Founding Fathers

Quote:

"Citizens by birth or choice of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discriminations."

Video: Angry Obama Tells Black Group "Stop complainin'," Shut Up and Follow Me

Obama is on the stump before the group that most supports his agenda, the Congressional Black Caucus, and he's never looked angrier.

The president and the CBC have a friendly spat going, because members such as Maxine Waters believe Obama has not done enough for her constituents. (Their answer: steal more money from productive America.) Knowing he has only 13 more unconscionable unemployment reports left until the election, Obama sees his supporters leaving in droves and even stalwart partisans in the CBC keeping their distance. He has attempted to cement their support as only Obama would: by telling them to shut the Hell up.

Reaching for Martin Luther King Jr.'s eloquence, Obama told the CBC:

Take off your bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'. We are going to press on. We have work to do.

David Horowitz Freedom Center

David Horowitz  Luncheon & Book Signing

The Philadelphia Freedom Center is pleased to welcome our mentor and leader, David Horowitz to Philadelphia to speak about his new book, A Point in Time:The Search for Redemption in this Life & the Next.

David shocked the political left when he abandoned 1960s radicalism to become a conservative.  Founder and current  president of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, David is also founder and editor of FrontPage Magazine.  He also founded Students for Academic Freedom, Newsrealblog.com, Discoverthenetworks.com, and is the author of over 20  books.

A Point in Time:

The Search for Redemption in this Life & the Next

Part memoir and part philosophical reflection, A Point in Time focuses on man's inevitable search for meaning - and how for those without religious belief, that search often leads to a faith in historical progress, one that is bound to disappoint. Horowitz agrees with Arcus Aurelius, whose stoic philosophy provides a focal point for the book, "He who has seen present things has seen all, both everything that has taken place from all eternity and everything that will be for time without end..."

Horowitz remembers his father; a political radical who put his faith in just such a redemptive future. He examines this hope through the other great figure who organizes these reflections, the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky, whose writings foreshadowed the great tragedies of the social revolutions to come. Horowitz draws on eternal themes: the need we have to make sense out of the lives we have been given, our desire to repair the injustices we encounter, and the consequences of our mortality.

Interweaving episodes of his own life with the writings of the philosopher and the novelist, Horowitz explores how we provide meaning to an apparently senseless existence and the dire consequences that follow from seeking to redeem it by attempting to make a perfect world out of the imperfect one in which we find ourselves.

The Kitchen Table Patriots Present
A Free Meet & Greet with

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and

2012 Republican Candidate for President of the United States

Newt Gingrich

When: Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Where: The Loyal Order of Moose Lodge

Address: 127 East State Street, Doylestown, PA
Time: 2:00pm - 3:30pm

As part of our ongoing project of making candidates for various offices available for direct encounters, The Kitchen Table Patriots is proud to host a meet-and-greet with Speaker Newt Gingrich on Tuesday afternoon. Speaker Gingrich will be giving some prepared remarks and this will be followed by a question and answer period and an opportunity to interact with him directly in the intimate setting of The Moose Lodge.

September 27th is the 17th anniversary of the "Contract with America" that transformed American politics during the Clinton administration. On Thursday the 29th, Newt will be unveiling an outline of a new "Contract" in Iowa. We're sure he will be dropping some hints as to what will be in the new Contract.

This event is free, but naturally, if there are supporters of Newt, he will welcome donations to help him with his campaign.

The Kitchen Table Patriots, like most conservative Republican voters, has not endorsed Speaker Gingrich or any of the current candidates, but we are enthusiastic about having an opportunity to have him meet supporters and patriots from Bucks County and beyond.

For those who cannot make it, we will be streaming and recording the event on ourWKTP.TV UStream.TV channel.

What changes have been made to the Constitution that directly relate to Presidential powers and elections?  What would the Framers think of the modern American Presidency?  These are some of the questions that author Kenneth C. Davis will address.  He is the author of the popular Don't Know Much About... book series as well as America's Hidden History: Untold Tales of the First Pilgrims, Fighting Women, and Forgotten Founders Who Shaped a Nation and  A Nation Rising: Untold Tales of Flawed Founders, Fallen Heroes, and Forgotten Fighters from America's Hidden History.

How Did the Founders Understand the Relationship Between Church and State?"   John Fea, Associate Professor of American History at Messiah College and a David Library Fellow, will investigate the role of religion in shaping the Constitution. Thursday, December 8th at 7:30PM: George W. Boudreau, "'A Republic, If You Can Keep It': Benjamin Franklin and the Crafting of the Constitution."  The series closes with a talk by an audience favorite,   George W. Boudreau, Associate Professor of Humanities and History at the University of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg.  Professor Boudreau is Project Director of the "Teaching Franklin" website (http://harrisburg.psu.edu/teachingfranklin/).  His lecture will explore Franklin's role in the creation of the Constitution.

Property Tax Reform and the Cost of Education - An Outstanding Round Table Discussion

When:  Friday, October 14, 2011 at 6:00 PM

Where: Phoenixville Country Club, Phoenixville, PA 19460  (610) 933-3727

Food and beverage service is available.  New menu!

THE BIG PICTURE ON PROPERTY TAX REFORM AND THE COST OF EDUCATING OUR CHILDREN!!

Our round table of three outstanding speakers: Nathan Benfield, David Baldinger and Dr. Richard Brake

THE COST OF EDUCATION GOES UP, UP, UP AND OUR PROPERTY TAXES KEEP GOING UP, UP, UP!  WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CHANGE THIS?

No discussion on property tax reform is complete without talking about what it is costing to educate our children and whether or not they are getting the education they deserve, according to Nathan Benfield, Director of Policy Analysis for the Commonwealth Foundation.  Nate has researched and written on public policy issues including taxation, government spending, education reform and transportation funding. He has frequently provided testimony to Pennsylvania House and Senate committees on various issues including education.

David Baldinger a full-time volunteer for the Pennsylvania Coalition of Taxpayer Associations (PCTA) will be with us to explain the School Property Tax Elimination Plan that permanently eliminates all school district property taxes as well as eliminating local school district earned income taxes (EIT). PCTA says Statewide, current school district budgets increase, on average, at twice the rate of inflation! And, "no tax should have the power to leave you homeless". David started this work in 2004 and since has become one of PA's leading experts on the subject.

Dr. Richard Brake is the Director of Educational Programs at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI), a non-profit educational foundation with a mission to "Educate for Liberty"- by inspiring college students to discover and embrace principles that make America prosperous, moral, and free. Dr. Brake lives in Berwyn with his family and is currently an elective member of the TE school board. Dr. Brake has documented the failure of America's top universities to teach students the founding history, texts, and institutions of our constitutional republic. His commentary on this disturbing trend has appeared in media outlets nationwide.

Judical Watch is Demanding Answers  Earlier this month, Judicial Watch, a government/judicial watchdog group based out of Washington, DC, hosted a Voter Fraud panel discussion featuring John Fund, Christian Adams, and King Street/True the Vote leader Catherine Engelbrecht. Here's video from a portion of the event:

"The Voter Fraud Threat to Free and Fair Elections" - Part 2

But wait, there's more! The really exciting thing Judicial Watch is doing happened just last week when they filed a FOIA lawsuit against the DOJ to obtain records of communications between the Department of Justice and Project Vote Official/former ACORN attorney Estelle Rogers. You can read more about it here. Bottom line..."Judicial Watch is convinced that Project Vote's activities remain a threat to the integrity of our elections. The fact that Project Vote is bullying states to attack election security reforms in order to register Obama's 'Food Stamp Army' comes as no surprise. But it appears that the Obama Justice Department is using the same playbook as Project Vote - to the detriment of clean elections. The American people deserve to know if the nation's highest law enforcement agency has become nothing more than a political tool to help this scandalous ACORN-front group re-elect Barack Obama. Again, this Justice Department can't seem to be bothered to comply with basic open records FOIA law," stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

Be assured, we will be closely watching for any new developments in this case....but in the meantime, if you haven't already volunteered to help uphold free and fair elections by working at the polls WE NEED YOU! There is a critical shortage of polling place workers. We wonder why Project Vote and ACORN get away with their flagrant abuses of our system...it's because we as citizens are allowing it to happen. WE MUST ENGAGE IN THE PROCESS OF OUR ELECTIONS. One way you can engage is by volunteering to work as a poll watcher on Election Day. Please, it is going to take all of us to uphold the integrity of our elections in the days ahead. Get involved now.

True the Vote

We need TTV volunteers for poll watching - Free and fair elections do not happen without citizen involvement. Want to stand up and take action?   True the Vote will provide training and support - you just need to take the first step.  For more information email  info@truethevote.org or go  HERE  to sign up now!

Agenda 21 In One Easy Lesson

Awareness of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development is racing across the nation as citizens in community after community are learning what their city planners are actually up to. As awareness grows, I am receiving more and more calls for tools to help activists fight back. Many complain that elected officials just won't read detailed reports or watch long videos. "Can you give us something that is quick, and easy to read that we can hand out," I'm asked.

So here it is. A one page, quick description of Agenda 21 that fits on one page. I've also included for the back side of your hand out a list of quotes for the perpetrators of Agenda 21 that should back up my brief descriptions.

A word of caution, use this as a starter kit, but do not allow it to be your only knowledge of this very complex subject. To kill it you have to know the facts. Research, know your details; discover the NGO players in your community; identify who is victimized by the policies and recruit them to your fight; and then kill Agenda 21. That's how it must be done. The information below is only your first step. Happy hunting.

What is Sustainable Development?

 2012 Presidential Candidate Selector
or Obama, His Allies & Critics Matching Quiz

Politicians have already indicated their 2012 presidential aspirations. This matching quiz includes President Obama, top members of his administration, Obama's most vocal critics (Boehner, Cantor, etc.) and likely White House prospects (Palin, Pawlenty, Jindal, etc.). You may select a position for every issue, or just select issues important to you. The political figures' positions are based upon their voting records, special interest group ratings and their statements in the public record. In cases where there is no known public record or statement, these politicos are not given a score on that issue. We add candidates, revise their views and include new issues as they become known or change. Check back often for updates.

Pre-Order Atlas Shrugged Now!

Earlier this year, I urged you to go to theaters to see Atlas Shrugged: Part One and share its message of limited government, free markets and individual liberty with family, friends and neighbors. Based on Ayn Rand's classic novel written in 1957, Atlas Shrugged: Part One was immediately celebrated as a "made for Tea Party film."

The film is now finally set for its much-anticipated release on DVD. As a FreedomWorks member, you can pre-order a limited edition version of Atlas Shrugged: Part One featuring special bonus features from FreedomWorks. Pre-order It Now!

Atlas Shrugged: Part One is set in a not-so-distant future in which government has taken control of businesses, bureaucrats have impose burdensome regulations on the economy and entrepreneurs are rapidly disappearing from society. Their disappearances are all linked to a man named John Galt, a mysterious figure who leaves this desperate world wondering: "Who is John Galt?"

I know many of our members were disappointed that Atlas Shrugged: Part One, a film that had been attempted and scrapped numerous times since the novel debuted over 50 years ago, didn't play in a theater in their area. The release of this limited edition FreedomWorks version of Atlas Shrugged: Part One DVD is a great opportunity to own a part of film history. Get It Now.

As I've said before, Atlas Shrugged: Part One has the opportunity to introduce millions more around the world to the philosophy of freedom. This DVD is a great gift for family and friends who care about the principles of limited government, free markets and individual liberty. Give A Gift.

While activists have many reasons for getting involved in this grassroots movement-TARP, the stimulus, ObamaCare-I know that for me I wasn't initially motivated by a piece of legislation or a midterm election. My conversion happened many years ago when I picked up a dog-eared copy of the 1,000 page tome we know as Ayn Rand's masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged.

That's the power of this book and this film. Pre-order It Now.

In Liberty,

Matt Kibbe
President and CEO, FreedomWorks

RedState

RedState Morning Briefing

For September 26, 2011

1. Herman Cain wins Florida straw poll.

By a significant amount:

"[Herman] Cain, the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza who charmed the three-day Republican conference's delegates, took 37.1 percent of the vote, with Texas Gov. Rick Perry second with 15.4 percent.

"The rest of the results: Mitt Romney, 14 percent; Rick Santorum, 10. 9 percent; Ron Paul, 10.4 percent; Newt Gingrich, 8.4 percent; Jon Huntsman, 2.3 percent; and Michele Bachmann 1.5 percent."

The very quick take: excellent news for Cain, who generally shone in Thursday's debate. Bad news for Perry, as he was actively trying to win this race (and did not shine in Thursday's debate). Romney's people are currently telling themselves and the media that it is not equally bad news for Romney, as he didn't try to win this poll; which is true, but it's bad news for Romney nonetheless. As Karl over at Hot Air notes, from Mitt's point of view the race comes down to Romney vs. Non-Romney... and from what I'm seeing, the GOP base is more or less in agreement that they'd like not-Romney, thanks. For everybody else... this poll taunts Santorum, embarrasses Paul, and the rest should just go home. As should Santorum and Paul, frankly.

2. Jonathan Bryant calls George Rodriguez a Nazi.

Jonathan Bryant is a teacher for the San Antonio Edgewood Independent School District; George Rodriguez is the president of the San Antonio Tea Party. The video is in the post.

The teacher, by the way, will not be be subject for discipline by his school district for calling Rodriguez a Nazi; there's not even an indication that Jonathan Bryant was required, or will be required, to apologize for his language. Well, you know how it is with liberal academics. They've long discovered that they can say whatever they like to conservative minorities (or perceived conservative minorities), and nobody on their side will say boo.

3. Hold the Line Against Venture Eco-Socialism in the CR

No wonder Democrats casually disregard our budget crisis. They have a penchant to drop zeros from government expenditures! Last month, Democrat congressional candidate Dave Weprin thought that the national debt stood at $4.0 trillion. Now Harry Reid has filed cloture on his version of the FY 2012 CR that has a missing zero from some of the disaster aid expenditures. According to CQ Politics, Reid's bill, which contains $3.65 billion in emergency disaster aid - with no offsetting spending - misallocated funding for the Disaster Relief Fund at "$774,000,00," and "$226,000,00" for the Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and coastal emergencies. These guys have a serious problem with arithmetic.

Senate Republicans must use this error as an opportunity to defeat Reid's bill, while the House must stand firm on their version of the CR, which contains $1.5 billion in offsets. House leaders have already compromised on the overall discretionary budget authority in this bill; a $24 billion increase from the universally venerated Ryan budget. The only saving grace of this bill from a conservative perspective is that it eliminates a $1.5 billion DOE loan program for manufacturers of $100,000 electric cars and the $100 million solar energy loan grant that was responsible for Solar-gate.

4. Is the Machinists' "Smoking Gun" Merely A Smoke Screen To Cover Its Own Actions?

Sometimes it is difficult to see the forest through the trees. Such seems to be the case of the media's reporting on the matter of the union appointees at President Obama's National Labor Relations Board and their prosecution of Boeing. This latest example of the media being blinded is the alleged 'smoking gun' that was reported on Friday. However, if the media were to actually look at the timeline in the Boeing drama against the 'smoking gun,' it appears they're being duped by just another well-orchestrated smoke screen to cover the Machinists own potentially unlawful retaliatory actions against the Boeing employees in South Carolina.

Start a rumor:

President Obama is indeed a Manchurian Candidate-but not in the way you might think. In June 1999, a shadowy cabal of right-wing business interests found themselves feeling so utterly nauseated by the Clinton regime that they devised a plan to ensure that by 2012, no Democrat candidate would ever be elected president again. First they needed a Manchurian Candidate: someone so hatefully leftwing and disgracefully incompetent that he would bring the American economy to its knees, while rendering it an international laughing stock. In this way "liberal values" would be tarnished forever in the eyes of American voters. So far, the plan is working brilliantly.

Ask:

"If God really cares about cruelty to animals, how come he made foie gras taste so delicious?"

Demand stridently that imperialist Western forces of occupation be withdrawn immediately from all the world's trouble spots and replaced at once by UN "blue helmet" peacekeepers.

Say: "After what those blue helmets achieved preventing those 8,000 Serbs being massacred at Srebrenica and the million Hutus and Tutsis being slaughtered in Rwanda, just imagine what wonders they could work in Afghanistan and Iraq!"

So far, the vote is about 2 to 1 in favor - but with only 700 votes - so yours will make a big difference!!

Angry federal judge rips 'false testimony' of federal scientists
By:Ron Arnold | 09/22/11 8:05 PM

A tough federal judge in Sacramento has become a folk hero of Central California citizens for protecting people and endangered species instead of putting the interests of either over the other.

In the process, U.S. District Judge Oliver Wanger made two huge splashes last week in what began as a water-supply war a decade ago, then grew into a convoluted endangered-fish war.

Today, it's a gigantic good science versus bad science war pitting California residents against a tiny fish and government officials diverting two years' worth of water for a large city or agricultural region and flushing it into the San Francisco Bay.

The article below clearly indicates the politicizing process of our religious institutions by the Obama administration. The "Separation of Church and State" that is the battle cry of the Left is tossed in the trash can when the president, who is labled by his supporters as a constitutional scholar, feels it's appropriate to do so. The Ground Zero mosque issue: no problem with getting involved with that. Prayer on the football field, fuggetaboutit. So, this year again, Obama calls on his Radical Rabbis group to come to his assistance to change the character of this country. Where is the list of rabbis who were contacted? I'd like it published with the synagogues or organizations they represent. I'd like to know how this list was put together. Don't these religious leaders have a responsibility to their constituents, congregations and communities to stand up and admit they were called upon to perform POLITICAL rather than religious duties? To whom do they owe allegiance: to their congregations who pay their salaries or to the president and the Party?

CALL YOUR RABBI AND ASK DIRECTLY:

" WERE YOU ON A PHONE CALL WITH OBAMA, AND WHAT TOPICS WERE DISCUSSED? DID HE PRESS YOU TO AGREE WITH HIS HARSH POSITION ON ISRAEL? DID HE ASK YOU TO PERSUADE YOUR CONGREGATIONS TO SUPPORT HIS POSITIONS? WILL YOU DO SO?"

The Wall Street Journal
SEPTEMBER 23, 2011

The White House's Advice for Your Rabbi

President presses: Preach politics from the pulpit.

The Jewish High Holidays are upon us, so naturally it's time for the White House to feed political talking points to rabbis.

As has become its annual practice, the Obama administration on Thursday convened a conference call with several hundred rabbis and Jewish leaders. According to a participant on the call, President Obama promoted his jobs bill-noting that those who have been more blessed should pay their fair share-and briefed the rabbis on U.S. efforts to counter the push for a declaration of Palestinian statehood at the United Nations.

I was on another such call recently, the purpose of which-according to the Jewish rabbinical group that invited me-was to help listeners "understand the current state of the economy; learn about the impact of the proposed budget cuts on the poor and disenfranchised; consider the consequences of the increasing gap between the rich and poor in America; and, glean homiletic and textual background to help prepare their High Holiday sermons on this timely topic."

The agenda of the call organizers was clear. Two speakers, one of whom was a (non-Jewish) Democratic senator, spoke of our country's need for "raising revenue," the new code phrase for tax increases. When I suggested that we separate politics from spirituality, a third participant pushed back, saying "the Torah is a political document." A curious assertion in a crowd that would quickly denounce any invocation of the Bible in political discussions.

Bush gave bunker-buster bombs before Obama did

NYT: Israel got first GBU-28 bunker busters in 2006 *UPDATE*
J.E. Dyer, HOT AIR

It's hard to figure out what Eli Lake is talking about in his "scoop" today for the Daily Beast (and Newsweek).  (H/t:  Ed Morrissey.)  Lake writes the following:

The Israelis first requested the bunker busters in 2005, only to be rebuffed by the Bush administration. At the time, the Pentagon had frozen almost all U.S.-Israeli joint defense projects out of concern that Israel was transferring advanced military technology to China.

In 2007, Bush informed Ehud Olmert, then prime minister, that he would order the bunker busters for delivery in 2009 or 2010. The Israelis wanted them in 2007. Obama finally released the weapons in 2009, according to officials familiar with the still-secret decision.

This passage is virtually verbatim from a Jerusalem Post report from September 2010, which cited (but did not directly quote) Newsweek:

Israel first put in a request for the bunker busters in 2005, but...

The Soros Plot to Topple Netanyahu

Not only does Soros want to bring down the Netanyahu government in order to install the Left in power, he wants to destroy Israel. Soros is behind Durban I, II, III and the Goldstone Report. He does it all with NGO's that he backs or creates. He funds the NIF, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, among others and he does it in partnership with the Ford Foundation. He is also behind J-Street and Pres Obama. I will be posting an article to this effect in a day or two. And the big surprise is that Soros doing this all as an agent for guess what government. Ted Belman

By Daniel Greenfield, FrontPageMag

In late February, the Israeli Knesset passed the NGO Funding Transparency Bill by 40 to 34. It had been a long journey for the bill, which despite, its neutered, state was still a declaration of war by the conservative Likud Party against the shadow NGO empire that was the Soros way.

While the bill was no longer able to empower the lifting of tax exempt status for foreign...

Looking a gift horse in the mouth

By Ted Belman

Leading Jews are out shilling for Obama again. They are sure to mention the unprecedented security cooperation that now exists between the US and Israel, even more so than under Bush. In fact the latest revelation was the sale to Israel of much sought after bunker-bombs denied to Israel by Bush.

Jonathan Tobin discusses the bunker-bombs in Commentary.

A few months ago when they were enlisted to do this, I wrote that the US exacted a price for such cooperation namely that Israel had to agree to refrain from attacking Iran. But that is not sufficient a come back.

I am reading a book by Robert E Kaplan (not yet published) entitled The Soros Connection, in which he draws attention to "gifting" as the primary means of influencing individuals and even countries..

He writes "Robert Cialdini, a social psychologist, describes "gifting" in his book Influence: Science and Practice, using the term "reciprocation"for what I have called "gifting".

Obama extorts a high price for the veto and the speech

By Ted Belman

On Monday, Jeff Daube, Director of Israel Affairs for ZOA, approached me and told me about an LA Jewish Journal article about the gun Obama reputedly put to Netanyahu's head.

Knesset visitor blasts Obama and Netanyahu advises that MK Eldad accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of buckling under intense pressure from President Barack Obama, who wants to prevent any Israeli retaliation against the Palestinian Authority in its bid to win recognition as a state from the United Nations.

He (Eldad) charged that Obama was holding Netanyahu "at gunpoint" - the gun being the U.S. threat to go back on its promise to veto the Palestinian statehood bid in the UN Security Council.

Specifically, Obama has demanded that Netanyahu and Israel's supporters in the United States pressure Congress to abort two pending resolutions to penalize the Palestinian Authority (PA) if it pursues its bid, Eldad claimed.

One would shut off U.S. aid funds to the Palestinians and a second would support Israel's right to annex the West Bank. The legal justification for such actions, cited by many Israeli officials, would be that the unilateral statehood request would be a direct violation of the 1993 Oslo Accords.

Eldad said he was certain of the accuracy of his information, but declined to name his sources.

Obviously, Obama wanted to avoid the annexation bid at all costs as he wanted to keep alive his plan for negotiations. In his speech which has been liberally praised as pro-Israel he said,

I put forward a new basis for negotiations in May of this year. That basis is clear. It's well known to all of us here. Israelis must know that any agreement provides assurances for their security. Palestinians deserve to know the territorial basis of their state.

In effect Obama prevented the PA from being penalized for breaching Oslo yet again. He wants to keep Israel shacked by Oslo so it is not free to act.

No doubt part of this deal is Netanyahu's agreement to maintain a defacto freeze throughout J&S and Jerusalem.

Palestinian Statehood and the United Nithings

by Bill Levinson

Nithing, a word of Scandinavian origin, is the most inherently offensive word in existence. It means an enemy of humanity whose evil goes far beyond the rational self-interest of a common criminal. A criminal might kill for gain, but a nithing, like Lawrence Russell Brewer or Ted Bundy, murders for pleasure. If somebody called you a nithing in Viking times, you had to fight a duel (holmgang) with him to avoid outlawry.

The U.N. has proven repeatedly that it is a liability and not an asset to world peace. It has instead served as an enabler for international aggression and terroristic violence, and it should accordingly be called the "United Nithings."

Bloody Truth
Bloody Truth

Yedida's song attempts to highlight the fragility of past Arab-Israeli Agreements and Treaties. The track conveys the existential dangers to Israel inherent in relying on signed agreements with surrounding Arab dictatorships. The timing of the song's release coincides with present Palestinian attempts to use the UN to impose a solution. This process negates Israel's right to secure and mutually negotiated borders.

The Key Theme? Not Israeli Panic or Isolation But Western Unreliability

Rubin Reports

"Then was the palm of the hand sent from before Him, and this writing was inscribed: MENE MENE, TEKEL UPHARSIN. This is the interpretation of the thing....Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting." -The Book of Daniel

By Barry Rubin

Agence France Press reports that the Palestinian bid for UN recognition of unilateral statehood is "causing diplomatic panic" in the United States and Israel.

While Israel is certainly concerned, I think "panic" is totally wrong as a description. After all, Israel's overwhelming interpretation is that the UN event will change nothing. As for U.S. panic, where has the Obama Administration been for the last year when this outcome was totally predictable?

The Associated Press says that Israel is "increasingly isolated" ahead of the vote. I don't think that's how Israelis look at this either. We know that cynicism makes sense-various countries will vote for the resolution or abstain...

Bill Clinton: Netanyahu killed the peace process

A friend of Israel would see things differently or would have kept his mouth shut. The message should have been, Arafat lost Palestine. Things change. What was, won't be again. Bibi is serving the will of the people. Ted Belman

By Josh Rogin Thursday, September 22, 2011 FOREIGN POLICY

Who's to blame for the continued failure of the Middle East peace process? Former President Bill Clinton said today that it is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - whose government moved the goalposts upon taking power, and whose rise represents a key reason there has been no Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

Clinton, in a roundtable with bloggers today on the sidelines of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, gave an extensive recounting of the deterioration in the Middle East peace process since he pressed both parties to agree to a final settlement at Camp David in 2000. He said there are two main reasons for the lack of a comprehensive peace today: the reluctance of the...

The silence of American Jewish leaders

by Isi Leibler

Traditionally, Diaspora Jewish leaders speak up on behalf of Israel, frequently even taking the lead on issues in which geopolitical considerations made it problematic for the Jewish state to be engaged. Examples abound: the plight of Soviet Jewry, the campaign to rescind the UN resolution equating Zionism with racism, the World Jewish Congress exposure of Kurt Waldheim as a war criminal and, more importantly, achieving restitution for Jewish assets plundered by the Nazis from various bodies including the Swiss banks and insurance companies.

However, with the erosion of cabinet solidarity after the Rabin era, the intimate relationship which existed between Diaspora Jewish communities and the Israeli government and its ambassadors rapidly deteriorated.

In stark contrast to former charismatic leaders like David Ben-Gurion, Menachem Begin and even Yitzhak Rabin, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is inclined to release trial balloons to test the waters of public opinion...

Obama caves at UN

By Ted Belman

Obama came through for Israel at the UN. The primary message of his speech was that the PA cannot bypass negotiations and must compromise. He did not even mention that negotiations should be based on '67 lines nor did he mention east Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine. Nor did he mention settlements. No more daylight between US and Israel.

Herb Keinon of JPOST wrote a great analysis.

"Let us be honest with ourselves: Israel is surrounded by neighbors that have waged repeated wars against it," Obama said. "Israel's citizens have been killed by rockets fired at their houses and suicide bombs on their buses. Israel's children come of age knowing that throughout the region, other children are taught to hate them. Israel, a small country of less than eight million people, looks out at a world where leaders of much larger nations threaten to wipe it off of the map. The Jewish people carry the burden of centuries of exile and persecution, and fresh...

Democrat Apologizes to Muslims

Laura: Illinois Democrat Congressman Mike Quigley apologizes on behalf of America to an islamic group. This is so beyond revolting. This pathetic dhimmi does not speak for me or the overwhelming majority of Americans. What sort of mental illness causes liberals
to identify with the enemy? This is among the numerous reasons while I will
never vote for a democrat again.

If America was truly discriminating, those jihadists who massacred 3000 Americans on 9/11 would never have been allowed to enter this country in the first place. They would never have been allowed to roam freely around this country, go to flight school or board those airplanes. If America discriminated, the Fort Hood jihadist who murdered 13 soldiers would have never been allowed in the army and remain there even after he lectured about how it was the duty of muslims to murder American soldiers. No, the problem is that America does not discriminate. We have open borders where anyone is allowed in, regardless of...

Columbia students disinvited from Ahmadinejad dinner

(JTA) -- Members of a Columbia University international relations group will not attend a dinner with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the invitation was withdrawn.

The invitation to about a dozen members of the Columbia International Relations Council and Association was rescinded Monday by the Iranian mission to the United Nations due to the extensive and negative media coverage, the university's Spectator newspaper reported.

The dinner is still scheduled to take place Wednesday evening. Other Columbia students, from the university's School of International and Public Affairs, are still planning to attend the dinner, the Spectator reported.

Some Columbia students had organized an on-campus protest called "Just Say No to Ahma(dinner)jad."

The university is not involved with the dinner.

Ahmadinejad is in New York to participate in the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. His controversial address at Columbia in 2007 embroiled the campus in a debate over freedom of speech and academic freedom.

Fellow patriots,

A few years ago, I saw a video (now removed) of the Muslim American Society's annual conference, where a speaker talked about infiltrating BOTH the Democratic Party and the Republican Party to advance Islam.  Sadly, Islamists have been following through on this plan, albeit with more success among Democrats than Republicans.

The fact that the Republican Party hasn't been as infiltrated should not be cause for comfort.  See what American defender David Horowitz has to say as he names names and calls out the Islamists in our midst, at top levels of both the Obama Administration and the former Bush Administration.  If you're in a hurry, start viewing at 7:45 minutes and watch for about a minute.

David Horowitz on the Threat of Political Islam and Sharia Law

In his speech at CPAC this year, David Horowitz gave a good explanation of the dangers posed to our nation, our Constitution, and western civilization, by the rising tide of "political Islam." Political Islam has swept over much of Europe and is now trying to force its Sharia Law, which is incompatible with our Constitution, in our American courts. His comments on this topic begin at about the three minute mark of this video:

This WEEKLY MIDDLE EAST REPORT is titled Obama's Disastrous Handling of the Middle East. A year ago at this time, President Obama addressing the opening session of the UN General Assembly spoke of his desire to see a Palestinian State when the world body meets again. He did not however anticipate the so-called Arab Spring, nor the fact that his own one-sided demands of Israel would embolden Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to reject negotiations with Israel, and try to create a Palestinian State unilaterally. Abbas himself has blamed Obama for his decision to go to the UN.

OBAMA'S DISASTROUS HANDLING OF THE MIDDLE EAST

By: Joseph Puder

The victory of Republican Bob Turner in the solidly Democratic Ninth District of New York, where Jews form a large percentage of the electorate, shocked the Democratic Party establishment. This upset, ending an 89 year district hold by the Democrats, sent a clear message to President Obama that many among the 78% of Jews who voted for him in 2008 recognize his failed policies in the Middle East, and his mismanagement of the domestic economy. The Washington Post called it a "referendum on Obama's stewardship of the U.S. economy," while for many of the Orthodox Jewish voters it was a referendum on Obama's treatment of Israel and his Middle East policies in general.  In his victory speech on September 14, 2011, Turner said: "We have had it with your treatment of Israel."

It is not however merely Obama and his administration's disastrous handling of the Middle East, or his contemptuous regard of Israel and its Prime Minister that have shaken many Jews out of their slumber, it is also those citizens who are objective enough to recognize the transformation of the Middle East into a hostile and Islamist region due, in part, to Obama's appeasement of Islam and his perceived weakness by both Arab and Muslim leaders and their people.

Addressing the Muslim world from Al-Azhar Islamic University in Cairo on June 4, 2009, Obama declared: "I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles - principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings."

Obama appears unwilling to understand that justice for Muslims means the liquidation of Israel as a Jewish State - contrary to his speech in the UN where he spoke of Israel's security.  Considering the dearth of available information, Obama should know that there is no tolerance for non-Muslim minorities in the Arab and Muslim world. As for progress, the Muslim Middle East constitutes societies and governments that are economically backward and repressive. One wonders what common principles Obama was referring to.

In March 2010, the Obama administration condemned Israel for building apartments in Jerusalem, precipitating rejection by the Palestinians of any talks with Israel, which has now led to the Palestinian Unilateral Declaration of Independence - expected to be raised this week at the U.N.  Had Obama not made an issue of the apartment building in Jerusalem (which is, in fact, totally legal) the Palestinians would not have had a built-in excuse to intensify their rejection of talks with Israel.  The irony can be seen in a blogger's headline "Obama condemns Israel for building apartments in Jewish parts of Jerusalem, but not Ahamdinejad for building nukes."

Responding to President Obama's Middle East speech on May 19, 2011, ABC-TV contributor George Will commented: "Barack Obama thinks he must incessantly talk about Middle Eastern events that he can affect only marginally, if at all. But before firing up his teleprompter, he should have something helpful to say. Thursday, (May 19th) he did not. Obama said, "We face an historic opportunity. There will be good days and bad days. Consent is good, coercion is bad. Women should be emancipated." Will interjected "Syria's President Assad "must" do this or that? And if he does not?

Regarding the Arab Spring, the president should remember Burke's axiom: Before we congratulate people on their freedom, we should see what use they make of it. Obama should have said nothing about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, his prior statements (about Israel's housing construction, and a deadline for a peace settlement) having made matters worse. Now, there is nothing more to be said until a Palestinian leader also says that."

George Will added, "Obama's absentminded military intervention in a third Islamic nation -- in the civil war in Libya's tribal society, supposedly to protect civilians-- has made his muted response to Syria's massacre of civilians excruciatingly embarrassing."

Now let us consider the results of Obama's intervention in the Middle East.  In the so called "Arab Spring" Obama supported the overthrow of U.S. ally - President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt.  Instead of calling for Mubarak to enact reforms or alternatively for Egypt to have a phased transition of power, Obama basically supported a regime change and threw Mubarak "under the bus."  The Gulf Arabs and the Saudis in particular considered Obama's action in Egypt as a betrayal of a friend, and when Bahrain - a Gulf Cooperation Council Member was threatened by Shiite masses incited by Iran, the Saudis ignored Obama and acted swiftly with military force to bolster the Bahraini government.

Obama ignored the advice of his own State Department regarding Egypt, and failed to consult with its Israeli ally, which has been impacted immediately by the revolution in Egypt. Obama also overlooked the concerns of other friendly Arab states like Jordan and Saudi Arabia in the aftermath of the regime change in Egypt.  Moreover, Obama has declared his acceptance of having the Muslim Brotherhood share power in Egypt.

Reporting for the Los Angeles Times on January 31, 2011, Paul Richter and Peter Nicholas wrote, "U.S. open to a role for Islamists in new Egypt government." Their report went on to say that "The Obama administration said for the first time that it supports a role for groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, a banned Islamist organization, in a reformed Egyptian government."

In the meantime, the Obama administration Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, when testifying on Capitol Hill before the House Intelligence Committee, said that the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) "pursued social ends and a betterment of the political order." Clapper also "downplayed the MB religious underpinnings," adding, "The term 'Muslim Brotherhood' ... is an umbrella term for a variety of movements, in the case Egypt , a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and has decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam."

The Obama administration has de-facto designated Turkey as its sub-contractor in Syria with Obama promoting Erdogan's Islamist government as a "model" for the Muslim world. This despite the fact that Turkey is allied with Iran and Syria and denied the U.S. the rights to fly over its airspace during the 2003 war in Iraq.  Erdogan's Turkey has also been making confrontational moves towards Israel - most recently threatening to have Turkish naval vessels escort a Turkish flotilla to break Israel's blockade of Gaza. Turkey, with its embrace of Hamas, has become the most anti-Israel force in the Middle East following Iran.

In Lebanon, Obama abandoned the forces behind the democratic Cedar revolution, while passively observing the Hezbollah takeover of Lebanon. Walid Jumblatt, the Druze leader who had previously supported the March 14th government of Saad Hariri abandoned it because he sought to secure his people's future by going with the "winner" which is Iran/Hezbollah, and because he recognized that Obama was too weak to fight for Lebanese democracy.

Obama seeking "engagement" with Iran wasted precious time, which enabled the Islamic Republic to reach nuclear capability, and while sanctions have finally been imposed, it is a case of "too little and too late."  Moreover, the Obama administration has no strategy for confronting Iran's expanding influence and meddling throughout the Middle East, while at the same time killing Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Syriathe Obama administration pursued a policy that was doomed from the get go. It tried to pull Syria away from Iran while the Assad regime increased its support for terrorism, meddled in Lebanese affairs and helped in killing Americans in Iraq.

Hamas was given indirect aid by the Obama administration through its generous aid package to the Palestinian Authority, and made no effort to remove the radical anti-American regime in Gaza.  Obama's administration also pressed Israel to minimize its sanctions against Hamas, and has taken no actions to confront and/or deter Turkey's embrace of this terrorist regime.

Finally, Obama's decision the withdraw U.S. combat troops from Iraq, guarantees that Iraq will become an Iranian satellite, hostile to the U.S.

Obama's misguided Middle East policies have put Israel in greater danger, reduced American influence in the region and put American interests in jeopardy.  For many Americans, including those in the 9th District in New York, a clear message has been sent to Obama through their ballot.

Fellow patriots,

Islamists have been working hard to portray Muslims as a persecuted minority and thereby justify their own acts of exclusion, oppression, civil disobedience, and terrorism.  One particular avenue of this contrived victimhood is the burqa controversy arising in Europe and spearheaded by France.  After numerous cases where terrorists and criminals have used burqas to conceal identities (see http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2006/11/niqabs-and-burqas-as-security-threats ), it's obvious to anyone paying attention that burqas accomplish the same object as the masks of Wild-West outlaws: they hide criminals.  Therefore, a burqa ban is simply a matter of public safety and law enforcement, and should not even have been necessary given numerous laws against identity concealment via masks and hats that have always existed.

Islamists have become so defiant, though, that specific laws have become necessary to address their religious claims.  Even in the United States, we have already seen Muslim women insist on being veiled for their driver's license photo ( see http://islam.about.com/od/dress/f/hijab_id.htm ) and cry "PERSECUTION!" when refused.

When hearing Islamists cry about their rights being violated, remember this: NIQABS, BURQAS, AND VEILS OF ANY SORT ARE NOT REQUIRED BY ISLAM!  All a person has to do is visit an Islamic nation such as Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, or Lebanon (among others) to verify this.

The point of veiling is not religious at all.  It's a political statement designed to create a wedge between Muslims and the non-Muslim societies of the West -- a subtle form of defiance and intimidation intended to stir conflict.

As the photo below verifies, all-covering "Islamic" garb can make a person virtually unidentifiable.  If the West accepts the fallacious argument that wearing such clothes is a protected religious right, then we are likely to see criminals use these clothes to reduce the West to the same kind of lawlessness found throughout the Islamic world.

Hold firm,

Dave

One of the women pledged immediately to appeal to the EuropeanCourtofHumanRights to overturn the ban, which President Nicolas Sarkozy says protects women and guarantees equality but opponents argue violates human rights and panders to xenophobia.

The Truth about Islamic Crusades and Imperialism

By James Arlandson

Historical facts say that Islam has been imperialistic-and would still like to be, if only for religious reasons. Many Muslim clerics, scholars, and activists, for example, would like to impose Islamic law  around the world. Historical facts say that Islam, including Muhammad, launched their own Crusades against Christianity long before the European Crusades.

Today, Muslim polemicists and missionaries, who believe that Islam is the best religion in the world, claim that the West has stolen Islamic lands and that the West (alone) is imperialistic. One hardline Muslim emailer to me said about the developed West and the undeveloped  Islamic countries: 'You stole our lands' and then he held his finger on the exclamation key to produce a long string of them.

Thus imperialism, a word that has reached metaphysical levels and that is supposed to stop all debates and answer all questions, explains why Islamic countries have not kept up with the West. The emailer did not look inwardly, as if his own culture and religion may play a role. Instead, it is always the West's fault.

Westerners-even academics-accept the notion that the West alone was aggressive. It seems that Islam is always innocent and passive. It is difficult to uncover the source of this Western self-loathing. It is, however, a pathology that seems to strike Westerners more than other people around the globe.  This anti-West pathology shows up in Westerners' hatred for the European Crusades in the Medieval Age.

Mr. Netanyahu goes to New York

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 02:22 PM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

I write to draw attention to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the United Nations today. As Daniel Patrick Moynihan demonstrated once upon a time, there is something especially thrilling about the truth being told in this particular forum (a "theater of the absurd," in Netanyahu's reckoning). It happens rarely, but it happened today. Attention should be paid:

Ladies and gentlemen, in Israel our hope for peace never wanes. Our scientists, doctors, innovators, apply their genius to improve the world of tomorrow. Our artists, our writers, enrich the heritage of humanity. Now, I know that this is not exactly the image of Israel that is often portrayed in this hall. After all, it was here in 1975 that the age-old yearning of my people to restore our national life in our ancient biblical homeland - it was then that this was braided - branded, rather - shamefully, as racism. And it was here in 1980, right here, that the historic peace agreement between Israel and Egypt wasn't praised; it was denounced! And it's here year after year that Israel is unjustly singled out for condemnation. It's singled out for condemnation more often than all the nations of the world combined. Twenty-one out of the 27 General Assembly resolutions condemn Israel - the one true democracy in the Middle East.

Well, this is an unfortunate part of the U.N. institution. It's the - the theater of the absurd. It doesn't only cast Israel as the villain; it often casts real villains in leading roles: Gadhafi's Libya chaired the U.N. Commission on Human Rights; Saddam's Iraq headed the U.N. Committee on Disarmament.

You might say: That's the past. Well, here's what's happening now - right now, today. Hezbollah-controlled Lebanon now presides over the U.N. Security Council. This means, in effect, that a terror organization presides over the body entrusted with guaranteeing the world's security.

You couldn't make this thing up....

There is more, all of it worth reading. Let's go to the (slightly clipped) tape.

Another Smoldering Stogie of Misinformation from the Lung Association

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 02:20 PM PDT

(Steven Hayward)

If you watch Fox News-and really, who doesn't watch Fox News?-you've probably seen the ads the American Lung Association is running displaying a red baby carriage with a coughing infant making its way to the U.S. capitol, urging us to urge Congress not to "weaken" the Clean Air Act.  "More air pollution means more childhood asthma," the narrator says. (There isn't a direct link to the ad, but you can find it on the linked site of their PR agency, the Plowshare Group, and if that name doesn't give it all way. . .)

"Congress can't ignore the facts," the narrator says, but apparently the ALA can.  Is there any place in the U.S. that is experiencing "more" air pollution?  If there is, I am not aware of it, nor am I aware of any EPA data that supports that claim.  Air pollution continues to fall everywhere in the U.S., and is going to continue to decline.  The ALA ad is fundamentally dishonest in that Congress is not proposing to "weaken" the Clean Air Act; it is merely proposing to stop its further extension that will do little or nothing to accelerate the continuing decline in air pollution levels.   (The EPA's own computer models, for example, predict about a 60 percent decline in emissions from cars and trucks over the next 20 years simply from fleet turnover.)  In fact, the recent ozone rules that Obama dumped would have had no effect, for example, on the rate at which air pollution is falling in Los Angeles.  (Emissions from cars and trucks have been falling about 8 percent a year for over a decade, with more to come.)  All it would have done is put about 85 percent of the nation in "nonattainment" areas, tripping requirements to expand their regulatory bureaucracies.

Solyndra Pleads the Fifth

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 01:08 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

This morning, two top executives of Solyndra, CEO Brian Harrison and CFO W.G. Stover, appeared before a House Energy and Commerce Committee investigative panel. They didn't testify, however. They declined to answer every question put to them on the ground that the answers might tend to incriminate them.

The Fifth Amendment, which protects witnesses against self-incrimination, is pretty much an all-or-nothing thing. The witness can identify himself and perhaps answer a few background questions, but he cannot answer any substantive questions relating to the subject matter of the investigation. If he does, he waives his right to take the Fifth. Criminal defense lawyers, like those advising Harrison and Stover, take no chances. They won't let their clients answer anything. So this is what it looks like when witnesses plead the Fifth:

Not good optics for the evening news, as far as the Obama administration is concerned.

A bridge too far

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 05:57 AM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

President Obama made an appearance yesterday at the Brent Spence Bridge in Cincinnati to promote his "jobs" (i.e., tax) bill. The bridge was intended to symbolize Republican opposition to Obama's bill, though the bill hasn't proved to be a big hit with Democrats in the Senate either. The bridge spans the Ohio River separating Ohio, home of House Speaker John Boehner, from Kentucky, home of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The bridge was also intended to be symbolic of the good works that Obama's bill will perform. Shovel-ready jobs, infrastructure, (union) jobs, an economy that lasts, and all that.

Here is the text of Obama's speech. Here is the White House account of Obama's appearance. Here is the video of Obama's speech (and it is worth watching).

A conventional news account of Obama's appearance captures his themes:

Standing before an aging bridge that links the home turfs of top Republicans in Congress, President Barack Obama touted his $447 billion jobs bill Thursday as a way to help repair the nation's infrastructure.

Obama called out by name Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, as he spoke near the Brent Spence Bridge that carries Interstates 75 and 71 over the Ohio River.

"Mr. Boehner, Mr. McConnell, help us rebuild this bridge," Obama said. "Help us rebuild America. Help us put this country back to work. Pass this jobs bill right away."

Andrew Malcolm recounts the facts that belie Obama's themes:

You know all those rusting bridges that President Obama wants to spend billions more dollars repairing to allegedly stimulate the economy?

He's headed out to one today which he's described as a "bridge that needs repair between Ohio and Kentucky that's on one of the busiest trucking routes in North America." It is on a busy trucking route, spanning the Ohio River between Covington, Ky., and Cincinnati.

It's the Brent Spence Bridge. It doesn't really need repairs. It's got decades of good life left in its steel spans. It's just overloaded. The bridge was built to handle 85,000 cars and trucks a day, which seemed like a lot back during construction in the Nixon era.

Today, the bridge sort of handles more than 150,000 vehicles a day with frequent jam-ups.Obama speaks to the American Legion 8-30-11

So, plans are not to repair or replace the Brent Spence Bridge. But to build another bridge nearby to ease the loads.

But here's the problem, as John Merline graphically notes here, that could screw up all those envisioned photo op shots of the Democrat and the traffic:

The president's jobs bill is designed for "immediate" highway spending.

And the new $2.3 billion Cincy bridge is not scheduled to even start construction for probably four years, long after Republicans have scheduled the Obama presidency for completion.

And without delays, it wouldn't be finished until 2022, when no one will be counting Obama's rounds of golf.

The bridge itself doesn't actually need repairs.

In other words, the bridge is indeed symbolic. It is symbolic of Obama's demagogy, his loose way with facts, his profligacy with public funds, his cluelessness about job and wealth creation. "Pass this bill"? Pass this gas is more like it.

Rick Perry: Still Not Quite Ready For Prime Time

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 05:45 AM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

A long-time reader writes:

Prompted by a request from John, I thought I would offer my impressions of the Fox/Google Republican presidential debate. First, let's declare a winner in pure debate terms, without regard to standing in the polls and likelihood of electoral success. For me, that winner is Herman Cain. While I can't vouch for its accuracy, Cain's explanation of why he likely would not have survived his bout with cancer under Obamacare was probably the best answer of the evening by any candidate. But his other answers were spot on, as well. And "9-9-9" is starting to grow on me.

Rick Santorum turned in the second best performance, I thought. Once again, he mixed it up very effectively - this time with Rick Perry on immigration and Jon Huntsman on Iraq. I also loved the way he worked Ronald Reagan into his explanation of how he would get America moving again.

To date, Santorum has combined the ability to articulate conservative principles and to provide solid analysis (as these debates go) of specific issues better than anyone in the field. I understand that he hasn't come close to catching fire, and probably won't. But if I had the opportunity to vote in a straw poll, Santorum would probably be my choice.

Michele Bachmann debated well, once again. At this point, though, she is probably no more than a spoiler. Indeed, the better she debates the more ground she seems to lose. Bachmann also continues to play fast-and-loose with the facts. Tonight, in arguing that Republicans can win the presidency without "settling" for a less than pure conservative, she claimed (if I recall correctly) that President Obama has the lowest approval rating of any president in memory. In fact, however, our last president had significantly lower ratings.

The person Bachmann most threatens to "spoil" is Rick Perry. If she stays in the race through the Iowa caucus, which seems likely, she could cause him serious damage. Right now, she's focusing mostly on his decision to order vaccinations for 12 year-old girls, with the suggestion that he was influenced by campaign contributions from Merck. But Perry seems even more vulnerable on immigration issues.

There is some evidence that Perry has damaged himself with weak debate performances. Tonight, he may have done so again. But the news isn't all bad on that front. The good news if that, when asked questions for which he's prepared, he usually sounds good (though he did stumble on his canned catalogue of three Romney flip-flops). The bad news is that, when asked a question for which he's not prepared, particularly a question about policy, he treads water at best.

This suggests that, if Perry works hard enough, effective answers should begin to predominate. Right now, though, he's not quite ready for prime time.

Mitt Romney wasn't quite ready for prime time in 2008. Now he certainly is, at least as far as debating goes (whether he can connect with voters remains to be seen). Tonight, he gave another assured performance.

For me, his most interesting answer came when asked about his (alleged) claim that Perry is "unelectable." Romney explained that he never actually said that, which is fine, assuming (as I do) that it is accurate. Then, Romney took the high road, saying that Perry faces challenges, as all of the candidates do.

Here, I thought he gave too much ground. Though Romney may not have claimed that Perry is unelectable, he has been promoting the notion that Perry's past statements on issues like Social Security raise serious electability questions. By backing off of this theme as far as he did in response to a direct question, I thought Romney looked weak - a bit like when Tim Pawlenty did when he backed away from his attacks on Romneycare.

However, the long-time readers with whom I watched the debate, who possess at least as much political savvy as I do, thought that it served Romeny well to take the high road on this question. And certainly, he mixed it up plenty with Perry during the course of the evening. So perhaps Romney made the right call not to attack one more time. Most likely, it was a moment that, though interesting, will prove inconsequential.

My most important takeways are (1) Perry isn't debating at the level that probably will be required of him, (2) if he works at it enough, Perry may be able to reach that level, but (3) Perry has problems on some pretty important issues, most notably immigration, that cannot be solved by better debating.

More Distraction From the Left

Posted: 25 Sep 2011 02:30 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

If the 2012 election is run on the issues, the GOP will win in a landslide. The Left's strategy for avoiding this outcome is to create as many distractions as possible. We saw it first with the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party poses a serious threat to liberalism. It is the most authentic grass-roots political movement of the last half-century, and its emphasis on limited government, fiscal responsibility and individual freedom resonates with most Americans. The last thing the Left wants to do is debate limited government and fiscal responsibility, so instead it resorted to demonization, with the absurd claim that the Tea Party is racist. False though it was, the smear campaign probably influenced some unsophisticated voters.

Now the Republican presidential race is taking shape, and again voters are hearing themes that appeal to most Americans; not only that, they are seeing candidates who, in most cases, know how to make sense without a teleprompter. That will never do. So, once again, the Left is resorting to distraction-anything to make the news cycle focus on something other than the message of the Republican candidates.

Why We're Reading Hayek Again

Posted: 25 Sep 2011 06:54 AM PDT

(Steven Hayward)

Matt Ridley, author of a splendid book,The Rational Optimist, that has won the Manhattan Institute's Hayek Prize this year has a terrific article in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend ("From Phoenecia to Hayek to the 'Cloud'") that mentions the very passage from Hayek that I've mentioned several times here on Power Line.  Ridley reiterates the central Hayekian idea that I've been pounding into the heads of my students this semester in the course I'm teaching for the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University: "central planning cannot work because it is trying to substitute an individual all-knowing intelligence for a distributed and fragmented system of localized but connected knowledge."

Prompted by my occasional posts here about Hayek, I've heard from a number of friends wondering what prompts this sudden focus on Hayek.  And the simple one-word answer is: Obama.  He is the anti-Hayek in every way imaginable.  But there's more to the story than that.

Truth is I hadn't read Hayek much for nearly 15 years before Obama came to office, and for a simple reason: it didn't seem like we needed to.  With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, it seemed like classical liberalism (the proper term for free market libertarianism) had been more or less vindicated worldwide on the level of principle, even if practice would require decades of clearing away the tangles of irrational and counterproductive government intervention in markets.  But it seemed to be proceeding slowly in the right direction nonetheless: privatization was taking place on a wide scale, trade liberalization advanced (such as NAFTA even under a Democratic president) and many regulatory regimes were being swept away or reformed here and abroad: energy, telecommunications, finance, transportation, etc.  Some of these didn't work out right.  Electricity in California, for example, though this was more an example of how a partial de-regulation goes wrong.  Finance is more complicated.  The lesson that should have been learned from the failures or mistakes of regulatory reform would actually be highly consistent with Hayek's understanding that the rules of the marketplace are subtle in many cases.  But that's not the lesson learned from the supposed "failures" of deregulation, which should be understood more as government failures than market failures.  Instead, we panicked and the old ideas of Keynesian-style interventionism came back from the dead.

Green Fascism at Work

Sometimes I like to point out that even if catastrophic global warming could be conclusively proven, it would not change one crucial political fact: Al Gore and the environmental left are the last people you would trust to solve the problem.  This is a variation of my axiom that the environment is much too important to be left to environmentalists-they'll just screw it up further and crush our liberties.

Case in point is a story in the New York Times last Wednesday that escaped my notice.  (Hat tip: CR & SP.)  Know how we always hear that we must tackle climate change to protect the dispossessed poor in the developing world?  Well, it turns out that dispossessing the poor is what climate action is all about.  The Times story looks at one of the trendy ideas in the authoritarian climate change orthodoxy, planting trees in developing nations so that you can sell "offset credits" in the phony carbon exchange markets that have been set up.  Oxfam reports on how thousands of Africans have been forcibly evicted from their land, often violently, to make way for a tree plantation by some European company:

Fact Checking the "Fact Checker," Part 3

Posted: 24 Sep 2011 05:42 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

On Tuesday, I wrote a post called Who Checks the Fact-Checkers? In that post I criticized an article by Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post, who writes a regular feature called The Fact Checker. In The Fact Checker, Kessler purports to evaluate the truth or falsity of politicians' statements. In the article I criticized, which ran on Monday, Kessler accused Rick Perry of a "newbie mistake" in Perry's answer to a question on the Middle East from Time magazine:

Question: Do you believe there should be a Palestinian state?

I certainly have some concerns. The first step in any peaceful negotiation for a two-state solution for the Palestinians is to recognize the right of Israel's existence. They have to denounce terrorism in both word and deed. And they have to sit down and negotiate with Israel directly. Anything short of that is a non-starter in my opinion.

Kessler awarded two "Pinocchios" to Perry, saying that he "is stuck in a time warp," and that Perry's answer showed him to be "remarkably uninformed" on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Kessler based that criticism on the fact that in 1993, as part of the Oslo Accords, Yasser Arafat wrote a letter in which he said, "The PLO recognizes the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security."

Rep. Issa chooses bloggers to replace "legacy media" in Fast and Furious reporting

Sep 25, 2011 06:13 am | Coach Collins

By Doug Book, staff writer

Fed up with the cover provided Barack Obama by a  "mainstream"  media intent upon minimizing or concealing Administration involvement in the murderous Fast and Furious scandal,  Congressman Darrell Issa has decided to provide the opportunity to cover this story of Executive branch corruption and abuse of power to those who broke it in the first place-bloggers and members of the  "new media."

The  "Gunwalking"  Operation Fast and Furious represents the most egregious abuse of Executive branch authority and disregard for the rights and security of the American public since the days of the power hungry Roosevelt Administration.

Yet in the 9 months since the murder of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry last December,  the New York Times has published only 5 stories dealing even remotely with the roles of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms,  the FBI or the Department of Justice in this criminal affair.

A Historic Day plus one year

  By Jim Emerson, staff writer

In a press conference with Adm. Mike Mullen Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta joyfully announce September 20, 2011 as a "historic day." This is the day that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was repealed. The repeal is a blatant use of the military to shape public opinion and force the homosexual agenda and gay marriage on the American people a la Saul Alinsky.

 Shut up!

During the press conference Mr. Panetta said "My hope is that the command structure operating with the standard disciplines that are in place will implement those disciplines and will ensure that harassment doesn't take place and that all behavior is consistent with the discipline and the best interests of our military."  He just told the troops to shut up and this is in line with the mandatory training forced on the troops during the repeal process.

Obama's 2012 strategy: Fear, Fraud and a cowardly Republican

Sep 23, 2011 06:13 am | Coach Collins

By Doug Book, staff writer

With little more than a year remaining before the 2012 vote,  even the hyper-arrogant Barack Obama must be getting a bit edgy about his dwindling chances of re-election.

Three years ago,  mouthing vacuous speeches and making vacant promises,   Obama lied,  schemed and intimidated his way into the White House while his campaign committee of left wing journalists provided critical cover for personal and political histories which would have doomed the candidate had they seeped through the wall of media silence.

But although Obama could be presented as a relatively  "unknown quantity"  prior to the 2008 election and depend upon media lackeys to fill in the blanks with predictably glowing reports of towering intellect and limitless ability,  those days are now gone.

For as this radical leftist's Regime has displayed deep red colors from day one,  renewed claims of post-racial harmony,  a moderate political agenda or murky,  feel-good screeds about hope and change will ... Continue Reading:Obama's 2012 strategy: Fear, Fraud and a cowardly Republican

Debt Ceiling Defense Cuts Are Ticking Time Bomb for American National Security

By getting members of Congress to make the tough decisions about fiscal prudence, the White House will be able to keep its fingerprints off of any measures that impose politically unpopular austerity. And by holding the men and women of the United States military hostage, it has created a daunting incentive for the members of the supercommittee to act. As a bit of Machiavellian strategy, it's enviable. But for those of us with warmer blood coursing through our veins, the plan's willingness to use the military as a pawn is reprehensible.

Debate Reaction

I have learned over the years that when I offer my thoughts on GOP debates, folks tend to read between the lines and often think they can discern who I am supporting. So before I offer a few comments about last night's debate, let me reiterate: I am not endorsing any candidate at this time. My goal is to make sure we nominate the most conservative candidate who has the best chance of ending the Obama nightmare.

Having said that, I think Governor Perry, whom I like a lot, ran into another significant problem last night. In previous debates, it was Social Security. Last night it was illegal immigration, specifically his support of in-state tuition benefits for children of illegal immigrants.

Governor Perry obviously feels strongly about this issue. But when he accused fellow conservatives of being heartless, I doubt he won any votes. The polling on the issue is terrible -- even in Perry's home state.

A February poll by the University of Texas found that only 27% of respondents felt the children of illegal immigrants should be granted in-state tuition rates, while 59% believed they should pay out-of-state rates. It is a losing issue across the board. Consider these results:

  • Democrats were evenly split on the issue (43% each).
  • By a 24-point margin (55%-to-31%), independents said illegals should pay out-of-state tuition rates. And among Republicans, it was 74%-to-14%.
  • Even among ethnic minorities, Perry's position failed to garner majority support -- 46% of Latinos favored in-state tuition rates for the children of illegal aliens, but 38% opposed the idea. Among blacks, 36% were in favor, while 53% were opposed.

After the debate last night, Fox News pollster Frank Luntz discovered that his focus group members overwhelmingly felt that Romney had won the debate. Several changed their support from Perry to another candidate. One member of the focus group said his son wanted to attend Texas A&M but could not afford the out-of-state tuition rates. Perry's position on in-state tuition for illegals drove this voter away.

On Washington's biggest talk radio show this morning, most callers were lamenting Perry's position on illegal immigration, saying they were looking for another candidate. And the reviews of conservative opinion leaders were not helpful either, as this summary illustrates.

In Perry's defense, he has repeatedly called for more "boots on the border." I believe he is sincere about controlling the border, albeit without a fence, which many conservatives view as essential. And, of course, he is a thousand times better than Obama, who is pro-amnesty.

As of now, the GOP nomination battle still looks like it is wide open.

Best "Plagiarized" Line Of The Night

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson (the pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-drug legalization libertarian) delivered the best line of the night when he said, "My next-door neighbor's two dogs have created more shovel-ready projects than this president." The audience roared with laughter and applause.

But it appears it wasn't an original line. There are reports that Rush Limbaugh had said something nearly identical earlier in the day.

Mahmoud The Mad

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the United Nation's General Assembly yesterday. It wasn't long before he once again exposed himself for the evil thug he is.

As he has done in past U.N. speeches, Ahmadinejad denied the Holocaust and suggested that there were "hidden elements involved in September 11." He also mocked the U.S. for killing Osama bin Laden rather than bringing him to trial in order to "identify the elements behind the safe space provided for the invading aircraft to attack the twin World Trade Center towers."

In other words, Ahmadinejad, a sworn enemy of the United States, is also a "9/11 truther." Like so many Hollywood elites, he too believes that we attacked ourselves, that Osama bin Laden was innocent and that a trial would have exposed the truth.

Obama and his liberal allies insist we must rely upon the world community to achieve our foreign policy goals and defend our interests. One hundred ninety-three nations are represented at the U.N. Obamacare HHS rule would give government everybody's health records

AP Photos
Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius has proposed that medical records of all Americans be turned over to the federal government by private health insurers.

It's been said a thousand times: Congress had to pass President Obama's  health care law in order to find out what's in it. But, despite the repetitiveness, the level of shock from each new discovery never seems to recede.

This time, America is learning about the federal government's plan to collect and aggregate confidential patient records for every one of us.

In a proposed rule from Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the federal government is demanding insurance companies submit detailed health care information about their patients.

Erik Todd Dellums Presents: "Black Sheep"

I'm ready for you.  Ready for your outrage.  Ready for your demand that I toss in my Black Card.  Ready for some of you to end your subscription to this blog.  Ready for you to report me to Steve Harvey, Tom Joyner and the rest of the unofficial "Protect Obama By Any Means Necessary" crew.  I'm ready.

After watching tonight's interview with the President by NBC's Brian Williams,  I was at once dumbstruck, crushed and illuminated.  Mr. Williams asked President Obama to directly address the criticism and concern raised by Professor Cornell West and Tavis Smiley over the apparent disregard in policy of the staggeringly high percentage of  African Americans living in poverty.  The President's response was so cold and dispassionate that my mouth fell open.  As if still on the "Let's Sell My Jobs Bill" roadshow, Obama said simply, the "best remedy to end poverty is a job.  My jobs bill will help"...blah, blah, blah.  Then there was the defacto response Obama has whenever the interests of Black people are raised:  "I am not the President of one constituency"  blah, blah, blah.

The numbers:  16% of African Americans (that care to report it) are unemployed.  That's the highest in nearly 30 years.  Jobs, however are not the issue.  African American unemployment has always been high, save for slavery.  So Obama's focus on jobs, though belated and certainly necessary, will not significanty impact African Americans as a group.  In the best case scenario, the national unemployment rate will go down, yet African Americans will continue to be the least employed citizens in this nation.  So for Obama to quickly pivot from Mr. Williams' pointed question was as cheap as it was revelatory.  He doesn't get it.  And he probably never will.

Muslim students in Irvine 11 case found guilty of disrupting a speech by the Israeli ambassador

Friday, September 23rd 2011, 3:49

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Jurors found 10 Muslim students guilty Friday of disrupting a lecture by the Israeli ambassador at a California university in a case that stoked a spirited debate about free speech.

Jurors delivered the verdicts in Orange County Superior Court in the case involving a speech by Ambassador Michael Oren in February 2010 at the University of California, Irvine.

The students were also convicted of conspiring to disrupt Oren's speech.

The students were charged with misdemeanor counts after standing up, one by one, and shouting prepared statements at Oren such as "propagating murder is not an expression of free speech."

Morning Bell: The Latest Obamacare Implosion

Inefficient programs that don't solve problems and are passed against the will of the American people seem to be the Obama Administration's forte. Now their high-minded aspirations of a health care revolution are quickly unraveling as fatal glitches in Obamacare become apparent.

Next up for implosion? The Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Act, otherwise known as the "CLASS Act," which creates a government-run long term care insurance program too costly to sustain. At a time when entitlement programs in America have spun out of control, liberal proponents of Obamacare were pushing a new one that had no hope of staying afloat. Now, they are trying hide the fact that they were wrong as another bungling layer of Obamacare is exposed.

This is the most delicious, highly-refined version of crony capitalism: when the government actually starts banning your competitors. There is no way to achieve this effect without raw political power. Even the
dreadful monopolies liberals are always howling about can't actually "ban" their competition -- not without help from the politicians they pay big bucks to elect and influence.

Obama's International Outsourcing
By Rachel Marsden
HumanEvents.com

To gauge President Obama's lack of direct involvement on the international stage, you only have to look at the popularity polls in Europe, where his numbers still soar at around 75%. In Europe, leaders often become better liked as their visibility, leadership and influence decreases. Politicians' popularity can really soar when they leave office. The most popular political figure in France today, for instance, is former President Jacques Chirac. Despite his current and ongoing corruption trial, from which his participation has been excused due to reasons of demonstrable senility, he has never been so popular.

Obama, in contrast to his predecessor George W. Bush, has shown comparatively little hands-on international leadership on contentious world issues. Yet, even in America, he doesn't seem to be suffering much from it. His approval on the Libyan war sits at 42%, according to a recent Bloomberg poll-a figure not much lower than his overall approval of 45%.

Temple University Students for Intellectual Freedom (TUSIF)

Rejection of Intellectual and Academic Freedom at Temple University, our Letter to the Editor

  • Dear Editor,

Perhaps, the cruelest, most ironic joke students receive at Temple University is the deception of Intellectual and Academic Freedom.  How can such fundamental components of a university be so overlooked?  Well, in come the horse blinders that Temple puts on us during freshmen orientations and speeches by Temple leadership.

If there is one thing Temple ever so quickly boasts is its diverse student body from all 50 states and globe.  Leaders of the school's administration proudly voice, as tears of joy stream down their faces, that when they look out onto campus, they see the world.  While this is true, these are also horse blinders.  Diversity of racial and ethnic groups has ironically turned Temple into one of the most bigoted, myopically racist administrations in the country.  Temple, don't you dare flaunt me to the world as part of your perverse diverse face scheme.  Flaunt me because of my accomplishments and introduction of new ideas through TUSIF, which is something you will never do because TUSIF dampers your stride.

Regardless of their just-for-show Mission, Temple doesn't celebrate diversity of thought.  In fact, diversity of thought has never entered the Intelligentsia's arena of self-approved items from the radical 1960s agenda-for-change.  All that Temple celebrates-as if it were some infantile competition to the finish line-are the numbers of different colors of skin and shapes of faces, but not diversity of thought, for these two present obstacles to their elitist, better-made choices that we the masses should just accept as good for us because they-the Intelligentsia-know what is better for We the People.

However, what good is the celebration of diverse racial and ethnic groups, when Temple suppresses-if not completely omits-Intellectual and Academic Freedom?  Temple, you prioritize racist values over the enrichment that, with no agenda, diversity of thought offers you.

To Temple, We the students are impressionable pawns, whose minds they systematically manipulate by exposing us to select ugly aspects of America's past and present, as well as their personal biases, which they present as matter of fact.  This is indoctrination...and they are not embarrassed to promote and perpetuate it.

It is easy to fall victim to subtle indoctrination; I did.  It wasn't until months after I had founded the first version of Temple U. Students for Intellectual Freedom (TUSIF) that I realized I had unwittingly written within our mission Marxist lingo and Liberation Theology rhetoric, both of which are anti American, anti prosperity/progress, but very much champions of Institutional ignorance through strength and manipulation.

Temple University radicals should not use our classrooms as their political platforms to dictate what we should think.  The declaration on the Principles of Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure declared in 1915 that the teacher "should, above all, remember that his business is not to provide students with ready-made conclusions, but to train them to think for themselves, and to provide them access to those materials which they need if they are to think intelligently."

    In Freedom,

    Alvaro Watson, President

Temple University Students for Intellectual Freedom (TUSIF)

American Cival Rights Union

Correcting President Obama's Myriad Tax Fallacies

This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published September 22, 2011 on Forbes.com.

An emerging, disabling problem with our democracy is that increasingly we cannot even engage in intelligent public discussions of critical issues facing our country. The strategy of central political players today is to calculate what busy voters working hard and taking care of their families do not and will not know, and take advantage of that with abusive rhetoric that cannot be characterized as intellectually honest. Contributing greatly to that is the decline of what was formerly known as the mainstream media into effectively a party controlled press.

For example, for 30 years now the South American nation of Chile has demonstrated the enormous benefits to working people of empowering them with the freedom to choose personal savings, investment and insurance accounts in substitution for old fashioned social insurance programs hailing intellectually out of the late 19th century. Other countries have followed that lead in adopting similar reforms, including Great Britain and Australia. But in America we cannot even discuss this issue intelligently.

Or take the issue of global warming. Brave scientists soldiering on in pursuit of the objective truth are increasingly demonstrating the falsehood of the theory that human activities are threatening the planet with potentially catastrophic global warming. Their work is reported in thorough, careful, scientific publications such as the Heartland Institute's 860 page Climate Change Reconsidered.

Gov. Perry's Right about Social Security

This column by ACRU Policy Board Member and Professor of Economics Dr. Walter E. Williams was published September 21, 2011 on Townhall.com.
During the recent GOP presidential debate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said that Social Security is a "monstrous lie" and a "Ponzi scheme." More and more people are coming to see that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, but is it a lie, as well? Let's look at it.

Here's what the 1936 government pamphlet on Social Security said: "After the first 3 years -- that is to say, beginning in 1940 -- you will pay, and your employer will pay, 1.5 cents for each dollar you earn, up to $3,000 a year. ... Beginning in 1943, you will pay 2 cents, and so will your employer, for every dollar you earn for the next 3 years. ... And finally, beginning in 1949, twelve years from now, you and your employer will each pay 3 cents on each dollar you earn, up to $3,000 a year." Here's Congress' lying promise: "That is the most you will ever pay."

Another lie in the Social Security pamphlet is: "Beginning November 24, 1936, the United States government will set up a Social Security account for you. ... The checks will come to you as a right." Therefore, Americans were sold on the belief that Social Security is like a retirement account and money placed in it is our property. The fact of the matter is you have no property right whatsoever to your Social Security "contributions."

His Biggest Big Lies

This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published September 21, 2011 on The American Spectator website.

If you work hard, play by the rules, save your money, create jobs, and make a success out of yourself, President Obama and the Democrat party will plunder everything you have worked so hard for, because in their view that is only fair.

That is the meaning of the policies President Obama is espousing as he campaigns for re-election around the country this week. As Mark Steyn has explained, there is no bill yet that the President is demanding Congress pass, it won't create any jobs, and there is no money to pay for it. It is just a traveling road show, and we need to start to hold accountable our relatives, friends and neighbors who would fall for it, and thereby darkly threaten the entire future of America.

The Social Contract

This week President Obama said the obvious: that wealthy Americans, many of whom pay remarkably little in taxes, should bear part of the cost of reducing the long-run budget deficit. And Republicans like Representative Paul Ryan responded with shrieks of "class warfare."

It was, of course, nothing of the sort. On the contrary, it's people like Mr. Ryan, who want to exempt the very rich from bearing any of the burden of making our finances sustainable, who are waging class war.

The White House threatened on Wednesday to veto the latest attempt by House Republicans to thwart pollution regulations, saying the GOP-backed bill would delay and undermine critical health protections.

Republicans also plan to tack on a measure to slow for years regulations intended to curb mercury and other toxic pollution from power plants and to reduce smokestack emissions that blow downwind into other states.

Why Illegal Immigration Matters

The last round of Republican debates has brought the issue back to the fore, even though some hosts and pundits have warned the party not to get sidelined by discussing illegal immigration. But the question is does it matter?

Republicans in the last few years have begun surrendering values issues to focus on economic issues, but illegal immigration is not a values issue. It's not even simple a law issue-- it is an issue of basic economics.

The social safety net is undermined by demographics and uncontrolled spending, but the arrival of large numbers of people with large families who work off the books is a major load. It's a major load in the UK and through Europe. It's a major load here.

There are two diametrical responses to this problem. Some form of legalization, whether it's full amnesty or a path to citizenship or a special status for migrant workers. Or enforcement.

The problem with the variations of the first approach is that it is attempting to tame the problem without actually addressing it. Illegal immigration exists because employers want cheap labor and because illegal immigrants want access to a First World economy and its social safety net.

Amnesty or a path to citizenship does nothing to address either problem. Employers will still want cheap labor and illegal immigrants will still keep coming. A path to citizenship will legalize some of them, but that will do nothing for the overall problem.

Migrant workers gives employers access to cheap labor, but only temporarily. Liberal activism is sure to regulate any migrant labor and price it above that of illegal aliens-- and that puts us right back to square uno. On top of that giving millions of people access to a vast country in which they can easily vanish, or just make their way to sanctuary cities, can't be described as securing the border.

Our Immigration Ad Runs During Nationally Televised Debate the Day After National E-Verify Passes Through Committee

Obviously, the news of the week was the House Judiciary Committee's passage of Chairman Smith's national E-Verify legislation. (Read all about it here.) But the immigration issue also made a big splash during last night's GOP Presidential Hopefuls' debate on FoxNews.

During the first commercial break of the night, we ran a 30-second ad linking the impact of America's current legal immigration policy to unemployment. The timing was perfect since the candidates were asked questions about how they would handle unemployment just before the ad ran.

To watch our TV ad at http://www.numbersusa.org, click on the image below, and then click on the video image in the middle of the screen.

Unfortunately, the candidates weren't questioned about legal immigration during the debate, but the moderators did spend 12 minutes on immigration. The immigration segment was also moved to the first hour of the debate after landing in the second hour during the first three debates. You can read my blog to see what the candidates said.

Perhaps the most important result of the ad was forcing the nation's political reporters who were watching the debate to actually hear and see that somebody believes LEGAL immigration is a jobs issue and needs to be reduced. Roy says that from the phone calls he has gotten thus far from reporters, the ad apparently was shocking to many journalists. One reporter asked Roy how he justified such an "extreme" position. Roy notes, "The first step in moving a political idea into the possibility of solution is to get it into the public where it can shock people and even be ridiculed. Because national political leaders and mainstream media won't raise the subject, we have to find ways to inject it into the public square where we begin to de-sensitize the resistance so the solutions can be considered on practical merits."

Another success last night came when former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was asked if he supported Chairman Smith's national E-Verify law. Not only was the content of the question a win, but as part of the debate format, viewers were able to send in video questions via YouTube. The question posed to Gingrich was submitted by FAIR. You can watch their question here.

In the coming days, we'll update our Presidential Hopefuls' Grid with some of the new statements made by the candidates.

What's Next?: Many of you are probably asking what comes next now that Chairman Smith's Legal Workforce Act passed through the Judiciary Committee.

When the bill was introduced, it was also referred to the House Ways & Means Committee because of the Social Security Administration provisions in the bill. Those of you that have Reps. on that committee will be receiving action alerts in the near future. The rest of you will soon see new faxes posted on your Action Board urging your Reps. to support the bill when it reaches the House floor.

Thanks,

Susan's Paul Ryan Medicare Pamphlet - please print this and give it to your contacts

SAVING MEDICARE

Since 1964, our nation's senior citizens have relied on Medicare to ensure access to healthcare. Now the program is going broke -- and it is going broke fast.

It began spending its reserves in 2008 when payouts exceeded dollars collected for the program. [cite]

Predictions for exhaustion of the reserve vary, with 2024 identified by the Social Security Administration in the Trustees 2011 report. [cite]

The Democrat response is to reduce the amount Medicare reimburses physicians for their services. [cite]

This will result in fewer participating physicians and the physicians continuing in the program seeing fewer Medicare patients.

Patients will wait longer and have fewer choices in seeing a doctor.

If this makes access to care sufficiently untenable, or if Medicare does not get on viable financial footing, it will be administered through ObamaCare[cite].

This would include cost controls by a 15-member board of bureaucrats deciding wich treatments, drugs, and surgeries patients can receive.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget, has a plan which saves Medicare with no disruption to today's seniors and reasonable changes for future retirees.

The Ryan Plan is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. The future of our seniors' healthcare is too important to be decided on misinformation. Here are the facts about Medicare and the Ryan Plan.

The Ryan Plan in a Nutshell

Those currently retired and those close to retirement (55 and over) will see no change from the existing Medicare system. Existing physician reimbursement flaws will be corrected to encourage physicians to continue participating in the system.[cite]

On retirement, those currently under 55 will be provided vouchers from the government to help pay for health insurance. Voucher amounts will be based in part on income, with wealthier individuals receiving less assistance. Risk pools [cite] will be created to ensure that insurance companies will provide coverage to seniors, despite their generally higher use of medical care.

The result is retirees will have a system that gives them options, similar to that which members of Congress use and which will include options similar to Medicare Advantage, the popular plan eliminated by Obamacare. [cite]

The Ryan Plan Incorporates These Important Points

It is important that we

Plan now for changes, to avoid chaos later

The medicare system is running out of money. Change is coming, one way or another.

Pretending we can continue as we are is not an option, it is a recipe for disaster. The longer we wait to make changes, the greater the disruption to current and future retires, the more abruptly the changes will have to be implemented, and the fewer options we will have.

By implementing the Ryan Plan now, we will

  • maintain the existing system for current retirees and for individuals 55 and over
  • provide a sustainable, quality system for future retirees.

It is important that we...

Preserve the existing system, unchanged, for current retirees and workers 55 and older

This bears repeating:

  • Under the Ryan Plan, if you are retired, your Medicare coverage will not change.
  • If you are over 55, Medicare as it exists today will be there for you when you retire.
  • And the Ryan Plan provides for quality health insurance coverage upon retirement for those currently under 55.

It is important that we...

Maintain availability of insurance coverage for future retirees

Since individuals generally require more medical care as they age, it tends to be difficult for older individuals to find private health insurance that will cover them. That is one reason our existing Medicare system is considered so important for many. The Ryan Plan creates risk pools which encourage multiple insurance companies to offer health coverage to those of retirement age.

It is important that we...

Maintain affordability

Individuals have paid into the Medicare system with the promise that coverage will be there for them when they retire. Unfortunately, we are facing an economic crisis in this country and Medicare is a significant part of the problem. To save the system for everyone and to avert broader economic calamity, in the future wealthier Americans will have to bear a greater portion of their healthcare burden.

It is important that we...

Make it feasible for doctors to participate in Medicare

Currently in many areas of the country physicans are reimbursed for Medicare patients at a rate that does not cover their expenses. Recent changes put forth by the Democrats further reduce reimbursement. [cite] This is not sustainable for any business and as a result increasing numbers of physicians are discontinuing their participation in the Medcare program. Patients are finding that their physician is no longer a Medicare provider and when they look for another physician it is increasingly difficult for them to find a Medicare provider who is accepting new patients and can see them in a reasonable time. [cite]. The Ryan plan fixes the reimbursement problem, making it feasible for physicians to continue participating in Medicare.

It is important that we...

Keep medical decisions between patients and doctors, not remote government panels

The Ryan plan harnesses the free market and puts choice in the hands of the patient. Retirees will be able to pick the insurance plan that best meets their needs, applying government vouchers toward premium costs. Medical decisions would be made in consultation with their personal physician, based on the individual's situation and preferences.

Perry doubles down on immigration: 'you don't have a heart'

Governor Rick Perry has been criticized in the past by conservatives for his stance on illegal immigration, namely being in favor of providing funding for children of illegal immigrants. Glenn said Perry was consistent on the issue - but unfortunately he's consistently wrong. Perry doubled down on this stance during the debates last night and said you 'don't have a heart' if you are against it. What's Glenn think of this tactic? The answer on radio today. WATCH

Perry vs. Romney = 2012 depression

Watching Perry and Romney bicker over who said what in their books was not exactly the inspiring talk conservatives want to hear. It's petty but worse it reveals that each have far too much in common with Barack Obama, leaving many conservatives feeling like it's prom and they don't have a date. How did Glenn react to the testy exchange? Hear the clip & reaction from radio HERE.

Peace loving Palestinians throw rocks at car; hit baby in face

The Blaze has the video of a sweet little infant girl who was cut up after Palestinians hurled rocks at the car of an Israeli family. This type of random hate is not acceptable under any circumstances, but the fact that a little baby was in the car didn't seem to deter these peace loving Palestinians from smashing the windows out with rocks. Thankfully the girl is ok - but the images of the injuries are shocking. Get the complete story HERE.
