REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK: Iran's supreme leader suspects Ahmadinejad in assassination plot.
   
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei suspects that members of his country's Revolutionary Guard close to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were behind an assassination attempt on Khamenei's life, according to Saudi and Egyptian security officials.

Among those being questioned is Khamenei's own son, Mojtaba, who heads the country's Basij militia, a paramilitary volunteer militia that operates under the auspices of the Revolutionary Guard, the sources tell me.

Bolton: Russia may have aided Iran in downing spy drone. Fears U.S. missiles, defenses, communications now at similar risk.

 
It's possible Russia directly aided Iran in downing the sophisticated U.S. drone that crashed in Iranian territory last week, former UN ambassador John Bolton charged today in a radio interview.

"You would have to think that that is a possibility," said Bolton, commenting on the likelihood of direct Russian assistance in the drone's capture.

Bolton was speaking on "Aaron Klein Investigative Radio" on New York's WABC Radio.

This will be an informal meeting. Just come in, sat around the tables and we'll watch and discuss the debate as it is going on. 
The event is free, but we will be asking for a donation to help cover the cost of renting the facilities for the evening. 

Please RSVP if you are attending so that we can get an idea of the number of people coming.
If this is not popular, we'll assume that everyone is too busy to come out late on a Thursday evening.

Finally: Planning ahead for 2012

We have a few events in the planning stages, but it is too early to give any details on them now. But there is one can can plant a seed for:

 
We are looking at having a fundraiser in January to refill the KTP coffers. This fundraiser will help us fund our activities as we gear up for the 2012 election cycle and cover the expenses of hosting events and out video project WKTP.TV.
We'll have a video presentation showing our 2011 events and activities and we'll have some special guests to help energize us for the New Year.

Barack Obama's relationship to Frank Marshall Davis, first came to light through a March 2007 speech[1] at New York University's Tamiment Library by Communist Party USA supporter and historian Gerald Horne.

Commenting on the alleged leftist sympathies of Hawaiians, Horne said;

    When these sources are explored, I think scholars of the future will be struck by, for example, the response in Honolulu when tens of thousands of workers went on strike when labor and CP leaders were convicted of Smith Act violations in 1953 - a response totally unlike the response on the mainland. Of course 98% of these workers were of Asian-Pacific ancestry, which suggests that scholars have also been derelict in analyzing why these workers were less anti-communist than their Euro-American counterparts.

1. Donald Trump Talks About the GOP, His Political Future, and Our Standing in the World

Earlier tonight on my radio program I interviewed Donald Trump. It was his first interview since announcing he would cancel the GOP debate in which he intended to moderate the candidates. Only two candidates had agreed to participate and Mr. Trump recognized that there was a real concern about him running as a third party.

So I asked him if he might and he said he just may run. He's really concerned about the GOP picking a weak candidate. He would not name any names, but he particularly did not like Jon Huntsman. He took issue with Huntsman's views on China, which Trump thinks are weak and dangerous.

We actually spent a good bit of time on China. Trump thinks we hold a strong hand against China, but political leaders on all sides are too scared to take on China. He criticized the existing debate structure for not going deep into discussions on China, OPEC, and American manufacturing.

2. Annual Deficit Will Absolutely Top $1 Trillion in 2012

Yesterday, the media was agog with glee over reports that CBO is projecting an annual deficit "below $1 trillion for the first time in four years."

How did they arrive at that conclusion?

This projection was extrapolated from the Treasury Department's report of the first two months of the fiscal year budget, which, as explained by the CBO's monthly budget review, pegs the current deficit at $236 billion - $55 billion less than at this time last year. The media is conflating this monthly report with an outdated long-term CBO budget outlook, which projects only a $973 billion deficit for FY 2012.

3. No, Ron Paul is not a threat to win the Iowa Caucuses

It doesn't matter what you think the new Public Policy Polling result says. It doesn't matter how many gleeful Democrats are writing up news stories claiming it's true. It's not.

Ron Paul, King of Earmarks, Full Metal Truther, and Archbishop of the anti-American Gnostic Constitutionalists, is not going to win the Iowa caucuses or even get close for one simple reason.

He wins people who don't vote, but the Iowa caucuses only admit Republicans.

She had written a major letter to the President of the California State U. complaining in great detail about antisemitism on campus. He had written back and said "Too bad". Egypt's sham election

Lowe's removes ads from All-American Muslim TV show

Pete Rivera, a follower of The Oakland Press' Facebook page, commented on one national retailer pulling their ads from a reality TV show set in Dearborn.

"It's a disgrace, but it shows the power of peoples' ignorance and intolerance," said Rivera.

"All-American Muslim," the TLC network reality show which focuses on Arab-American families and their day-to-day lives in Dearborn, has spurred one retail giant from pulling its advertising from the program.

Lowe's Home Improvement, the North Carolina- based retailer, has decided to end its advertising on the reality show. The retailer stated it had received requests from the Florida-based group known as the Florida Family Association to pull their advertising for the show because the group felt the show was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

The backlash from many against Lowes has inspired one California senator from taking action against the retailer. State Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, wants to take legislative action against Lowe's if they do not apologize to Muslims and reinstate their advertisements on the show.

The Daily Caller reported Sunday that "for the low, low price of $2,500, you can have dinner cooked for you by Weather Underground agitators and terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine [sic] Dohrn."

 

This is the low state of the world that we have become inured to. The absence of morality and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong and good and evil renders dinners with terrorists for... $2,500.

In the sixties, Bill Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn were members of the Weather Underground, a communist terrorist group that planted bombs at the Pentagon, the Capitol building, and other government buildings. Ayers himself planted a bomb at a statue commemorating police casualties during the 1886 Haymarket riots in Chicago. When a bomb he was hoping would kill American soldiers in New Jersey exploded prematurely in a house, Ayers became for ten years a fugitive from justice, but all charges against him were dropped in 1980 when an FBI program that was investigating the Weathermen was accused of improprieties.

Ayers, however, remains unrepentant, saying in 2001: "I don't regret setting bombs... I feel we didn't do enough."

Yet this dinner is hardly the first example of the legitimization of the terrorist Ayers. As I explained in my book The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration's War on America, when he left his terrorist activities behind, Ayers served his cause as part of the left's long march into America's institutions. He became a respectable professor at the University of Chicago. One of his neighbors was an ambitious young man named Barack Hussein Obama. In 1995, Obama launched his political career with a run for the Illinois State Senate, and he began his campaign with a fundraising event at the Chicago home of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

   As you can imagine,   The Muslim group at the university didn't like this too well.   They're demanding that Wichman be reprimanded, that the university impose mandatory diversity training for faculty,    And mandate a seminar on hate and discrimination for all freshmen.   Now, the local chapter of CAIR has jumped into the fray.   CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, apparently doesn't believe that the good professor   had the right to express his opinion.

Fellow patriots,

 

With the daily onslaught of American miscalculations and ever-more blatant Islamist advances, I have a hard time being surprised anymore, but the letter written by Senator Ted Lieu to the CEO of Lowe's, which he posted on his own Senatorial homepage (see below), was a head-spinner. 

 

As you may remember from a previous broadcast, TLC (The Learning Channel) recently started a new TV show called American Muslim, which is blatant propaganda for Islam whose premier episode was about a Catholic man converting to Islam to marry his Muslim bride-to-be.  In response, the Florida Family Association began a letter-writing campaign to the show's advertisers asking them to stop advertizing, which I joined in and also forwarded to you.  This letter-writing campaign has been very successful, causing many of the show's advertisers to stop, among them Lowe's (see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45637604/ns/local_news-charlotte_nc/t/backlash-lowes-ads-pulled-muslim-show/#.TuYpXvBqrpc.email ).  So if you participated in this campaign, congratulations!  Your efforts made a BIG difference.

 

But now comes the shocking bad news: Senator Lieu of California had the audacity to write a letter to the CEO of Lowe's, calling on Lowes to start advertizing on the show again and also apologize to America's Muslims.  Lieu went further by threatening both a boycott and legislative action against Lowe's if the company did not comply. 

 

Let this sink in: The Senator is demanding that a private company MUST advertize on a particular TV show.  THIS IS CRAZY!  How a private company chooses to advertize is its own business, and any governmental interference sets a dangerous imposition on our free speech rights.

 

What's worse, Senator Lieu's argument depends on a false analogy, when he tries to establish a moral equivalency between Islamic terrorists people like Timothy McVeigh and Seung-Hui Cho (the Virginia Tech mass murderer).  The difference, which Senator Lieu is too intelligent to not realize, is that Islamic terrorists are ideologically driven by their religion and are pursuing a widespread agenda aimed at ultimately establishing a global Islamic state, while McVeigh and Cho were isolated loners who hated society.

 

I tried to email a letter to Lieu via his Senatorial website (  http://sd28.senate.ca.gov/contact/email ) but unfortunately his website rejected my email because I'm not from California.  If you're from California or you know someone who is, I would appreciate it if you could convey a letter like this one to Senator Lieu:

Your letter to the CEO of Lowe's, demanding that Lowe's advertizes on a particular television show and apologizes American Muslims, combined with threats of a boycott and legislative action, is an act of intimidation of a private company that violates everything that the First Amendment stands for.  To think that our government could FORCE a private company to advertize on a particular TV show is outrageous.  Even worse, you base your threats on a false equivalency between Muslim terrorists who are acting on their widespread interpretation of their faith and a few isolated loners who were acting on their feelings of alienation.  You're too intelligent for this to have been an honest mistake.  You should be ashamed.

The anxiety of influence, Times style

Reader Sean O'Brien wrote New York Times reporter Scott Shane to ask if he was alluding to the Gulag Archipelago in the lead sentence to his big page-one story on convicted Islamic terrorists incarcerated in federal prisons, about which I wrote here. Shane's lead is: "It is the other Guantánamo, an archipelago of federal prisons that stretches across the country, hidden away on back roads." Sean commented to Shane: "Never would have thought of federal prisons as such."

Shane responded: "No, though after writing it that occurred to me. I'm a big fan of Solzhenitsyn."

I'm not sure if that means it occurred to him after writing the story and before publication, or after. In any event, he expresses no embarrassment, and the echo is of a piece with the story's slant.

 

Obama Keeps A Campaign Promise

President Obama promised that if he became president, electricity costs would skyrocket. Of course, he intended to bring about that result by enacting cap and trade:

Today's USA Today headlines: "Household electricity bills skyrocket."

The increase reflects higher fuel prices and the expense of replacing old power plants, including heavily polluting - but cheap to operate - coal plants that don't meet federal clean air requirements.

And, to his credit, Obama was able to fulfill his campaign promise without cap and trade!

 

Hard Times for the One Percent

The New York Times points out that "the recession cost the rich," in that not only their incomes but their share of total income have dropped dramatically:

The share of income received by the top 1 percent - that potent symbol of inequality - dropped to 17 percent in 2009 from 23 percent in 2007, according to federal tax data.

No surprise there-that always happens, as Scott and I noted back in 1995 in "The Truth About Income Inequality." We wrote:

[I]ncome inequality tends to widen in times of prosperity, and narrow in times of recession. Thus, short-term drops in the income share of the top 5 percent occurred in the recession years of 1949, 1957-58, 1973-74, 1980-81, and 1990.

Upon reflection, this should not be surprising. In times of prosperity, more people are earning more money, and it takes a higher income to qualify for the top 1 percent, 5 percent, or any other statistical yardstick. Nearer the bottom of the income spectrum, incomes tend to be more fixed. So it should be expected that in boom periods, income inequality may increase somewhat, while in times of recession, income inequality will tend to narrow. And, in fact, the table above shows that this is exactly what has happened throughout the post-war era. "Increasing income inequality" is a statistical construct that, in practice, is likely to be synonymous with prosperity.

If you think the biggest problem we face is income inequality, a lousy economy represents at least a partial solution. Maybe between now and next November, Barack Obama will change his tune and claim he did it on purpose.

 

The American archipelago

Sunday's New York Times featured Scott Shane's long, long Sunday page-one story on the Islamic terrorists convicted of federal crimes and held in federal prisons. The point and purpose of the story are unclear to me, though some kind of advocacy on behalf of these terrorists is clearly in play. Somehow, I think it was written solely for Times reporter Scott Shane to render this unsubtle if evocative lead sentence suggesting the existence of some massive injustice: "It is the other Guantánamo, an archipelago of federal prisons that stretches across the country, hidden away on back roads. Today, it houses far more men convicted in terrorism cases than the shrunken population of the prison in Cuba that has generated so much debate." You really have to wonder, as we have occasionally over the years, if the Times's ambivalence regarding our efforts to defend ourselves hasn't reaches absurd depths.

Charlie Savage's gauzy story on detainee Ali Musa Daqduq raises a similar question. Daqduq is a Hezbollah operative held by American forces in Iraq who may be released as American forces make their final exit from Iraq. According to Savage, Daqduq is "accused of helping to orchestrate a January 2007 raid by Shiite militants that resulted in the death of five American soldiers." Savage observes that "[t]he administration is wrestling with either turning him over to the Iraqi government - as the United States did with its other wartime prisoners - or seeking a way to take him with the military as it withdraws, according to interviews with officials familiar with the deliberations." Savage frames the story as one of American presidential politics.

If you want to understand what Daqduq did and what his release will entail, you have to turn elsewhere. Here is how David Rivkin and Charles Stimson reported on his case in the Wall Street Journal last week:

Call it the triumph of ideology over national interest and honor. Having dithered for nearly three years, the Obama administration has only a few weeks to bring to justice a Hezbollah terrorist who slaughtered five U.S. soldiers in Iraq in 2007. Unfortunately, it appears more likely that Ali Musa Daqduq will instead be transferred to Iran, to a hero's welcome.

In the early evening of Jan. 20, 2007, in the city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, five black SUVs approached the location of a regular meeting between U.S. and Iraqi military officers. Inside the vehicles, which mimicked U.S. transports (to avoid heightened scrutiny), were a dozen individuals dressed in U.S. military uniforms and bearing U.S. weapons. Their drivers spoke English.

Upon reaching their target, the occupants opened fire on the Americans. One U.S. soldier was killed on the spot. Four others were kidnapped, tortured and executed.

The mastermind of this brutal attack? Ali Musa Daqduq, a Lebanese national and Hezbollah commander. U.S. forces captured him in March 2007, and, in interrogation, he allegedly provided a wealth of information on Iran's role in fomenting, training and arming Iraqi insurgents of all stripes.

With U.S. troops set to exit Iraq at the end of December, all detainees in American custody there have been transferred to the Iraqis except for Daqduq. He is set to be turned over in a matter of weeks. Based on past experience with released detainees who were in Iranian employ, U.S. officials know that Daqduq will promptly re-emerge in Iran, shaking hands with dignitaries and leading parades, before rejoining his Hezbollah colleagues.

Rivkin and Stimson's WSJ column is of course worth reading in its entirety. Savage's and Shane's Times stories both kill brain cells and subtract from the sum total of human knowledge.

Eurocrash Update #3: Radek's Warning

You didn't need this morning's Wall Street Journal headline ("Markets Doubt Europe Deal") to know that the weekend Eurodeal is not impressing the markets.  Beyond the market reaction, this morning's papers here in the U.S. are mostly fixed on the drama in London, where Prime Minister Cameron gave a spirited defense of his veto of changes to the EU Treaty, while the misgivings of his coalition partner Nick Clegg portend a possible collapse of the government.  (Doubtful in my judgment: Clegg and the Lib-Dems won't want to give up their rare and probably only share of power in their lifetime to this dispute.  But that could change quickly.)

Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski

While the London story unfolds, the American media have largely overlooked the remarkable intervention of Poland's foreign minister Radek Sikorski, who made front page news in Europe a couple days ago with a speech in Berlin calling for closer European integration and for Germany to step up and lead the whole thing with a firm hand.  He also had some hard words for Britain (as does his wife, Washington Post columnist Anne Applebaum, in today's paper; looks like a spousal pincer movement to me).

What is so startling about Radek's speech is not simply its directness and depth-both rare for modern European political figures-or the suggestion that this crisis is so serious it could lead to decades of political regression in Europe.  It represents a change of mind on his part.  I've known Radek for almost 20 years, going back to his days as a foreign correspondent, and then when he worked down the hall from me at AEI before resuming his political career in Poland.  He's twice fixed up conference invitations and lecture tours for me at Polish universities.  (He has said, by the way, that one of his goals is to have a street, square, or monument named for Ronald Reagan in every city in Poland.)  More than once he said to me, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, that the chief aim of his diplomacy was to keep Poland from being "Brussified," that is, keep it from coming under the maw of the soulless and unaccountable administrative tyranny of the Eurocrats.  Yet now he's calling for the European Commission and Parliament to be stronger.  Above all, one single passage is raising hackles in Poland and other eastern capitals: "I will probably be first Polish foreign minister in history to say so, but here it is: I fear German power less than I am beginning to fear German inactivity."

The Economist has a good summary and analysis of the speech, and a report on the aftermath, in which Radek is facing a no confidence vote in Poland's parliament for his speech.  You should read the whole thing, but here are a few key excerpts:

The inevitable conclusion is that this crisis is not only about debt, but primarily about confidence and, more precisely, credibility. About investor perception where their funds are safe.

Let us be honest with ourselves and admit that markets have every right to doubt the credibility of the Euro zone. After all, the Stability and Growth Pact has been broken 60 times! And not just by smaller countries in difficulty, but by its founders in the very core of the Euro zone.

If credibility is the problem, then restoring credibility is the answer.

Institutions, procedures, sanctions that will convince investors that countries will be capable of living within their means. Hence, that the bonds they buy will be repaid, preferably with honest interest. . .

The Euro zone crisis is a more dramatic manifestation of the European malaise because its founders created a system in which each of its members has the capacity to bring it down, with appalling costs to themselves and the entire neighborhood.

The break up would be a crisis of apocalyptic proportions beyond our financial system. Once the logic of 'each man for himself' takes hold, can we really trust everyone to act communitarian and resist the temptation to settle scores in other areas, such as trade? Would you really bet the house on the proposition that if the Euro zone breaks up, the single market, the cornerstone of the European Union, will definitely survive?

If we are not willing to risk a partial dismantling of the EU, then the choice becomes as stark as can be in the lives of federations: deeper integration, or collapse. . .

The European Commission needs to be stronger. If it is to play the role of an economic supervisor we need commissioners to be genuine leaders, with authority, personality - dare I say charisma - to be true representatives of common European interests. . .

Which brings me to the issue of whether an important member, Britain, can support reform. You have given the Union its common language. The Single Market was largely your brilliant idea. A British commissioner runs our diplomacy. You could lead Europe on defence. You are an indispensable link across the Atlantic. On the other hand, Euro zone's collapse would hugely harm your economy. Also, your total sovereign, corporate and household debt exceeds 400% of GDP. Are you sure markets will always favour you? We would prefer you in, but if you can't join, please allow us to forge ahead. And please start explaining to your people that European decisions are not Brussels' diktats but results of agreements in which you freely participate. . .

And I demand of Germany that, for your own sake and for ours, you help it survive and prosper. You know full well that nobody else can do it. I will probably be first Polish foreign minister in history to say so, but here it is: I fear German power less than I am beginning to fear German inactivity.

You have become Europe's indispensable nation.

Big Journalism 

 

It's been a very busy week for Operation Fast and Furious. Last Friday, the Department of Justice dumped 1400 pages of documents on Congress. On Saturday we learned US undercover drug agents laundered money for Mexican drug cartels. Wednesday we learned they were using Fast and Furious to make a case for gun regulations. Thursday was a big day because Attorney General Eric Holder testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee.

 

Sharyl Attkisson, Matthew Boyle, Katie Pavlich, and Cam Edwards did a great job covering all of these stories. Other Old Media outlets covered them but buried them deep in their websites and newspapers. Two news organizations didn't report on any of these. One of them is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Cam Edwards appears to be right. NBC will do anything to avoid mentioning Operation Fast and Furious. Then again, they haven't mentioned Fast and Furious ONCE all year, but this past week would have been the best time.

Fear of a Lonely Planet

The left of center European press has responded to Prime Minister Cameron's veto of EU 2.0 with all the hysteria of a man on a desert island who sees the rescue plane flying off into the distance. Equal to them is the American press which is already barking that if we don't sign on to Durban's boondoggle and accept a global environmental court, then we have doomed the planet.

 
This pathological drive toward regional and global union regardless of the negatives seems more like a neurotic reaction than serious policy. Is the UK really doomed outside of the EU, especially since for all the hyperbole it isn't anywhere near to being outside the EU, and is a failure to create another disastrous bureaucracy in the name of saving the planet from disaster really going to doom the human race?

Union has become the neurotic obsession of progressive politics, regardless of whether that union does anyone any good or not. If we could pretend that EU 1.0 was leaving behind the ghosts of nationalism for union, EU 2.0 is mostly compensating for the failures of EU 1.0 with greater centralization and wishful thinking. There isn't even the ghost of optimism or idealism on display here, it's the board of Olympus deciding to cook even more books in the hopes that shareholders don't notice that the whole thing is unworkable.

The problem with federalizing and unifying everything is that it's expensive. Multiple authorities mean more costs. Bulking up the bureaucracy isn't a triumph of the human spirit, it's the last days of half a dozen empires.

The unified humanity under a global government project is a bad idea spawned by people who couldn't properly run nations, let alone the world. And even more foolishly, its proponents like H.G. Wells assumed that such a project would be run by likeminded European socialists who would whip the religion and the nationalism out of all the peons. Their vision was really the British Empire, administering a global bureaucracy of reason, in which people might speak different languages, but they would all think the same way.

In its shameless arrogance this vision didn't account for a Gandhi or a Mohammed, it assumed that the day when Europe and the Anglo Colonies agreed to fall in line with a rational brotherhood of man, then all the little brothers in Asia, Africa and the Middle East would join the consensus and learn to love the smiling mustachioed face of Big Brother.

But China, India and the Muslim world have their own agendas, which are the old-fashioned kind, national greatness through industrial prosperity and armed force. And Western leftists have been left standing there like the successful elder brother who drops out of his law practice to join a cult and then returns home shocked to realize that the rest of the clan is still working for a living.

What Scares You?

Who scares you? Is it a big corporation like Exxon or AT&T that sends a shiver up your back? Do you get goosebumps when you see a Wall Street executive or lose control of your bladder if a CEO of a Fortune 500 company crosses your path? Clearly the "Occupy" crowd thinks big business is scary. And Obama blames them for virtually everything. And twenty-six percent of the public apparently agrees, telling Gallup in a new poll that "big business" is a threat to the country.

But in the same poll a near-record 64% of American said it wasn't business that scared them - it was big government! Americans are more worried about over regulating bureaucrats who tell us what we should eat, drive and drink, and big government agencies that are burying our country in thousands of pages of new rules and restrictions on our families and economy.

Eighty-two percent of Republicans said it was big government, not big business that gives them nightmares. Sixty-four percent of independents agreed. And even 48% of self-described Democrats, whose party is most closely associated with big government, also feared the army of bureaucrats more than the battalions of entrepreneurs.

Ronald Reagan often told us at the White House to trust the American people to see through the fog and ultimately reach the right conclusions. This poll confirms his observation.


Unicorn Millionaires?

Every day in Washington some elected official will say something that is so absurd you wonder how they ever got into a position of power. Yesterday it was again Senator Harry Reid's turn to shock and amaze.

As you know, Reid is a leading advocate of raising taxes on millionaires and billionaires, even though most of his proposals also raise taxes on couples making more than $250,000. Conservatives respond that when government raises taxes on people at that level it hits the small businesses and entrepreneurs who create jobs. Logically we all know this is true. How many of us have ever been given a job by a poor man? Your employer now and in the future will likely be one of the successful individuals that liberals continually berate.

But on Monday Senator Harry Reid broke new ground. He said millionaire job creators are a myth. On the floor of the U.S. Senate Reid stated, "Millionaire job creators are like unicorns. They are impossible to find and don't exist."

Just think, folks - this guy is a key player in making economic policy in Washington, DC. In fairness I do understand his confusion. Reid is a millionaire, and I suspect he has never created a job!


Expect a Nasty, Brutish and Long Campaign

Nasty, brutish and short. That's how philosopher Thomas Hobbes described life in the state of nature. As for what Republicans can expect in the year ahead from the Obama reelection campaign, nasty, brutish and long is the apt description. But there are hints that some Republicans want to go easy on Obama. In my Human Events column this week, I warn that Obama will be reelected unless Republicans are willing to fight back forcefully against a ruthless and desperate Obama reelection campaign. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' concerns about the threat of big government continue to dwarf those about big business and big labor, and by an even larger margin now than in March 2009. The 64% of Americans who say big government will be the biggest threat to the country is just one percentage point shy of the record high, while the 26% who say big business is down from the 32% recorded during the recession. Relatively few name big labor as the greatest threat.

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow led his team to another victory last weekend, a come-from behind overtime thriller over the Chicago Bears.

But it's as much his unapologetic Christianity off the field as his performance on the field that's making news.

"Born in the Philippines to missionary parents," The Heritage Foundation's Jennifer Marshall reports in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, "he not only is outspoken about his faith, referencing it frequently in word and symbol - such as biblical citations in his eye black. He's also as intense about living out his faith as he is about playing football - and winning."

Marshall, who directs Heritage's Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society, explains that Tebow's public expressions of belief are consistent with America's first principles:

So You Think You Know Your Rights?

It seems that there is a right to everything these days: a right to the internet, to free health care, to a good job, and to a free college education. The Supreme Court is famous for finding new rights in the "penumbras" and "emanations" of the Constitution.

This Thursday, December 15, marks the 220th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights. What better opportunity to look at what rights the Constitution actually guarantees?

A right is not merely something you want or claim. You may, for example, want a better job, but that does not mean that you have a right to that job. The Framers understood a right to mean something that justly belongs to you, that others have a duty not to interfere with, and that creates a claim against anyone who would deprive you of it.  The Declaration of Independence explains that people posses certain rights by nature and that governments exist to secure these rights.

What does this mean for the Constitution? By creating a document of limited, enumerated powers, the framers crafted a government that would put individuals in the enjoyment of their rights. The Constitution outlines the structure of American government, by allocating powers to particular branches over specific subjects, but rarely discusses rights. At various points, the Constitution prohibits ex post facto laws and bills of attainders at the state and national level, requires criminal trials to have juries, and garuntees the writ of habeas corpus (except in cases of rebellion or invasion). Yet, the word "right" appears only once in the entire document: the Patents Clause, which empowers Congress "to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries."

The First Congress amended the Constitution to include the first ten amendments, collectively known as the Bill of Rights. James Madison drafted them not only to counter false interpretations of each branch's enumerated powers but also to support a public understanding of individual liberty that would assist citizens in the task of defending their liberties.

The First Amendment clarifies that the federal government may not interfere with particular substantive political rights involving religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Likewise, the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. The next six amendments deal with more procedural political rights, mostly restraints on criminal procedure that were present in most of the state constitutions. For instance, the Fourth Amendment outlines the procedures for obtaining a warrant, and the Fifth Amendment prohibits the sovereign from trying a person twice for the same offense. The Ninth and Tenth Amendments summarize the Constitution's purpose-to secure individual liberty not by having a comprehensive list of rights but by allocating powers between state governments and the branches of the federal government.
 
The Bill of Rights, properly understood, serves as a check on the federal government's power. In Securing Liberty: The Purpose and Importance of the Bill of Rights, Joseph Postell argues that, "implicit in the story surrounding our Bill of Rights is the proposition that the liberties of a nation can only be secured by citizens of firm conviction who understand our rights and liberties and will actively defend them." This makes understanding the nature of rights all the more important. If we continue to define "rights" to be anything we could possibly want, and insist that government is obligated pay for them, then we will place ourselves in the position of constantly appealing to government to give us more "rights." In this subservient position, we cannot sufficiently guard our liberty from government encroachment.

As you celebrate Bill of Rights Day this Thursday, take time to read the Constitution and the first ten amendments. Challenge yourself to study your natural rights for the sake of knowing your liberties and defending them from encroachments.

Morning Bell: Why Would Obama Veto Job Creation?

What's so offensive that would cause the President to level a veto threat? A provision in H.R. 3630, the "Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2011," that would provide for the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline project that would bring oil from Canada. Heritage's Nicolas Loris explains that it would mean "access to easy imports from our northern neighbor, the creation of thousands of jobs, and the generation of revenue for the states where the pipeline passes. Montana, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas are collectively projected to collect $5.2 billion in property tax revenue as a result of building the pipeline."

 

The Keystone XL measure is just one piece of the bill introduced by Representative Dave Camp (R-MI), along with several cosponsors. Though not perfect, it includes some positive measures that could bring comfort to the millions of Americans who are struggling under the Obama economy and are looking for hope this holiday season. Camp said of the bill, "With its passage, Americans can be confident that these programs and provisions will be available next year, that they will not result in decades of debt and that they will be paid for with fiscally responsible reforms, not job-killing tax hikes."

Prosecutors in New York City have decided that the dissemination of truth near American courthouses threatens to rock the very foundations of the American legal system.

For years, retired Penn State chemistry professor Julian Heicklen has handed out literature to passersby in front of the Manhattan courthouse, informing them of the rights of jurors. As stated by the Fully Informed Jury Association, "the primary function of the independent juror is not, as many think, to dispense punishment to fellow citizens accused of breaking various laws, but rather to protect fellow citizens from tyrannical abuses of power by government."

A new report from the Media Research Center (MRC) focusing on the type of questions  the media asks  Republicans underscores the deep bias reporters have against religious people.   

A Republican candidate has been asked by reporters if God told her to run for president. Other reporters have questioned whether another candidate's having led a prayer rally was constitutional.

Still other reporters, feigning genuine curiosity, have asked another Republican candidate about statements against Mormonism made by a pastor whose church he attended.

Nevertheless, if you've heard of a reporter asking any of the Congressional Black Caucus members who have converted to Islam about  their views of the sections of the Koran  calling for the murder of Christians and Jews, that puts you one up on the rest of us.

He's capably navigated his way through his big government tendencies so far and miraculously still has solid support in the Tea Party. Will the latest damaging clip have any impact? Santorum to Beck: Gingrich is as progressive as Ron Paul is Libertarian   

Glenn talked with one of the few actual conservatives left in the race, Rick Santorum, and begged him to 'just win' the primary. The former Senator has a long way to go but anything can happen. Santorum was excited about all the candidates dropping out of the Trump debate because he said he doesn't speak in '4 second bites' and is eager to have a shot at more time to be heard.
