engage the U.S. military, even without a pressing national security interest at stake. While it can be argued that once the U.S. engaged in Libya it might have been preferable to lead from the front to secure weapons stockpiles and guard against al Qaida encroachment, the fact remains that the world is a better place with Colonel Qaddafi gone, as Mr. Obama routinely reminds us.

5. Our Constitution is not Irrelevant, Justice Ginsburg

If you walk by the National Archives on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. you will most likely see a line of people waiting to get just a glimpse of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. These two aged documents are browned with time and sealed under layers of a secure glass enclosure in the domed lobby of the Archives. But they still manage to impress their visitors. The inked words of the Constitution, many of them carefully penned by Gouverneur Morris over 200 years ago, are now barely visible. While some foreign visitors may struggle to make them out, we Americans know them by heart. "We the people in order to form a more perfect union..." the Constitution starts, and what follows is one of the most awe inspiring and heartfelt treatises to freedom in the history of man. After all, this one document founded the most successful country the world has ever known.

6. What the Heck is Wrong with Mitt Romney?

Sometimes - well, frankly, pretty often - Mitt Romney scares the crap out of me.

I'm already on record saying that I think he'd be a much better President than Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum, and nothing that has happened in the last month has changed that. Both Gingrich and Santorum are completely devoid of either the temperament or experience to handle the job of chief executive of the massive Federal government, a point which Newt Gingrich in particular seems determined to reinforce every single day between now and Super Tuesday (at least). Additionally, both Gingrich and Santorum have been C- candidates (at best) in terms of building a national campaign organization and raising money, both of which are necessary to have any chance to get the job of President, if they want to prove that I'm wrong about their experience and temperament. I am as close to 100% certain as I can be that both would lose in a landslide to Obama.

The problem is that I'm coming close to reaching that same conclusion about Mitt Romney.

7. Michael Medved Wants A Different Conservative Base

What is it with Salem Radio's major hosts? Geez. You want to find out what the Romney campaign thinks, flip on Michael Medved or Hugh Hewitt or a number of the other Salem Radio hosts and you'll find a host fully in line with Mitt Romney and fully out of step with the bulk of the conservative movement.

In fact, it is striking to find Salem's radio hosts so in the tank for Romney when the top radio shows in the country from Rush Limbaugh to Sean Hannity to Glenn Beck to Mark Levin to Neal Boortz to Laura Ingraham have all either stayed on the sidelines or gone largely against Romney.

And if being out of step with the larger conservative movement on this issue weren't enough, Michael Medved has decided to trot out the newest pro-Romney talking point with some serious condescension. You see, it is not Mitt Romney. It is you hicks, rubes, and idiots that are to blame. "Dammit, why won't you like him??!!??" Medved comes close to asking.

Mitt Romney has not changed. You people have! This follows an earlier Michael Medved lament where he threw out every straw man he could at both Rush Limbaugh and me in the name of defending his Massachusetts Moderate.

Most interesting, in that earlier opinion piece Medved claimed the Republican Party had to abandon conservatism to win in 2012. This time around, Medved claims Romney actually is a conservative. It's just conservatives have become radically conservative. He seems to be shifting positions as often as Mitt Romney.

Fellow patriots,

Remember when President Obama began his administration with a declaration that he was going to "reset" our relations with Russia, which had been damaged by George Bush's failed policies? (see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29478806/ns/world_news-europe/t/obama-time-reset-relations-russia/ )

Well...what do we call this accusation from Russia, declaring the US to be a fascist state that Syria and the rest of the world must be defended against?  Either Obama supporters will have to admit (again...) that acrimony between Russia and the Bush Administration had much more to do with Russia's policies than Bush's, or they'll have to admit that Obama's policies have been at least as damaging to US - Russian relations as Bush's were.

Personally, I'm giving Obama the benefit of the doubt on this one, and will contend that Russia's belligerence vindicates the souring of relations while Bush was in office...just as North Korea's unprovoked and deadly attacks on South Korea, and Iran's threats to close off the Strait of Hormuz, have vindicated Bush's moniker for them as "the Axis of Evil."

Also, aren't you glad that we're not waging a war on terror anymore?...uhhh...so what do we call this war we're in????

I'm ready to call it either "The Global Islamist Jihad Against Everything Not Islamic Or Insufficiently Islamic Or Differently Islamic" or "The Islamist Jihad to Somaliaize the World."

One of the inconvenient truths of the disaster brewing in Syria that doesn't fit the mainstream narrative is that President Assad is actually right about the insurgents being Muslim Brotherhood/Salafi extremists (see http://www.mintpress.net/saudi-backed-insurgents-at-core-of-syrian-uprising/ ).

As in Libya, which is in the process of being turned into an Islamist state, THERE ARE NO GOOD GUYS IN SYRIA'S POLITICAL TURMOIL.  We've also been down this road before in Iraq, where the Shiites who longed for our aid in ousting Saddam Hussein taught us that gratitude is the shortest-lived emotion on Earth, as they hovered on the verge of war against us from the moment Saddam was deposed.

To see the latest events in the growing Syrian bloodbath, check out the MSNBC article at bottom, where 47 people were killed in Homs.  However, in reading it, recognize that the article is written by a Muslim, and we can hardly expect a Muslim to report on the war in Syria objectively.  He is sure to either list the atrocities of Assad while being silent about the atrocities of the rebels or vice versa.  In this case, he's with the rebels, just as reporters were with the rebels in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya.  While mulling that thought, think about where these countries are today -- drifting into the orbits of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafis, and/or al Qaeda.

World Former Russian Gen.: Russia Is 'Defending the Entire World From Fascism,' Is Ready to Use Military Power to Defend Iran, Syria

  • Posted on February 6, 2012Russian Col. Gen. Leonid Ivashov Says Russia Is Ready to Use Military Power to Defend Iran and Syria

Former member of Russian Joint Chiefs of Staff Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov appeared on Russia Today TV to boldly announce that Russia is "defending the entire world from Fascism" - waged, of course, by the U.S. and Israel - and that his country is ready to use military force to defend Iran and Syria from its aggressors. He added that an attack on Syria or Iran would be an indirect attack on Russia. The retired colonel also compared U.S. presence in Libya to Hitler and his armies' aggression against Poland and later, Russia.

The Following are excerpts from an interview with Ivashov on RT February 1, 2012. Translations provided by the ever-vigilant staff at MEMRI:

 ZOA

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,

As you know, an anti-Israel "Boycott-Divest-Sanction" ["BDS"] event was held on the University of Pennsylvania's campus this past weekend.

This is a report to you of our participation in the Jewish community's response.

ZOA-GPD responded in multiple ways to this unjust attack on Israel, which was intended to turn students, faculty and others against the Jewish State and gain credibility for this hateful movement. Our responses included meeting with students; enhancing the Shabbat meals for students as we provided Israeli foods from our friends at Osem USA; and intensifying our leading role in the ongoing "Buy Israel" campaign, directly confronting the "BDS" attack in the marketplace.

We participated actively in the framing of the community's "Statement of Solidarity Condemning the National BDS Conference at the University of Pennsylvania," in which the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the Board of Rabbis of Greater Philadelphia, Jewish educational and charitable organizations, and grassroots groups including Z Street and ZOA-GPD were signatories. As the Jewish Exponent reminds us, ours is a "diverse" community, and we believe that we influenced the drafting of the document toward the principles and positions in which we believe. That so many distinct elements of our community (though not all) joined in signing this statement condemning "BDS" campaigns is encouraging, as is the invigorated pro-Israel activism of many Penn students, as well as the community at large.

A centerpiece of our community's response was an address Thursday evening to a packed auditorium, plus Internet streaming viewed by thousands, by Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz. He strongly condemned the "BDS" campaign, but expanded his remarks to include U.S. domestic concerns and suggestions to Israel regarding the peace process. With due appreciation to the Professor for joining in our community's countering of the "BDS" campaign at Penn, ZOA-GPD disassociates itself and our members from the propriety and substance of these latter remarks.

Our struggle against the attacks by delegitimizers of the Jewish homeland of Israel, of which "BDS" campaigns are a significant part, of course continues unabated.

*      ZOA believes strongly in a secure, strong and successful Jewish state of Israel.
*       We believe that Jewish people have a right to live anywhere but particularly in our ancestral and legal homeland.
*       We believe that it is Arab intransigence and incitement that stands in the way of peace.
*       We believe that Israel has every right to do whatever is necessary to protect its citizens.
*       We believe that the safety of Israel and its continued existence should be a priority for each and every Diaspora Jew.
*       We believe that hate speech and intimidation have no place in an academic setting or anywhere else in civilized society.

Efforts to harm Israel are not limited to one weekend or one campus, and accordingly we call on you to remain active in supporting our many pro-Israel activities, and to encourage your family, friends and associates to join in our efforts. We value your involvement in ZOA-GPD.

Am Yisrael Chai,

Morning Bell: Middle East Crumbles Around Obama's Foreign Policy

First look toward Homs, Syria - ground zero in the 11-month-old uprising against the brutal government of Bashar al-Assad, which is unleashing death upon its people minute by minute and hour by hour. The United Nations estimates that Assad's regime has killed more than 5,000 anti-government protesters in the last 11 months, with 200 killed on Friday night alone. The Arab League has stationed observers in country, whose mission was to oversee compliance with a peace plan. That failed.

The Obama Administration rushed to the United Nations Security Council and attempted to pass a resolution calling for Assad to step aside. Predictably, China and Russia laid down a veto. On Monday, the United States finally closed the doors to its embassy in Damascus and withdrew the diplomatic staff over continuing security concerns. Meanwhile, intelligence experts are examining the risk of terrorists gaining control of Syria's weapons stockpiles should the Assad regime fall.

Dear Patriots,

The Philadelphia Chapter of CAIR is vigorously fighting an anti-Sharia Law bill, and CAIR has won over the Philadelphia City Council members. I urge all our elected leaders to be aware of what CAIR is up to. CAIR has a huge footprint in Chester County.

Here is the email:

Message from Amara S. Chaudhry, Esq.
CAIR-Philadelphia Civil Right Director

Dear CAIR-PA Supporter,
Right now, the Pennsylvania legislature is considering a bill which is part of a national effort to vilify, stigmatize, and demonize Islam and Muslims.

Fortunately, CAIR-Philadelphia is working to make sure that this bill never becomes law.

On its face, House Bill 2029, introduced by Rep. RoseMarie Swanger (R-Lebanon) and titled "American and Pennsylvania Laws for Pennsylvania Courts," is a bill which prohibits Pennsylvania courts from considering applying any "foreign law" which would limit an individual's constitutional rights.

Unfortunately, the plain language of this bill hides a much more sinister purpose - to demonize Islam and Muslims. HB 2029 is part of a larger "American Laws for American Courts" (ALAC) movement created by the American Public Policy Alliance (APPA) to guard against "the infiltration and incursion of foreign laws and foreign legal doctrines, especially Islamic Shariah Law."

ALAC bills have been introduced in over 23 states thus far.

Make no mistake: the ALAC movement purports to target "Shariah law" but, in actuality, the ALAC movement seeks to demonize Islam itself and all Muslims. The purported author of the model ALAC legislation has been reported to have previously called for a "war against Islam," has attempted to criminalize adherence to the Muslim faith, and to have advocated for a ban on all Muslim immigration.

CAIR-Philadelphia is working hard to ensure that HB 2029 never becomes law in Pennsylvania.

*CAIR-Philadelphia has prepared a Memorandum in Opposition to House Bill 2029, and we are mailing a hard copy of this memorandum to every member of the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee which is currently considering HB 2029.
*As a result of our media work, the bill has garnered significant negative media attention.
*We also worked with the Arab-American Community Development Corporation to prepare a resolution to be presented to Philadelphia City Council. The resolution, which condemns the bill, passed unanimously today.
*Mark your calendars for February 27th. CAIR-Philadelphia will be hosting a panel discussion and Q & A session at the Free Library of Philadelphia on Sharia. The event will be free, open to the public and broadcasted.

Finally, I need you, CAIR-PA Supporter, to become educated about HB 2029 and its threat to our religious freedom. I also need you to support CAIR-Philadelphia and our work by attending our 6th annual banquet. Please register soon, and I hope to see you there.

Together, we can win this fight.
Sincerely,
Amara S. Chaudhry
CAIR Philadelphia Civil Rights Director

The title of the CAIR email is: "One Victory in a Larger Battle: Philadelphia City Council Condemns Anti-Sharia Bill". As you can see CAIR considers what they do as a "large battle" meaning they are in for the long haul. The only way to stop them is to elect officials who will appoint judges who are fully aware that CAIR is a subversive group working to undermine the American way of life. They are working towards a larger goal of caliphate, where Islam and Sharia Law will dominate the world, including the US and the West. The fact remains - CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in the "Holy Land Foundation" trial held in Texas that convicted the "Holy Land Foundation" of funneling money to terror organizations around the world (Hamas, Hezballah). CAIR is the propaganda arm of the Jihadists.

Your fellow patriot and freedom fighter,

Rich

The 'Negro Project' and Voter ID

By J. Christian Adams On February 7, 2012

It seems photo voter ID and Planned Parenthood have been in the news quite a bit lately. On Tuesday I gave a presentation at Duke University School of Law on voter ID. I discussed both topics. How are they related?

One of the favorite canards of voter ID opponents is that voter ID is an intentional scheme to harm black voters. The theory supposes since black voters tend to have photo identification less frequently, then state laws requiring voter ID are a deliberate plot to harm black voters.

Consider the nonsense of Virginia Senator Mamie Locke. After the Virginia Senate passed voter ID this week, she called it "so 1866," thinking she was describing a year where blacks couldn't vote and whites could. In fact, 1866 saw precisely the opposite. White confederates were disenfranchised and freedmen enjoyed the franchise. The reconstruction constitutions decades later stripped blacks of voting rights. But in 1866, all was relatively well. Locke's racially charged history is both unfortunate, and wrong.

Romneycare Required Anti-Catholic Regulations Like Obamacare's

Tuesday, 07 Feb 2012

By Jim Meyers

Mitt Romney is vociferously attacking a provision in Obamacare requiring religious employers to cover birth control in employee health plans - but the healthcare bill he enacted as governor of Massachusetts also contained that requirement.

C.J. Doyle, executive director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, told the Boston Globe that Romney's criticism of President Obama is hypocritical because as governor he did not lift the state-level requirement of contraception coverage.

"The initial injury to Catholic religious freedom came not from the Obama administration, but from the Romney administration," Doyle said.

"President Obama's plan certainly constitutes an assault on the constitutional rights of Catholics, but I'm not sure Gov. Romney is in a position to assert that, given his own very mixed record on this."

"[T]he present Constitution is the standard to which we are to cling. Under its banners, bona fide must we combat our political foes." --Alexander Hamilton

Editorial Exegesis

The greatest contract of Liberty in history

"A study to be published in June in the New York University Law Review finds that our Constitution 'appears to be losing its appeal as a model for constitutional drafters elsewhere.' 'Among the world's democracies,' writes David Law of Washington University in St. Louis and Mila Versteeg of the University of Virginia, 'constitutional similarity to the United States has clearly gone into free fall. Over the 1960s and 1970s, democratic constitutions as a whole became more similar to the U.S. Constitution, only to reverse course in the 1980s and 1990s.' The New York Times' coverage of this study finds 'lots of possible reasons' for the decline. 'The U.S. Constitution,' it says, 'is terse and old' and 'guarantees relatively few rights.' ... The Constitution doesn't seem to be of much use to Barack Obama, either. The president ... recently lamented that the Founders 'designed a system that makes it more difficult to bring about change than I would like sometimes.' ... A lack of respect for the Constitution isn't peculiar to Obama. It's shared among Democrats, in particular, even Democrat-appointed Supreme Court jurists. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Clinton appointee, said last week on Egyptian television that if she were drafting a constitution in the year 2012, she wouldn't look to ours. She reportedly recommended the South African Constitution, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or the European Convention on Human Rights. ... We're not ashamed to declare the U.S. Constitution a magnificent document that, along with the Declaration of Independence, forms the greatest national charter in human history. No other document has ever guarded freedom the way it has, and no other contract has provided such a foundation for prosperity. It's not perfect, but it's as close to perfect as man has come." --Investor's Business Daily

How can the U.S. follow its own Constitution?

Upright

"Last night when discussing the trends in the three non-binding Republican contests, I tweeted that Rick Santorum's win in Missouri was only surprising in gaining a majority, but that a win in Minnesota would be surprising -- and a win in Colorado would be shocking. ... Santorum shocked the Republican race with a clean sweep of Tuesday's caucuses and primary, and may have pushed himself into serious consideration as the long-sought conservative consolidation alternative to Mitt Romney." --blogger Ed Morrissey

"Republicans are worried sick that the Democrats will be able to use all the nasty sound bites from the GOP debates in the general election. I'm not too concerned for a number of reasons, but the main one is that the GOP will merely have to produce ads in which we show Barack Obama saying, 'I'm pledging to cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term in office' and 'If I don't get the unemployment rate under 7%, I deserve to be a one-term president.' For good measure, I would produce another ad in which I showed Obama and jobs czar Jeffrey Immelt giggling as the president says, 'I guess shovel-ready jobs weren't quite as shovel-ready as we thought.' The viewer would be reminded that this came a long time after Obama, Pelosi and Reid, shoved through a trillion dollar stimulus that they promised would turn around the economy." --columnist Burt Prelutsky

"As in Chicago, Obama seems to live in a cocoon in which Republicans are largely absent, offscreen actors that no one pays any attention to. ... Two decisions in particular seem tilted toward rich liberals. One was the disapproval of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada, even after it survived two environmental impact statements. ... The other astonishing decision was the decree requiring Catholic hospitals and charities' health insurance policies to include coverage for abortion and birth control. Here Obama was spitting in the eyes of millions of Americans and threatening the existence of charitable programs that help millions of people of all faiths. ... Who's on the other side? The designer-clad ladies Obama encounters at every fundraiser. They want to impose their views on abortion on everyone else." --political analyst Michael Barone

"The majority of the American people, but in particular those who identify themselves as conservative, are overwhelmingly aware of the true nature of the nation's problems and the crossroad the country is facing in 2012. The grassroots rebellion that is the Tea Party movement was the first manifestation of this awareness. Despite the success of the Tea Party working within the Republican Party in the 2010 mid-term elections, most of the Republican elites downplayed their success and fell in with the mainstream media and the Democrats in their well-worn and gratuitous aspersions against those in fly-over country." --columnist Steve McCann

Essential Liberty

"In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson called the pursuit of happiness an unalienable right. This was a radical idea. For most of history, most people didn't think much about pursuing happiness. They were too busy just trying to survive. Then came the liberal revolution based on the idea of individual freedom. Only then did they start thinking that happiness might be possible on earth. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, the right to pursue happiness has been perverted into a government-backed entitlement to happiness." --columnist John Stossel

Qualifications: "I deserve a second term, but we're not done. When you and I sat down, we were losing 750,000 jobs a month ... now we're creating 250,000 jobs. We've made progress. The key now is to make sure we don't start turning in the wrong direction." --Barack Obama

Blaming the Constitution instead of following it: "What's frustrated people is that I've not been able to implement every aspect of what I said in 2008. Well, it turns out our Founders designed a system that makes it more difficult to bring about change than I would like sometimes. But what we have been able to do is move in the right direction. And you know what? One of the things about being president is you get better as time goes on." --Barack Obama

Prosperity, but... "I do think the vast majority of the American people understand ... we want everyone to be successful, and nobody begrudges people who have been successful because they're making things, creating new products and services, that's the American way -- but what people also want to see is that everybody is doing their fair share, that we're all pulling together, that we're creating ladders of opportunity for all Americans. Whoever the Republican nominee is, I fundamentally disagree with the formula that would go back to the same policies that got us into this mess in the first place." --Barack Obama

Dereliction of duty: "We do not need to bring a budget to the floor this year -- it's done, we don't need to do it." --Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)

Race bait: "[T]he government doesn't have the racism and discrimination that the private sector enjoys." --Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY)

Broken record: "You'd think that if a congresswoman got shot in the head, that would have changed Congress' views [on guns]. I can tell you how to change it, just get Congress to come with me to the hospital when I've gotta somebody that their son or daughter, their spouse, their parent is not gonna come home ever again. ... I don't know who has to get killed for people to start saying, 'Wait a second, this is enough.'" --New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, shamelessly using Gabrielle Giffords to argue for more gun control

Dezinformatsia

Speaking truth to power: "In 2010, we averaged about a million jobs. Okay? A million jobs that were created. In 2011, it was 1.8 million jobs. Now, in 2012, we are average 200,000 jobs a month that are being created. So [Obama] can run on his record. The jobs are coming up. And he's done so much in the past four years I can't even tell you." --CNBC's Suze Orman

The government programs keeping them poor: "What programs for the poor? [Republicans] keep acting as if poor people have all of these things that are helping them." --MSNBC's Al Sharpton

The BIG Lie: "[B]arack Obama has not put anyone on food stamps." --The Huffington Post's Barbra Streisand

Distortions: "Will voters hold Republicans accountable for trying to kill the American auto industry?" --MSNBC's Ed Schultz (Not bailing them out doesn't equal "trying to kill" them.)

Revisionist history: "[George Washington] began the political tradition that produced a Union victory in the Civil War, the Federal Reserve Board, Social Security, Medicare, and most recently, Obamacare. He had no patience in his own time with a states' rights interpretation of the Constitution and would have found the conservative agenda of the modern Republican Party and its Tea Party allies a repudiation of all he stood for." --professor and historian Joseph J. Ellis in Time magazine

No wonder there's a problem: "You should certainly be aided by all the constitution-writing that has gone one since the end of World War II. I would not look to the U.S. Constitution, if I were drafting a constitution in the year 2012. ... Wrong values: "We're here because our families worked hard to make sure that we had the opportunities that everyone should have. Barack and I are both motivated by a desire to pay those blessings forward. Your president lives by the principle that to whom much is given, much is expected. ... We are blessed to have someone not just of his intellectual caliber but with such a strong grounding of values that all of us identify with -- these basic American values that have made our country great and will continue to make us the strongest country in the world." --Michelle Obama

Making children of adults: "And when our kids get older and they graduate from school, we all know how hard it is for them to find jobs, let alone jobs with insurance. And that's why, as part of health reform, kids can now stay on their parents' insurance until they're 26 years old. So will we take that insurance away from our kids?" --Michelle Obama

Short Cuts

"If you needed more proof of liberal media bias, just look at the orgasms created by Friday's announcement that unemployment in January dropped to 8.3 percent. By contrast, these same folks were practically suicidal as the jobless rate dropped to 5.6 percent when George W. Bush was President in January 2004." --Newsbusters' Noel Sheppard

"Kodak had to ask that its name be taken off the Hollywood theater that hosts Oscar night due to Kodak's bankruptcy. There's a lesson here for the Democrats. After twelve years of being associated with the biggest names in Hollywood, Kodak has lost everything." --comedian Argus Hamilton

"Obama says he's getting better at being president and deserves a second term. Well, for the first claim, maybe he is getting better. He had the advantage of starting so poorly, it was hard for him to do any worse. As for the second part, it's more a question of whether we as a country deserve him. And since we haven't genocided anyone recently, I'm going to say 'No.'" --humorist Frank J. Fleming

COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 272 DAYS TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS

Santorum Shocks Romney/GOP Establishment

When the dust settled in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado last night, the conservative grass roots had once again shocked the professional political class by making Senator Rick Santorum the winner in all three races. I was gratified by the results, of course, since I was one of the first leaders to endorse his then "long-shot" candidacy. It is considerably less of a long-shot this morning! I have been inundated with press calls today asking essentially "What happened?" and "What does it mean?" Here is my take.

1. Santorum is doing better than expected because he is right on all three major themes of conservatism -- economic, foreign policy and values. He wants smaller government and lower taxes. He believes America must have a strong national defense and be engaged in the world. He also knows our nation's decline is not just economic in nature, but also moral. Thus, he is not ashamed to make the case for the sanctity of life, normal marriage and freedom of religion.

2. Governor Mitt Romney has a huge problem with the GOP base. A significant portion of that base has been willing to go with anyone -- Bachmann, Perry, Cain or Newt -- to express their discontent about the candidate that the vast majority of GOP insiders desperately wants to see nominated. Each of those alternatives had flaws that undermined their staying power. It is now Rick Santorum's time, and I believe he has a good chance to be more resilient and go all the way.

3. The "electability" card has been dealt a serious blow. GOP insiders always equate electability with candidates who are seen as moderates and for whom values issues are not a high priority. But if that were true, we would be discussing the Dole and McCain presidencies -- neither of which happened, and Ronald Reagan would have lost. But it was Reagan, the strong conservative, who prevailed, while the squishy moderates were squashed by the Democrats and their media allies.

In his victory speech last night, Santorum told the crowd, "I don't stand before you as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney. I stand before you as the conservative alternative to Barack Obama." Well said.

Mitt and Newt have both sunk in recent days because they are savaging each other instead of helping GOP voters see how they can defeat the worst, most extreme left-wing president in American history.

I will close with the same point I have made for months. I have endorsed Senator Santorum and I am glad I did. He can win. But no matter who gets the nomination, we must close ranks and end the Obama nightmare or much of what we cherish will be gone!

Radicals To Occupy CPAC

Once again the radical left is showing its disdain for free speech by trying to intimidate and silence its political opponents. The Occupy Wall Street movement and its Big Labor allies are plotting to disrupt this week's CPAC conference, promising to make it "a conference the attendees will never forget."

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is one of the largest annual gatherings of conservative activists and policy makers in the country. Rick Santorum,

Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich will be there. Sarah Palin is delivering the keynote address this year. Here's how the Occupy DC website describes this conference:

"...this event is another gathering of bigots, media mouthpieces, corrupt politicians, and their 1 percent elite puppet masters. CPAC will parade and attempt to perpetuate the radical right wing's imperialist ideologies with keynote speakers, movies and banquets dedicated to pursuing its racist, sexist, patriarchal and exploitative agenda.

"Spectacles will include imperialist topics such as 'From Fidel to Chavez: How Do We Stop the Resurgence of Socialism in Latin America?', 'Is the Arab Spring Good or Bad for America?' and frequent bloviation on 'American exceptionalism.' Openly racist discourses will be given on 'The Failure of Multiculturalism...'"

Bigots. Corrupt. Imperialist. Racist. Sexist. Exploitative. That is what the left thinks about you! And yet the media blames us for the breakdown in public discourse. And did you catch the disdain for the idea of American exceptionalism? The left doesn't believe that America is or was ever a "shining city upon a hill." It thinks we are the evil empire.

I hope the CPAC organizers, hotel staff and Washington, D.C., police are prepared for these thugs. Late last year, hundreds of occupiers stormed a conservative event at the Washington convention center. They disrupted traffic, assaulted elderly women and used their own children as human shields. These radicals are violent. They have no respect for the rule of law or their fellow citizens.

Iran Preparing A Second Holocaust

More than 70 years ago, the world made a tragic mistake and tens of millions died as a result. World leaders at the time largely ignored the growing scourge of anti-Semitism and naively assumed they could negotiate with a madman. Desperate for peace in their time, they traded a country for a meaningless "scrap of paper" and got a world war and the Holocaust instead of peace. Today, as Barack Obama attempts to negotiate with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Islamic Republic is promising a second Holocaust.

In a speech broadcast last week on state-run TV, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei referred to Israel as a "cancerous tumor that should be cut and will be cut." Khamenei also bragged about Iran's support for Hezbollah and promised to support "any nation or any group [that] confronts the Zionist regime... We have no fear expressing this."

At the same time Khamenei was delivering his anti-Semitic diatribe, an article was published by Alireza Forghani, the former governor of Iran's Kish Province, outlining the religious justifications as well as practicality of annihilating Israel. It could have been easily dismissed except for the fact that it was widely distributed by news agencies close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which is controlled by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. In other words, the content calling for genocide likely has the ayatollah's seal of approval.

And just as disturbing is the level of detail in the article. Consider this excerpt:

"Residents of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and H[a]ifa can be targeted even by Shah[a]b 3 [missiles]. Population density in these three adjacent areas composes about 60% of [the total] Israeli population. Sejjil missiles can target power plants, sewage treatment facilities, energy resources, [and] transportation and [communication] infrastructures; and in the second stage, Shahab 3, Ghadr, and Ashura missiles can target urban settlements until [the] final annihilation of Israel['s] people."

While the West dithers, Iran is preparing for war and brainwashing its people to accept genocide, just as Hitler did in the 1930s. And never forget that the ultimate goal of the radical Islamists is not the annihilation of Israel, but the destruction of the "Great Satan" -- America.

Media insisting Obama is in good reelection shape, but Gallup and Rasmussen say otherwise

Feb 08, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins

 By Kevin "Coach" Collins

Gallup Polling Company is caught between what its thousands of interviews say about Barack Obama's reelection chances and what it longs for the facts to be.

They do their best to hide the truth with suspiciously timed releases and obfuscating language. Nevertheless, embedded in its latest report on voter attitudes, Gallup's delivers  more bad news for Obama. Try as it did to put a happy face on the dangerously low level of "satisfaction" in the electorate,  Gallup can't do much with a 22% rate. Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Ronald Reagan all had more than 41% rates on their way to reelection, but George H.W. Bush was at 22% in 1992 when he lost to Clinton.

Voters' sentiment on the economy shows more weakness for Obama with 56% saying it is getting worse while just 38% see it getting better. This -25 in Gallup's Economic Confidence Index compares too favorably to ... Continue Reading:Media insisting Obama is in good reelection shape, but Gallup and Rasmussen say otherwise

American Minute Feb. 7

By Bill Federer, staff writer

Frederick Baily was born FEBRUARY 7, 1817. Though against the law for a slave, he learned to read. At age 20, he escaped to Massachusetts and changed his name to Frederick Douglass to hide from slave catchers. He began debating, developing oratory skills and exposing the injustices of slavery. William Lloyd Garrison hired him to sell subscriptions to the Liberator Newspaper. Frederick Douglass published his best-selling autobiography, but with his identity now known, to avoid slave-catchers he fled to England. He was enthusiastically received and met with reformer Daniel O'Connell. English friends raised money to buy his freedom and he returned to New York, founding the North Star newspaper. Writing for abolition and women's suffrage, his motto was "Right is of no sex-Truth is of no color-God is the Father of us all, and we are all Brethren." An advisor to President Lincoln, Frederick Douglass told the story of his conversion: "I loved ... Continue Reading:American Minute Feb. 7

Feb 07, 2012 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

by Doug Book,  staff writer

Yesterday, Coach is Right published facts concerning an avenue which honest and courageous congressional Republicans might follow in their efforts to bring to justice those responsible for the criminal misadventure of Operation Fast and Furious and its subsequent cover-up.  The following represents current news of a vastly different approach.

Congressman John Boehner, the House Speaker better known for displays of weeping than of courage, is reportedly cutting a deal with Eric Holder which would provide a "mutually satisfactory" outcome in Barack Obama's criminal, gun running endeavor Operation Fast and Furious.

Months ago, Boehner prevented Darrell Issa filing a charge of perjury against Holder even after documents proved the Attorney General's May 4th House testimony concerning the date of his first "acquaintance" with Fast and Furious to be an outright lie.  And now the weepy Speaker will OFFICIALLY let the most corrupt Department of Justice head in the nation's history off ... Halftime for Obama

"Halftime in America" is a punchier version of Wag the Dog's reelection slogan, "Don't Change Horses in Midstream". They might have tried, "The Best is Yet to Come", but Bloomberg already took that one.

It's one of those wonderful side benefits of socialism that the gap between corporate advertising and a campaign commercial blurs. What's good for GM is good for America and what's good for Chrysler is good for Obama. We may not have the pipeline, but we're still pipelining taxpayer money to a few precious union jobs with car companies that look a lot like the UK's car companies did in the seventies.

You can't really blame Chrysler for trying to preserve its Motor City brand, even if it's with a commercial that wasn't actually filmed in Detroit. It's much easier to put together some inspiring scenes of a Detroit recovery if you shoot it in Los Angeles, a place that has its problems, but which is much more likely to have cheerful couples waking up in apartments that seem to be entirely made of glass.

The Motor City brand is one of those things that doesn't mean a whole lot anymore, but still stirs up sentimentality, like the immigrant experience or freedom of speech. That Detroit is as real today as the Chicago depicted in Sandburg's poem which served as the hog butcher, tool maker and wheat stacker to the world. Today Sandburg might have called it a food stamp scanner, scammer and welfare taker instead.

American industry is a ghost of that former vigor, its hog butchering, tool making and wheat stacking done in by the progressive vision of a post-industrial society. Today it's Shanghai that might qualify for a Sandburg poem and it's also the only place to find that kind of aggressive industrial growth, but Halftime in Shanghai doesn't sound the same even if Shanghaiing American industry is the name of the game.

Chevy, another government bailout recipient, eschewed the phony clip show patriotism and cut right to showing that their truck could survive an apocalypse. Unlike Halftime in America, that ad could have been filmed in Detroit, which has major apocalypse potential. If you have to choose between trying to convince Americans that Motor City is back or convincing them that the end of the world is near but that the right truck can help them make it out alive, go with the second one.

But Chrysler needs the Motor City brand, because it doesn't exist anymore. After a brief two year period of being an American company again after its sale by Daimler-Benz, it is now owned by Fiat, which is as All-American as its CEO, Sergio Marchionne, who does not sound very much like Clint Eastwood. It needs that image of American industry, even if it's an Italian company still employing some American workers and an American brand.

Everyone needs their myths, even if it's the myth of a booming Motor City created in Los Angeles, starring a California movie star by a company headquartered in Turin, Italy. It beats the tawdry reality of Detroit. It's not as if anyone confuses myths with reality, or commercials with substance.

Plutocrat Dems attack Romney as 'Richie Rich'

Ann Coulter

Having given up on pillorying Mitt Romney for plundering his way to vast wealth - because, unfortunately, it isn't true - the NFM (Non-Fox Media) seem to have settled on denouncing him as a rich jerk.

Liberals are disgusted by people who made their own money, as Romney did at Bain Capital. But they admire ill-gotten gains, which is how John Kerry, John Edwards, Jon Corzine, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt and innumerable other spokesmen for the downtrodden amassed their fortunes.

Democrats are very proud of the rich, patrician FDR - who inherited all of his money and then launched a series of federal entitlements designed to bankrupt America 60 years later.

JFK also inherited his wealth, from a father who made his money as a bootlegger and stock manipulator. (In their defense, both men went on to create lots of jobs for bartenders and prostitutes.)

The Gipper's Principles for Governing Still Apply Today

This column by ACRU board member and founding member of the policy board of the Carleson Center for Public Policy Edwin Meese III was published February 6, 2012 in The Washington Times.

As the years pass, Ronald Reagan's stature continues to grow, and it has reached the point where all sorts of people quote him to support their policies or candidacies.

Last year, during the contrived "crisis" over a possible national default, California Sen. Barbara Boxer evoked the Gipper to justify raising taxes: "I find myself these days quoting Ronald Reagan. 'The full consequences of a default,' he said, 'or even the serious prospect of a default by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate.' "

Never mind that President Reagan, whose 101st birthday is Feb. 6, said in 1982: "We don't have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough; we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much."

With Many Claiming His Mantle, It's Important to Get Reagan Right

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published February 6, 2012 in The Washington Times.     Ronald Reagan, who would have turned 101 on Feb. 6, no doubt would have been amused by the number and ideological diversity of people claiming some part of the Reagan mantle.

Barack Obama has been doing it for years.

In an interview with Nevada's Reno Gazette-Journal on Jan. 17, 2008, President Obama said:

"I don't want to present myself as some sort of singular figure. I think part of what's different are the times. ... I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not. He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it. I think they felt like with all the excesses of the 1960s and 1970s and government had grown and grown but there wasn't much sense of accountability in terms of how it was operating."

ACLU Fights Sunshine in Wisconsin Recall

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published February 3, 2012 on The American Thinker website.

When should names on public rolls be kept secret?

Judging by the ACLU's double standard, secrecy is warranted if exposure might reveal voter fraud. On the other hand, if exposure puts marriage supporters at risk for harassment by radical activists...well, then, that's okay.

Unlike its apparent indifference to abuses of pro-marriage donors exposed in California in 2008, the ACLU pressured a Wisconsin agency not to create an online database to verify two million signatures for recalling Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, and four Republican state senators. The ACLU cites possible threats to victims of domestic violence. This might wash, except that the ACLU is also suing Wisconsin over its photo ID law that curbs voter fraud.

Keeping Marriage Real

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published February 2, 2012 in The Washington Times.

Maryland's Civil Marriage Protection Act is profoundly misnamed. In fact, it should more accurately be called the Attack on Religious Freedom Enabling Act.

That's because this is about more than the feelings of any two people. When you declare a couple "married," with the force of the law behind it, you bring everyone into it.

A brideless or groomless couple is not merely an addition to the marriage definition; it violates the very essence of marriage by excluding one or the other complementary sex.

Delta Force Hero Can't Speak at West Point Because of His Christian Beliefs

This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Ken Blackwell and ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published February 1, 2012 on The Huffington Post website.

A three-star Army general and war hero cannot speak at West Point because he's an outspoken Christian. So the Obama administration's hostility toward religion -- and especially Christians -- continues even to the detriment of our men and women in uniform.

Lieutenant General William G. ("Jerry") Boykin is like an action-movie hero. When the super-elite Delta Force was formed in late 1970s -- our top counter-insurgent military unit that the Pentagon still does not officially discuss -- this ranger in the 101st Airborne unit was tapped to be part of it.

In 1983 he was in Grenada, where Boykin survived being hit by a round from a .50-caliber gun. (Many anti-aircraft guns are ".50-cal," and a single round can split a human body in two.) In 1992 and 93, he was part of the Delta Force team hunting (and unofficially killing) drug lord Pablo Escobar. Then in 1993, Boykin was the commanding officer of the mission in the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia forever memorialized in the movie "Black Hawk Down."

FEBRUARY 8, 2012

Ninth Circuit Rules Against Marriage

Today, in a 2-1 decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled against Proposition 8, the California ballot measure that defined marriage in the California constitution as one man and one woman.

The appeals court decision upholds the decision of the lower court, which struck down Prop 8 as unconstitutional. According to the court of appeals, there was no "legitimate reason" for California voters to enact Prop 8.

In contrast to the trial court, the appeals court decision bases its decision on very narrow grounds that might not apply in other cases not involving the unique facts of Prop 8.

The court states:

Whether under the Constitution same-sex couples may ever be denied the right to marry...is an important and highly controversial question.... We need not and do not answer the broader question in this case, however...[, because the] unique and strictly limited effect of Proposition 8 allows us to address the amendment's constitutionality on narrow grounds.

However, the panel's "narrow" reasoning is little more than an activist house of cards. According to the panel, because the California constitution guaranteed a right to same-sex marriage-a right that existed for less than six months as a result of another activist judicial decision that modified both how the California constitution had always been read and the application of a state law enacted through initiative-the people of California could not amend their constitution to putatively disadvantage those who would seek to avail themselves of same-sex marriage without meeting the liberal court's heavy-handed standards for what constitutes "legitimate" reasons.

While denying that the decision creates a one-way ratchet in which any activist opinion creating rights or privileges becomes beyond correction by the people, that is precisely what this stunning decision does.

The ruling is lengthy and will bear additional analysis. But according to one legal scholar, "the case now has a seemingly clear path to the Supreme Court."

If the importance of the legal question wasn't sufficient to guarantee that, consider that the decision was authored by liberal activist Judge Stephen Reinhardt, who has done much to contribute to the Ninth Circuit's reputation for high reversal rates by the Supreme Court. Indeed, it has been frequently reported that Judge Reinhardt is so brazen about his lawless activism that he has bragged that the Supreme Court "can't catch 'em all"-"'em" being his legally wayward opinions.

As the Ninth Circuit writes, the question of how to define marriage "is currently a matter of great debate in our nation." Unfortunately, instead of permitting that debate to occur through the political process, decisions like the one issued today remove the question from voters in favor of judicially imposed social policy.

Heritage Employment Report: January Jobs

By Rea Hederman, Jr. and James Sherk

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in January, the economy added 243,000 jobs-108,000 more than the consensus forecast of 135,000. As a result, the unemployment rate fell from 8.5 percent to 8.3 percent, the lowest level since February 2009. For the last three months, job creation has averaged 201,000 a month, a sign that the labor market recovery may be truly underway.

Unfortunately, many fiscal policies enacted by Congress have generated little job growth. A two-month extension of the payroll tax cut does little to create employment, because the duration of the tax change is seen as temporary. Even worse, businesses have the added uncertainty of the expiration of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, which will constrain hiring.

Liberals and Their Dragons: Voegeli's Got My Back

Posted: 08 Feb 2012 08:49 AM PST

(Steven Hayward)

One of the many things left undone on my long To-Do list was a response to the sequel to the response (still with me?) to my controversial "Modernizing Conservatism" essay in the Breakthrough Journal a few weeks back from Mark Schmitt of the Roosevelt Institute. I thought our exchange in the Journal was reasonably productive and cordial, but in his sequel Mark wanted to extend the argument, in particular by rejecting my central point that modern liberalism has no limit in principle to its aspirations to extend political solutions for all social problems. Mark thought my one example-comparable worth-was my only example, confusing a respect for brevity in a response to several commentators with the whole of the argument. I could have gone on with examples large and small (perhaps the rat eradication program of the Great Society would also illustrate the point), but it is clear from Mark's response that he completely misses the point.
