Fewer Americans Can Afford the Basics
The Blaze | by Becket Adams | Posted on October 19, 2011 at 6:21am
Among the large numbers of issues that are said to prove that the recession never ended is whether Americans can afford the "basics" that have come to be expected by the middle class.
Fewer and fewer Americans can.
This means that a lack of demand for some services, like medical treatment, will undermine the ability of some services to exist at all - at least at current levels. Medicine, like any other economically based system, needs some base amount of demand to provide the financial scale that allows research and development and a delivery infrastructure to exist.

The Kitchen Table Patriots
are proud to join with
The Philadelphia Loyal Opposition
and Eagle Forum in support of
Al Schmidt (Only) for City Commissioner on Nov. 8th!

October 2011
Dear Philadelphia Eagle,
You live in a spot where there will be an election this year on Tuesday, November 8 that could affect the national election next year in a big way. You will have the opportunity to vote in a special election that will have implications on every other office in the United States - from your local neighborhood to the White House.
This is the election for Philadelphia City Commissioner. Those are the officials who are in charge of running fair and honest elections in Philadelphia. You and I know that our candidates cannot win unless we have honest elections. For years, we've heard the same complaints about unfair elections, politicking inside the polls, voter intimidation, poll watchers denied access, and much more.
I urge you to vote for Al Schmidt for City Commissioner on Tuesday, November 8 because we know we can count on him to fight for fair and honest elections. Philadelphia has three Commissioners, but no more than two can belong to the same political party. That means two Democrats and one Republican will be elected.
I urge you to vote ONLY for Al Schmidt (Press #119) - even though your ballot instructions will probably say "vote for two." You are absolutely NOT required to "vote for two" - you have a right to vote for only one, and that is the only way to assure that Al Schmidt will be elected. Also, do NOT vote a straight Republican ticket because that will automatically cast your ballot for both Republican candidates, only one of whom can win. If you have any questions, call PA Eagle Forum President Ned Pfeifer, 412-973-0502.
Al Schmidt is eminently qualified to be a Philadelphia City Commissioner. He is a former Senior Analyst for the non-partisan U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) - the investigative arm of Congress. There, he conducted oversight of government agencies, programs, and policies to identify and eliminate waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement anywhere that federal taxpayer dollars are spent. After leaving GAO, Al ran for City Controller and earned a reputation as an outspoken advocate for good government.
Al Schmidt has the skills and commitment to clean up the City Commissioner's Office and give us honest elections in Philadelphia. This can be decisive in how Pennsylvania will go in the important 2012 elections, and maybe even how the U.S. will go.
I urge you to vote on Tuesday, November 8 for Al Schmidt for City Commissioner - and vote ONLY for Al Schmidt for City Commissioner. Press #119. This could be more important than any vote you cast next year.
Faithfully,
Phyllis Schlafly
P.S. Please tell ten of your friends to be sure to vote ONLY for Al Schmidt (Press #119) on Tuesday, November 8. This is a crucial election for Philadelphia, for Pennsylvania, and for America. |

Dear Patriot, Your participation is vital for this event. WE NEED 20-30 people to respond with a firm "yes" to picket Rep. Pileggi's office on 10/22/11 before we call the media. Press coverage is the best way to inform the public about the actions or inactions of our representatives. If there are only a handful of people, the press will either report nothing or will report the small number that turned out. The story will become one about lack of interest and lack of participation rather than lack of action by Senator Pileggi. We need to know who is willing to help us get this out to the public. Senator Pileggi, PA Senate Majority Leader, has not shown leadership and it is time we let him know! The Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the Governor's office in Harrisburg. The House is doing its job-Senator Pileggi is stalling many bills in the Senate that are good for the Commonwealth. Please call LISA ASAP at 484-995-1540 to let her know if you will or will not be participating. We would like to picket his district office (100 Evergreen Dr, Glen Mills) Saturday, October 22nd from 11:00-1:00pm. We hope to have the press there to get our message out in order to educate the public and hold him accountable. Attached is a flyer (SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE) that we will be handing out that day. We will also be distributing these at the Court Houses in Media and West Chester at different times. We would also like to have it handed out during the morning rush hour at train stations in Senator Pileggi's district--this has been very effective in the past. All signs should reflect what is in the flyer--keep it simple. We need to know who is willing to help us get this out to the public. Your response is very important! ****** Please call Lisa ASAP at 484-995-1540 to let her know if you will, or will not, be participating. I am reaching out to you in hopes of gaining your support. I have taken the liberty of attaching a PDF recounting a compelling story which I contributed to with the team at the Chester County Hero Fund (501c3).
For the last year, I have been training for the Marine Corps Marathon, which I will run on October the 30th (just shy of my 68th--birthday) in D.C.
I'm running to raise money to build an accessible home for Jay Raffetto a wounded Marine. Jay graduated from Conestoga H.S. with my daughter Jennifer in 2000. I always gave him positive encouragement through his parents about the virtues of military service. Jay became a medic with special operations (Force Recon, USMC) and unfortunately, last August he became a triple amputee-while on patrol in Afghanistan.
I'm asking for a donation to support his cause and I'm asking consideration for a Corporate Sponsorship as well---if possible. I think this is a compelling cause.
Please see attached PDF with instructions on the bottom of the sheet.
100% of your donation will go Jay and his wife Emily, Thanks in advance for your support of Jay, his family and our men and women in the Military.
Also please feel free to use this email and PDF to send to others you Feel might want to support this effort.
P.S. I know I can count on your help!

Welcome to Washington's Headquarters at the Moland House
1641 Old York Road, Hartsville, PA 18974
In the early evening of 10 August 1777, eleven thousand Continental and militia soldiers are marching up York Road towards the Cross Roads with Bristol Road [Hartsville, PA] on their way to Coryell's Ferry [New Hope, PA] to camp four miles across the Delaware River. General George Washington receives a dispatch from John Hancock, President of the Second Continental Congress, placing the 260-vessel British fleet, hauling 17,000 troops under General William Howe, fifty miles south of the Delaware Capes [May & Henelopen] on 7 August. Unsure and wary of Howe's intentions, Washington immediately halts his force to encamp around the bridge over the Little Neshaminy Creek in Warwick Township, Bucks County. Knowing the area and having ridden through only ten days earlier, he selects the substantial stone dwelling of Widow Moland as his Head Quarters on the farm north of the bridge.

Thursday, October 20th at 7:30PM: Kenneth C. Davis, "Why A President?" At the Philadelphia Convention, the nature of the Presidency was a subject of hot debate. What did the framers of the Constitution want the "chief magistrate" to be? What changes have been made to the Constitution that directly relate to Presidential powers and elections? What would the Framers think of the modern American Presidency? These are some of the questions that author Kenneth C. Davis will address. He is the author of the popular Don't Know Much About... book series as well as America's Hidden History: Untold Tales of the First Pilgrims, Fighting Women, and Forgotten Founders Who Shaped a Nation and A Nation Rising: Untold Tales of Flawed Founders, Fallen Heroes, and Forgotten Fighters from America's Hidden History.
Thursday, November 3rd at 7:30PM: John Fea, "Was American Founded as a Christian Nation? How Did the Founders Understand the Relationship Between Church and State?" John Fea, Associate Professor of American History at Messiah College and a David Library Fellow, will investigate the role of religion in shaping the Constitution. Professor Fea is the author of Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? and The Way of Improvement Leads Home: Philip Vickers Fithian and the Rural Enlightenment in Early America. Thursday, December 1st at 7:30PM: Paul Finkelman, "America's Covenant With Death: Slavery and the Founding." Paul Finkelman is the President William McKinley Distinguished Professor of Law and Public Policy, and Senior Fellow in the Government Law Center at Albany Law School. His lecture will explore the relationship of slavery to the American founding, and will examine how slavery was written into the original Constitution, and protected by it.
Thursday, December 8th at 7:30PM: George W. Boudreau, "'A Republic, If You Can Keep It': Benjamin Franklin and the Crafting of the Constitution." The series closes with a talk by an audience favorite, George W. Boudreau, Associate Professor of Humanities and History at the University of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. Professor Boudreau is Project Director of the "Teaching Franklin" website (http://harrisburg.psu.edu/teachingfranklin/). His lecture will explore Franklin's role in the creation of the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson: "Whensoever the general government assumes undelegated powers....a nullification of the act is the rightful remedy."
But what IS nullification? How does it happen and work? Since September 2010, the Tenth Amendment Center has been hosting a national tour to educate and activate people on this topic. People are learning the constitutional basis, when it's been used in history, and how it is happening around the country and how YOU can stop DC right in your own state.

Help Prevent Voter Fraud ! !
Judical Watch is Demanding Answers Earlier this month, Judicial Watch, a government/judicial watchdog group based out of Washington, DC, hosted a Voter Fraud panel discussion featuring John Fund, Christian Adams, and King Street/True the Vote leader Catherine Engelbrecht. Here's video from a portion of the event:
 | "The Voter Fraud Threat to Free and Fair Elections" - Part 2 |
But wait, there's more! The really exciting thing Judicial Watch is doing happened just last week when they filed a FOIA lawsuit against the DOJ to obtain records of communications between the Department of Justice and Project Vote Official/former ACORN attorney Estelle Rogers. You can read more about it here. Bottom line..."Judicial Watch is convinced that Project Vote's activities remain a threat to the integrity of our elections. The fact that Project Vote is bullying states to attack election security reforms in order to register Obama's 'Food Stamp Army' comes as no surprise. But it appears that the Obama Justice Department is using the same playbook as Project Vote - to the detriment of clean elections. The American people deserve to know if the nation's highest law enforcement agency has become nothing more than a political tool to help this scandalous ACORN-front group re-elect Barack Obama. Again, this Justice Department can't seem to be bothered to comply with basic open records FOIA law," stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
Be assured, we will be closely watching for any new developments in this case....but in the meantime, if you haven't already volunteered to help uphold free and fair elections by working at the polls WE NEED YOU! There is a critical shortage of polling place workers. We wonder why Project Vote and ACORN get away with their flagrant abuses of our system...it's because we as citizens are allowing it to happen. WE MUST ENGAGE IN THE PROCESS OF OUR ELECTIONS. One way you can engage is by volunteering to work as a poll watcher on Election Day. Please, it is going to take all of us to uphold the integrity of our elections in the days ahead. Get involved now.
We need TTV volunteers for poll watching - Free and fair elections do not happen without citizen involvement. Want to stand up and take action? True the Vote will provide training and support - you just need to take the first step. For more information email info@truethevote.org or go HERE to sign up now! |

It's time to sign up!
Earlier this year we announced a major event for this fall, "The Doctrine of Abrogation: Open the Koran Day."
We have scheduled this event for the weekend of October 28 - 30, 2011, which is close to the two year anniversary of the Ft. Hood jihadist massacre perpetrated by Major Nidal Hasan (pictured at right).

2012 Presidential Candidate Selector or Obama, His Allies & Critics Matching Quiz
Politicians have already indicated their 2012 presidential aspirations. This matching quiz includes President Obama, top members of his administration, Obama's most vocal critics (Boehner, Cantor, etc.) and likely White House prospects (Palin, Pawlenty, Jindal, etc.). You may select a position for every issue, or just select issues important to you. The political figures' positions are based upon their voting records, special interest group ratings and their statements in the public record. In cases where there is no known public record or statement, these politicos are not given a score on that issue. We add candidates, revise their views and include new issues as they become known or change. Check back often for updates.

Pre-Order Atlas Shrugged Now!
Earlier this year, I urged you to go to theaters to see Atlas Shrugged: Part One and share its message of limited government, free markets and individual liberty with family, friends and neighbors. Based on Ayn Rand's classic novel written in 1957, Atlas Shrugged: Part One was immediately celebrated as a "made for Tea Party film." The film is now finally set for its much-anticipated release on DVD. As a FreedomWorks member, you can pre-order a limited edition version of Atlas Shrugged: Part One featuring special bonus features from FreedomWorks. Pre-order It Now! Atlas Shrugged: Part One is set in a not-so-distant future in which government has taken control of businesses, bureaucrats have impose burdensome regulations on the economy and entrepreneurs are rapidly disappearing from society. Their disappearances are all linked to a man named John Galt, a mysterious figure who leaves this desperate world wondering: "Who is John Galt?" I know many of our members were disappointed that Atlas Shrugged: Part One, a film that had been attempted and scrapped numerous times since the novel debuted over 50 years ago, didn't play in a theater in their area. The release of this limited edition FreedomWorks version of Atlas Shrugged: Part One DVD is a great opportunity to own a part of film history. Get It Now. As I've said before, Atlas Shrugged: Part One has the opportunity to introduce millions more around the world to the philosophy of freedom. This DVD is a great gift for family and friends who care about the principles of limited government, free markets and individual liberty. Give A Gift. While activists have many reasons for getting involved in this grassroots movement-TARP, the stimulus, ObamaCare-I know that for me I wasn't initially motivated by a piece of legislation or a midterm election. My conversion happened many years ago when I picked up a dog-eared copy of the 1,000 page tome we know as Ayn Rand's masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged. That's the power of this book and this film. Pre-order It Now. In Liberty, Matt Kibbe President and CEO, FreedomWorks

One thing I am passionate about and want to pass along to my listeners is that there is nothing more important than knowing about the Constitution and how its underlying principles hold true at all times and in all places.
Did you know that Hillsdale College has been holding a series of lectures, "Introduction to the Constitution," delivered by college president Dr. Larry Arnn?
No? There is still time to sign up for this free, five-week series. |

Because I will be joining Dr. Arnn for a LIVE webcast event to conclude the "Introduction to the Constitution" series on October 20th from the Hillsdale campus. During the event, Dr. Arnn and I will discuss the main points of the series, including: |
What the framers of the Constitution understood about that document's relationship to the timeless principles in the Declaration of Independence.

Why the fundamental features of the Constitution are representation, separation of powers, and limited government.

Why the key to a republican form of government is the vibrancy, size and independence of private society. |
Plus, we will be answering your questions, which you can submit via email in advance of the event. |
This event will be held: |
October 20th 9:30pm EDT / 6:30pm PDT |
|
This is a live event!
If you can't watch at that time, it will be archived for later viewing. |

RedState Morning Briefing
For October 19, 2011
1. Nostalgia & Decline
Apple has out a new app in its App Store - Cards. You can take a picture on your phone, design a card, and have it sent via the post office to someone. Think about that for a minute. In an age of digital communications, text messages, emails, and cell phones, Apple has produced a product that harkens back to one of the earliest message transmission methods - snail mail as the kids these days are calling it.
Siri, the assistant on the iPhone, kindles fond memories of growing up in the age of Star Trek for the thirty somethings out there.
A friend of mine two nights ago showed me an awesome app he works on called Goba. It's available for the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, etc. It lets you plan an offline gathering of friends and manage sending texts and emails and the replies thereto. An app for the phone designed to facilitate a gathering of friends off line and unplugged.
My neighborhood is pretty new. Almost every house has a relic of an earlier time - a front porch. My wife, me, and our kids sit on the front porch in rocking chairs or the kids play on the porch. On sites like Etsy, people are getting back to early American crafts - typography, quilts, homemade soaps, arts, etc. Like with Apple's Cards program, people are trying to reconnect to a past that exists in our dreams. Part is real and part is not real. But we are trying to connect to it.
At this time, as so many perceive a decline in the country, there is a profound sense of nostalgia for a past era. Successful technologies from Apple or this Goba program or others are those technologies that actually help us realize, in some way, some part of that past. From getting a card in the mail to meeting friends on a front porch in the evening for a drink, Americans want to turn back to a simpler time or at least a time that they perceive to be simpler.
This is why the Republicans will lose next November to Barack Obama.
2. The CNN Debate: Where Has This Perry Been?
1. Where has this Rick Perry been? Finally, the guy showed up with unscripted, from the gut answers. The few scripted answers fell flat (see e.g. Jeffres). The rest were good. He's not the best debater. But he certainly did not lose that debate.
2. Rick Santorum is too angry to be President and came across as a jerk to everyone. Rick Santorum conveniently forgot to mention he got his butt kicked in Pennsylvania, was not a fiscal conservative, and endorsed Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey.
3. This debate hurts Mitt Romney more than anyone else. Why? Because the candidates started piling on him. A lot of polling seemed to indicate that voters were getting ready to settle. This pile on and the Newt-Santorum-Cain-Perry pile on of Romney "lying" will keep voters from settling for him. He got flustered tonight for the first time. Perry got under his skin. I don't know where so many enthusiastic Romney supporters came from, but though he was cheered on stage by the crowd, he was clearly flustered.
4. As the candidates were piling on Romney for Romneycare, Captain Stubing . . . er . . . Michele Bachmann . . . interjected and totally shut down that line of attack. Was she returning the favor for Mitt's lifeline at the last debate?
5. Herman Cain continues to shine as the great optimist. He stayed upbeat with a sense of humor. But this debate showed his serious weak point - foreign policy. He is going to have to seriously, seriously beef up by the next CNN debate, which will be a foreign policy debate.
6. Newt Gingrich, hands down, won the debate. He was confrontational, but polite. He was good on faith issues. He really hit every answer out of the park, though nuclear power is his and everyone else's ethanol.
I suspect Perry saved himself tonight. Gingrich will go up a bit, probably drawn from some Cain votes. Romney will stagnate. Santorum and Bachmann will go down. Paul will hold steady.
3. Herman Cain, Gilad Shalit, and Emptying GITMO in Exchange for One Captive Soldier
Herman Cain is taking a beating - at least judging by my email inbox - over a line he uttered in the interview below with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.
The synopses of this I'm seeing are some variation of "Cain said he'd release all Gitmo terrorists in exchange for one American P.O.W." and "Cain would release all gitmo detainees for one soldier." However, that's not what happened at all - and I don't share the outrage at this point that some of my very good friends and colleagues do over this statement. Here's why.
4. Meet #OWS 'Crisis Creator' Lisa Fithian: The Radical Extremist Helping To #OccupyAmerica
"When people ask me, 'What do you do?' I say I create crisis, because crisis is that edge where change is possible." - Lisa Fithian
To say that Lisa Fithian is just a paid-professional protester would be to undersell her radical accomplishments. True, she's received compensation from the SEIU and the SEIU's labor federation Change to Win as a consultant. However, her war on the free market goes well beyond that. Last year, Fithian helped the UAW shut down Bank of America branches and, now, is helping the #OccupyWallSt protesters wage their occupations all across America.

Amnesty International are lying sons-of-bitches
By Ted Belman
Amnesty International issued a press release today.
Israel-Hamas prisoner swap casts harsh light on detention practices of all sides
Gilad Shalit was held captive for five years by Palestinian armed groups
The prisoner exchange involving Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and 477 Palestinian prisoners highlights the need for the humane treatment of all detainees in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), Amnesty International said today.
Obviously it wants to show equivalence. God forbid it should criticize only Hamas. It was not a "prisoner exchange". It was an outrageous ransom paid for a hostage. It only mentions the 477 terrorists that were released calling them "prisoners rather than terrorists. What about the other 550? Then it lumps them all into "detainees" in the OPT which I surmise includes Gaza.
"This deal will bring relief to Gilad Shalit and his family after an ordeal that has lasted more than five years. Many Palestinian families will feel a similar sense of relief today when they are reunited with their relatives, many of whom have spent decades under harsh conditions in Israeli detention," said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Director.
While it describes what Shalit went through as an "ordeal", it describestheir detention under "harsh conditions". No mention of the conditions for Shalit. And no mention of a very basic difference, Shalit was a hostage, the Arabs were convicted murders. Surely the families would have different expectations given that difference.
"However, more needs to be done to protect the rights of thousands of others who remain in detention. The Israeli authorities, the Hamas de facto administration in Gaza, and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank must seize this opportunity to ensure respect for the rights of all prisoners and detainees in their custody."
They assert that rights must be protected without giving evidence of such need.
Gilad Shalit was captured by Palestinian armed groups from Gaza in a cross-border raid on 25 June 2006. Since then he has been allowed no contact with his family, who have campaigned relentlessly for his release. Nor was he allowed access to the International Committee of the Red Cross, despite repeated appeals by Amnesty International and other organizations, which made it impossible to verify the conditions of his captivity.
Shalit wasn't "captured", he was abducted. There is a difference. And don't forget that two of his comrades were murdered.
Amnesty International has repeatedly called on the Hamas authorities not to treat Gilad Shalit as a hostage and a bargaining chip, in violation of their obligations under international humanitarian law.
I don't believe that it tried very hard at all to get him properly treated. It certainly didn't make a big stink about it. I don't recall one incident where they made such demands.
It has also consistently raised concerns with the Israeli authorities about the prison conditions of Palestinian detainees, and the fact that Israel continues to imprison Palestinians from the OPT inside Israel, in violation of its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Why does it continue to call them detainees and not convicted murderers? It makes it sound like Israel is "imprisoning Palestinians" rather than Murderers and those that abet them. Besides it starts from the proposition that the Geneva Convention applies but Israel's position is that it doesn't.

The track conveys the existential dangers to Israel inherent in relying on signed agreements with surrounding Arab dictatorships. The timing of the song's release coincides with present Palestinian Arab attempts to use the UN to impose a solution. This process negates Israel's right to secure and mutually-negotiated borders.

The Shalit deal will release some of the worst murderers in Israeli history, including those responsible for the Dolphinarium disco bombing which killed over a dozen teenagers, the Sbarro pizza bombing which wiped out an entire family, the lynchers of two Israeli reservists and the Passover Massacre at the Park Hotel.
This is Israel's worst military defeat in its modern history and it is being celebrated with grins and cheers, not just in Gaza but in Tel Aviv.
What the deal really means is revolving door terrorism is back. Kill Israelis and you stay in prison only long enough for other terrorists to kidnap an Israeli and win their release. Those 25-year sentences mean nothing. A life sentence doesn't mean life, it means however many years it takes the Israeli government to give in to blackmail.
As over a thousand terrorists are freed, it is time to recognize that every Israeli institution has failed to deal with terrorism. Its court system...

A Mexican army official announced on Monday that soldiers successfully rescued 61 men who were being held prisoner by drug cartel members near the border with the US. None of the prisoners were hurt during the rescue operation, according to a Law Enforcement Examiner source.
The captives were discovered by the troops in a house guarded by three of the alleged kidnappers in the town of Piedras Negras in Coahuila state.
They said they had been abducted from various parts of Mexico and forced to work for organized crime.
Mexican drug cartels kidnap and exploit immigrants attempting to cross the U.S. border, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent told the Law Enforcement Examiner. The DEA source claims the kidnap victims are used as drug "mules" to transport narcotics, cocaine and marijuana under the watchful eyes of the gang members.
The Mexican troops claimed they discovered the captives during a counter-narcotics patrol. Besides the kidnap victims, reportedly six tons of marijuana were also discovered. The DEA source, on condition of anonymity claims the marijuana was earmarked for the United States.

Fellow patriots,
We're all familiar with the phrase, "Be careful what you wish for; you may get it." The world's Islamists, eager for the return of the Caliphate, are setting themselves up to learn these words of wisdom by hard experience.
Islamists seek to create a single Islamic government led by an ultimate religious authority known as the Caliph, who may or may not also be the Caliphate's top political leader. However, as anyone familiar with the history of the Catholic Church in Europe knows, there are three basic weaknesses to any political system that joins "church" and state:
- Religious institutions can and will abuse state power to stamp out theological dissent.
- Rulers will conceal political actions under a mask of religiosity.
- The people will understandably become confused and blame the state's religion for oppressive political actions, leading to schism, heresy, and/or apostasy.
Put these weaknesses together and you have an inherently unstable political system where the weaknesses amplify each other and create a vicious circle of destruction. In Europe, seemingly endless wars continued for centuries as the Catholic Church and European monarchs battled for primacy. This battlefield was further complicated as Protestant religious leaders and their monarchal patrons also entered the fray. This destructive chaos tore Europe apart until the first viable solution to these conflicts took form in the Peace (treaties) of Westphalia (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_of_Westphalia ). These treaties held prototypical concepts of freedom of religion, which developed further in the Dutch Republic ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Republic ) and was fully realized in the U.S. Constitution. Since then, the U.S. Constitution has had a remarkable influence on nations around the world, as those nations have attempted to transport the peace, freedom, and prosperity Americans enjoy to their own soil.
The key to the Constitution's success in preventing religious hostility from turning into war is its separation of Church and State. Sadly, the profoundness of this doctrine's wisdom can be difficult for other parts of the world to appreciate, particularly in the Islamic world.
As Europe has learned to adopt the practice of separating church and state, the Islamic world has, after the promising forays of Attaturk's Turkey and pan-Arabism, reversed course. Why did this happen? Because Muslims practice their religion by following Sharia (Islamic Law), which applies to Muslim and non-Muslim alike. Muslims realized that, by giving non-Muslims the power to influence law through democracy, they would undermine Islam at its core. Conversely, Europe adapted well to the notion of separating church and state because the history of Christianity was founded on a centuries-long period where it had no political power. Christianity had prospered without political power at its beginning, so a return to such a status did not represent an existential threat in and of itself.
While Europe continued to move toward state secularism and religious freedom, the Islamic world remained stuck in a transitional phase that could only be maintained by a secular Muslim dictatorship. These dictators were Muslim and modeled their nations' laws on Shariah, but also blunted many of Shariah's sharper edges as concessions to Western pressure, and also to put the non-Muslim minorities who were entirely dependent on their benevolence firmly in their back pockets. Christians, who fared relatively well under the authoritarian rule of Saddam Hussain and Mubarak, are now exposed to Islamist violence as never before, and Syrian Christians tremble at the thought of Assad's overthrow.
Iran was the first Islamic nation to overthrow this kind of secularized Muslim dictatorship and establish a carefully designed Islamic state that also incorporated modern concepts of democracy, complete with popular elections and a parliament. Unfortunately, the requirement that Iran retain its Shiite Islamic character and Shariah law eliminated most of the benefits of genuine democracy. In other words, a democracy without a separation of church and state is no democracy at all!
While Iran has a parliament and a President, all candidates for election must be approved by a Guardian Council whose members are chosen by the Supreme Leader, who is the highest religious authority in Iran. Therefore, Iran's elections are about as democratic as an American election where all candidates would be required to be members of the Communist party.
Iran has long been admired throughout the Islamic world as the only truly modern Islamic state, with its Supreme Leader acting as Caliph and its President acting as Sultan -- a superficially democratic update on the Ottoman Empire's division of powers. However, in doing so, it has revived the very conflicts that weakened the Ottoman Empire, as well as medieval Europe. We see the rigging of Iranian elections to produce outcomes desired by the Supreme Leader, causing popular revolt. In the eyes of the disenfranchised, their Supreme Leader has become a fraud. Any politician who disagrees strongly with the Supreme Leader's judgments can be cast from a position of favor to one of apostate in an instant; therefore the Supreme Leader is surrounded by yes-men.
Anyone with a sense of political history can tell that the role of Supreme Leader is practically designed for failure in the long-term. As people reject the Supreme Leader, they will also reject the religion the Supreme Leader heads.
We're beginning to see the effects of Iran's self-destructive political system in the form of self-sabotage. The U.S. is experiencing it in Iran's mixed messages about the release of the hikers and the amateurish plot to assassinate a Saudi Arabian Ambassador on American soil, which may have been designed to fail from the start. For all of Iran's bluster, it is actually quite fragile. Unfortunately, this would make a nuclear Iran MORE dangerous rather than less.
Read the article below, and get a sense of the self-destructive dynamics of Iran, which a revived Sunni caliphate would also experience. Actually, the Sunni dynamics would be even worse than Iran's because the first question a proto-Caliphate would have to answer is, "Which Sunni Islam would the Caliphate adopt?" The effort to resolve this question would likely set Wahhabis, Salafis, Turkish Islamists, and numerous other Sunni sects at each other's throats, because the only thing that unites them are (1) common enemies and (2) an unrealized -- and unrealizable -- dream.

Khamenei, Ahmadinejad Rift Deepens
Posted by Rick Moran on Oct 17th, 2011
The ongoing feud between Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei escalated on Sunday when Khamenei, in a speech to students, hinted at future changes in Iran's electoral laws that would allow parliament to choose the president. Such a move would emasculate the powers of the presidency since members of the parliament, or Majlis, are all vetted for office by the powerful Guardian Council, which is completely under the control of the Supreme Leader.
Khamenei's suggestion, couched in terms that suggested the change would occur sometime in the future, nevertheless was a challenge to Ahmadinejad's power and fed the growing rift between the two leaders.

Hillary Rodham Clinton tells Libyans: 'We're on your side'
By Joby Warrick, Updated: Tuesday, October 18, 2011
TRIPOLI, Libya - In a historic visit punctuated by celebratory gunfire and cries of "God is great," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton toured the Libyan capital Tuesday to pledge continued U.S. support for a transitional government still struggling to consolidate control over the war-ravaged country.
Clinton, the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Libya since the ouster of autocratic leader Moammar Gaddafi in August, offered Libyan leaders practical and financial help on a wide range of fronts, from rebuilding the economy to caring for the country's war wounded to rounding up thousands of antiaircraft missiles that have disappeared amid the chaos of recent fighting.
But she also warned of lingering dangers, including the risk of prolonged resistance by Gaddafi loyalists as well as the possibility that democracy could be usurped before it has time to take root.

As you may have noticed, there has been a flurry of media stories about the iraq withdrawal, as well as a fair amount of controversy about how many troops will be left behind. thus, we thought that this was a good time to get into the mix and add our voice of concern for those that might be left behind.
yesterday we sent out the following press release to a large number of media outlets.

PRESS RELEASE
Against the advice of his Generals, President Obama is advancing a proposal to leave 3000 Soldiers in Iraq following the withdrawal of our main combat forces from that country on December 31, 2011. Those of us who support our troops are very concerned about the safety of those 3000 Soldiers under the President's proposal.
The current news coverage of this story has focused primarily on the political
maneuverings between Washington and Baghdad. Missing from the coverage has been any explicit expression of concern for the safety of those soldiers that would be left behind.
The Band of Mothers and the Gathering of Eagles, two national troop support organizations, have launched a grassroots effort to assure that an explicit expression of concern for the safety of our troops is added to the current discussion and debates about our upcoming withdrawal from Iraq.
These two organizations penned an open letter of concern to President Obama, and they solicited signatories to the letter from a variety of patriot and veterans' organizations. That letter and its signatories are copied below.
They also created a website dedicated to the open letter. You can view the website at the link below. Links to the signatories to the letter are available at the website, as well as links to current media coverage of the letter.
http://the3000.wordpress.com/
Please consider using your media presence to add our voices of concern to the current debate on the fate of our 3000 troops in Iraq. You may publish our letter and the list of signatories in full.
Sincerely,
The Band of Mothers

Hamas-linked CAIR sent this out in its American Muslim News Briefs yesterday:
Sold-Out CAIR Banquet Raises $400K, Exceeding Fundraising Goal
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/16/11) -- Some 800 people turned out Saturday evening in Arlington, Va., for the annual fundraising banquet of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The sold-out event, which featured a keynote address by Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), exceeded its fundraising goal by bringing in more than $400,000 to support CAIR's civil rights and advocacy work. "We thank all those who -- despite a poor economy -- donated to support CAIR's important work to defend the civil, constitutional and religious rights of Americans of all faiths," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. "This strong demonstration of support clearly shows that the community understands the critical need for CAIR's work."
Note the hypocrisy. Hamas-linked CAIR routinely claims that Muslims are victimized and discriminated against in the United States. Yet they can get a useful idiot Congressman to speak at their banquet, and raise $400,000 there.

Radical Islam: A Problem World Leaders Must Confront
By Neil Snyder
Radical Islam is a growing problem throughout the world. In Europe, it's a burgeoning issue that politicians have been unwilling to address properly because of the influence of Muslims there, but it's a critical problem in the United States, too -- especially in our nation's prisons.
The mood in the U.S. is so anti-anti-Islam that politicians run for cover whenever Islam is raised as an issue. Not so with Representative Peter King (R-New York). He endured death threats and ridicule from liberals because he held hearings in the House of Representatives to investigate the Islamist threat we face as a nation. The people who castigated King because he took his job in the House seriously will be the first in line to raise a ruckus if/when a homegrown terrorist, maybe an ex-convict who is out on parole, attacks innocent men, women, and children in this country.
I'm reminded of a scene in the movie Ghost Writer. Pierce Brosnan plays a former British prime minister being charged with crimes against humanity in the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Geneva, Switzerland for trying to prevent terrorist attacks in Great Britain. Toward the end of the movie, Brosnan tells his ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) that if he had it to do all over again, he would have two lines for people boarding planes out of England. The first line would lead to planes carrying passengers whose terrorist affiliations and connections were not investigated. The second line would lead to planes carrying passengers who had been cleared. He says, in effect, "You know which planes the chronic complainers would board. Every one of them would choose a plane that we cleared."

US Involved in Covert Mideast War Games
Tuesday, 18 Oct 2011 PM
By Jim Meyers
The United States is reportedly launching major military maneuvers in the Middle East amid speculation that the Pentagon is preparing a response to Iran's alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Washington.
The U.S. on Monday deployed 41 C-5 transport planes to prepare for a war game in the region that will test America's ability to provide a rapid strategic airlift in response to a crisis, according to a report from an Israeli intelligence site, DEBKAfile.
The planes were expected to land in Israel and an Arab state packed with fighting units with full equipment, the report stated.
Warships with the Stennis battle group, including the John C. Stennis aircraft carrier, are in position to provide ground troops with combat support.
Paul Joseph Watson, editor and writer with the Prison Planet website, observes that whether the maneuvers "represent preparations for an actual military strike on Iran" remains to be seen.

Terrorists Receive Heroes' Welcome

We have written critically about Israel's decision to release more than 1,000 Palestinian criminals, many of them terrorist mass murderers, in order to procure the freedom of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit. As happy as one must be to see Mr. Shalit returned home after five years as a hostage, one equally must blanch at the extraordinary price that was paid. Today we witnessed the sickening spectacle of terrorists being cheered by throngs of Palestinians-not on the theory that they are innocent of the crimes of which they were convicted, but on the contrary, precisely because they proudly acknowledge the murders they have organized and committed. Is there any other society on Earth where this could happen?
Terror trial goes to jury

We have been following the terror trial involving the two Minnesota Somali women who were raising money for Al-Shabab in Rochester, Minnesota. The case against them was submitted to the jury late yesterday in federal district court in Minneapolis.
Reporter Allie Shah provides the customary Star Tribune perspective: if the Somali women are not acquitted, Somalis in Minnesota and elsewhere will think ill of us. They apparently aren't too concerned about issues of legal compliance, or about what the rest of us will think of them.
The ringleader and her codefendant stand accused of providing material support to a designated terrorist organization, Al-Shabab, an al Qaeda affiliate. The ringleader has a helluva defense. She wasn't supporting Al-Shabab or terrorism, she was supporting Islam! Any resemblance to the crimes charged is just a coincidence, or something.

We have written several times about Tim Groseclose's new book, Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind. That the press is biased toward the left is obvious, but Professor Groseclose is the first academic to use social science techniques to measure the extent of the bias and its influence on our culture. Our first post on Left Turn explained what the book is about and why it is so important. We have done several more posts on the book, including here, here, here, here and here. It is unquestionably one of the seminal works of 2011.
Professor Groseclose will be in Minneapolis tomorrow, October 19, for a program that is co-sponsored by the Center of the American Experiment, Power Line and Wyncrest Capital. You can read all about the event here. It will take place at the Hilton Minneapolis, 1001 Marquette Avenue South, from noon to 1:30. The good news is that it is not too late to sign up. The cost, happily, is modest. We will be there, as will our friend Kathy Kersten, who plays a significant role in Left Turn as a sort of laboratory experiment.

A bad deal

The government of Israel has entered into an agreement with Hamas to exchange 1,027 Arabs including 477 convicted terrorists for the abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Shalit is headed home today. That's great.
The exchange, however, seems to me revolting and misguided. Understandable, but mistaken. Supporters of Israel such as Jonathan Tobin, over at Commentary, and Elliott Abrams, over at the Weekly Standard, have rationalized the deal, but their arguments seem hollow and unpersuasive to me. If the Israeli public supports the deal, as it apparently does, the Israeli public is, in my opinion, mistaken. It is a bad deal.

When Barack Obama clinched the Democratic presidential nomination in June 2008, he marked it with - what else? - a speech. Speaking at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Obama asserted that his ascent would be seen (among other things) as "the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal[.]" He famously portrayed himself as a messianic figure who had come to redeem the time.
The St. Paul speech only made manifest what is implicit in much of Obama's presentation of himself. How could Obama have brought himself to utter such laughable pap? This is either one politician who takes himself way too seriously, or who holds his supporters in incredibly low esteem, or both.

Occupy Wall Street is Obama's Astroturf Revolution By Ben Johnson, The White House Watch

If Occupy Wall Street protesters did not exist, the media would have to invent them; in fact, some are alleging they did precisely that. BigGovernment.com has published a series of e-mails it purports to be exchanges between reporters such as MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan and Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi on one hand and Occupy Wall Street (OWS) organizers on the other. The e-mails show, for instance, Taibbi stating "millions" would pour into the streets if OWS would articulate its case and offer a set of demands leaning toward socialism. Another seems to indicate Ratigan helped revise an OWS statement before it was submitted to the media. However, the media involvement is but one aspect of Occupy Wall Street's unreality. The movement is largely a Democratic/far-Left/media/union creation whose design is to move the political spectrum far enough to the Left to make Barack Obama look like a centrist and mainstream his political agenda. As this author reported last year, OWS is the fruition of the goal set forth by the president's most radical (and, unfortunately, most intimate) friends and advisers to create a new...

Obama's Orwellian Hate By Dr. Marvin J. Folkertsma, FloydReports.com

The ink was barely dry on the asterisk in Jimmy Hoffa Jr.'s rant about taking out those "sons-of-b*tches"-referring to Tea Party members-when the vice president made his own contribution at a Labor Day rally. "This is a fight for the existence of organized labor," the veep shouted. "You are the only ones who can stop the barbarians at the gate!" And the diatribes have continued, with the establishment of a website designed to track unfair comments made by those who, in President Obama's words, want to "cripple" America. Congresswoman Maxine Waters' snippet about telling the Tea Party to "Go to H*ll!" (that pesky asterisk again) added a nice sentimental touch, and some Wall Street protesters are denouncing free enterprise with words snatched from Robespierre's rich vocabulary. This is pretty harsh stuff applied to a menagerie of mostly gentle souls whose views of constitutional government differ from those of President Obama & Company, but such perfervid comments take on a clearer meaning when viewed in a more appropriate context: George Orwell's 1984....

Forger Duplicates Obama's "Birth Certificate" By Jerome R. Corsi, WND.com
|
This is the first in a two-part series examining how researcher Ron Polland created a forged duplicate of the Obama long-form birth certificate released April 27 by the White House. This article details the methodology Polland used to deconstruct the White House document for the purpose of reconstructing his forged version. The second article will examine Polland's belief that the White House document was forged and his deductions about the alleged forger. Researcher Ron Polland, known for his forensic investigation of Barack Obama's short-form birth certificate, now has constructed from scratch a duplicate of the document released by the White House in April, seeking to validate his contention that it was created by a forger. "I created Obama's short-form birth certificate in 2008," Polland told WND.....

Hope and Shortchange By Fillmer Hevener, FloydReports.com

When President Obama was running for office, he promised "change;" in fact, this word encapsulated his campaign's theme. A majority of voters didn't bother to discover the kind of change Mr. Obama was touting, so they voted for him on "faith" that any change would be preferable to the leadership of Senator John McCain. Candidate Obama kept some promises, but did not keep others. For example, he promised that his reckless, brash borrowing and spending plan by the federal government would....

This weekend at Manhattan's Zuccotti Park, the scene of the Occupy Wall Street protests, Fox Business Network's Charles Payne got into an epic debate with a union leader Arthur Cheliotes, music mogul Russell Simmons, and Democrat Sally Kohn during Geraldo at Large.
Cheliotes first charged that success occurs in a society because of the infrastructure of that society and that Charles Payne's individual success had a lot to do with the fact that infrastructure was in place that allowed him to get to that level.

Most Recent "Hi Gang" Article
Posted on October 18th, 2011 Hi Gang: Successful advertising campaigns often resort to the use of slogans that are repeated as often as possible until they nearly become a mantra that is chanted as often as possible. My most recent commentary for the CAPS (Californians for Population Stabilization) website focuses on the use of deceptive language by those who seek to obfuscate the truth where immigration is concerned. Before tobacco products were banned from broadcast commercials one brand was known to be advertised by the often repeated phrase "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should!" I remember my high school English teacher taking exception with the grammar of that sentence, saying that the phrase should have been "Winston tastes good as a cigarette should." but not much thought was given to how good a smoke from a cigarette could taste! There is a reason why the advertising companies make lots of money, their clients understand that without a successful ad campaign, they would likely not be able to sell their products or services. Advertising also exists in government efforts to sway the attitudes of their masses of citizens. Dictatorships have been particularly dependent upon such campaigns that are accurately referred to as propaganda. The artful use of deceptive language and propaganda, however, is a tactic not limited to dictatorial regimes but is also used in democracies around the world including the United States. In the past I have noted the use of the term "Immigrant" instead of the accurate and law-based term, "Illegal Alien."

A Big Government reader, Andrew Kaczynski, noted that demonstrators squatting in Zuccotti Park have defaced a 9/11 memorial statue.
The sculpture, J. Seward Johnson's "Double Check," once sat at the feet of the World Trade Center and became a shrine of sorts after it withstood the destruction of the 9/11 attacks (photo at Pundit Press):
Activists at the Occupy Wall Street protests, either ignorant about the statue's history or indifferent to it (the Occupy instigators, after all, mourned the death of Osama bin Laden), have mocked the sculpture as a supposed symbol of capitalism.
Kaczynski provided several photographs, including one he snapped himself in Zuccotti Park this morning:

"'Occupy crowds are a conglomeration. At the higher, organizing levels are the true anarchists, socialists and communists. Farther down the heirarchy are those that have grown comfortable with knowingly sharing space with anarchists, socialists and communists. At the bottom are the clueless tools who are surrounded by anarchists, socialists and communists and have no idea they're being used. They all deserve contempt.'
Nobody puts it better than Mark Steyn:
'Beneath the allegedly young idealism are very cobwebbed assumptions about societal permanence. The agitators for "American Autumn" think that such demands are reasonable for no other reason than that they happen to have been born in America, and expectations that no other society in human history has ever expected are just part of their birthright. But a society can live on the accumulated capital of a glorious inheritance only for so long. And in that sense this bloodless, insipid revolution is just a somewhat smellier front for the sclerotic status quo.
Middle-class America is dying before our eyes: The job market is flatlined, the college fees soar ever upward, the property market is underwater, and Obamacare is already making medical provision both more expensive and more restrictive. That doesn't leave much else - although no doubt, as soon as they find something else, the statists will fix that, too. As more and more middle Americans are beginning to notice, they lead more precarious and vulnerable lives than did their blue-collar parents and grandparents without the benefit of college "education" and health "benefits." For poorer Americans, the prospects are even glummer, augmented by ever grimmer statistics on obesity, childhood diabetes, and much else. Potentially, this is not decline, but a swift devastating downward slide, far beyond what post-war Britain and Europe saw and closer to Peronist Argentina on a Roman scale??"

What IS Liberalism?
(WHAT ARE Liberals?)
Lets look at this slowly, closely. Lets examine it rationally in the context of America's Founding Fathers & Founding Documents.
Can one be thought a loyal patriot who regularly, daily speaks in contempt of America's Founding Fathers and the National Documents they wrote?
Can one be thought a patriot who teaches others to hate/condemn the Founders? our Founding Documents?
Can one work to undermine all that America's Founders and Founding Documents embrace and proclaim and be thought a loyal patriot?
Can one work to promote all that America's Founders and Founding Documents reject and denounce and actually be a loyal patriot?

Disaster 2012: Obama All Over Again?
|
|
Dear RedState Patriot, Of all the news you and I have shared together, this could be the most worrisome I've ever sent you: Barack Obama is still the hero of voters 18-34, who swept him into office overwhelmingly in 2008 - and are poised to do the same in 2012. You know I don't scare easily. But if we don't act together now, Obama will win in 2012 - by reaching younger voters where they live - online, with email, on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and cell phones. And that scares me. We can't afford a blowout like 2008 again. But it's in the cards... because we're still miles behind the Obama machine when it comes to reaching younger voters. (See more when you click below)

Obama's Jobs Machine
This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published October 17, 2011 in The Washington Times.
How does paying people not to work constitute a key element of a "jobs bill"? President Obama's goofy, gimmicky American Jobs Act, which even the Harry Reid-led Senate rejected Wednesday and the adult-led House regards with head-shaking bemusement, would throw another $447 billion "stimulus" at the economy and extend unemployment benefits for another year. Pass it now. Pass it now. It worked so well last time. The answer to the question above is that it makes perfect sense within Mr. Obama's worldview that government activity in itself "creates jobs." So when government as middleman shifts money from people who have jobs to those who don't, it reduces unemployment. Got that? Never mind that stubborn unemployment rate, which won't sink below 9.1 percent no matter how many Obama-inspired demonstrators occupy Wall Street.

The New Republican Vision for Modern Social Safety Nets
This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published October 13, 2011 on Forbes.com. A new consensus is emerging among Republicans for fundamental entitlement reform providing for modern, 21st century social safety nets. The new, reformed programs would actually achieve all of the social welfare goals of the current programs far more effectively, ultimately serving seniors and the poor far better. But because they would centrally rely on modern capital, labor and insurance markets, with a minimum of old fashioned tax and redistribution, they would achieve these goals at just a fraction of the costs of current programs. These modern markets utilize highly effective market incentives and competition to achieve the social welfare goals. In the process, the new, reformed programs would reinforce and promote economic growth rather than detract from it. These programs would also build on proven policies for booming economic growth, which is the foundation for ensuring that all basic needs are met. This new, emerging, Republican consensus clarifies the debate between the parties. The debate is now more clearly between two competing visions for social safety nets ensuring that essential needs for food, clothing, housing and health care are satisfied, and which vision is better both for those served by these programs, and the taxpayers. Note that even Hayek, the intellectual godfather of modern libertarians, supported the concept of basic social safety nets.

Cain's '9-9-9' Tax Reform Plan Is Unconstitutional
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published October 13, 2011 on The Washington Examiner website.
Herman Cain's signature 9-9-9 proposal has two problems. First, it's unconstitutional, and second, it's not conservative because it transforms Washington from the head of a federal republic into a centralized ruling authority. Cain proposes scrapping the current tax code, and replacing it with a 9 percent personal income tax, 9 percent corporate income tax, and 9 percent national sales tax. After an unspecified period of time, the income and corporate taxes would be dropped, and everyone would pay a 30 percent (not 23 percent, as some claim) sales tax. Cain is right that the federal tax system requires fundamental overhaul and he's not the first Republican presidential candidate to propose doing so. But the third part of this formula -- 9 percent sales tax -- would include taxing state and local governments, which spend many billions of dollars every year in purchases.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer Tune In Tonight Seven GOP candidates will debate tonight in Las Vegas, Nevada. We're just 77 days away from the Iowa caucuses, and strong showings in the remaining debates are more important than ever. Tune in to CNN at 8:00 PM ET. Time To Celebrate With all the bad news about the economy, you might have missed the "good news" this morning. Goldman Sachs posted a huge loss -- almost $430 million in the third quarter alone! Isn't that great? Did you see the dancing in the streets by the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) crowd after this news? David Axelrod will no doubt release a statement today applauding this destruction of capital. Obama can proudly take credit for punishing the bankers, for bringing down this part of the evil one percenters. I'm sure some in the OWS movement see this as a twofer: It's Goldman Sachs -- you know, "the Jews who control the international banking system." But even under Obama no profits means no taxes, and probably additional layoffs. But hey, that's just collateral damage in the cause of the greater good, right? Obviously, I'm being sarcastic. Unfortunately, the folks occupying Zuccotti Park think they are being serious. Be Careful What You Wish For Seriously, folks, you may think that it is silly to suggest that some in the Occupy Wall Street movement might celebrate Goldman Sachs' troubles, but it's not. With each passing day we are learning more about the thugs taking to the streets. And while Obama is increasingly embracing the movement as his ticket to reelection, more serious Democrats are becoming alarmed at what they are finding. Doug Schoen is one such Democrat. In an op-ed in today's Wall Street Journal, the former Clinton pollster warns Democrats not to embrace the Occupy Wall Street movement. Schoen sent one of the top researchers at his polling firm into the OWS crowd to interview 200 demonstrators. Here are some of his findings:
- 65% believe government should provide "health care, a college education, and a secure retirement-no matter the cost."
- "48% say they will vote to re-elect [Obama] in 2012, while at least a quarter won't vote."
- 31% "would support violence to advance their agenda."
Schoen writes, "What binds a large majority of the protesters together ... is a deep commitment to left-wing policies: opposition to free-market capitalism and support for radical redistribution of wealth..." He bluntly concludes, "President Obama and the Democratic leadership are making a critical error in embracing the Occupy Wall Street movement -- and it may cost them the 2012 election." Schoen's instincts are right, but we can't take anything for granted. Obama will have a huge war chest and the best campaign that money can buy. (More on that later.) But it speaks volumes about Obama's instincts that he is so eager to align himself with these radicals, and it tells you all you need to know about what a second Obama term would look like. America cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama! Americans Blame Obama Here's more proof that Obama and his liberal allies are making a mistake bashing Wall Street. According to the latest Gallup poll, 30% of Americans blame "big financial institutions" for the poor economy, but 64% blame "the federal government." Last time I checked, Barack Obama was in charge of the federal government. But rather than take responsibility for his failed policies, Obama is desperately resorting to class warfare and envy. Moreover, the latest CNN poll finds that 59% of Americans think Obama's policies will fail. Only 36% think Obama's ideas will work. This is bad news for Barack Obama and the Occupy Wall Street movement. Americans aren't buying their snake oil socialism! Rush Criticizes Cantor A few weeks ago, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor made headlines for referring to the Occupy Wall Street protestors as "mobs." Cantor was right then. But last weekend, Cantor seemed to recant. He told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, "We agree that there's too much income disparity in this country." That didn't sit well with Rush Limbaugh, who criticized Cantor for accepting the left's flawed premise. On his show yesterday, Limbaugh said:
"This is called 'snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.' ...So once again, the agenda is set by the left. They set a premise. We, instead of ignoring it or nuking it, accept it and then tinker with it. 'Yeah, well, we have a better idea. We have a better way of doing this, solving the whole notion of income inequality.'"
With all due respect to my friend Leader Cantor, Limbaugh has a point. The media misrepresent the Occupy Wall Street crowd as part of the mainstream. Thankfully honest Democrats like Doug Schoen are stepping forward to refute that lie. There is no excuse for conservative leaders in Congress to be cowering. They should be on the attack. Call out the Occupy Wall Street movement for what it is -- a radical anti-free enterprise, socialist movement that is infected with anti-Semitism. If Obama and Nancy Pelosi want to embrace it, fine. Shame on them for doing so. But do not concede an inch. The stakes are too great. Why Your Support Matters I'm not asking right now, but I want you to remember this item the next time I do ask for your financial support. In the past three months alone, Barack Obama raised $70 million for his 2012 campaign. What is he doing with all that money? According to the New York Times, Obama has already spent nearly $90 million on his reelection efforts. He has paid campaign workers in 38 states and 200 staffers at his reelection headquarters in Chicago. His campaign brags that in recent months it has opened "three new field offices every week." The candidate who raises the most money most often wins. I'm not suggesting that that is right; I am merely reporting a fact. And the reason is simple. More money means a candidate can run a better campaign. He can get his message out, define his opponent through negative or contrast ads and do the hard work of turning out targeted voters. A lot of things contributed to Obama's victory in 2008 -- the economy, unpopular wars, the chance to make history, etc. A lot of good people bought into the hype about hope and change. But money played an outsized role too. For example, a recent Politico article noted that Obama deployed a volunteer army of "about 20,000 strong working out of 50 offices..." My friends, that wasn't one office in every state of the country -- that was 50 offices just in the state of Colorado! Colorado had voted for the GOP candidate in eight of the previous nine presidential races. But it voted for Obama by nine points in 2008. That's the kind of a campaign that Obama's historic war chest enabled him to run. It allowed him to compete in and win reliably "Red" states like Colorado, Indiana, North Carolina and Virginia. Again, my friends, we cannot afford to take this race for granted. I know many of you are supporting your church, synagogue and other worthy causes. But for many liberals, government is their god, politics is their religion, and they are literally "tithing" to left-wing causes and candidates. I don't believe we need to match the left dollar-for-dollar. But I do know that we cannot afford to risk being outspent as badly as we were in 2008. And that is why your support for our work is so important!

Occupying children's minds: 'Radical children's literature' at Wall Street protests
By Matthew Boyle - The Daily Caller 10/17/2011
Emails posted online Monday from a private Occupy Wall Street mailing list show that protest leaders considered indoctrinating children with radical literature at Zucotti Park in New York City.
In response to protest organizer Kelley Wolcott's open request to "coordinate" a "family day," another mailing list member offered up socialist literature for use during the festivities.
"I have a story book called Tales for Little Rebels: A Collection of Radical Children's Literature, with stories ranging from Dr. Seuss to Bolshevik sponsored 'Fairy Tales for Worker's Children,'" Nicolas Moselle Allen wrote. "Let me know if you would like this!"

Dear Patriot,
Last Friday afternoon amidst the news of two House investigations into a breaking scandal involving a $535 million federal loan failed solar company Solyndra, and more than $4.7 billion for four additional loans for troubled solar companies, Grassfire Nation launched a national petition calling for a full investigation into what is becoming "Solar-gate." The early results of our petition were positively shocking! We had an abysmal response -- indicating that either American taxpayers don't care that billions of their tax dollars were simply wasted on failing solar companies, or they don't understand the issue and how Obama and his minions swindled taxpayers for their own gain. Because the truth about the solar scandal won't be found in the mainstream media that have all but gone silent regarding the story, we are hoping it is the latter ... + + Cronycapitalism: Alive and Well in the Obama Administration According to Michael Barone of National Review, President Obama paid a visit to Solyndra in May of 2010. There he touted the solar panel manufacturer saying companies like "Solyndra are leading the way toward a brighter, more prosperous future." Hailing the green-jobs loan-guarantee program, he added, "We can see the positive impact right here at Solyndra." But lurking just below this Public Relations stunt was serious trouble. Only months before, Price-WaterhouseCoopers performed an audit on Solyndra noting that the company had accumulated losses of "$558 million in its five years of existence." The audit concluded, with a warning and "substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern." And still the Obama administration rushed a $535 million loan through. A loan that should have never been made given due to the results of the audit only two months before ... Starting to smell scandal now? Here's what has already oozed to the surface ... -- Green Source is reporting that several of Obama's biggest fund-raisers had close ties to Solyndra, including billionaire George Kaiser, who worked on Obama's 2008 election, and was a major investor in the failed solar company. -- Steve Spinner who worked closely with Obama during his campaign, and took a top job at the Energy Department was chiefly responsible for pushing for the loan, while his wife worked for the law firm representing Solyndra. -- Spinner's wife's law firm Wilson Sonsini, collected $2.4 million in federal payments for legal work related to Solyndras federal loan. And just two weeks ago, on September 30, the Energy Department rushes through an additional $4.7 billion in "green energy loans" to four other companies on the very day the funding expires under the 2009 stimulus act -- this only three weeks after federal agents raided the closed offices of Solyndra (Sept. 8, 2011). Where is the grassroots outrage over being bilked for more than $5 billion? This latest assault on the American taxpayer by Obama compels a strong citizen response. Click here to sign our national petition calling for honesty and accountability in "Solar-gate": http://www.grassfire.com/172/petition.asp?Ref_ID=50064 Obama is breaking the backs of private business while funneling billions in taxpayer monies to fund his failed "green energy agenda." And while the American worker suffers, his liberal cronies are raking in tens of millions of your tax money! Demand accountability by signing our petition today: http://www.grassfire.com/172/petition.asp?Ref_ID=500064 As soon as we reach 50,000 citizen petitions, Grassfire Nation officials will hand-deliver the petitions to the House subcommittees as well as other key officials! After signing, forward this message directly to 30-40 friends and family members urging them to join the growing chorus of citizen outrage by clicking below and signing our petition: http://www.grassfire.com/172/petition.asp?Ref_ID=500064 This is a moment that demands a strong response. The Business of Government
Government is a business like any other. It is the company that through the contract of the Constitution or the local contracts that cover the operations of states, municipalities and communities carries out certain functions on our behalf. Officially government is a non-profit, and like most non-profits this status means there is no owner or group of shareholders that reaps an overall profit, but that its board and employees find working for it to be very profitable. And so like most non-profits, it is run for the benefit of its board and employees... and the friends and associates of the board. Not only don't its shareholders receive any profits from its operations, despite its vast resources, but they are also its customers and are billed annually at constantly increasing rates, even though the services they receive rarely equal the money they pay in. And the way the company is being run, it seems unlikely that they will even receive the pensions and health benefits they paid into. Due to repeated unilateral modifications of the interpretations of the terms of the original contract, the economic relationship between the company and its shareholders/customers was drastically altered in these ways. For example the shareholders/customers were not to be individually billed as a means of providing revenue to the company. However this was altered as the company rolled out new product offerings and insisted on individual billing at a percentage of income. There is no option for declining the product offerings and paying a lower percentage. While the business of government was originally the implementation and supervision of large scale projects such as national defense and roadworks, it expanded into the service industry through social welfare and came to absorb much of the functioning and management of the various smaller state and town companies. By centralizing billing through its own system, and then distributing that money to the smaller companies based on their influence, it created a monopoly that could not be challenged. Like a warehouse club, what customers were buying through the business of government was access to its suite of services. Failing to pay the fee was not an option. Since the products and services being offered were not directly tied to fee payers and since fee payment was mandatory, there was no incentive for the company to improve its offerings or to deliver them efficiently. What mattered was that the warehouse was very impressively large, not that most of the food was stale, the products poorly made and most of the money was being stolen along the way.

Wall Street's Gullible Occupiers
The protesters have been sold a bill of goods. Reckless government policies, not private greed, brought about the housing bubble and resulting financial crisis.
By PETER J. WALLISON
There is no mystery where the Occupy Wall Street movement came from: It is an offspring of the same false narrative about the causes of the financial crisis that exculpated the government and brought us the Dodd-Frank Act. According to this story, the financial crisis and ensuing deep recession was caused by a reckless private sector driven by greed and insufficiently regulated. It is no wonder that people who hear this tale repeated endlessly in the media turn on Wall Street to express their frustration with the current conditions in the economy.
Their anger should be directed at those who developed and supported the federal government's housing policies that were responsible for the financial crisis.

Dissent from the Majority Report of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission By Peter J. Wallison (January 26, 2011) The question I have been most frequently asked about the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (the "FCIC" or the "Commission") is why Congress bothered to authorize it at all. Without waiting for the Commission's insights into the causes of the financial crisis, Congress passed and President Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Act (DFA), far-reaching and highly consequential regulatory legislation. Congress and the President acted without seeking to understand the true causes of the wrenching events of 2008, perhaps following the precept of the President's chief of staff: "Never let a good crisis go to waste." Although the FCIC's work was not the full investigation to which the American people were entitled, it has served a useful purpose by focusing attention again on the financial crisis and whether--with some distance from it--we can draw a more accurate assessment than the media did with what is often called the "first draft of history." To avoid the next financial crisis, we must understand what caused the one from which we are now slowly emerging, and take action to avoid the same mistakes in the future. If there is doubt that these lessons are important, consider the ongoing efforts to amend the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 (CRA) Read more: |

Occupy Wall Street, how it will end and mortally wound the Democrats
Oct 18, 2011 06:13 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
All clever subversive plots start with a kernel of truth. The blackest of Black Ops always rests on something people can accept and relate to in order to get it up and running.
Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is no different. Of the tens of thousands of people who are camping out in the streets of our cities, some may have legitimate grievances.
Some actually have been screwed over unfairly and want the "system" to do something about it. Nevertheless, as blinded liberal true believers they don't understand they should be marching on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave because that is the actual wellspring of their misery.
Notwithstanding the small number of actually aggrieved participants in their midst, the majority of OWS "protester" need only look in a mirror to see who they should blame for their misery. They voted for Obama and every Democrat they saw now these and we are paying for their greed stupidity ... Continue Reading:Occupy Wall Street, how it will end and mortally wound the Democrats

"Am I all I Can Be in Spite of my Obsessions?" Oct 17, 2011 02:13 pm | Coach Collins By Gerald V. Todd, staff writer Power hungry manipulators, administrations, unions and professors are pushing useful idiots, planting the seeds of mass destruction. Screaming mobs do not make a great nation. Don't we know how wonderfully and beautifully we are made - free will, sex drives and all? We must not let our hearts and consciences be ripped out by obsession with the evils found in faith, finance, governance, science and enterprise. There's plenty of good to be found there. Any obsession can be overcome by full awareness of our gifts and talents and to pursue them. This helps offset any unwanted urge. Modern Relativism and job frustration are the fuel of despots.1 Corinthians 10:13 states: "No test has been sent you that does not come to all men. Besides, God keeps his promise. He will not let you be tested beyond your strength. Along with the test he will give you a way out so that ... Continue Reading:"Am I all I Can Be in Spite of my Obsessions?" comments | read more

Government Problem? Government Solution!
If there is one thing that big government likes to do, it's solve problems. So when Bank of America announced a new monthly $5 fee on customers who use their debit cards to make purchases, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin took to the Senate floor to solve it. Outraged by the fees, Senator Durbin condemned Bank of America and urged customers to "get the heck out of that bank. Find yourself a bank or credit union that won't gouge you for $5 a month and still will give you a debit card that you can use every single day." For all his outrage on the behalf of Bank of America customers, Senator Durbin isn't telling them the whole truth. He's the reason behind the debit card fee.
In July 2010, President Obama signed the Dodd-Frank bill to solve the problems that led to the financial crisis and thereby prevent another financial meltdown. Attached to that bill was the Durbin Amendment-yes, as in Senator Dick Durbin-that directs the Federal Reserve to regulate the fees that financial institutions may charge retailers to process debit card purchases. The amendment calls for such fees to be "reasonable" and "proportional" to the cost of processing debit card transactions. Following a lobbying frenzy, the Fed settled on a limit of 24 cents per transaction, much less than the customary fee. Rather than lose the estimated $6.6 billion per year as a result of the cap, banks transferred the fees from the merchants to the consumers in the form of debit card usage fees. Thus, the Durbin Amendment proved to be a great deal for the merchants who (thanks to some good lobbyists) no longer shoulder hefty bank fees-but it became a problem for consumers. President Obama, though, announced a solution to the problem the Durbin Amendment has wrought: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, the President explained that Bank of America's recent fee "is exactly why we need this Consumer Finance Protection Bureau. . . who's sole job it is to prevent this kind of stuff from happening." The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), another progeny of the Dodd-Frank statute, will exercise nearly unlimited power over how Americans manage their finances. The agency opened on July 21, 2011 and currently has the power to conduct investigations and enforce the rules transferred to the CFPB from other agencies. For instance, the CFPB has the power to regulate ATM services; supervise online retail shopping; and regulate the terms and conditions of credit cards, mortgages, leasing, franchising, and other financial services. The agency consists of six divisions to be headed by a single director, who awaits the Senate's confirmation. Once the director is confirmed, the CFPB will be able to create more rules and exert unparalleled regulatory powers over consumer financial products and services previously wielded by seven federal agencies. Ensconced within the Federal Reserve, outside the congressional appropriations process, and not subject to the president's oversight, the CFPB will be able to solve consumers' problems without interference from the political branches.
So, let's be clear on the logic here. Congress and the President created a law to solve a problem, which created a new problem that requires a new administrative agency to make more regulations to solve it. Is there any problem government cannot solve?

Morning Bell: Wall Street is the Wrong Place to Occupy
Mike Brownfield
October 18, 2011
A new USA Today/Gallup poll shows that when it comes to assigning blame for the country's economic woes, more Americans point the finger at Washington, not Wall Street. Yet for weeks, the so-called Occupy Wall Street protesters have camped out in the heart of America's financial district-and have raised their voices in cities across the country and around the world-decrying the capitalist system as the root of all evil.
On Sunday, these anti-capitalist protesters got a helping hand from none other than the President of the United States. Barack Obama was all too glad to lend support to the protests-which have at times been marked by shows of violence and lawlessness-saying during a speech dedicating the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial that King would have supported the movement. And yesterday, a White House official said that during his latest "jobs" bus tour, the President would be speaking to the "the interests of the 99 percent of Americans"-echoing the protesters' "99 percent" slogan.
It's all very ironic. President Obama's policies have helped create and prolong the economic conditions that are causing America's frustrations

Susan's Paul Ryan Medicare Pamphlet - please print this and give it to your contacts
SAVING MEDICARE
Since 1964, our nation's senior citizens have relied on Medicare to ensure access to healthcare. Now the program is going broke -- and it is going broke fast.
It began spending its reserves in 2008 when payouts exceeded dollars collected for the program. [cite]
Predictions for exhaustion of the reserve vary, with 2024 identified by the Social Security Administration in the Trustees 2011 report. [cite]
The Democrat response is to reduce the amount Medicare reimburses physicians for their services. [cite]
This will result in fewer participating physicians and the physicians continuing in the program seeing fewer Medicare patients.
Patients will wait longer and have fewer choices in seeing a doctor.
If this makes access to care sufficiently untenable, or if Medicare does not get on viable financial footing, it will be administered through ObamaCare[cite].
This would include cost controls by a 15-member board of bureaucrats deciding wich treatments, drugs, and surgeries patients can receive.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget, has a plan which saves Medicare with no disruption to today's seniors and reasonable changes for future retirees.
The Ryan Plan is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. The future of our seniors' healthcare is too important to be decided on misinformation. Here are the facts about Medicare and the Ryan Plan.
The Ryan Plan in a Nutshell
Those currently retired and those close to retirement (55 and over) will see no change from the existing Medicare system. Existing physician reimbursement flaws will be corrected to encourage physicians to continue participating in the system.[cite]
On retirement, those currently under 55 will be provided vouchers from the government to help pay for health insurance. Voucher amounts will be based in part on income, with wealthier individuals receiving less assistance. Risk pools [cite] will be created to ensure that insurance companies will provide coverage to seniors, despite their generally higher use of medical care.
The result is retirees will have a system that gives them options, similar to that which members of Congress use and which will include options similar to Medicare Advantage, the popular plan eliminated by Obamacare. [cite]
The Ryan Plan Incorporates These Important Points
It is important that we
Plan now for changes, to avoid chaos later
The medicare system is running out of money. Change is coming, one way or another.
Pretending we can continue as we are is not an option, it is a recipe for disaster. The longer we wait to make changes, the greater the disruption to current and future retires, the more abruptly the changes will have to be implemented, and the fewer options we will have.
By implementing the Ryan Plan now, we will
- maintain the existing system for current retirees and for individuals 55 and over
- provide a sustainable, quality system for future retirees.
It is important that we...
Preserve the existing system, unchanged, for current retirees and workers 55 and older
This bears repeating:
- Under the Ryan Plan, if you are retired, your Medicare coverage will not change.
- If you are over 55, Medicare as it exists today will be there for you when you retire.
- And the Ryan Plan provides for quality health insurance coverage upon retirement for those currently under 55.
It is important that we...
Maintain availability of insurance coverage for future retirees
Since individuals generally require more medical care as they age, it tends to be difficult for older individuals to find private health insurance that will cover them. That is one reason our existing Medicare system is considered so important for many. The Ryan Plan creates risk pools which encourage multiple insurance companies to offer health coverage to those of retirement age.
It is important that we...
Maintain affordability
Individuals have paid into the Medicare system with the promise that coverage will be there for them when they retire. Unfortunately, we are facing an economic crisis in this country and Medicare is a significant part of the problem. To save the system for everyone and to avert broader economic calamity, in the future wealthier Americans will have to bear a greater portion of their healthcare burden.
It is important that we...
Make it feasible for doctors to participate in Medicare
Currently in many areas of the country physicans are reimbursed for Medicare patients at a rate that does not cover their expenses. Recent changes put forth by the Democrats further reduce reimbursement. [cite] This is not sustainable for any business and as a result increasing numbers of physicians are discontinuing their participation in the Medcare program. Patients are finding that their physician is no longer a Medicare provider and when they look for another physician it is increasingly difficult for them to find a Medicare provider who is accepting new patients and can see them in a reasonable time. [cite]. The Ryan plan fixes the reimbursement problem, making it feasible for physicians to continue participating in Medicare.
It is important that we...
Keep medical decisions between patients and doctors, not remote government panels
The Ryan plan harnesses the free market and puts choice in the hands of the patient. Retirees will be able to pick the insurance plan that best meets their needs, applying government vouchers toward premium costs. Medical decisions would be made in consultation with their personal physician, based on the individual's situation and preferences.
