Quote of the Day - November 24, 2011

"Thanksgiving

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson, (1803 - 1882).

The Real Story of Thanksgiving

November 23, 2011

RUSH: Now time for a tradition, an annual tradition, and that is The Real Story of Thanksgiving from my book that I wrote back in the early nineties. I wrote two of them, actually. In one of the books I wrote, The Real Story of Thanksgiving. And reading from it has become something we do every year on the program because it's still not taught. The myth of Thanksgiving is still what is taught, and that myth is basically that a bunch of thieves from Europe arrived quite by accident at Plymouth Rock, and if it weren't for the Indians showing them how to grow corn and slaughter turkeys and how to swallow and stuff, that they would have died of starvation and so forth. The Indians were great -- and then, in a total show of appreciation, we totally wiped out the Indians!

We took their country from 'em. We started racism, sexism, bigotry, homophobia; spread syphilis; and, basically, destroyed the environment. That is the multicultural version of Thanksgiving, and it simply isn't true. The real version of Thanksgiving is in my second best-seller, 2.5 million copies in hardback: See, I Told You So. "Chapter 6, Dead White Guys, or What the History Books Never Told You: The True Story of Thanksgiving -- The story of the Pilgrims begins in the early part of the seventeenth century ... The Church of England under King James I was persecuting anyone and everyone who did not recognize its absolute civil and spiritual authority. Those who challenged ecclesiastical authority and those who believed strongly in freedom of worship were hunted down, imprisoned, and sometimes executed for their beliefs." In England.

Thomas Jefferson: "Whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers....a nullification of the act is the rightful remedy."

But what IS nullification? How does it happen and work? Since September 2010, the Tenth Amendment Center has been hosting a national tour to educate and activate people on this topic. People are learning the constitutional basis, when it's been used in history, and how it is happening around the country and how YOU can stop DC right in your own state.

Alexander's Essay - November 23, 2011

Gratitude and Thanksgiving

The genuine spirit of Thanksgiving.

"I do recommend and assign Thursday ... next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be." --George Washington (October 3, 1789)

Harvest of Plenty.

My family will be celebrating this Thanksgiving in the mountains of Tennessee with extended family and friends in warm homes with plenty. Though no day of the year passes without expressions of gratitude to my Creator for His provision, I sometimes take blessings for granted. Most often my lack of gratitude stems from preoccupation with the challenges I face as an individual and those we face as a nation.

I welcome this Thanksgiving week as an opportunity to pause, step back, and reflect upon how blessed we really are.

One of the maxims by which we strive to live in our home, "Live third person, serving God first, others second and ourselves third," is supported by the fact that whenever we lose ourselves in selfish preoccupation, we can assuredly find ourselves through serving others. It is in that service that we lift the veil of vanity and rediscover God's purpose for our lives.

One of the ways God has richly blessed this humble servant is by allowing me to serve Patriots across our nation and around the world. Along with my Patriot team, I am honored to share the burden of defending our inheritance of Liberty with pen, though our swords are always at the ready. We are grateful to stand with you, among millions of other Patriots, steadfast in that defense.

To put our national Day of Thanksgiving into proper context is to consider it as emanating from the Hand of Providence. With this in mind, I invite you to take a moment and read about the The History and Legacy of Thanksgiving, and the proclamations for those that followed.

Thanks be to God

For a fine perspective on our great history, I encourage you to view "We still hold these truths" from my colleague, constitutional scholar Matt Spalding.

To promote a better understanding of Thanksgiving among the young people in your life, introduce them to our Thanksgiving Quiz.

For inspiration, you might read the text of My Beautiful America, whose author is a fellow Tennessean, Charlie Daniels. Better yet, listen to the song from this great Patriot.

Tell us for what you are thankful!

I humbly thank you for the privilege of serving as editor and publisher of The Patriot Post. On behalf of your Patriot team and our National Advisory Committee, I wish you a peaceful Thanksgiving, and God's blessings to you and your family.

"Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations." --Psalm 100:4-5

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion'd stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.

America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.

O beautiful for heroes prov'd
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country lov'd,
And mercy more than life.

America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev'ry gain divine.

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears.

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.

How the pilgrims experimented with socialism and paid the price through death.

Friend --

The first time my friend heard Michael Medved's radio program about the stunning, untold history of Thanksgiving, he was driving to be with friends and family for the holiday.

When he arrived at his destination, he was so inspired about the men and women who shaped America's founding, that he didn't want to leave the car because he would have to turn off the radio in the middle of the program!

And now I want you to hear it, so I called Michael Medved, who is a member of CURE's board, to make sure that he's offering this fascinating story again. He is! Since 2007, Medved has been telling this story every Thanksgiving on his national radio program.

If you've never heard Medved's Thanksgiving story, then you are about to have all your assumptions about our Thanksgiving holiday challenged.

Particularly, Medved talks about the economic model the pilgrims tried when they first came to New England. We all know the story about the failures and the eventual success of the colony, but what Medved explains is why there was such failure.

Medved tells when the pilgrims arrived, they instituted a socialist collective where everyone would work together and everyone would get a share of the crops.

After a couple of years, the governor of the colony, William Bradford, realized that they were starving to death because their socialist system was taking away the people's motivation to work for their own food. Through those years, everyone lost a member of their family and eventually half the colony had died.

To reverse the course of destruction, Bradford gave everyone their own private parcel of land and noted in his diary that suddenly all hands were industrious. The crop yield in 1623 was actually in surplus and they held a thanksgiving feast where they were able to provide food for themselves. Because the pilgrims abandoned socialism, we're now able to have our own Thanksgiving in the most abundant and prosperous nation on earth.

But Medved provides a cautionary tale for America. He reminds us to be vigilant. Medved quotes Bradford where he wrote in his diary:  we must see the worth of their labor so we will not lose what our forefathers obtained through so much hardship.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Your friend for freedom,

Joblessness and Regulation: The "Mass Layoff" Fallacy

By James Gattuso

Do regulations kill jobs?

Not according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). In a floor speech Nov. 15, Reid argued that the idea that regulations cost jobs was a "myth," claiming that according to the Labor Department, "only a tiny fraction of layoffs have anything at all to do with tighter regulation." In fact, he said, "last year, only three-tenths of 1 percent of people who lost their jobs were let go principally because of government regulation or intervention."

Reid is not the only one to cite these numbers. They have been widely cited in media outlets ranging from The New York Times and the Washington Post to Mother Jones as proof that regulation is not a contributing cause of America's stubbornly high jobless rate. However, the statistics are of doubtful accuracy and have little to do with the primary cause of joblessness in the U.S. economy today: the lack of job creation.

Be Thankful

I love Thanksgiving, a uniquely American holiday.  It's not just a day off work, a day devoted to parades and football, or a day to eat turkeys and pumpkin pies.  As the name signifies, it is about giving thanks to God for the blessings we enjoy.

But today many in America are not particularly thankful. We have seen them on the streets in our major cities, occupying parks and other public venues. To them America is an oppressor, our culture is backwards, free enterprise is a failure.

Many more Americans, while not so negative, unfortunately feel our nation is in decline today. Even our president says we've become "lazy," "soft" and that we have "lost our ambition, our imagination, and our willingness" to do great things. I refuse to believe that!

Last week, John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, wrote a column on job creation for the Wall Street Journal. Its premise is that freedom breeds success. I'm not going to quote his policy prescriptions here, but I do want to share with you his view of America.

"Is the United States exceptional? Of course we are! Two hundred years ago we were one of the poorest countries in the world. We accounted for less than 1% of the world's total GDP. Today our GDP is 23% of the world's total and more than twice as large as the No. 2 country, China.

"America became the wealthiest country because for most of our history we have followed the basic principles of economic freedom: property rights, freedom to trade internationally, minimal governmental regulation of business, sound money, relatively low taxes, the rule of law, entrepreneurship, freedom to fail, and voluntary exchange.

"The success of economic freedom in increasing human prosperity, extending our life spans, and improving the quality of our lives in countless ways is the most extraordinary global story of the past 200 years. Gross domestic product per capita has increased by a factor of 1,000% across the world and almost 2,000% in the U.S. during these last two centuries.

"In 1800, 85% of everyone alive lived on less than $1 per day (in 2000 dollars). Today only 17% do. If current long-term trend lines of economic growth continue we will see abject poverty almost completely eradicated in the 21st century."

In spite of the challenges we face today, I believe all of us can be thankful to be Americans.  We are the descendants of the patriots who declared that "All men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Those words inspire us still and bring hope to millions around the world.  With all of America's problems, we are still the nation that represents man's last best hope on earth. I pray that in the weeks ahead, each of us will work harder to give this nation a "new birth of freedom" so that America can again be a "shining city upon a hill."

Tomorrow, when Carol and I celebrate Thanksgiving with our family, we will pray for America, for our leaders, for our men and women in uniform and for all of you.  We are very thankful for your friendship and generosity.  God bless you, my friends. And thank you for being our partners in this great adventure.

Our offices will be closed tomorrow and Friday.  This will be my last "End of Day" report until Monday, November 28th.

Dear Patriot,

As we give thanks to our great Nation with family and friends today, I thought I would pass on George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation.  His words stand in stark contrast to today's proclamation from the current occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue -- no mention of God, but he does cite football in the first 10 seconds of his address.

Wishing you a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving!  May God continue to bless you and our great Republic.

All the best,

Jeff McGeary

President, Thomas Jefferson Club

Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation:

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our sasety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

The so called 'Arab Spring' and protests across the Gulf region have not promoted real democracy with few exceptions, but did lead to a shrinkage of US allies and moderate states. The Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey - all have their own internal problems - Muslim Brotherhood, proxies of Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran, Al Qaeda franchisees. Jordan has its own internal threat from a large Palestinian population. While Israel has always stood alone, with the exception of a big brother in the back of the room - the United States - under this administration one has to wonder how far will Washington go to protect Tel Aviv?

The Future of Egypt

In the wake of the latest instability everyone has an opinion on the future of Egypt. But the future of Egypt is the past, not the distant past of its pre-Arab culture, but a repetition of the last century. In a region that has never escaped from the past, history is not a road, it is a circle. Travel far enough along it and you come back to where you were.

There was once a time when the UK thought that Egypt and Jordan were the best regional prospects, but instead of becoming Arabic accented versions of Albion, today it is London that has taken on the accent and the Hijab.

Cairo has been shedding its colonial cosmopolitanism for half a century. The Muslim Brotherhood arsons sped up the process, and the Islamization of Egypt has been gaining ground for some time, but the cause and effect is a little more complicated than that.

Egypt wasn't really cosmopolitan, it was ruled by a Western power that was and the country's upper class mirrored their foreign rulers. That upper class still exists, the Tahrir Square protest organizers drew heavily on the country's own top 1 percent (not counting the Brotherhood) and the sons and daughters of the extremely well off, who tour Europe and America, and speak English well, make up a large percent of the activists, the bloggers and twitter users. And they're also irrelevant to the country as a whole.

As Egypt has drifted from the UK's orbit to the USSR and the US, fragments of the culture and politics have lodged, but have never gone very deep. The Brotherhood may have borrowed its organization from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, and the Egyptian left may be drawing heavily on Europe for its inspiration, but these are means to an end, they are not what the conflict is actually about.

Conflicts over power are about power, the nature of power and who wields it. Will it be the oligarchic capitalists, their activist kids, the military or the Imams of Al-Azhar University? The answer is probably all of the above.

The End of the Peace Process

The Knish makes the point that since the West can no longer offer normalization as a carrot to Israel, as if it ever could, there is no benefit to trying to make peace. The Islamists want no part of normalization and Israel wants no part of them. Ted Belman

By Sultan Knish
The "peace process" which created two terrorist states inside Israel may have begun in Oslo, but it ended in Cairo. Normalizing relations with the rest of the Middle East was one of the carrots that got the Jewish state hopping down the appeasement trial- and that carrot is now officially off the table.

The days when Thomas Friedman and his Saudi buddies could talk about normalization have passed. The Arab Spring saw to that and with Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and an unknown number of others sliding into the Islamist camp, and out of reach of negotiations, there's a New Middle East that has even less in common with the old gentlemanly diplomacy model than the old one did. Some of the dimmer...

Ethiopian Jews Settle Into Life in Israel

VOA

Recent immigrants from Ethiopia to Israel are studying Hebrew in the early morning at the Beit Canada Absorption Center - one of 16 in the country that are new arrivals' first home - in Ashkelon, Israel, November 2011.

Israel is marking the 20th anniversary of a massive airlift of Ethiopian Jews called Operation Solomon. The arrival and integration of tens of thousands of Ethiopians into Israeli society have presented major challenges and brought many lessons.

Early morning at the Beit Canada Absorption Center in Ashkelon, one of 16 in the country that are new arrivals' first home. Recent immigrants from Ethiopia are studying Hebrew. They are called Falasha Mura, Ethiopian Jews whose ancestors converted to Christianity but who have chosen to return to Judaism. They have been granted the same right of return to Israel that Jewish law gives all Jews.

More than 80,000 Ethiopian Jews have immigrated to Israel in the past three decades...

MOPping Up: The USA's 30,000 Pound Bomb

Defense Industry Daily

During the Second World War, attacking heavily protected targets like U-boat pens and protected "V-weapon" facilities was a key challenge. Enter a brilliant British engineer named Barnes Wallis, fresh off the dam-busting "Upkeep" bouncing bomb. His next trick was a 12,000 pound weapon called the "
Tallboy," a streamlined, spin-stabilized bomb with a claimed terminal velocity of Mach 1 when dropped from 20,000 feet. That mass, carrying 5,200 pounds of Torpex D1 explosive, made a crater 80 feet deep x 100 feet across when it hit. By 1945, Wallis' next "Earthquake bomb " was in production - the 22,000 pound "Grand Slam." His creations made short work of U-boat pens.

These bombs went out of fashion with the advent of nuclear weapons, but if you wait long enough, fashion comes around again. Enter the USA's new Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP)....

Norwegian Dhimmitude

Norway Embraces Islamist Tyranny

by Bruce Bawer
November 16, 2011 at 5:00 am

http://www.hudson-ny.org/2581/norway-islamist

Anti-Semitism in Norway, where I have lived for twelve years, is over the top. I have never quite gotten used to it. Every now and then I hear or read something that reminds me that I am living in Europe, in a country that was occupied by the Nazis, and where a lot of people were perfectly okay with that. I think it is fair to say that anti-Semitism in Norway is most virulent among the cultural elite â€" the academics, intellectuals, writers, journalists, politicians, and technocrats â€" although thanks to the media and schools, it has trickled down to many ordinary Norwegians, some of whom may never even...

Why Do Catholics Keep Funding the Radical Left?

By Kathryn Scharplaz, AMERICAN THINKER

Every November, including this one, American Catholics - who constitute approximately 25% of the U.S. population - are asked to contribute to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). The Catholic faithful have been told that their donations will go to fight poverty.

Little do most of them realize what their money will actually fund. CCHD is the brainchild of Saul Alinsky, the "father of community organizing." Alinsky (1909-1972) had numerous connections in the Catholic community of his native Chicago, some of them nearly as radical as he was. He helped start CCHD in 1969.

Unfortunately, the benevolent-sounding term "community organizing" has a very specific meaning amongst people working in the Alinsky tradition - and it's not what you would think. In fact, a more fitting term would be "community disorganizing." Alinskyites are trained to go into poor communities and...

Transcript proves that Durban III is a charade

By ANNE BAYEFSKY

General Assembly voting this week again on Durban agenda.

In yet another effort to demonize Israel on the political battlefield, the UN General Assembly-which can bear a striking resemblance to the game of Whac-A-Mole-will adopt a new resolution this week to promote the Durban "anti-racism" declaration.

Back in September the UN sponsored "Durban III," an event intended by Islamic states and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay to breathe new life into the ten-year-old anti-Israel vendetta which began in South Africa in 2001. Despite the unprecedented boycott by all Western veto-holding members of the Security Council - the US, Britain and France - Durban and its insidious message have popped up a mere two months later.

The regenerative nature of UN armaments, in the form of cyclical resolutions and "follow-up" mechanisms, makes them not merely annoying but dangerous. Due to this circuitous...

Report: Dozens of U.S. spies captured in Lebanon and Iran

By Barak Ravid, Haaretz

Dozens of spies working for the CIA were captured recently in Lebanon and Iran, current and former U.S. officials told The Associated Press and ABC News on Monday.

The CIA's operations in Lebanon have been badly damaged after Hezbollah identified and captured a number of the U.S. spies, officials told The Associated Press.

Hezbollah's longtime leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, boasted on television in June that he had rooted out at least two CIA spies who had infiltrated the ranks of Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers a terrorist group closely allied with Iran. Though the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon officially denied the accusation, current and former officials concede that it happened and the damage has spread even further.

According to a report by ABC News, there were two distinct espionage rings targeting Iran and Hezbollah in which spies were recruited by the CIA.

Current and former U.S. officials said the two different spy rings were discovered...

FBI Statistics Belie Islamophobia Hysteria

bY Jonathan S. Tobin, COMMENTARY
It has become an accepted trope of contemporary journalism that American Muslims are under siege and beset by hatred and prejudice. But the evidence for this conventional wisdom is lacking. The story line of Muslim persecution in the United States has always been a matter of anecdotes and perception, not facts. That truth was confirmed this week when the FBI released their
annual crime statistics report which showed once again that hate crimes against Muslims remain rare and are far outnumbered by attacks on Jews.

The report is not perfect, since not all parts of the country do a good job compiling the data, but it provides an important snapshot of the state of the nation regarding bias crimes. But the numbers speak for themselves. In 2010, only 13.2 percent of religion-based attacks were directed at Muslims. By comparison, 65.4 percent of such crimes were directed at Jews. This shows a slight increase over the last two years (the raw...

Obama Must Act to Stop Hamas-Fatah Deal

By Jonathan S. Tobin, COMMENTARY
President Obama and his cheerleaders in the media may be fed up with Israel and its democratically elected government, but the Palestinian Authority appears to be about to take one step closer to effectively ending all hope for peace in the foreseeable future. Journalist Khaled Abu Toameh reports that PA leader Mahmoud Abbas? has agreed to a key concession that will solidify the Hamas-Fatah unity pact first signed in May. The result will guarantee a strong Hamas role in the new Palestinian government that will ensure it will be impossible for the PA to agree to any deal with Israel, no matter what concessions are forced out of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or where Israel's borders might be drawn.

One of the key holdups to a Hamas-Fatah unity government was Hamas' insistence Abbas dump Salam Fayyad? as prime minister. Fayyad is widely respected in the West for his fight against corruption, his efforts to build a viable Palestinian...

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood Versus Army

Disastrous Elections or Bloody Civil War?
by Barry Rubin, PJ MEDIA

Only days before parliamentary elections, Egypt is in a huge crisis whose outcome will determine the future of almost 80 million people and perhaps the Arabic-speaking world's fate for decades to come.

Will the army go ahead with elections that will be won by the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical Salafist groups, thus producing an Islamist regime?

Or will it cancel elections, declare martial law in some form, and set off a passionate civil conflict?

Or will it find some compromise that quiets the disorder but doesn't solve the problems (see below for the proposed new deal)?

That's quite a difficult choice and not one the army prefers. Understandably, the military has a third alternative: set up some compromise rules for the new Egyptian state that leave it feeling secure even if this plan sacrifices a lot of other factors.

The nominal cause of this upheaval are the demonstrations in Tahrir square...

Polish FM Says Israel Must Accept Nuclear Iran

Laura: This is absolutely appalling.  How dare this guy lecture to Israel that the country must accept living with the prospect of annihilation and not use military force to preempt Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons? This is literally a matter of Israel's very existence, not merely an ordinary national security threat. Europe has always been willing to sacrifice Jewish lives to appease evil or for their own foreign policy interests.  They are beneath contempt.

'Israel must learn to accept a nuclear Iran'

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski delivers pessimistic message to Israel: Military option is unrealistic * Poland currently holds EU rotating presidency * EU members agree to expand sanctions against Iran.

The Heart of the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Contentions

Rick Richman@jpundit

Contentions commenter Maines Michael points us to Bat Ye'or's incisive article in the November New English Review, entitled "The Palestinization of UNESCO" (which follows Robert Wolfe's equally incisive article in the August NER, entitled "Settlements Are the Issue"). Taken together, the two articles cut to the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Bat Ye'or's article focuses on the claim "that Jewish existence in its ancestral homeland, Judea and Samaria, is an 'occupation' - a colonization:"

In this way, Israel has become a state that is occupying its own historical homeland. In Orwellian language propagandists speak of "the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land" that is called Judea, and not of the ethnic and religious cleansing of Jews from their homeland through wars, expulsions, dispossession and the dehumanizing apartheid rule of dhimmitude.

Wolfe's article focuses on the fact that the "settlers"...

Why don't Jews vote Republican? Its the Jesus Christ thing.

Ted Belman. Medved nails it when he says

"The answer is that distinctive religious attitudes among Jews play a greater role in shaping voting behavior than ideology, education levels, income, or any sense of ethnic solidarity.

"The voting behavior of American Jews conforms closely to the preferences of the irreligious and the unaffiliated precisely because so many of them are, in fact, theologically unaffiliated.

He goes on to say that Jews "cringe" at the thought of a believer in Jesus Christ becoming President. They will never get in bed with Christ believers no matter how much they love and want to protect Israel. This is in fact visceral for them. Secular Jews have no trouble embracing Muslims, who hate and kill Jews, but don't believe in Jesus Christ.

Will this change? No. Will the GOP change as suggested by Medved? No.

Christians will not understand this reaction because for them JC represents love and all that's good in the...

Egyptian uncertainties

Egyptians might be willing to pay the economic price of cutting relations with Israel and the US to promote their Islamist agenda.

Watching from the sidelines in Israel as central Cairo is torn by deadly clashes in the run-up to parliamentary elections, one cannot help but fear for the future. The Muslim Brotherhood and Salafist parties that openly oppose the existence of the Jewish state are expected to do well in the elections.

And even so-called liberal parties vying for Egyptians' votes are far from pro-Israel in their outlook.

For instance, Egyptian presidential candidate Amr Moussa announced in August that "Israel should know that the era in which our sons are killed without a harsh response on our part is over for good."

He spoke after Israeli forces killed six Egyptian border guards in a counter-raid designed to capture Palestinian terrorists who infiltrated Israel near Eilat and killed eight Israelis.

Just a few weeks later, Egyptian crowds stormed the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and the Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby, also an Egyptian, have both announced that the Camp David peace treaty isn't "sacred" and may have to be altered.

America's first socialist republic

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 06:27 AM PST

(Scott Johnson)

We provided the platform launching Professor Paul Rahe into the blogosphere. He is one of the country's most distinguished scholars, but he has also proved to be a natural blogger as well. He now posts regularly at Big Government and at Ricochet.

In view of his classic study of Republics Ancient and Modern, Professor Rahe is the academy's foremost authority on the history of republics. Although his recent work on "soft despotism" is not far from these Thanksgiving reflections we first posted on Thanksgiving 2009, neither is his older work on republics:

On Thanksgiving, it is customary that Americans recall to mind the experience of the Pilgrim Fathers. This year, it is especially appropriate that we do so - as we pause, in the midst of an economic maelstrom, to count our remaining blessings and to reflect on the consequences of our election of a President and a Congress intent on "spread[ing] the wealth around."

We have much to learn from the history of the Plymouth Plantation. For, in their first year in the New World, the Pilgrims conducted an experiment in social engineering akin to what is now contemplated; and, after an abortive attempt at cultivating the land in common, their leaders reflected on the results in a manner that Americans today should find instructive.

William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth Colony, reports that, at that time, he and his advisers considered "how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop than they had done, that they might not still thus languish in misery." And "after much debate of things," he then adds, they chose to abandon communal property, deciding that "they should set corn every man for his own particular" and assign "to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number, for that end."

The results, he tells us, were gratifying in the extreme, "for it made all hands very industrious" and "much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been." Even "the women now went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn; which before would allege weakness and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression."

Moreover, he observes, "the experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years . . . amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanity of that conceit of Plato's and other ancients applauded by some of later times . . . that the taking away of property and bringing in community into a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing." In practice, America's first socialist experiment "was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort."

In practice, "the young men, that were most able and fit for labor and service, did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children without any recompense. The strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes than he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalized in labors and victuals, clothes etc., with the meaner and younger sort, thought it some indignity and disrespect unto them. And for men's wives to be commanded to do service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc., they deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could many husbands well brook it."

Naturally enough, quarrels ensued. "If it did not cut off those relations that God hath set amongst men," Bradford notes, "yet it did at least much diminish and take off the mutual respects that should be preserved amongst them. And [it] would have been worse if they had been men of another condition" less given to the fear of God. "Let none object," he concludes, that "this is men's corruption, and nothing to the course itself. I answer, seeing all men have this corruption in them, God in His wisdom saw another course fitter for them."

The moral is perfectly clear. Self-interest cannot be expunged. Where there is private property and its possession and acquisition are protected and treated with respect, self-interest and jealousy can be deployed against laziness and the desire for that which is not one's own, and there tends to be plenty as a consequence.

But where one takes from those who join talent with industry to provide for those lacking either or both, where the fruits of one man's labor are appropriated to benefit another who is less productive, self-interest reinforces laziness, jealousy engenders covetousness, and these combine in a bitter stew to produce both conflict and dearth.

Paul A. Rahe holds the Charles O. Lee and Louise K. Lee Chair in the Western Heritage at Hillsdale College. He is the author, most recently, of the companion studies Montesquieu and the Logic of Liberty: War, Religion, Commerce, Climate, Terrain, Technology, Uneasiness of Mind, the Spirit of Political Vigilance, and the Foundations of the Modern Republic and Soft Despotism, Democracy's Drift: Montesquieu, Rousseau, Tocqueville, and the Modern Prospect.

Happy Deep-Fried Thanksgiving

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 05:18 AM PST

(Steven Hayward)

Making the rounds right now is this William Shatner video (is there anything Shatner can't do?) about the hazards of deep frying your turkey (3:40 long).

Well, I've done it without burning down the house for the last two years; this video showing the set up and immersion without fire is just over 1 minute:

A longer  and more complete version of turkey frying from two years ago, showing the results after cooking (2:52 long) is here. This year it's back to more old-fashioned techniques: one in a slow-smoker, and another on a BBQ rotisserie.

The Occupiers In Two Sad Photos

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 04:58 PM PST

(John Hinderaker)

Are the Occupiers the lamest political movement in history? These photos suggest as much. This one, via InstaPundit, was taken by the great Zombie for PJ Media. Somehow the spirit of JFK has lost a bit in the current generation:

This transposition pretty well sums up the demise of the Democratic Party and American liberalism.

Then there is this one, taken at U.C. Davis:

Arrest ideas? Heck, in today's America we can't even arrest leftists for public defecation and masturbation; we will be lucky if we catch the Occupiers who committed murder. As long as the idea consists of sitting in a tree and banging on a drum once in a while, I'm pretty sure those wicked, pepper-spraying coppers will leave her alone. On the other hand, if lameness ever becomes a crime, these folks could be in a world of trouble!

The Real Problem With Obamacare...

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 04:06 PM PST

(John Hinderaker)

...is not that it will cost too much, or even that it will worsen our medical care, although both of those things are true. The real problem with socialized medicine-the eventual establishment of which is the purpose of Obamacare, according to Barack Obama-is that it will destroy our freedom. Mark Steyn has written that government medicine alters forever the relationship between state and citizen: once you are dependent on the government for your health care, you are no longer a freeborn citizen. You are the subject of an all-powerful state.

So Michael Ramirez hits the nail on the head: the trouble with Obamacare is that it will destroy our freedom, perhaps forever:

The Democrats's Favorite Republican

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 03:24 PM PST

(John Hinderaker)

After every presidential debate, the candidates collect favorable reviews-or, much like movie ads, favorable phrases-and email them to their list of political junkies. Some of those compendia are, of course, more impressive than others. This is what came in today from Jon Huntsman:

Gov. Huntsman knocked it out of the park at last night's CNN foreign policy debate, distinguishing himself as the only candidate we can trust to lead on day one. ...

But don't take my word for it; read some of the post-debate reaction and analysis:

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough: "On foreign policy, Huntsman has no peer in this Republican field. That was obvious tonight."

Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele: "Romney's 'commanders on the ground' slammed up against Huntsman 'Commander in Chief' makes the decision and got rocked."

The New York Times' Nate Silver's final debate grade for Gov. Huntsman: "A-"

Politico's Jonathan Martin on Huntsman's final debate answer: "One of best Huntsman answers of year."

Huffington Post's Jon Ward: "Good rebuttal by Huntsman to Romney on Afghanistan. One of JH's strongest moments this campaign."

Boston Globe's Glen Johnson: "Jon Huntsman Excels in Foreign Policy Debate"

With the exception of Michael Steele, these are not endorsements that normally would be welcomed by Republicans or that would tend to influence Republican voters positively. It may be, of course, that this was the best Huntsman could do. But you do sometimes get the odd feeling that Huntsman isn't quite sure which party's nomination he is running for.

Minnesota Public Radio wants you!

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 01:43 PM PST

(Scott Johnson)

Our friends at Minnesota Public Radio have previously sought to recruit Power Line readers into their network of conservative sources. Melody Ng of MPR has contacted us to renew the request and invite readers to participate in a special survey.

Unlikely as it may seem, given our recurring complaints about public radio journalism, we have an amicable and respectful relationship with MPR. MPR is hosting a one-hour special with John Hinderaker that will be taped next week on the evening of November 29 for broadcast on November 30. Melody writes:

This may be a good time to invite Twin Cities readers to join the live audience at John Hinderaker's Bright Ideas show. We'd love to have more Power Line readers participating in the conversation. The taping is next Tuesday, November 29. The taping starts at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30. Everyone's invited to stay for a reception after the show. People can reserve seats on the MPR website.

You asked when the show airs, for people who aren't local or can't make the taping. It will be on Midday on November 30 at noon CST. So people can either listen to MPR News on their radios (here's a station map for the state) or listen online. It'll be archived on the Bright Ideas Web page, so people can listen anytime after the 30th.

Now to the business at hand. Melody has drawn up a survey with my input. We would appreciate the participation of our readers. Here is her invitationt to Power Line readers:

Journalists are only as good as our sources. That's why we need you. With the presidential election next year, and the GOP nomination yet undecided, news organizations are hungry to hear from conservatives - to find out what's driving your vote.

But we need you even more beyond politics - as expert sources on schools and taxes, the economy and the legal system, on health care and everything else we cover. Conservatives are an essential part of this country, and your voices, stories and perspectives must be represented in the media.

If you feel that mainstream media don't currently do a good job of representing your views, then please take this opportunity to talk to us. The newsroom doors are open to you.

I know that some of you likely distrust my intentions. Scott Johnson asked me to say something to address your concerns. I'm not sure how best to do that. I can promise what we pledge to all the 130,000+ people around the country who are sources in our Public Insight Network. Anything you share with us is confidential to our newsrooms unless you explicitly give us permission to broadcast or publish it. We will never spam you or sell your contact information.

My colleagues and I consider it an honor to have our jobs as journalists, and I believe to my core that we want to report with integrity. You may not always agree with a news story - I know I don't. But we do not wish to misrepresent anyone, and we'd treat you and what you tell us with respect.

You can become a source by answering a short survey telling us what events, books, people and other experiences have influenced your political viewpoint. Here's the link:

When did you know you were a conservative?

Your story will help us tell the story of conservative voters. And, we'll be in touch in the future for other reporting.

Melody promises to share the survey results with us and I think they will be of interest to readers.

In speaking with her over the past few weeks I have found Melody to be an incredibly nice and reflective professional. She offers to speak personally to readers who may be interested by have concerns about participation in the project or survey:

I'm happy to answer your questions or address your concerns anytime. You can find me at mng@americanpublicmedia.org or 651-290-1499. And if you're ever in St. Paul, I will literally throw the newsroom doors open to you. Stop by for a visit.

Thanks for your time and consideration. I hope to hear from you soon.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Uh-Oh: Don't Look Now, But. . .

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 11:21 AM PST

(Steven Hayward)

Need to take a break from reading Climategate 2.0 emails, because I'm getting eye strain.  More bad news out of the Eurozone, where a German bond auction has failed miserably (Megan McArdle at the Atlantic has a good roundup, but what do you expect when Jon Corzine exits the Eurobond market?), and the Dexia bailout may be coming unraveled.

Meanwhile, while all eyes are fixed on the Eurozone, China may be on the brink of trouble: manufacturing activity is down to a three-year low, on top of reports of rapidly falling real estate prices.

And oh yeah-the American economy still ain't looking so good, either.

But be of good holiday cheer: Tomorrow I'll post up some video of my deep fried turkey triumphs.

The Supercommittee's Failure: What Really Happened

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 10:33 AM PST

(John Hinderaker)

Finger-pointing is in full swing, but the reality is that the Supercommittee's failure to come to an agreement on spending reductions is just one chapter in a very long story-the story of the Democratic Party's absolute refusal to come to grips with the country's fiscal crisis. Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee have produced this helpful time line, with links to supporting documentation. The story of the Democrats' ongoing malfeasance needs to be better understood:

January 25 - In his State of the Union address, President Obama proposes freezing "annual domestic spending for the next five years." This freeze would lock in elevated spending levels (24 percent non-defense discretionary, not including stimulus) and produce an estimated $3.8 trillion in deficits over the period in question. Subsequent analysis revealed that, because the White House shifted and hid new spending, non-defense discretionary spending would actually increase even further next year.

February 14 - President Obama proposes a budget with $8.7 trillion in new spending (CBO's re-estimate actually finds $9.6 trillion in new spending).

February 15 - The House of Representatives begins debate on a bill that would cut spending by $61 billion. President Obama promptly issues a veto threat.

April 11 - Press Secretary Jay Carney: "We should move quickly to raise the debt limit and we support a clean piece of legislation to do that."

April 13 - President Obama delivers a speech where he lays out a "framework" that he claims will lead to $4 trillion in deficit reduction over the next 10-12 years. In reality, using OMB's own numbers, deficits under the "framework" are $3.2 trillion higher than the president's own fiscal commission.

April 15 - The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passes its budget, which cuts $6 trillion in comparison to the President's budget.

April 19 - S&P assigns a negative outlook to the U.S. credit rating, signaling at least a one-in-three likelihood that the agency will lower the nation's long-term rating.

May 1 - Total federal spending since President Obama took office reaches approximately $8 trillion.

May 11 - Austan Goolsbee, chair of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, says it is "quite insane" to tie spending cuts to the debt limit increase.

May 17 - Chairman Conrad continues to delay the unveiling of his latest secret budget, announcing that "I'll say something later - not today, probably... There are a lot of conversations under way."

May 18 - Majority Leader Reid says it would be "foolish" for Senate Democrats to offer a budget.

May 19 - Chairman Conrad announces he will not reveal a budget to the public until after the Gang of Six produces a proposal.

May 25 - The Senate rejects President Obama's budget by a vote of 0-97.

May 23 - Senator Schumer, when asked why there is no alternative to the House-passed budget, answers, "To put other budgets out there is not the point."

May 26 - GOP Senators join Ranking Member Sessions in asking Reid not to break for the Memorial Day recess until Senate Democrats bring forward a budget so the Senate can fulfill its duty.

June 7 - Even some Senate Democrats become anxious about their party's lack of a budget.

June 29 - Chairman Conrad tells Politico, "Senate Democrats have reached an agreement on a plan - just now - and we'll be putting that out sometime soon." (Note: the plan was never made public, but a leaked outline revealed that it contained as many as $2 in tax hikes for $1 in spending cuts.)

June 29 - Sessions renews call for the Senate to remain in town to deal with its budget and debt ceiling work.

July 1 - Sessions and Finance Committee Ranking Member Orrin Hatch ask the president to reveal, in detail, what his deficit reduction plans actually are. No response is received, and the president's February budget remains the only plan he has ever put on paper (thus the only plan that can be estimated by CBO) and shared with Congress or the American people.

July 8 - On the 800th day since Senate Democrats passed a budget, the unemployment rate rises to 9.2 percent (the third straight month above 9 percent).

July 19 - Amid continuing calls for the president to reveal what spending cuts he actually supports, Carney says that "leadership is not proposing a plan for the sake of having it voted up or down..."

July 22 - At a press conference discussing his position on negotiating a debt limit increase, President Obama declares, "The only bottom line that I have is that we have to extend this debt ceiling through the next election, into 2013."

August 2 - Following passage of the debt limit increase package in the Senate, President Obama calls for America to "live within our means" immediately before advocating a further increase in government spending, framed, as usual, as "investments."

August 3 - Government borrowing tops 100 percent of GDP as the U.S. accumulates $4 trillion in gross debt under President Obama, well above the 90-percent threshold identified by economists Rogoff and Reinhart as when debt harms economic growth and brings down job creation.

August 5 - S&P downgrades the U.S.' credit rating from AAA, the first time the nation has had less than the top rating since receiving it in 1917.

September 8 - Shortly after the passage of the debt limit deal and the spending cuts that went with it, President Obama announces a second stimulus bill that would cost $447 billion. CBO later admits that stimulus spending depresses long-term economic growth.

September 18 - President Obama unveils a deficit reduction plan that he claims will reduce deficits by $3 trillion through a combination of tax increases, war savings, and other spending cuts. But a Budget Committee analysis reveals that, thanks to a number of budget gimmicks, the plan would reduce deficits by only $1.4 trillion and would rely entirely on tax increases.

October 14 - 900 days pass since Senate Democrats last offered a budget plan.

November 7 - The Congressional Budget Office reports that total federal spending increased in Fiscal Year 2011 by $145 billion over the previous year's level.

November 9 - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi claims that Democrats didn't pass a budget when they controlled both chambers of Congress because "Republicans would have filibustered it," but as she should know, budget resolutions can't be filibustered.

November 11 - As the supercommittee continues its tense negotiations, President Obama departs for a nine-day trip to Bali, Indonesia, and Australia.

November 13 - Supercommittee member James Clyburn, the House Assistant Democratic Leader, says that a draft Democrat proposal has been outlined. A Budget Committee analysis estimates this outlined proposal to contain a dramatic tax increase-to-spending cut ratio of 4:1.

November 16 - On the 931st day since Senate Democrats offered a budget, the U.S. gross national debt tops $15 trillion.

November 18 - In search of common ground, Republican Sen. Pat Toomey puts forward a draft proposal with both spending cuts and tax revenue. Democrats summarily reject the offer.

November 21 - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg chides President Obama, saying that "It's the Chief Executive's job to bring people together & provide leadership. I don't see that happening [with the] #SuperCommittee"

November 22 - President Obama places multiple calls, over the course of the month, to European leaders regarding their countries' debt problems. Meanwhile, Jay Carney says it was "absolutely not" a problem for "him not to have been as involved" with the supercommittee negotiations.

What a record! If the voters understood how the Democratic Party has blocked every effort to bring fiscal sanity to Washington, would a single Democrat be returned to Washington next November?

Debate Notes

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 06:22 AM PST

(Steven Hayward)

I didn't get home from the GOP debate until late last night (there was an after party don't you know), and was too tired to post up my notes and impressions then.

It is quite a different experience to see one of these events up close and in person.  Based on tenure at AEI or something, I had a reserved seat in the second row-I felt like Bob Uecker-so I could see the action very close.  I could even make out Wolfie Blitzer's heavy pancake makeup. (Though I think Cain started something by calling him "Blitz"-the audience reacted with suppressed but prolonged giggling that may not have come over fully on TV.)  One thing you don't appreciate watching these on TV is what a pseudo-entertainment spectacle they are.  Before the program began, a producer-dude who obviously has or had a second career as a standup comic came out on stage with a warm up act ("You're the best looking audience we've had all day!") to give us instructions on how to follow his hand signals on when to applaud, and when to stop applauding.  Whatever.  But it really does make the serious business of debating issues with potential presidents seem more like a reality TV show: "Dancing with the Candidates."  May we have a C-SPAN debate with Brian Lamb someday please?

As to the substance of the issues, I concur with Michael Barone's observations, and largely agree with Joel Pollak's succinct scorecard over on BigPeace.com.  What you don't see on TV, however, are some of the fine points-the body language, the snorts and twitches of the candidates, and audience reaction-and especially how some of the minor and not-so-minor flubs are received by the live audience.  Some of the little slips the candidates make are much more apparent in the hall than on TV I think.

So when Ron Paul, the crazy uncle of the field, said in the opening exchange that criminal law had "worked well" with Timothy McVeigh, your could see Newt across the stage coil up like Alex Rodriguez seeing a slow hanging curveball coming toward the plate.  You could see this coming a mile away: "Timothy McVeigh succeeded.  He killed a lot of Americans."  Newt went on to make the obvious point (paraphrasing here): I don't want a law that says we get you after you've destroyed an American city.  We need a body of law that enables a president to stop it from happening.  Newt established his dominant position right out of the gate.

I could detect Ron Paul audibly snort when Rick Santorum, weighing in on this same thread, rather foolishly but approvingly said that Lincoln "ran over civil rights" during the Civil War.  Never mind instructing Santorum here: had I the chance, I would love to ask Ron Paul, "Why do you belong to the Party of Lincoln if you share the view that Lincoln was a Constitution-shredding president who is the primary author of big government in the US?"  (It's a commonly held view among the most extreme and simplistic libertarians.)

I agree with the commenter on John's thread from last night that Santorum's remark that we should profile all Muslims at airport security went down very badly with the audience.  You could sense people shifting uneasily in their seats with this overreach; I noticed a slight murmur, and also a lot of people glancing at one another as if to say, "Did he really just say that?"

Another minor flub that got a flinch was Rick Perry saying that "Afghanistan and India are working together" on Pakistan.  Um, I doubt many Indians would conceive the matter that way.  And the idea of free trade zone as a remedy for the region's instability seems a tad goofy, too.

On Syria, Herman Cain said one thing we ought to do is "stop buying oil from Syria."  I guess he thinks all Arab nations must have oil because they're Arab.  And then he managed to change the subject to economic growth at home.  I was sure we were about to get "nine-nine-nine," but Cain restrained himself.

About Romney what can you say?  I think he should trademark his Benevolent Gaze with which he beholds his competitors, always with the body at a half-turn, sometimes with a hand in one pocket.  He's one relaxed dude.  Though if I could write one of those "thought bubbles" over his head when he's giving his "Benevolent Gaze" I'd have him think: "Oh you nice person; I'm going to squash you like a bug in New Hampshire."

And now back to reading another 4,000 Climategate 2 emails for the rest of the day.

Today is a day for pausing to remember how blessed we are to be here in America the greatest country under the watchful eye of God. Think of your advantages; love your family and let this day renew your resolve to fight to keep the blessings our Founding Fathers gave us.

 Doug Book

Those who have spent the last decade or two listening to Rush know that he is adamant about presenting his audience with the true story of Thanksgiving.  "We ordaine that the day of our ships arrival at the place assigned for plantacon in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God,"  reads the 1619 Charter of Berkeley Hundred.  In school we were taught that the Pilgrims gave thanks to American Indians, but Thanksgiving is and has always been a day of giving thanks to God for leading ... Latest Harris and Mo. TEA party polls: Mitt, Rove and the media would rather you didn't see them

Nov 23, 2011 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

By Kevin "Coach" Collins

We've all heard about the latest Gallup poll showing Newt Gingrich slightly ahead of Willard Romney and both of them ahead of Herman Cain.  People like Tokyo Rove and the Republican establishment (which now includes all of the media since Fox has jumped in Romney's tank as well) do not want you anywhere near the latest Harris poll - it doesn't fit their narrative which says Herman Cain's campaign was mortally wounded by the false charges alleged by Gloria Axle-Red.

The Harris survey says otherwise. It says, to paraphrase Mark Twain, "The reports of the demise of Herman Cain's campaign are greatly exaggerated."

Herman Cain, the former Navy mathematician, leads the Harris Poll with 19% followed by Willard Romney the perpetual flip flopper at 16% and Newt Gingrich the former Freddie Mac lobbyist at 15%.

A review of the internal numbers carries some very nice news for Herman Cain.

It's Not ALL Their Fault!

Nov 23, 2011 05:13 am | Coach Collins

By Ron Reale

Are Americans going to remember all the Republicans that helped craft a debt-ceiling policy that purposely gave the Obama Administration and the progressive liberals the power to destroy our military?

When will we hold accountable all the liars and cowards on the right?

Why do we allow any politician to abrogate his or her responsibility to other individuals, or an unanswerable, at times unelected, "committee' or "commission?"

We elect representatives to do the job of making decisions. When these chicken s**t, power hungry jerks decide making the right decision might be tough, or even cost them (what they think is their lifetime appointment) their job, they run out and give their authority, which we bestowed upon them through virtue of our sacred vote, to a corrupt panel of highly paid insiders.

When the left wanted to decimate the military and close bases, they knew they would have trouble, so they turned to "base closing commissions",  ... Continue Reading:It's Not ALL Their Fault!

Bombshells continue to rock the Fast and Furious cover-up

Nov 22, 2011 01:13 pm | Coach Collins

 By Doug Book, staff writer

The case file concerning the Fast and Furious spawned murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry has disappeared from federal court records!

According to the Arizona Star,  all of the case information gathered by federal prosecutors is now unavailable,   "...apparently sealed by a federal judge."    "...Our office is handling the case and can't comment further..." said a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in San Diego

Prosecution of illegal alien Manuel Osorio-Arellanes for the December,  2010 Terry killing was originally to be handled by Phoenix U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke.  But it was Burke's office which meticulously directed the Arizona based portion of the Fast and Furious gunwalking operation for Attorney General Eric Holder,  advising Phoenix ATF Agent in Charge Bill Newell every step of the way in the  "loss"  of 2000 firearms across the Mexican border.   When Burke resigned in a fit of panic as a result of the continuing investigation of his ... Trump Threatens to Spend Millions on a Presidential Run

He's done it before, and he's doing it again.

Donald Trump arrives for Regis Philbin's farewell episode of "Live! with Regis and Kelly," in New York, Nov. 18, 2011. (AP Photo/Charles Sykes)

In his new book, "Time to Get Tough," Donald Trump lashes into President Barack Obama and threatens to run against him next year if the Republicans don't nominate a strong candidate.

Beating the drum even louder, Mr. Trump details his net worth-which he puts at $7 billion-and says he's prepared to pour a large chunk of his $270 million in liquid assets into a presidential bid. (Mr. Trump values the Trump brand alone at $3 billion.)

"He's prepared to finance an independent run for president if he's not satisfied with the Republican nominee," says the real estate mogul's right-hand man, Michael Cohen.

I'll Gladly Pay You Tuesday For a Tax Increase Today

Bored with the Penn State scandal because it didn't implicate any prominent Republicans, the mainstream media have suddenly become obsessed with Grover Norquist's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge." They are monomaniacally fixated on luring Republicans into raising taxes.

If Democrats could balance the budget tomorrow and quadruple government spending, they'd refuse the deal unless they could also make Republicans break their tax pledge. That is their single-minded goal.

But the media are trying to turn it around and say that it's Republicans who are crazy for refusing to consider raising taxes no matter how much they get in spending cuts.

At Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate on foreign policy, for example, CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked the candidates for the one-millionth time if they would agree to raise taxes in exchange for spending cuts 10 times larger than the tax hikes.

Terrorism can wait -- first, let me try to back you into a corner on raising taxes.

Amazingly, Blitzer cited Ronald Reagan's statement in his autobiography, "An American Life," that he would happily compromise with Democrats if he could get 75 or 80 percent of what he wanted -- implying that today's Republicans were nuttier than Reagan if they'd refuse a dollar in tax hikes for $10 in spending cuts.

Urge President Obama to Support Unemployed Pennsylvania Workers Over Illegal Aliens

Recently, various officials within the Obama Administration have announced a plan to suspend the deportation orders of 300,000 illegal aliens (many residing in Pennsylvania) that have already been issued by a U.S. court of law. In addition to being allowed to stay in the country, each of these 300,000 illegal aliens may also be eligible for work visas, allowing them to live and work legally in states like Pennsylvania, taking away employment opportunities from Pennsylvania residents who are unable to find a full-time job.

Once again, President Obama has put the desires of the pro-amnesty movement above the Pennsylvania citizens he has taken an oath to protect. Such a policy cannot be allowed to stand. More must be done to limit the presence of illegal aliens in Pennsylvania's workforce. Please don't delay. Send this critical message to President Obama today, urging him to do more to protect vulnerable Pennsylvania workers from illegal aliens. This is a completely free service. There is no cost to you.

PRESS TO SEND THIS NO-COST FAX

Dear President Obama,

I was outraged to learn you are offering an amnesty to illegal aliens through Executive Actions! If you have any respect for the American people, you will not follow through on this plan.

According to Cecilia Munoz, your Director of Intergovernmental Relations:

Authorities "will be applying common sense guidelines to make [deportation] decisions, like a person's ties and contributions to the community, their family relationships and military service record.... In the end, this means more immigration enforcement pressure where it counts the most, and less where it doesn't -- that's the smartest way to follow the law while we stay focused on working with the Congress to fix it."

How will keeping illegal aliens in the country, whatever the reason, help jobless Americans find work? Clearly it will not. Indeed, it will make the plight of unemployed Americans even worse and put even more Americans out of work. You need to get with the program and realize that Americans do not want an amnesty for illegal aliens!

Please start enforcing the law and make sure illegal aliens do not receive amnesties and are not allowed to take U.S. jobs. There are 22 million Americans unable to find a full-time job. Please do not let them down.

Sincerely,
(Your Name Will Appear Here)

DOJ Refuses to Fight Clear Racial Discrimination

Yesterday I posted at National Review a story about the racially discriminatory plebiscite election in Guam that excludes all whites from participation. Christian Adams also covered the same event at his Rule of Law blog at PJ Media. I reported that the Obama Justice Department declined to stop this patently illegal election procedure.

Any election practice which has the intent or result of racial discrimination is illegal. A law which limits participation in an election to "Native Inhabitants" on Guam has more than the statistical result of excluding people based on race, which alone is enough to violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

Christian Adams and the Center for Individual Rights sued Guam this week to stop the practice.

Amazingly, the advocates for the racial discrimination, particularly Guam Sen. Ben Pangelinan, the local version of George Wallace, actually thinks because Eric Holder didn't do anything to help the white victims on Guam, it helps defeat the lawsuit. He equates inaction by DOJ with the discrimination claims having no merit and has actually called on the U.S. Attorney to defend against the lawsuit.

Heritage Fix Health Care Policy

In Michigan, Obamacare is Already a Job-Killer

While the White House continues its rhetoric on job creation, the job-killing effects of Obamacare are already taking effect. One provision of the law, its tax on medical device manufacturers, is already having a detrimental impact on a Michigan-based manufacturer.

Stryker Corporation has announced that it will cut approximately 5 percent of its workforce by 2013 due to the tax. As Heritage has shown, this isn't the first device manufacturer to voice concerns about job loss in the U.S. resulting from the tax, and it is sure not to be the last.

Over 110 jobs will be cut in Kalamazoo alone, bad news for a state already facing over 11 percent unemployment. According to the firm:

The targeted reductions and other restructuring activities are being initiated to provide efficiencies and realign resources in advance of the new Medical Device Excise Tax scheduled to begin in 2013.

As Heritage policy analyst Kathryn Nix explains, the medical device industry "now faces major job losses due to the new Obamacare tax on medical devices. The tax is intended to raise $2.2 billion a year to help foot the bill for Obamacare." But despite the fact that the raised revenue will be a pittance compared to the price tag of new Obamacare spending, its impact on jobs in the medical device industry, and the cost of their products, will be very real.

A report released in September by Diana Furchtgott-Roth, former chief economist at the Department of Labor, illustrates the potential effects of the tax on firms like Stryker and the rest of the device manufacturing industry, which employed over 400,000 Americans in 2009:

The new 2.3% excise tax will roughly double the device industry's total tax bill and raise the average effective corporate income tax rate to one the highest effective tax rates faced by any industry in the world. Moreover, the new tax will be paid both by firms that have net income and those that do not. The tax will be especially harmful to companies that innovate and tend to suffer losses in the first years or when investing in research and development for a new product but would still be required to pay the tax.

The medical device tax is just one of many new taxes included in the new health care law. These taxes will hinder America's economic recovery and job growth. Read more on The Foundry >>

November 24, 2011  Happy Thanksgiving!      Give Thanks for Families by Helping Foster Children Find a Home

By Jennifer Marshall

Many of us will give thanks for family this week. Sadly, more than one hundred thousand children awaiting adoption from the foster care system don't have a family to be thankful for.

More than 400,000 children are in the foster care system, and about a quarter are in circumstances that will prevent them from being reunified with their family of origin. They need adoptive homes.

November is National Adoption Month, and this year's initiative aims to find permanent parents for these 107,000 foster children. That's a call advocates of limited government should take seriously. Without adoption, these children will reach adulthood without a family to call their own. That will put them at greater risk of economic distress, depending on welfare, having a child outside of marriage, and being convicted of a crime.

Time is not on the side of these children. In 2003, Dr. Wade Horn, then Assistant Secretary for Children and Families at the Department of Health and Human Services, testified that after reaching age nine in foster care, a waiting child is more likely to remain in the foster care system than to be adopted. The foster care system urgently needs reform, as Thomas Atwood, former president of the National Council for Adoption, wrote in a Heritage Backgrounder earlier this year.

But reforming policy won't be enough. These vulnerable children need families. Adopting a foster child is civil society in action, a beautiful picture of conservative principles at work.

Not everyone is in a position to foster or adopt, but we can all help those who assist foster children to find homes and support the families who take them in. This holiday season, spread the word about this good work. If you know a foster or adoptive family, thank them and ask how you can help.

Consider a donation to Wait No More or Harvest of Hope (described below) on behalf of the more than 100,000 foster children waiting for adoption.

Wait No More: Launched in 2008 by Focus on the Family to alert more Americans to the urgency of the need for adoption, Wait No More hosts events that gather government leaders, churches, private adoption agencies and prospective adoptive parents to provide information and opportunities to begin the adoption process on site. To date, 7,100 have attended Wait No More events, with 1,791 families initiating adoption of foster children. In Colorado, where the group is headquartered, the number of foster children waiting for adoption dropped from about 800 to 350, thanks to the efforts of Wait No More in conjunction with other ministries and agencies.

Harvest of Hope: Rev. Buster Soaries and his Somerset, NJ, congregation began their foster care work when they learned of a "boarder baby" crisis-newborns abandoned in hospitals-in their county and elsewhere in the state. The Harvest of Hope Program was created to find families for these infants. Since then, Harvest of Hope has recruited 385 foster families, placing a total of over 900 children in temporary foster care. Some 149 families have adopted 235 children. The ministry's efforts have expanded, with Harvest of Hope now leading a statewide network of churches from which foster parents are recruited and supported as they take in children.

Family Dinners Impact Teen Choices

Compared to teens who have two or fewer family dinners per week, those who have five or more are at least half as likely to have used tobacco, alcohol, or marijuana. They are also less likely to say they would try these substances in the future or that they have friends who use them. Find out how marriage, family, and religion help teens make good choices at FamilyFacts.org.

Morning Bell: A Day of 'Public Thanksgiving and Prayer'

Most of us have heard or read at least part of Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving proclamation at some point. But even those who have heard it many times can overlook two important aspects of this important document.

The first is its timing: October 3, 1863. The nation had already endured two years of appalling carnage on the battlefields of the Civil War. And although Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg seemed to mark a turning point in favor of the Union, there was no clear light at the end of the tunnel. In fact, much more blood would be shed in the months ahead.

And yet President Lincoln paused at this time of unimaginable crisis not only to urge Americans to give thanks, but to note how blessed our nation is. "The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies," the first sentence reads. He lists those blessings in terms so strong and soaring one could almost forget this was one of our nation's darkest hours.

Nearly 150 years later, this is a perspective check. If Lincoln could encourage his fellow Americans to give thanks at such a bleak time, how can any of us complain about our lot?

The GOP Debate over Protecting America

They came, they saw, and they debated. Last night in Washington, D.C.'s, Constitution Hall, eight Republican contenders for the presidency engaged in a debate on foreign policy and national security co-hosted by The Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, and CNN. When the dust had settled after the two-hour debate, Americans had a clearer picture of where each of the candidates stood on the seminal issue of how to best protect America.

Following the failure of the "super committee," Senate Democrats are seeking to take up legislation that would add more than $400 billion to the deficit.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has been in power since 1978, will step down following nearly a year of protests and a government crackdown that left hundreds dead and thousands injured.

Republican Members of Congress are trying to withhold $3.3 billion in federal grants from California's proposed $98.5 billion bullet train. The project has drawn increasing criticism for its spiraling costs.

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt, for a fifth day of protests, demanding that the country's top general step down.
