AP FACT CHECK: Obama's Jobs Plan Paid For? Seems Not...

 WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) - President Barack Obama's promise Thursday that everything in his jobs plan will be paid for rests on highly iffy propositions.

It will only be paid for if a committee he can't control does his bidding, if Congress puts that into law and if leaders in the future - the ones who will feel the fiscal pinch of his proposals - don't roll it back.

Underscoring the gravity of the nation's high employment rate, Obama chose a joint session of Congress, normally reserved for a state of the union speech, to lay out his proposals. But if the moment was extraordinary, the plan he presented was conventional Washington rhetoric in one respect: It employs sleight-of-hand accounting.

'Tea Party Zombies Must Die' Video Game Lets Players Kill Off Conservatives

An angry backlash from conservatives is looming against a video game company in Brooklyn, N.Y., that has created a violent first-person shooter game targeting conservatives. Called "Tea Party Zombies Must Die," the game enables users to bludgeon Bill O'Reilly with a crow bar, shoot Glenn Beck with a semi-automatic weapon, or stab former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with a knife.

The game was created by StarvingEyes Advergaming, and is the first video-game it offers to viewers who log onto the company's website. The firm apparently creates online video games for promotional purposes, and its site says its clients include Pepsi, NASCAR, History Channel, Mountain Dew, Red Bull, and GM.

Some researchers contend that first-person shooter games, where the user wields weapons to attack human targets, encourage actual acts of violence by helping a potential gunman to visualize and practice an attack. Virginia Tech mass murderer Cho Seung Hui, for example, was a devotee of first-person shooter (FPS) games.

Lt. Col. David Grossman, a former West Point psychology professor who has written several books on violence in the media, calls FPS games "murder simulators."

 They said we had to pass it to know what's in it, but over a year later, people STILL don't fully understand how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) - aka "ObamaCare" - will affect them and their health.

 That's why a coalition of citizens and health care professionals will present "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About ObamaCare But Didn't Know Who to Ask" on the campus of DeSales University in Center Valley, PA from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011 - which, ironically, happens to be Constitution Day.  DeSalesUniversity is located in the Lehigh Valley of PA, within easy driving distance of the major population centers of central, northeast, and southeast PA.

Policy professionals, physicians, business and legislative leaders, and representatives from groups most affected by the PPACA will share their insights and expertise through presentations, breakout sessions, exhibits, and panel discussions.

They'll explain how ObamaCare affects personal liberty and the Constitution, families and seniors, taxpayers, Medicare and the deficit, insurance premiums and the uninsured, businesses, employees and the economy, doctors, patients, and access to care, American innovation in medicine, and more. 

Also included will be detailed updates on state and national efforts to defund, repeal, replace, and nullify ObamaCare from some of the legislative leaders spearheading those efforts.

Participants will leave the three hour event far more informed about what's in the PPACA than most of the legislators who voted for it, and will be energized to get involved in the fight to save America's health care.  Participants, both live and online, will be empowered by their new understanding of how the PPACA will not accomplish any of the things its name implies, and will be able to effectively communicate that new understanding to others, providing important education about why this ill-conceived piece of legislation needs to be defeated by any means possible.

Already, according to Rasmussen's most recent poll, 54% of Americans want to see ObamaCare repealed, while only 39% oppose repeal - but the people who passed it clearly have not heard the voices of the American people yet.  The more Americans know about the PPACA, the more they dislike it, and this conference will help to provide the tools citizen advocates and health care professionals need to effectively participate in the process to defund, repeal, and replace ObamaCare.

The event will be free to the public on site in a venue which will seat 500, and a live streaming video, and a professionally produced program will promote information about our coalition's sponsoring groups, as well as providing important information about the PPACA.

1. Last Night, President Obama sowed the Seeds of His Own Destruction

Consider, objectively, some of the points of Barack Obama's plan.

He wants to extend unemployment benefits again. He wants to extend a payroll tax holiday. He wants to give tax credits to small businesses to hire people. He wants more government pork for more roads and bridges.

These are all things Republicans have gone along with in the past. These are all things Republicans will probably go along with this time.

Some of these things just preserve the status quo. The status quo last month created zero jobs.

In other words, Barack Obama has largely proposed a plan key portions of which can pass with bipartisan support. And they will pass with bipartisan support. And there will be a grand bipartisan signing ceremony. Lots of pictures will be taken.

No jobs will actually be created. The recession will double dip. But Barack Obama will have gotten his bipartisan jobs plan. So he will not be able to blame the GOP. He'll have to blame mother nature again.

By then, voters will have had enough. They will blame Barack Obama. They will see his ideas are failures. Barack Obama sowed the seeds of his own destruction by offering up just enough acceptable bipartisan compromises to make himself look leadenly, but those compromises are not what will create jobs. Obama will get blamed.

And the kicker?

2. Obama's Fuzzy Stimulus Math

Let's forget the fact that Obama's entire Stimulus 10.0 is a counterintuitive proposal that doubles down on the very failures that precipitated this speech. Let's also disregard the fact that enshrining unemployment insurance as a permanent handout will perpetuate unemployment. And more union-induced, short-term money drops on infrastructure will do nothing but stimulate traffic jams. Let's focus purely on the very numbers that the administration has offered -numbers that would undoubtedly be revised upward, if the plan is passed.

Total package - $447 billion

- 50% payroll tax cut for every employee, dropping the rate from 6.2% to 3.1%= $175 billion

-Obama also proposed cutting the employer payroll tax in half on the first $5 million of a firm's payroll in 2012. About 98% of firms have payrolls of $5 million or less.= $70 billion

-National infrastructure bank = $10 billion

- Pork project handouts to unions for roads, rails and bridges= $50 billion

-An unprecedented extension of unemployment insurance benefits to be extended for another year, beyond the 99 weeks= $62 billion.

-Handouts to public school teacher unions, even though we already spend more per capita on education than any other country=$35 billion

-Refurbishing schools, a responsibility of local government=$25 billion

-Handouts to community colleges=$5 billion

-Rehabilitate vacant property=$15 billion

Despite the steep cost, Obama claims that it will all be paid for. How will he pay for it?

3. All You Need To Know About the President's Speech

(1) The President took Richard Trumka of the AFL-CIO with him to Congress. Trumka's union saw 500 of its members storm a business last night, take hostages, and destroy property. The President also took Jeffrey Immelt of GE with him. General Electric is a prime example of a business that has profited lately not through the free market, but through the government picking winners and losers.

(2) Solydra, which got millions from Barack Obama in his last stimulus and had the President champion its cause, got raided by the FBi yesterday.

(3) We would not have to be subjected to this if President Obama's last attempts had worked - including attempts from when the the Democrats controlled both the White House and Congress.

We heard nothing new - just repackaged, failed ideas. Consider what we heard in 2009, 2010, and in January of this year.

4. Government Wants to Protect Your Neck

Rep. John Boehner recently requested from President Obama a list of any pending regulations that would cost business $1 billion or more.

Interestingly enough, Obama did as requested and some of the more egregious regulations have been making waves.

While they're all expensive and ridiculous, one particular regulation put another chink in the armor of an administration that I have said before, seems intent on bankrupting the American auto industry.

5. The Democratic Wipeout in Louisiana is of Biblical Proportions

Huey Long must be turning over in his grave. Qualifying closed today for Louisiana's Fall 2011 statewide elections, and the once super-dominant Democratic Party has failed to field a single credible candidate for statewide office.

Not a single one.

6. Alarm Bells at the White House Over David Weprin's Race in NY-9

Unlike the other New York special election races where the Democrats batted a thousand and the media covered them as prognosticators of doom and gloom for the GOP, there's been radio silence for the most part on the special election to replace Anthony Weiner in NY-9.

But there are alarm bells going on at the White House and the DNC. The DCCC just dropped a half-million dollars into a district the Democrats should easily win.

The House Majority PAC is suddenly dumping money into the race.

7. MITT ROMNEY'S Social Security blunder.

You've probably read by now Mitt Romney adviser Stuart Stevens' gleeful email to Ben Smith - and might I add that there is something unseemly about an ostensible Republican using Politico for what is essentially an internal debate? - crowing over Governor Rick Perry's rather sensible observation that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme:

"He has lost. No federal candidate has ever won on the Perry program to kill Social Security. Never has. never will."

A few things: first off, note that what Perry said is not what Romney had his minion accuse Perry of saying. Just to get that out of the way. Second - and much more importantly - federal candidates can in fact say in public that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme and still win elections. Just ask Senator Ron Johnson (R, WI).

8. Would A Campaign By Any Other Name Sound As ... Fraudulent?

The Obama campaign has set up a voter registration effort for the next election called "Project Vote" - the same name as a voter registration organization closely associated with Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN). The selection of this name for Obama's effort raises serious questions about what Obama intends to do with his get out the vote campaign.

Project Vote's connection to ACORN links it to voter registration fraud in the 2008 elections. Prior to the summer of 2008 (when an ACORN embezzlement scandal became public), Project Vote's board was made up entirely of ACORN staff members and ACORN members, according to The New York Times. An internal report by ACORN's lawyer Elizabeth Kingsley indicated that due to the tight relationship between Project Vote and ACORN, it was impossible to document that Project Vote's money had been used in a nonpartisan manner as required by law. ACORN and Project Vote ran voter registration drives which were largely underwritten by Project Vote in 2008 in states Obama needed to win the White House. Former Project Vote employee and ACORN whistleblower Anita Moncrief testified to under oath in 2008 that "Project Vote is a sister organization of ACORN. When I got there, I actually thought I was working for ACORN. . . I learned there wasn't much of a difference" between the two groups.

President Obama tonight pitched Stimulus 2.0 to a reluctant Congress and an angry electorate. The President rolled out his "American Jobs Act" and demanded repeatedly for Congress to "pass right away." The President's plan is very similar to his original Stimulus plan that has proven to be a total failure in allowing private enterprise to create jobs. Awareness of the true nature of Islam is becoming mainstream in the United States, thanks to every Paul Revere who is sounding the alarm.  As usual, Dr. Muqtedar Khan, the University of Delaware's Islamist-in-Chief, feigned the shock and distress of a wrongly accused man when he heard this news.  Could America's dislike for Shariah have anything to do with the penalties of death for apostasy, death by stoning for adultery, or the subjugation of women?  Of course not, claims Dr. Khan.  Obviously, these practices are as American as apple pie.  No, Dr. Khan assures us that the growing anti-Shariah buzz is a mere "prop," -- a mask for racism against Muslims.

Please bear in mind that I have attended Dr. Khan's lectures 5 times, and have heard him speak in glowing terms about how Christianity is on the decline in the United States while Islam is on the rise, youthful and full of power!

A new survey finds many Americans are uncomfortable with Muslims. September 6th, 2011 Poll: Many Americans uncomfortable with Muslims By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor Washington (CNN) - Ten years after 9/11, Americans are wrestling with their opinions of Muslims, a new survey found, and where Americans get their TV news is playing a role in those opinions. Nearly half of Americans would be uncomfortable with a woman wearing a burqa, a mosque being built in their neighborhood or Muslim men praying at an airport.   Forty-one percent would be uncomfortable if a teacher at the elementary school in their community were Muslim.   Forty-seven percent of survey respondents said the values of Islam are at odds with American values.

Memorials of Grief

It was around the time of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, that memorials stopped being remembrances of virtue, and became therapy sessions. The old statues of determined men gave way to empty spaces to represent loss. Their lessons of courage and sacrifice, were replaced by architecture as therapy session, clean geometrical shapes, reflective pools and open areas in which to feel grief at what was lost and then let go of it.

 

September 11 memorials have inevitably followed this same pattern, empty spaces, still pools of water groves and names tastefully inscribed in row after row. How do you tell the Ground Zero memorial from the Oklahoma City memorial? The Oklahoma City memorial has one reflecting pool and the September 11 memorial has two pools.

There is no larger meaning to these memorials and there isn't supposed to be one. A hundred years from now they will be nothing more than giant pools surrounded by trees without nothing to say.  These new memorials are not about teaching us to remember... but about helping us to forget.

To find a memorial that actually in some way addresses what happened on September 11. you would have to leave New York to go across the river to New Jersey where the much maligned Teardrop hanging between a torn tower at least represents something concrete, even if it is more grief and pain. Unlike the useless winged shapes of the Staten Island Memorial and the Pentagon Memorial, it at least acknowledges that something terrible happened here and transforms into a symbolic image.

Later this month the Palestinian Authority intends to seek unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state from the United Nations. This Palestinian initiative rejects direct negotiations, violates past peace commitments, and risks renewed violence. And its appeal to the U.N. has nothing whatsoever to do with peace. It is simply a continuation of the Palestinian campaign to increase the international isolation and delegitimization of Israel. It must be defeated!

President Obama and members of his administration have indicated that the U.S. will veto any such resolution brought before the UN Security Council. But we need your help to ensure that President Obama will follow through on this commitment. Please urge President Obama to veto the resolution at the UN Security Council.

There is a disturbing report that the White House has overruled the Pentagon and is dramatically speeding up America's withdrawal from Iraq.

There are 45,000 American troops in Iraq. According to Fox News, "The generals on the ground had requested that the number of troops remaining in Iraq at the end of the year reach about 27,000." But there was "major push back" over the "political optics" of leaving a large force in Iraq. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reportedly insisted that at least 10,000 troops remain, but the Obama White House appears to have settled on just 3,000 troops.

This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attack on our nation by a terrorist cell of Islamic fascists. (If you were young and do not have a crystal-clear memory of that event, I suggest you link to our 9/11 retrospective page.)

It was a modern "date which will live in infamy" as Franklin Roosevelt said in regard to the attack on Pearl Harbor 60 years earlier. The two most significant similarities between Pearl and 9/11 are that we were wholly unprepared for both, and a like number of Americans were murdered.

After eight years of national security malfeasance under Bill Clinton's administration, and eight months of the newly installed George W. Bush administration's efforts to reorder national security priorities, only a handful of Americans were convinced that a deadly enemy had coalesced in our midst. Indeed, a well-organized terrorist cell had settled into American suburbs in the last years of Clinton's watch.

However, before noon on 9/11, it was tragically clear to all Americans that our vital national interests -- both the security of our homeland and the stability of our allies abroad -- were under assault. An enemy had declared war on the United States, and it was an asymmetric enemy better organized and more lethal than ever before.

Why were we so blatantly unprepared?

In 2001, the U.S military had been severely downsized with the Justice Department and CIA operating under very restrictive Clinton budgets and mandates. Clinton's final national security policy directive (in December 2000) did not mention "al-Qa'ida" once in its 45,000-word text, and mentioned "Osama bin Laden" only four times. The directive remains a self-incriminating document that lays bare the Clinton administration's "strategy" of swatting flies -- of lobbing the occasional cruise missile at a nearly empty building (excepting for poor janitors) and of treating terrorists as mere "fugitives" who should be extradited to "answer for their crimes."

Michael Scheuer, former CIA chief of the team responsible for hunting Sheik Osama bin Laden, confirmed with great disdain that SpecOps had not one but two opportunities to kill OBL before 9/11. With bin Laden literally in their sights, however, Clinton pulled the plug on both operations.

Fortunately, President George W. Bush was decisive both in identifying our enemy and in responding. "This nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation," the president said, in preparation for launching the Global War on Islamic Terrorism.

Global indeed. The Patriot Post coined the term "Jihadistan" to refer to the borderless nation of Islamic extremists that constitutes al-Qa'ida and other Muslim terrorist groups around the world.

Within days of 9/11, Bush specifically identified OBL and his Taliban support network as the perpetrators of the attack, and within three weeks, Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan was underway. OEF-A was followed by OEF campaigns to capture or kill members of al-Qa'ida and other Islamic terrorist groups around the world, including operations in the Philippines, Horn of Africa, Pankisi Gorge, Trans-Sahara regions, Kyrgyzstan, the Caribbean and Central America.

Thus, the advent of Fourth Generation Warfare in the Second Nuclear Age.

Seventeen months and 17 toothless United Nations resolutions later, George Bush finally launched Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On 9/12, there had been grave doubts about whether our nation could prevent another catastrophic attack in the days and weeks ahead -- much less whether the Bush administration could keep the homeland free from major attack for the remaining seven-plus years of Bush's presidency. There were also questions about whether OEF and OIF would be sufficient to contain Jihadi elements.

As noted in The Patriot Post's five-part National Security Primer, our objective has been to keep the battle on our enemy's turf, and keep them off of ours. That was the central theme of the Bush Preemption Doctrine behind OEF and OIF.

Make no mistake: It is not for a lack of Islamo-Fascist will that we have avoided another massive attack; indeed, individual jihadists have, during the first 30 months of the Obama administration, launched a failed Christmas Day airline bombing and a failed Times Square bombing, as well as a successfully murderous assault on Fort Hood. Despite this -- and as affirmed by classified cable traffic regarding interdiction operations -- our Armed Forces, law enforcement and intelligence agencies have established an effective, though certainly not impenetrable, gauntlet against such an attack. We have dodged many bullets over the last decade.

Predictably, the most significant obstacles to our national security during the Bush years came in the form of opposition from bed-wetting pantywaists on the Left. Our enemies have been greatly emboldened by Leftist traitors in Congress and their efforts to undermine President Bush's re-election prospects by politicizing questions about the Iraqi WMD threat while thousands of American combat personnel were in harm's way.

Has Obama emboldened the Jihad Movement? Comment

Second only to the Left's aiding and abetting the enemy is that of their Leftmedia sycophants.

Recall if you will these words, first reported by The Patriot Post: "I say to you: that we are in a battle, and that more than half of this battle is taking place in the battlefield of the media." That quote is part of an intercepted and authenticated communiqué from Osama bin Laden's chief lieutenant, Sheikh Ayman Muhammad al-Zawahiri, to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, before the murderous Zarqawi's termination in June 2006.

A typical example of these enemy sympathizers in the MSM would be the Newsweek magazine cover story proclaiming "We're losing." On page three of that 2006 edition, Newsweek's subtext read: "Winning is no longer a question; it's about avoiding total defeat." The next page offered a teaser from the magazine's former editor, Jon Meacham, in which he asserted, "To say that America is losing in Iraq ... is not unpatriotic. Far from it."

On the infotainment front emerged media sensations like Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and its long list of deceits.

At the end of George Bush's tenure as president, the greatest threat to U.S. national security emerged, a threat from both the enemies domestic and enemies foreign. That threat is in the person of an Islamic sympathizer, Barack Hussein Obama.

Since 9/11, though Western nations have avoided catastrophic attacks, we have certainly not avoided tactical assaults. There have been bloody Islamist assaults against civilians in Moscow, Bali, Spain and the UK. In the U.S., we foiled planned attacks against targets such as Fort Dix and the Manhattan subway, and we were lucky for the incompetence of the aforementioned Christmas Day "underwear" bomber and Times Square car bomber.

The most significant Jihadi assault against the U.S. occurred on 5 November 2009, when Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army psychiatrist, yelled "Allahu Akbar!" as he opened fire, murdering 14 and wounding 29 others at Fort Hood, Texas. That an out-and-out jihadist such as Hassan was allowed in uniform is a testament to political correctness run amok, and to the abject failure of "diversity" policies, especially in our military.

Obama's favored military commanders are more interested in packing the ranks with homosexuals and scrubbing curriculums of any reference to Christianity than focusing on warfighting.

After years of slugging it out with jihadists in Iraq, August of 2011 became the first month since OIF's opening salvo that not a single American combat fatality was recorded there. However, last month in Afghanistan, in the wake of Barack Obama's announcement of his planned withdrawal, we recorded the highest number of combat fatalities there since the launch of OEF-A.

The killing of Osama bin Laden in May, and the subsequent termination of the latest of OBL's chief lieutenants to pop up, Atiyah al-Rahman, has created something of a false sense of security.

But the media tribulations proclaiming we have not been attacked in the 10 years since 9/11 should be tempered by the words of Mark Twain: "Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." Al-Qa'ida may be down, but Islamo-Fascism 2.0 is thriving. The threat of a catastrophic WMD attack on our nation remains very real, as does the threat of local and regional disruptive tactical terrorist assaults. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta may be accurate in his claim "that we have put al-Qa'ida on the path to defeat," but Islamo-Fascism is alive and well.

For an example of our current complacency, look no further than our continued porous southern border, or consider our Transportation Security Administration, which performs body searches on grandmothers and infants rather than conducting terrorist profiling.

We are in a Long War against a formidable enemy, yet our national security continues to be undermined by competing political agendas. Weak-kneed politicians continue to placate Islamists, even seriously considering the use of our tax dollars to build a mosque just two blocks from the 9/11 memorial.

Setting politics aside, it's instructive to note that terrorist threat vectors against the U.S. have two components: intention and operational capability. To that end, a colleague who is a senior ground ops command officer in Afghanistan sent me his opinion from enemy territory this morning: "Jihadi extremism is a virus, or maybe a genetic mutation. I'm not optimistic that we'll see it checked in our lifetimes. The odds of anyone pulling off another 9/11 are pretty slim, but they'll find something equally shocking to do soon enough. The path Pakistan is on should give us all pause. Jihadis have the will and I think it's a matter of when, not if, they will obtain the means (WMD). And they are determined to use it."

So are we safer today? Yes.

Are we safe today? No!

We must take concrete steps to overcome the bureaucratic impediments to effective national security, not the least of which is gutting the bloated Department of Homeland Security. Moreover, we need to remain vigilant as citizens -- and maintain a reasonable level of knowledge and individual preparedness in order to respond and recover from the next catastrophic attack -- and there is one in the plans just over the horizon.

NASCAR Drivers "Too Busy" To Visit With Auto Industry Destroying President. (DUH!)

An article,   (Sept. 2, 2011), in something called the SB Nation, about a Presidential invitation extended to a group of NASCAR drivers, bemoaning the fact that 5 of the group have declined the invitations, citing scheduling conflicts.

The writer,  Jeff Gluck, is beside himself, stating in a snarky manner that these drivers must be very busy, not to want to meet with the leader of the "Free World", and implying they should do so regardless of political affiliation.

He states that any sponsors or other appointments they may have should be rescheduled, because, (and he uses italics because he is SOOO right), we're talking about the president of the United States.

Mr. Gluck goes so far as to throw the patriotism of NASCAR as a whole into the mix, claiming a reaction like this from American citizens is, in his word, "strange."

Out of Tune and Out of Touch  by Newt Gingrich

When I first read last week about dozens of federal agents descending on an admired American business with automatic weapons drawn, I thought the story was bizarre.

When I learned that what prompted this attack was the Justice Department's interpretation of an Indian law, in a way that even India doesn't interpret it, I could hardly believe it was true.

The government's actions are so outside normal behavior, so lacking in common sense and such an outrage against the freedom of every American that it sounds like a scene from a dystopian novel.

The Obama Administration is engaged in a vendetta against the Gibson Guitar Company of Nashville and Memphis, Tenn.

Gibson Guitar makes very high quality guitars and attracts customers and tourists from all over the world.

Amazingly, this was the second assault on this small business. In 2009, federal agents seized six guitars, which they have not returned despite filing no charges in the investigation.

It is so bizarre it bears repeating. In 2009, armed federal agents seized six guitars.

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, during the most recent government assault on Gibson Guitar there were three dozen Australian tourists watching big government attack a small company.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service apparently believes Gibson made inappropriate use of foreign wood under a 1900 law designed to ban materials illegally exported from other countries.

Gibson Guitar maintains it has papers from Madagascar in 2009 and India in 2011 proving the wood from both countries is legal, but hasn't been given the opportunity to defend itself in court since the government has filed no charges.

There were apparently 26 armed federal agents assaulting Gibson Guitar in pursuit of endangered wood.

The Obama administration could use 26 armed agents to 1) help control the border; 2) fight drug cartels; or 3) hunt down terrorists.

But given the hard left bias of President Obama and his appointees, endangered wood from India was a higher priority. 

With 14 million Americans unemployed and another 11 million underemployed or dropped out of the work force, the Obama Administration is trying to pressure Gibson Guitar into moving its wood-finishing jobs offshore.

Gibson Guitar's CEO Henry Juszkiewicz has said that federal agents actually told Gibson its problems would go away if the company just moved its operations to Madagascar.

This is beyond ideology.

It is insanity.

Congress should investigate these bizarre events and the Obama appointees responsible for the abuse should lose their jobs.

The Reagan Library Debate

Last night's GOP debate was a more lively exchange than past gatherings. Perry and Romney threw a few elbows and all the candidates appeared well prepared. It was abundantly clear that any of those candidates would be better equipped to lead this nation than the current occupant of the Oval Office.

Newt Gingrich once again demonstrated his intellect and keen grasp of history. He rightly chastised the liberal moderators for trying to set traps for the candidates, and he reminded everyone that all the candidates are united in their opposition to the Obama agenda. Rhetorically, Newt probably carried the night. But strong debate performances alone won't win him the nomination.

Michele Bachmann also did a great job. Her answers were direct, succinct and clearly conservative.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, whom I like a lot, went into last night's debate as the front-runner and quickly realized the danger of being in the lead. At one point Perry remarked that he felt like the "piñata at the party" as everyone was swinging at him.

When asked about his vision of Social Security, Perry may have provided ammunition for his opponents. Perry had to have known that Social Security was going to come up. Karl Rove and Dick Cheney had earlier criticized his view that Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme." Some Obama strategists believe they can win in 2012 if they scare America's seniors. I believe that if the election is about Obama's economic mess, we win. If it is about the GOP "ending" Social Security, we lose.

While Perry was right to stand by his belief that the program is flawed, he needed to say more to reassure the millions of Americans who rely on it that he wouldn't abolish the program. To win the White House, Perry will need the votes of tens of millions of senior citizens. He cannot be seen as the candidate who wants to "starve granny."

I urge the Perry campaign to address this issue forcefully in the days and weeks ahead. Perry is right -- the status quo is unacceptable. But millions of Americans depend on it. What is Perry's plan to save Social Security? He has a model to look to in his home state.

The next president will have to deal with entitlement reform, and the nation is focused on our fiscal crisis right now like never before. This may be a unique opportunity for Perry or any of the GOP candidates to seize the moment and explain how he or she will be the candidate of real hope and change, growth and opportunity.

Not surprisingly, I think the "Goofy Award" for the craziest performance goes to Rep. Ron Paul. Paul said several things that were bizarre. But his implication that Americans who believe in border security would turn us into East Berlin took the prize.

When discussing the border fence, Paul said, "I think this fence business is designed and may well be used against us and keep us in. ... So, every time you think of fence keeping all those bad people out, think about those fences maybe being used against us, keeping us in." Really, Ron? You believe a border fence may be used to imprison Americans who want to escape?

The Green Jobs Scam

Climate change also came up at last night's debate. Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman embraced the notion that the science is settled, while Governor Perry disputed that claim. Moreover, Perry pushed back against the left's solutions, such as cap and trade, that would limit economic growth and destroy jobs.

On this one, put me solidly in Perry's camp. Even if he did support Al Gore years ago, he knows enough about the importance of energy to our economy to understand that Gore's snake oil solutions are simply socialism in disguise. But don't take my word for it. Even the New York Times admitted that cap and trade is a massive redistribution of wealth scheme.

With all due respect to Governor Huntsman, the science simply is not settled. Forty years ago, climate scientists were warning of an impending ice age. Now it's man-made global warming. But what about the warming on Mars? I'm pretty certain my SUV is not responsible for that. In fact, the latest evidence once again confirms common sense -- that big, bright, hot, yellow ball in the sky called the sun really is the major influence in the solar system.

But for the sake of argument, let's concede the point for a moment. Even if the planet really does have a fever, the left still doesn't have the solution. Alternative energy simply cannot supply all the demands of our economy. If you cap the use of fossil fuels, the tradeoff is less economic growth. And the economics of this are settled.

Exhibit A -- The Recession. While pushing for his cap and trade bill in 2009, Sen. John Kerry indirectly embraced the recession. Kerry said, "Let me emphasize something very strongly as we begin this discussion. The United States has already this year alone achieved a 6 percent reduction in emissions simply because of the downturn in the economy, so we are effectively saying we need to go another 14 percent." So take it from John Kerry -- lower emissions equals a shrinking economy.

Exhibit B -- Subsidies. As the saying goes, money speaks, and the subsidies for alternative energy speak volumes. Alternative fuels are tremendously expensive, and receive approximately 80% of all federal energy subsidies. When evaluated on the basis of the amount of energy produced, "renewable subsidies are 49 times greater than fossil fuel subsidies."

Exhibit C -- The Green Jobs Myth. Barack Obama spent billions of your hard-earned tax dollars in his stimulus bill to create so-called "green jobs." The White House claims that "225,000 clean energy jobs were either created or preserved" through the stimulus bill. That's $355,000 per job. The rest have apparently gone to China. Here and here.

Recently, Solyndra, a stimulus-funded solar panel company, declared bankruptcy. Last year, Obama visited the company and hailed it as the "future of clean energy." Like so many of Obama's promises, Solyndra went bust.

Today it is being reported that the FBI has raided the company's headquarters. It's not immediately clear why, but it may have something to do with the fact that several of the companies big investors and top executives made repeated trips to the White House to lobby for more than half a billion dollars of your money. As it turns out, one of them was a major Democrat donor who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Obama's campaign.

Let's hope today's news puts an end to the "green jobs" scam.


2012 Update

• The bad news for Barack Obama just keeps coming. According to Gallup, Obama's approval rating averaged just 41% during August, making it "the lowest monthly job approval rating of his presidency to date."
  
  Moreover, Gallup notes that Obama's approval rating with white voters has fallen to just 33%, down 25 points since his inauguration. Of course the left will blame that on racism. But the president's numbers among Hispanics are worse -- down 27 points from 75% in 2009, to 48% today.
• A new poll from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a must win state for Obama, finds that 52% of Pennsylvanians do not believe the president deserves reelection. Just 41% say he does.
  
  In addition, the poll finds that 32% of Democrats and 61% of independents feel it is "time for a change" in the White House. And get this -- even 59% of UNION households say change is needed in the White House.

Want to Help Job Creation? Don't Forget to Repeal Obamacare

There is an obvious omission from all the previews of the President's upcoming speech on jobs: Obamacare.

Obamacare is perhaps the most damaging of the Administration's policies that are impeding the country's recovery. At a time when there should be a focus on cutting spending, reducing regulation, and lowering taxes, Obamacare does the complete opposite. It spends more, imposes costly new mandates and regulations, and raises taxes on individuals and businesses. This is no way to get the economy up and running again.

More Spending. While proponents argue that Obamacare reduces the deficit, those assertions are made based on typical Washington smoke-and-mirrors accounting gimmicks. The harsh reality is that Obamacare spends $1.4 trillion over the next 10 years to expand an already struggling Medicaid program ($627 billion) and create a costly new subsidy entitlement ($777 billion).

Costly Mandates and Regulations. Obamacare imposes a penalty on employers with over 50 employees that do not offer government-qualified health insurance. This provision will hurt job creation, especially in the small business sector, where the economic incentive will be to stay under 50 employees. Moreover, since the health care law was written in such haste, many of the specifics await regulatory instructions, including what qualifies as a government-approved plan, leaving businesses with greater economic uncertainty.

Higher Taxes.

Obamacare imposes nearly $500 billion in new taxes on individuals and businesses over the next 10 years. They include a 2.3percent excise tax on medical devices, $28 billion in new "fees" on brand name drug manufacturers, a new tax on investment income for couples earning over $250,000 a year, and annual premium taxes on health insurance policies that start at $8 billion in 2014, grow to $14.3 billion in 2018, and will continue to escalate based on premium growth (that is, faster than general inflation) every year thereafter.   Exclusion of Prayer at 9/11 Service Ignores Role of Religion in America

 

This weekend will be filled with somber memorial services and poignant tributes as the nation commemorates the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The annual memorial service in New York City will have

a decidedly non-religious tone

, a decision that has drawn the ire of many faith leaders. Even former Mayor Rudy Giuliani

criticized the exclusion of clergy-led prayer at the service

.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration is defending the decision to exclude formal participation by religious leaders at Ground Zero this Sunday, arguing that there are simply too many important faith traditions to provide an adequate representation of each in the service. As former New York City deputy mayor Rudy Washington notes, however, the city held a very successful interfaith "Prayer for America" event in Yankee Stadium just a few days after September 11 that acknowledged the important role faith plays in providing solace and hope to victims' families.

Critics of the decision point out the constitutionality of allowing prayer at a public memorial and suggest that exclusion of such disregards the place of religion in American history and tradition. Some religious leaders also argue that excluding religious elements from the service ignores the profound role the faith community played in the aftermath of September 11, providing not only spiritual and emotional comfort to first responders and victims' families, but also physical assistance in relief and rescue efforts.

Mayor Bloomberg's decision not to include religious elements in the memorial service is a reversal from his effective defense of the World Trade Center cross, which was included in a permanent display at the city's 9/11 Museum and Memorial a few weeks ago. In that instance, Mayor Bloomberg noted that since the religious symbol "clearly influenced people" and "gave them strength," it should be included in the nation's remembrance of September 11.

Prayer and religious observance hold a prominent place in American history and culture. As the nation commemorates the tragedy of September 11, the nation should remember - not exclude or dismiss - the important role religious faith played in providing comfort and hope that day and the role it continues to play in helping maintain a healthy civil society.

 In order for America to emerge from our economic doldrums, we need businesses and entrepreneurs to make efficient and effective allocations of capital.  We need smart and industrious individuals to drive job creation.  And we need government to get out of the way.  Unfortunately, President Obama's National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has another vision for America.  They want to keep bureaucrats between job creators and new investments.

One example of this intervention is what the NLRB is trying to do to Boeing.  We all know the story by now.  Boeing's new Dreamliner airplane is a great success story.  So many airlines want to buy them that the company is expanding its production facilities.  In addition to adding jobs at its unionized plant in Washington State, Boeing decided to build a new facility in South Carolina, a Right to Work state with lower labor costs and friendlier business climate.  Shockingly, the NLRB ruled this was an "unfair labor practice" and ordered Boeing to abandon the new facility in South Carolina.  

Government should never be empowered to make these kinds of decisions.  Thankfully, there is a bill (H.R. 2587 (http://www.kintera.org/c.5oJELSPwFhJWG/b.6074229/k.B7C2/Bills/siteapps/advocacy/BillDetails.aspx?b=6074229&c=5oJELSPwFhJWG&BillID=1150407)) in Congress to stop the NLRB from telling businesses where they can locate.  It's sad that we need a bill to protect such a basic freedom, but we do.

GM's China sales hit record for August

Maybe China will bail them out next

US auto giant General Motors said its sales in China hit 205,885 units in August -- a record for the month -- up 13.4 percent from a year ago due to strong growth in passenger car purchases.

The record figure comes despite government moves earlier this year to phase out incentives such as tax breaks for small engine vehicles, originally implemented to ward off the impact of the global financial crisis.

Facing a frustrated public and a skeptical Congress, President Barack Obama will pitch at least $300 billion in jobs proposals aimed at getting Americans back to work quickly and forcing Republicans to take a share of the responsibility for solving the country's economic woes.
