Beck Blasts Boehner After Rep. Walsh Says House Members Banned From Israel Event

The Blaze | by Madeleine Morgenstern | Posted on August 18, 2011 at 5:25pm

Glenn Beck had some strong words for House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) Thursday after Rep. Joe Walsh said a group of congressmen that wanted to attend next week's Restoring Courage event in Israel were barred from doing so by the House Ethics Committee.

Speaking on Beck's radio program, the Illinois Republican said the International Israel Allies Caucus Foundation was going to sponsor a mission for several representatives to go to Israel, meet with officials and join Beck at the event.

THESE PHOTOS JUST BECAME DECLASSIFIED - FROM 9/11

The anniversary of 9/11 is coming up.  We must never forget what happened and who was responsible.  The threat is still with us of more destruction to come.  Those radical islamist tell us so all the time.  We all seem to dismiss it.  We must press our Congress to look into all those who may be amongst us now training and getting ready to launch another attack.  We must never allow a mosque to built any where near that sacred ground.  Please be at the rally on 9/11 as the Mayor has given approval for the mosque to be built.

We the people must rise up and say NO!

Press Release:

AFDI/SIOA 9/11 Freedom Rally:

Stand Against Ground Zero Mosque, and Durban III, Stand for America

NEW YORK, July 6: The human rights organization American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) will be hosting its second annual 9/11 Freedom Rally on September 11 at 3pm at Park Place and West Broadway.

Free citizens are coming from all over the U.S. to attend the rally. "It is crucial to stand for freedom on this tenth anniversary of the heinous 9/11 jihad attacks," said AFDI Executive Director Pamela Geller. "We must show the jihadists we are unbowed in the defense of freedom."

AFDI and its Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) program are encouraging all Americans to stand against the Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero and the anti-Semitic Durban III conference that will be held in New York City at the same time, and for American values on the tenth anniversary of the worst attack ever on American soil.

The confirmed list of speakers includes 9/11 family members Alexander and Maureen Santora, who lost their firefighter son Christopher; Sally Regenhard, whose son Christian was killed on 9/11; Nelly Braginsky, who lost her son Alexander; and others.

Other speakers include former U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton (video message); the courageous ex-Muslim human rights activist Wafa Sultan; war hero and North Carolina Congressional candidate Ilario Pantano; former prosecutor and bestselling author Andrew C. McCarthy; popular radio host Joyce Kaufman; Darla Dawald, National Director of the Patriot Action Network; James Lafferty of the Virginia Anti-Sharia Taskforce (VAST); Coptic Christian activist Joseph Nassralla; Iraqi ex-Muslim Paul Gaynos.

Hosting the rally are Pamela Geller, publisher of the acclaimed AtlasShrugs.com blog, executive director of AFDI and SIOA, and author of Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance (WND Books); and AFDI/SIOA associate director Robert Spencer, the bestselling author and director of Jihad Watch.

Building the Ground Zero mosque is not an issue of religious freedom, but of resisting an effort to insult the victims of 9/11 and to establish a beachhead for political Islam and Islamic supremacism in New York. Cordoba Initiative board member imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is an open proponent of Sharia, Islamic law, a system that denies the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law. Given the thousands of triumphal mosques that have been built on the cherished sites of conquered peoples throughout Islamic history, the mosque leaders' claim that this mosque would be understood differently by Muslims worldwide lack foundation.

The Durban III conference follows upon two previous conferences that scapegoated and demonized the state of Israel in service of Islamic jihad and Islamic supremacist interests. The rally will defend Israel against the defamation to which it will be subjected at this conference. It will also call upon the city to remove roadblocks to the reconstruction of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on 9/11 and since then mired in bureaucratic red tape that has prevented its rebuilding - in stark contrast to the help Mayor Bloomberg and other city officials have given to the Ground Zero Mosque project.

AFDI/SIOA is one of America's foremost organizations defending human rights, religious liberty, and the freedom of speech against Islamic supremacist intimidation and attempts to bring elements of Sharia to the United States.

Restoring Courage - Jerusalem 2011

"We have gone to the capitals of our states and to the capitals of our government.  We have talked to all the power brokers.  The only power broker, the only seat of government that can and will solve this problem with or without us is God.  It is time to return inside the walls that surround Jerusalem and stand with people of all faiths, all around the world," Glenn said in his initial announcement.

"In August, whether I'm there with seven people or 10 people or there alone, I will stand.  I ask you to join me.  I also ask you to take this message globally, to take this to every corner of the earth.  If you have family living overseas, this is not an America solution.  This is a people of faith solution.  This is a people all over the world solution.  I ask you to help get this word out."

Glenn Beck Restoring Courage Viewing Party : On Wednesday, August 24 we will be streaming the event at The Moose and we're inviting everyone to come down and share this together.  Many of us went to the Restoring Honor event last year and we were deeply moved by the day's events.  Being with others we know made this even more special.  Although we are not going to travel to Israel, we are hoping that we can recreate that atmosphere here in Bucks County.  We are still in the development stages of this event and would like to hear your suggestions on how to have it work out.  And if you can help with the planning, set up and the break down, please let us know.  These events are even more special when you are part of the effort to make it come off well for everyone who comes.  Be sure to invite your friends and family to come as well.  This would be a great opportunity to meet other patriots and meet some new ones.

Let us know you are coming on our Facebook event post .

Talk-Radio's Dom Giordano To Receive ZOA's Ben Hecht Award

Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,

Tickets are now available for Philadelphia ZOA's First Tribute Gala on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at the Hilton Philadelphia on City Avenue, as we honor talk-radio giant Dom Giordano and beloved Rabbi Fred Kazan.

Do not miss what will be a memorable event locally for the pro-Israel community in our area.

Jewish community pillar Gary Erlbaum will be master of ceremonies as we honor Dom with the Ben Hecht Award for Outstanding Journalism for his honest and forthright support of Israel, and Rabbi Kazan for his lifelong devotion to the Jewish State of Israel with our Guardian of Israel Award. Jonathan Tobin of Commentary and former executive editor of the Jewish Exponent will be guest speaker, and there will be remarks from our own great ZOA National President Morton Klein.

Of course, there will also be delicious glatt-kosher food, a festive and warm evening and the opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate Israel.

Philadelphia ZOA has set up a special ticket hotline so that you can be a part of this evening. Call 215-333-1729 to order tickets, or contact us by email at a special email address: zoadom@yahoo.com . Or if you would like, a copy of the invitation and response card is attached to this email. Simply print it out and return it to: ZOA-GPD, P.O. Box 45604, Phila., PA 19149.

There is no one else in local media who matches Dom when it comes to standing up for Israel, patriotism and integrity. Dom has taken on guests and callers on 1210 AM WPHT Radio who distort the facts about Israel, and he goes out of his way to speak truthfully about the Arab war against the Jews because it is the right thing to do.

Rabbi Kazan has been a fervent champion of Israel and has inspired generations of local Jews to have a place in their heart for the Jewish State. Whether it be currently at Historic Congregation Kesher Israel where he is religious leader, or Temple Adath Israel where he is Rabbi Emeritus, or at Beth Sholom where he served, or during his tours of Jewish Philadelphia he leads, he has been a proponent for Israel.

It is the duty of all who care about Israel to thank and show appreciation for stalwarts of Israel as we lest not take such support for granted. In our area, we must come out to publicly thank Dom Giordano and Rabbi Kazan.

We look forward to seeing you the evening of Sept. 8.

The Doctrine of Abrogation: Open the Koran Day

It's time to sign up!

Earlier this year we announced a major event for this fall, "The Doctrine of Abrogation: Open the Koran Day."

We have scheduled this event for the weekend of October 28 - 30, 2011, which is close to the two year anniversary of the Ft. Hood jihadist massacre perpetrated by Major Nidal Hasan (pictured at right).

RedState Morning Briefing

For August 19, 2011

1. An Open Letter to Anyone Who Thinks Obama Should Not Go On Vacation

Dear People Who Think Obama Should Not Go On Vacation:

Are you out of your ever living mind?!?!?!

Have you not seen what destruction on our economy and morale this man has wrought for three years?!?!

And you want him to go back to Washington, D.C.? Congress too? You are out of your mind.

The correct answer is STAY ON VACATION ALL OF YOU. The stock market tends to do better when Congress is gone. The world tends to run fine when this President is on vacation. Our freedoms cannot be further encroached while Obama is in Martha's Vineyard.

Please, stop asking this man to come back to Washington where everything he touches tends to break down.

When he comes back in September he says he will have a plan to create jobs. The last several plans he had to create jobs killed or destroyed more private sector jobs than even the most radical leftist could have hoped for. Please, please, please stop saying he needs to come back to Washington.

Mr. President, you take as much vacation as you want. In fact, if you want to leave the country and go visit your relatives in Kenya or just go for a safari or go see your old stomping grounds in Indonesia or, heck, take the family to see penguins in Antarctica or even go to Bora Bora, I'd be glad to have you take say . . . the next twelve months off.

And even better, I'm sure we can find some people to fund your vacation other than the American taxpayers who you've been using to fund your political campaign bus tour.

2. Rick Perry Insensitive to Barack Obama's Feelings!

Governor and new Presidential candidate Rick Perry (R, TX), on his priority levels:

"...if I hurt the president's feelings, well, with all due respect, I love my country and I love future generations more than I care about his feelings."

To give the context: the White House has been taking the opportunity offered by Perry's entrance to the race to take slaps at the candidate. As Glenn Reynolds noted at the time, this was not a particularly smart strategy... which is something that I've come to agree with, and I'll tell you why.

3. The FTC's Internet Kill Switch

Bureaucrats at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are pursuing a heavy-handed regulatory approach to address vague concerns about consumers' online privacy. They claim that privacy is threatened by a shadowy group of advertisers who are harvesting your data from behind the screen to sell you more stuff. While I don't discount the agency's good intentions to protect consumers, FTC activists have supported regulations that would threaten the lifeblood of the Internet: data.

4. A Primer For Union Members: How Not To Be Burned During A Union Strike

Back in the day, before Darth Vader saw the light at the end of the movie and when strikes were more prevalent than they are today, there was a time when union bosses conditioned their members for the eventuality that negotiations could break down and union members might be on strike-for a long, long time.

5. The Horserace for August 18, 2011

Tim Pawlenty is out of the race. Rick Perry is in the race. Not only is Perry in, he is surging to first place in the Rasmussen polling. But it is still Mitt Romney's race to lose right now.

The race is beginning to find some momentum of its own. Rick Perry's entry was not a Fred Thompson entry as some expected. He is dominating the conversation and forcing both Democrats and Republicans to respond to him. Whether he can keep it up and whether it blows back on him will be interesting to see moving forward.

Today, we have to spend time weeding out candidates, which will make some of you mad. Also, we'll deal with Paul Ryan and Chris Christie.

Below the fold, the horse race gallops ahead.

Destroy a liberal's argument by exposing the underlying rhetorical cheat.

NO. 3.
The motive fallacy. This is a common technique used by liberals to dismiss facts that don't suit their argument. For example: "Well I'm not going to believe anything X says about this. X is funded by Exxon." Simply point out that just because somebody has a reason to believe something doesn't necessarily mean what he believes is not true. As philosopher Jamie Whyte puts it: "A man may stand to gain a great deal of peace and quiet from telling his wife that he loves her. But he really may love her nevertheless."

Surprise! Obama is Investigating S&P After the Obama Downgrade
By Ben Johnson, The White House Watch

Less than two weeks after Standard & Poor's issued the historic first U.S. credit downgrade, the Justice Department confirmed Wednesday it is investigating the ratings agency over the method it used to rate mortgage securities in the years before the 2008 financial downturn.

The Associated Press notes "it was unclear" whether the other two major ratings agencies, Moody's Investors Service and Fitch Ratings, are under investigation for similar wrongdoing. Taking no chances, Fitch reaffirmed America's AAA credit rating just one day earlier.

The investigation has the appearance of retribution. The New York Times reports....

Video: Joe Wilson Was Right! Obama Funds Health Care for Illegal Immigrants
By Judson Berger, FoxNews.com

Nearly two years after he infamously accused President Obama of lying about his health care overhaul, Republican Rep. Joe Wilson claims he was right all along.

The South Carolina congressman was pilloried in 2009 for shouting "You lie!" at the president in the middle of a national address after Obama claimed the health care bill would not cover illegal immigrants.

But Wilson is claiming some vindication after the Health and Human Services Department awarded millions to "migrant and seasonal farm worker" health care -- a spokeswoman in the department was cited last week saying patients would not be asked about....

Obama Could Learn from Reagan
By Michael Reagan, FloydReports.com

If President Obama really wants to get the U.S. economy going again, he could do worse than to study the results of my Dad's 1981 Economic Recovery Act, which boosted the economy by leaps and bounds.

Take the matter of jobs, for example. Thanks to the 1981 act, an astounding 20 million new jobs were created. Moreover, inflation dropped from 13.5 percent in 1980 to a mere 4.1 percent by 1988, and unemployment fell from 7.6 percent to 5.5 percent.

Moreover, the net worth of families earning between $20,000 and $50,000 annually grew by 27 percent. At the same time, the real gross national product jumped....

Eric Holder Requests "Fast and Furious" Documents from Issa for an "Independent" Investigation
By Matthew Boyle, The Daily Caller

New details about Operation Fast and Furious cast doubt on the ability of the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General to conduct an "independent" and fair investigation, congressional Republican investigators say.

The information comes via a letter Sen. Chuck Grassley and Rep. Darrell Issa sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday. In it, they question a request from Holder for a transcript from a meeting they held in secret on July 4th with Ken Melson, acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Holder apparently told Issa and Grassley he was....

The attack took place while Republican members of the U.S. Congress were visiting Israel.

Israel retaliated swiftly. The Jerusalem Post reports:

Israel's response to the terror attacks from the Sinai Peninsula came swiftly Thursday evening when the Israel Air Force bombed the southern Gaza Strip, killing the leadership of the Popular Resistance Committee (PRC), who had orchestrated the attacks.

At least seven Israelis, including a soldier from the Golani Brigade, were killed earlier in the day in a multiple-stage attack carried out by PRC members who infiltrated into Israel from Egypt.

The PRC terrorists killed in the retaliatory IAF airstrike included the head of the terror group Kamal Nirab, who the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) said, personally directed and planned the attack.

Another terrorist killed in the strike was identified as Amas Hamed, commander of the PRC's military wing and a resident of Rafah. The Shin Bet said that Hamed was involved in the abduction of Gilad Schalit over five years ago and oversaw numerous terror attacks against Israel including suicide bombings and rocket attacks.

Morning Bell: Never Quit

Next month, America will honor the anniversary of September 11, 2001, when terrorists  killed nearly 3,000 of our fellow citizens. In the days after 9/11, Americans stood together as one, setting aside partisan fervor and recognized a common enemy in Islamist terrorist groups, particularly al-Qaeda. National security was rightfully restored as our nation's highest priority.

Ten years later, Osama bin Laden is dead, delivering to victims' families and the rest of America a bit of justice for the heinous acts we all witnessed. But one terrorist's death does not justify returning to the national security mindset that existed prior to that day.

As Thomas Paine said, "Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it."

Vicious Cruelty to Animals Central to Militant Islam

by Bill Levinson

Canine Cruelty By Our 'Afghan Allies' reports how militant Muslims engage in sadistic cruelty to dogs, which they justify by calling dogs "unclean." From where we sit, militant Muslims resent dogs because of dogs' obvious superiority and greater utility to Civilization.

Wylie, the Afghan mutt, was rescued in February by a convoy of British soldiers on patrol in a Kandahar bazaar, where a dog-fighting crowd was beating the smaller dog with lumps of wood to force the last fight out of him.

...Two weeks later Jensz received another call. Local dog fighters had cut off Wylie's ears and had scalped him in the process, before using the same homemade knife to cut his muzzle wide open from his nose to under his eye. He was patched up again by Jensz and a team of Australian Defence Force doctors only to return from his perilous forays outside the base with new injuries - a stab wound to the chest and a savagely docked tail.

Obama Orders Rick Perry to Choose His Words More Carefully

President Obama said GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry has "to be a little more careful" with his rhetoric and says he'll cut the Texas governor some slack for suggesting the Federal Reserve is almost "treasonous."

Danon's 'annexation campaign' set to begin

By GIL HOFFMAN, JPOST

Campaign calling for all of Judea and Samaria to be made part of the sovereign state of Israel to be launched on Facebook.

As the Palestinian Authority prepares to ask the United Nations General Assembly to declare a Palestinian state unilaterally, a pressure campaign will begin Wednesday asking Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to unilaterally annex the West Bank.

The campaign is the brainchild of Likud MK Danny Danon, who has sponsored a bill that would begin the process of making all of Judea and Samaria part of the sovereign state of Israel. The campaign will begin on Facebook, spread to top Israeli websites, and perhaps after that to the streets.

Danon: If Palestinians act unilaterally, so will we

"The campaign will call for the Israeli government to respond to the Palestinians' unilateral step by taking a Zionist unilateral action of annexing the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria,"

The Likud legislator said the campaign was...

1) she wishes to stabilize Israeli-Turkish relations as soon as possible

2) "the deterioration in Jerusalem's ties with Ankara is harming American interests in the region" and

3) it would be difficult for the US to persuade other nations to reject the Palestinians' UN statehood bid in September if Jerusalem refuses to apologize to Ankara.

Where have I heard that before. Pray tell, why are strengthened relations between Turkey and the US dependent on the apology of a third party or why does the absence of an apolgy affect the ability of the US to protect Israel in September.

This pressure is also directed to Barak who has been moved to provide
"goodwill gestures" such as allowing more weapons into Judea and Samaria and more.

The defense establishment also recommended increasing the water supply to the West Bank and Gaza Strip, granting permits for the construction of new...

For Iran, Syria out, Iraq in

With Syria out of the picture, Iran looking to Iraq as its new strategic ally
By Zvi Bar'el, HAARETZ

Iraq, which dropped from the international media radar because of the uprisings in Arab countries, is likely to become the hot spot of regional politics - and soon. While Bashar Assad's regime fights for its life in Syria, Iran will probably seek a strategic alternative in the country that the United States is to exit by the end of the year. "The occupation of Iraq by the U.S. did only good things for Iran," said Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi this week. "Iran became more influential than it ever dreamed."

Iraq is Iran's third largest trading partner after China and the United Arab Emirates, some $8 billion a year and growing. Last month, Iran signed a contract for the construction of a 2,500 kilometer long gas pipeline, which will cross Iraq and connect Iran to Syria. Iran has diplomatic representatives in...

Obama's alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood

By Ted Belman

Barry Rubin recently wrote The revolutionary movement's big split in which he expected the Sunnis, headed by the Muslim Brotherhood to to coalesce in opposition to Shiites lead by Iran. The MB is gaining control over Egypt, Hamas and soon Syria and Jordan.

I wrote to him suggesting that Obama was actively involved with promoting the Brotherhood as a strategy in transforming the Middle East and containing Iran. I have yet to hear from him.

My speculation was recently fuelled by reading Herb London's U.S. Betrays Syria's Opposition

In an effort to understand and placate Syrian opposition groups, Secretary Clinton invited them to a meeting in Washington. Most of those invited, however, have links to the Muslim Brotherhood. Missing from the invitations are Kurdish leaders, Sunni liberals, Assyrians and Christian spokesmen. According to various reports the State Department made a deal with Turkey and Muslim Brotherhood representatives either to share power...

PIPES: White House mischief

Obamans cloak Islamist solicitude as president's popularity plunges

The White House engaged in two furtive gambits last week that painfully exposed the Obama administration's amateurish, deceitful Middle East-Islamic policies. The first case concerned the thorny issue of Jerusalem's legal status in American law. In 1947, the United Nations ruled the holy city to be a corpusseparatum (Latin for separatedbody) and not part of any state. All these years later and despite many changes, U.S. policy holds that Jerusalem is an entity unto itself. It ignores that in 1950, the government of Israel declared western Jerusalem to be its capital and in 1980 it declared the whole of Jerusalem to be the capital. The executive branch even ignores U.S. laws from 1995 (requiring a move of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem) and 2002 (requiring that U.S. documents recognize Americans born in Jerusalem as being born in Israel). Instead, it insists that the city's disposition be decided through diplomacy.

The Not Listening Tour

For a man with such big ears, Barack Hussein Obama isn't actually very good at listening. And a listening tour isn't going to change that.

Listening tours have become an obligatory stage of the early campaign, but their name is another degradation of meaning. Politicians don't conduct listening tours in order to listen to voters, but to have those voters listen to them. The occasional town hall meeting with its exchanges is the verbal version of a Letters to the Editor column. But does anyone pretend that a newspaper exists to listen to the readers?

Selfless euphemisms for selfish agendas clot the language of liberals. A listening tour dresses up the self-seeking campaign as a selfless act. The politician isn't on tour for his own sake, but to listen to you. The left called its totalitarian states, people's republics, when the people had nothing to do with it. And the listening tours have as much to do with listening to people, as the republics did with  being ruled by them.

Michele Bachmann First To Make Illegal Immigration Top Issue for 2012

America's largest political action committee addressing illegal immigration is issuing public thanks to presidential candidate Michele Bachmann for becoming the first candidate of 2012 to make border security and illegal immigration control a top issue.

The Associated Press reports on April 16 that Bachmann made illegal immigration an issue in Greenville, SC as part of her three state tour.

Michele Bachmann is reported to have said "lax enforcement of immigration laws was a threat to the nation's security. She agreed with a town hall questioner at a Greenville stop that U.S. troops should be redeployed from South Korea to south Texas."

The report also states that Bachmann said "The problem has been in our unwillingness to enforce the laws that are on the books." and "How do you solve it? You build a barrier, a fence, a wall - whatever you want to call it. You build it...As president of the United States, every mile, every yard, every foot, every inch will be covered on that southern border."

New Terror Attacks In Israel

A few days ago the Obama Administration condemned Israel for authorizing the building of new homes in East Jerusalem. The White House and State Department said the homes were a threat to peace. Today the Obama Administration was forced to condemn the real threat to peace -- Palestinian jihadists who crossed through Egypt's Sinai Peninsula to launch attacks in southern Israel that killed seven Israelis.

Sadly, this administration condemns the building of homes and the launching of terrorist attacks as if they were both morally reprehensible. Of course they are not.

Building homes for citizens is what normal, law-abiding countries do. Launching unprovoked attacks on civilians traveling in buses and cars is what terror groups do. Being confused about the two is what our State Department does.

Obama's New Plan -- More of the Same

The front page of today's Washington Post offers the first details of what President Obama is expected to announce in his September economic address to the nation. It is, as we assumed, more of the same. Obama is a socialist and he isn't going to change now.

According to the Post, Obama "has decided to press Congress for a new round of stimulus spending..." and "Obama also plans to announce a major push for new deficit reduction, urging the special congressional committee ... to identify even more savings than the $1.5 trillion it has been tasked with finding."

We've seen this play before. Remember how Obama handled the Afghanistan surge? He ordered more troops and then immediately put a time limit on how long they would be there. Obama is, once again, trying to have it both ways -- stimulus spending for the left and greater deficit reduction for the right. This is not leadership; it is a cynical ploy.

Don't be fooled. What Obama is really demanding is higher taxes. How is the super committee supposed to come up with even more deficit reduction when Obama is demanding more spending now? Obama's solution: Raise taxes on "millionaires and billionaires," which in Obamaspeak means you.

Will someone at the White House economic office explain how you can stimulate the economy with $X amount of spending while you are taxing out of the economy $X amount of money? You're not stimulating the economy; you are merely redistributing a shrinking pie.

Meanwhile, the administration continues dragging its feet on something that could help the economy. Thanks to the EPA, 20,000 construction jobs are being delayed because radical environmentalists don't want us using tar sands oil from Canada. This is costing us jobs and perpetuating our energy dependence on hostile foreign regimes.

The Canadians won't wait forever. The Chinese would love to have this oil, and the pipeline can just as easily go west as it can south. President Obama should step in now and tell the "Employment Prevention Agency" to back down. But he won't because the EPA is doing exactly what he wants it to do under the direction of his political appointees.

More Bad News

Today we got more bad news on the economy. European markets posted their biggest one-day drop in three years. Wall Street was down as much as 500 points. Home sales are down. Factory activity fell. And the number of Americans claiming new jobless benefits rose last week to 408,000.

Weekly claims for jobless benefits have been above 400,000 for 18 of the past 19 weeks. During periods of economic growth, we can produce 400,000 jobs a month. Obama is producing 400,000 jobless claims each week! Yet, as long as Obama continues to insist on higher taxes for small business owners and entrepreneurs, they would be foolish to hire anyone else.

With ObamaCare, cap and trade and constant demands for higher taxes, even in the midst of high unemployment, it's no wonder that 71% of Americans disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy!

The Wall Street Journal

What Happened to Obama? Absolutely Nothing.

He is still the same anti-American leftist he was before becoming our president.

It's open season on President Obama. Which is to say that the usual suspects on the right (among whom I include myself) are increasingly being joined in attacking him by erstwhile worshipers on the left. Even before the S&P downgrade, there were reports of Democrats lamenting that Hillary Clinton had lost to him in 2008. Some were comparing him not, as most of them originally had, to Lincoln and Roosevelt but to the hapless Jimmy Carter. There was even talk of finding a candidate to stage a primary run against him. But since the downgrade, more and more liberal pundits have been deserting what they clearly fear is a sinking ship.

Leahy wants to cut aid to elite IDF units

Blogging at the RJC web site, RJC Communications Director Shari Hillman notes:

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is promoting the use of a human-rights amendment he sponsored in 1997 against three elite IDF units.

Haaretz reported:

Leahy, a Democrat and senior member of the U.S. Senate, wants assistance withheld from the Israel Navy's Shayetet 13 unit, the undercover Duvdevan unit and the Israel Air Force's Shaldag unit.

...Leahy, who heads the Senate Appropriations Committee's sub-committee on foreign operations, was the principle sponsor of a 1997 bill prohibiting the United States from providing military assistance or funding to foreign military units suspected of human rights abuses or war crimes. The law also stipulates that the U.S. Defense Department screen foreign officers and soldiers who come to the United States for training for this purpose.

Leahy wants the new clause to become a part of the U.S. foreign assistance legislation for 2012, placing restrictions on military assistance to Israel, particularly to those three units.

...But Omri Ceren at Commentary provides the much-needed back story: this move by Leahy is part of the larger effort to delegitimize Israel:

Human Rights Watch chief Kenneth Roth quickly laid claim to Leahy's new legislation as part and parcel of NGO attacks on the legitimacy of Israel's court system.

The NGO campaign against Israel's court system, in turn, is designed to internationalize the lawfare campaign against Israel. The issue is one of complementarity, a dynamic that NGO Monitor's Anne Herzberg sketched out last June. Anti-Israel partisans want to haul Israeli leaders in front of international kangaroo courts, but they can't do that as long as there's recognition that Israel's court system is, in the words of Spain's Supreme Court, "substantive and genuine." So that's where NGO's are targeting their attacks, and that's why Roth crowed that Leahy's bill was necessary because there's "no investigative system to ensure [Israeli units] aren't abusing rights."

Council on Foreign Relations

Former national security advisor Elliott Abrams writes:

If there is a single issue that explains the failure of Obama policy toward Israel, it is settlements. And this week the administration once again indulged itself in a knee-jerk reaction that displayed incomprehension in a way that harms U.S.-Israeli relations without doing the slightest bit of good for the Palestinians.

This week Israel announced a plan to construct 277 more housing units in Ariel, a settlement that is a town of 18,000. The new units are to be constructed in the center of  the town, it was also announced. This is a significant fact, for construction of new units at the edges of the town would mean that the security perimeter would need to be extended to protect the new housing and the people in it. But this will not happen, and Ariel will expand in population but not in land area. It is not, in the usual Palestinian Authority parlance, "taking more Palestinian land."

...But if the fixation on freezing construction in settlements is no longer the main pillar of Obama policy, those old sentiments and statements linger on. Thus did the announcement that new units were to be built in Ariel evoke a new denunciation from Washington. To be sure, it did not come from the president himself and was a pretty low-key affair; it did not suggest that new a crisis in bilateral relations loomed. But this was a reminder that the administration appears to have learned nothing, and still does not understand the difference between expanding a settlement physically and expanding the population of a settlement by building in already-built-up areas.

Fellow patriots,

When the news on Gov. Rick Perry's Islam-friendly leanings first came in, I waited until I had two independent reports before broadcasting it, with a warning that we needed to start asking questions, but not to rush to judgment.  The next day, this hesitation to condemn Perry was confirmed by a broadcast from Act! for America that claimed there was less than met the eye about Perry's apparent Islamophilia.

Given that Act! for America wants to focus on sounding the alarm about Islamic extremism and not get caught up in political partisanship, I can understand their desire to not rush in and condemn any particular candidate.  They did the same thing regarding Barack Obama's 2008 campaign -- they focused on issues rather than Obama's personal ties to Islam.  The last thing Act! for America needs is a slugfest with a politician who has the power to shut it out or even shut it down.

However, I have personally reviewed the curriculum developed as a joint project between Gov. Perry and "his highness," the Aga Khan, leader of the Ismaili sect of Islam, and discovered that it is indeed a shocking example of Islamic propaganda forced upon unsuspecting students attending Texas public schools.  It's appalling.  To put it in a nutshell, the Islamic perspective of history has been inserted without critique into Texas classrooms.

You have to read the Texas school curriculum for yourself to believe it.  Below the bullet list is information taken directly from the SAN ANTONIO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT's own website (http://www.saisd.net/admin/curric/sstudies/mhcp/mhcproject.html ).  In it, you will find the following (highlighted in red):

  • High praise for Gov. Perry's collaboration with the Aga Khan, leaving no question about Perry's complicity and active support.
  • A thorough whitewashing of the nature and history of Islam that ignores Islam's bloody history while simultaneously portraying the Crusades as a bloody assault on Islamic soil by Christians.

It's enough to make you want to scream: While Islam "spreads" and "extends," presumably in the same way that dew forms on flower petals, Crusaders "wrest political control of the Holy Land form Muslim rulers, damaging the positive relations that had previously existed."  Nowhere is it mentioned that the Crusades were prompted by two crises: (1) the ruthless treatment of Christian pilgrims attempting to see Jerusalem, which was under Muslim control, and (2) Byzantine Emperor Alexius's plea for European knights to help him take back territory that had just been overrun by an invasion of Muslim Turks.
  • A presentation of the Koran and Muhammad that can only be described as open proselytization for Islam in public schools.
  • An idealized portrayal of Cordoba's "multicultural" society that minimizes the oppression and political upheaval that took place under Muslim misrule, which largely brought on its own demise through infighting similar to what we see in the Islamic world today.
  • A bizarrely twisted portrayal of the Islamic world that blames Islam's repression of women on Western Colonialism.  (OWWW! MY BRAIN HURTS!!!)
  • An naked advertisement for the Aga Khan and the Ismaili sect of Islam.  This is particularly dangerous because the Ismailis are a sect of only about 20 - 30 million people -- approximately 2% of the entire Muslim population and therefore not representative of Islam as a whole.  Also, while the Ismailis may portray themselves as relatively modern, they still have an anti-Western historical narrative that portrays the West as colonialist while ignoring Islam's own bloody form of colonialism.  In making overtures to build bridges with one small Islamic sect, Gov. Perry has replaced the Western narrative of history with the narrative of 1.5 billion Muslims who see the West as the enemy.  AND YES, THEY REALLY DO SEE THE WEST AS THE ENEMY, as this curriculum makes clear.

I'm willing to grant Gov. Perry the benefit of the doubt and believe that his actions are the product of naiveté and ignorance, rather than actual hostility to the West.  However, his ignorance is inexcusable, and the damage he has done is immense.  If Barack Obama had imposed such a curriculum on schools we'd be calling for his impeachment.  Therefore it is unconscionable to look the other way when it comes to Perry.  In my opinion, not only should Perry not be President, he should be impeached from the Texas governorship!

Thanks again, Pamela Geller and Debbie Schlussel; you were right!

Muslim Histories and Culture Project

What is the Muslim Histories and Culture Project (MHCP)?

The Muslim Histories and Cultures Project was born out of discussions between His Highness The Aga Khan and Texas Governor Rick Perry during the Summer 2002, when The Aga Khan was in Houston for the dedication of a new Ismaili Center. Both His Highness and Governor Perry agreed on the need for Texans to have a greater understanding of Islamic culture, and subsequently brought UT-Austin President Larry Faulkner into the discussions. Located in the state capital, Faulkner's campus is well positioned to accomplish these goals. A series of meetings followed, with the project ultimately finding a home in UT-Austin's College of Liberal Arts, under the guidance of Dean Richard W. Lariviere, in association with UT Liberal Arts (UT-LA), the college's teacher preparation program.

In April 2004, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and UT-Austin finalized a grant proposal that created the partnership that became known as the Muslim Histories and Cultures Program (MHC). Much has happened since the inception of the partnership. Creation and implementation of a model was of prime importance. MHC recruited and directly trained 80 teachers affecting approximately 15,150 students of World History and World Geography in ten key Texas districts during the two sessions conducted in 2005 and 2006. The purpose is two-fold 1) to fulfill Governor Rick Perry's desire to better educate Texas teachers on Muslim topics and 2) to train teachers to use a cultural lens approach to understanding other cultures. Governor Perry was instrumental in getting this program off the ground.

Session 1: Sources of Tradition

Abstract:

...

The readings from Following Muhammad also examine the Sources of the Islamic tradition, providing a brief overview of the crucial role that Muhammad as Prophet of Islam and the Qur'an, as scripture of Islam, play in defining Muslim religious, social and political consciousness. We will explore each of these sources in greater detail in Sessions Two, Three and Four. The second set of readings, from Historical Atlas of Islam, after a brief summary of foundational beliefs and practices, survey the historical expansion of Arab Muslim imperial rule beyond the Arabian peninsula, covering the period between 600 to 1100 CE. Maps illustrate how the Islamic faith began in the Arabic world but spread to other areas where local culture, geography, language and ethnicity influenced beliefs and practices. The establishment of Arab rule in the Middle East led to the development of trade routes that were controlled by Muslim merchants, bringing in much wealth to the rapidly growing empires. With political and economic expansion, the Arabic language evolved into an international language of administration, culture, learning and commerce. As Arab power extended over more areas in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, non Arab traditions, particularly the Persian and the Greco-Roman, were integrated. The result was a cosmopolitan civilization in which Arabic culture played an important part but in which also participated many different ethnic and religious groups. The historical survey concludes with a brief discussion of the Crusades and the attempts by knights from the Christian kingdoms of the Latin West (including England, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy and France) to wrest political control of the Holy Land from Muslim rulers, damaging the positive relations that had previously existed between Muslims and Eastern Orthodox Christians in the Middle East.

Session 3:The Qur'an: Context & Recitation

Abstract:

The readings selected for Session Three illustrate the role that the Qur'an plays in the lives of Muslims as an oral/aural scripture. While Jews and Christians view their holy books as narratives of divine inspiration that are accessible through the written word, many Muslims interact with and encounter their holy book primarily through the sound of the recited text. The sound permeates every day life in Muslim majority countries as people hear the recited Qur'an in "secular" environments such as markets and shopping malls, over the radio and at a variety of public functions. As such, Muslims are more likely to hear the Qur'an rather than read it. Indeed, it has been said that the majority of the world's Muslims encounter the Qur'an through the ear rather than the eye. Most Muslims believe that the Qur'an embodies God's actual speech in Arabic as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel. Not surprisingly, the oral recited Qur'an is absolutely integral to the believer in incorporating a relationship with the Divine into daily life. Muslims view the beauty and perfection of the Qur'an to be manifest in the sound and imagery that the spoken word emotes in the listener. In fact, believers point to this very perfection of the text as the proof of the prophethood of Muhammad. For many, the notion that the Qur'an is inimitable, that is, no human could possibly have produced anything so perfect, proves that it had to be God who revealed this message to Muhammad.

Session 7:Rise and Reach of Muslim Civilizations

Abstract:

The religion that the Prophet Muhammad preached provided his followers an ethical and moral vision for leading a life of righteousness. By the time of his death in 632, loyalty to Muhammad and Islam also provided an important means for forging solidarity among various Arab tribes who had previously been engaged in petty rivalries and wars against each other. In the eighth and ninth centuries, this social and political solidarity, unifying Arabs, became the backbone of a new Arab empire that stretched from Spain in the west to Central Asia and northwestern India in the east. Initially in the new empire, Islam was the religion of the Arab ruling class, a badge of solidarity and superiority. Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians, who were subjects of new Arab rulers, could maintain their religious practices provided they paid jizya, a tax in tribute in lieu of military service. If non-Arabs converted to Islam, they became mawali, or clients of Arab tribes, thus acknowledging Arab superiority. Over the course of time, however, the discriminatory attitude to non-Arab converts was challenged as the religion was interpreted in much richer and inclusive ways, often tinged with strong mystical hues. Notwithstanding the Arabocentric tendencies in its early history, Arab Islamic civilization came to draw upon the institutions and cultures that already existed in the Middle East, including the rich heritage of the Byzantine-Christian and Persian Sassanian civilizations. Many nomadic Bedouin Arabs were integrated into urban communities inhabiting new cities and towns established by Arab rulers. The Arabic language was transformed into a cosmopolitan language which was used far beyond the geographic borders of Arabia as a language of administration, religion, literature and science. Professor Maria Rosa Menocal writes, "The virtue of this Arab-Islamic civilization (in this as in other things not so unlike the Roman) lay precisely in its being able to assimilate and even revive the rich gifts of earlier and indigenous cultures, some crumbling, others crumbled, even as it was itself being crafted. The range of cultural yearning and osmosis of the Islamic empire in this expansive moment was as great as its territorial ambitions: from the Roman spolia that would appear as the distinctive capitals on the columns of countless mosques to the Persian stories that would be known as The Thousand and One (or Arabian) Nights, from the corpus of translated Greek philosophical texts to the spices and silks of the farthest East. Out of this acquisitive confrontation with a universe of languages, cultures, and people, the Umayyad [Arabs], who had come pristine out of the Arabian desert, defined their version of Islam as one that loved its dialogues with other traditions." (The Ornament of the World, pp. 21-22)

The pluralistic nature of early Islamic civilization was well reflected in the various cultures and traditions represented in the great cities that were built by Muslim rulers and dynasties. Muslim cities such as Cairo, Timbuktu, and Fatehpur Sikri were characterized by plurality which was evident not just in their religious landscapes but also in the arts and the sciences they sponsored. The readings in this Session examine Arab Islamic civilization as it developed in two urban contexts: Baghdad and Cordoba. Founded in 762 by Abu Jafar al-Mansur as the capital of the Abbasid empire, the city of Baghdad was originally called Madinat as-Salaam, the City of Peace. The city reached the apex of its power and reputation in the ninth century when, under the rule of the caliphs al-Mahdi and Harun al-Rashid, it became one of most important economic, political and cultural capitals of the world. One of the highpoints in Baghdad's intellectual life was the Bait al-Hikmah, "The House of Wisdom," founded by the Caliph Maimun in 830. This institution housed hundreds of manuscripts in Greek, Persian, Sanskrit and Syriac many of which translated into Arabic. In some instances, the original texts of important classical works such as Galen's Anatomical Procedures have since been lost and only the Arabic translation survives. Arab scholars, Muslim and non-Muslim, affiliated to this institution did not merely translate works of Western classical antiquity but provided significantly new and original ideas of their own. When the scholarly treatises of these Arab scholars were translated into Latin in the twelfth century they became the basis of a renaissance in Europe, specifically in Arab Spain or al-Andalus.

The city of Cordoba, known as the "bride of al-Andalus," was first made into the administrative, political, military and cultural capital of Arab Spain by the Umayyad ruler Abd al-Rahman I in 756. By the first half of the tenth century, in the reign of Abd al-Rahman III (d.956), its inhabitants numbered half a million including Muslims, Christians and a considerable number of Jews. Although the vast majority of its population was of Spanish origin, a number of Berbers from North Africa lived there as well. In comparison to other European cities of the time, Cordoba was remarkably clean. Its streets well-paved and lighted with its residents well-supplied with water. News of the grandeur of its buildings, its markets and its vibrant cultural life spread far and wide, reaching even Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim, a cloistered nun in Saxony, who called the city "the world's ornament." Cordoba was, above all, an intellectual center symbolized by its many libraries. As a result of the patronage of the Caliphs and the city's economic elite, the city was home to a large group of scholars, both Muslim and non-Muslim, representing different fields of learning such as medicine, philosophy, geography, astronomy and mathematics. The Caliphal library, containing over 400,000 volumes, was constantly growing out of space as new books were added, so that its premises had to be moved five times. Witnesses recount that on one of these moves, it took five days to transport the books on poetry alone! Cordoba's Caliphal library was ranked alongside the libraries of Abbasids in Baghdad and the Fatimids in Cairo as one of the three great libraries in the Muslim world.

The flowering of Cordoba and al-Andalus was made possible by the commingling of languages, religions, foods, clothing, music, songs, styles of architecture within multi-religious and multi-ethnic environment in which many people were bilingual in Arabic, Hebrew, and local Hispano-Latin dialects. Although there were periods in Cordoba's history when religious disputes broke out between communities and non-Muslim populations, particularly Christians, suffered discrimination, yet these instances were exceptional for, overall, Cordoba's rulers tended to tolerate religious and cultural diversity. Certainly in comparison to their European counterparts, they were exemplary in their treatment of religious minorities. Under these favorable circumstances, it is hardly surprisingly that Cordoba became the center of a brilliant Jewish renaissance promoted by the numerous Jewish intellectuals, poets and philosophers, many of whom had accepted Arabic as their language of thought and culture. Miguel Cruz Hernandez observes that "Cultural coexistence of this kind was made possible by religious and legal principles that were far-reaching in their implications even though they were often transgressed in practice. The Andalusian experience was an exceptional moment in history, probably unique in its own time and rarely matched in any other. It's most worthy, notable and creative nature was that co-habitation and coexistence were based on religious and legal principles. Our own era, which prides itself on the liberalism and universality of its ideas, offers few examples to match it." (Unesco Courier, December 1991)

Session 8:Religion, Politics, & Modernity: Competing Visions of Muslim Societies from the 18th & 19th Centuries

Abstract:

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, European economies began to expand as the need for raw materials increased. Political and economic competition forced the establishment of worldwide territorial empires. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the European powers, including Russia (and China) had completed their conquest of almost all Muslim societies. Colonialism drastically changed all aspects of the political, economic, cultural dimensions of the colonized regions. Muslim and European societies were distinctly different in their philosophies toward elites, institutions, and cultures. One of the effects of the new colonial rule was the suspension of the local legal systems and the imposition of the law of the conqueror. The establishment of the new law, however, did not impact all aspects of life in the society. Local customs still prevailed in many aspects of family life and education. Often this resulted in a more strict interpretation of Islamic law, taking away rights previously available to Muslim women.

Session 9: Islamic Modernism

Abstract:

...

In the Indian subcontinent, the Modernist movement arose in the aftermath of the Indian rebellion of 1857-8 when Hindu and Muslim sepoys (soldiers) began a movement to overthrow the power of the British. The British suppressed the rebellion with brutal force, with many Indians losing their lives and/or their property. In this traumatic context arose a Modernist leader, Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817-1898), who was firmly convinced that to make progress in the context of colonial India, the best path for the Muslims to follow was that of absolute and unwavering loyalty to the British. Furthermore, he felt that Muslims should participate fully in the Western-style educational system being established by the British so that they would not become a social and economic underclass. Western thought, he believed, was not in fundamental conflict with Islam, nor was the studying the natural sciences, for there could not be a conflict between the Qur'an - the Word of God - and Nature - the Work of God. In this regard, he advocated a rational and contextual approach to Qur'an interpretation since Islam, according to him, accommodates historical change. To promote his ideas and provide young Muslims with Western-style higher education, he fought for and eventually founded the Anglo-Muhammadan Oriental College, which later became Aligarh Muslim University. Sayyid Ahmad Khan's approach enjoyed the support of several important personalities in Indo-Muslim society and formed the basis of the so-called Aligarh Movement. Among its members were several important literati who wrote Urdu prose and poetry to disseminate their ideas. Most prominent were Altaf Husayn Hali (d. 1914) who wrote the famous poem Madd va gazr-i Islam, "The Ebb and Flow of Islam," in which he contrasts the past glories and achievements of Islamic civilization with the miserable status of Muslims of his time; Nazir Ahmad (d. 1912) a novelist whose writings, such as Mirat al- Arus "The Bride's Mirror," emphasized the need for female education; and Mumtaz Ali whose major work, Huquq al-niswan, "The Rights of Women," advocates complete equality between men and women. Perhaps the most radical of Sir Sayyid's collaborators was Chiragh Ali (d. 1895) who not only dismissed traditional Islamic jurisprudence, but more controversially considered the genre of hadith, accounts of the Prophet's deeds and statements, to be entirely fabricated. A significant intellectual and financial supporter of Aligarh Muslim University was Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III (1877-1957), Imam, or spiritual leader, of the Ismaili branch of the Shia Muslims. Sultan Muhammad Shah utilized his religious authority to institute a social, economic, and educational revolution among his followers that had far reaching consequences, including dramatically improving the status of Ismaili women. For instance, he declared the seclusion of women to be crime, and abolished the practice of veiling among his followers. During his lifetime, Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah held several leadership positions within India's Muslim community organizations representing their interests before the British. In an international context he represented India at the League of Nations, the predecessor to the present-day United Nations, being elected to its presidency in 1937.

Obamacare has suffered a devastating blow. On Friday, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the individual mandate in President Barack Obama's signature health care legislation is unconstitutional. With its ruling, the court affirmed the principle that the Constitution means what it says-Congress does not have unfettered power to force the American people to comply with any and all dictates it creates.

Factsheet: Why America Needs Obamacare Repeal Now

The federal government's argument in favor of Obamacare's individual mandate, in contrast, is without limit-and it's a position that the court strongly rejected:

The government's position amounts to an argument that the mere fact of an individual's existence substantially affects interstate commerce, and therefore Congress may regulate them at every point of their life. This theory affords no limiting principles in which to confine Congress's enumerated power....

The federal government's assertion of power, under the Commerce Clause, to issue an economic mandate for Americans to purchase insurance from a private company for the entire duration of their lives is unprecedented, lacks cognizable limits, and imperils our federalist structure.

The Obama Administration wasted no time in decrying the ruling, reasserting its argument that the individual mandate is constitutional-cleverly calling it an "individual responsibility" provision and hanging its hat on an earlier decision by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals which upheld the law. But the significance of last week's opinion cannot be easily undone with clever wordsmithing, spin-or claims of partisanship, given that one of the authors of the ruling, Judge Frank Hull, was appointed by President Bill Clinton.

The Heritage Foundation's Todd Gaziano and Robert Alt explain what the decision means for the President and for Obamacare's future:

In short, the Obama administration has lost its battle to delay review of the individual mandate until after the 2012 election. Until today, there was at least a chance that the Supreme Court would pass on the case until after its forthcoming term, but now, with a split between the Eleventh Circuit and Sixth Circuit, the High Court will have little choice but to take the case and resolve the fate of the forced-purchase mandate. After over a year of delaying tactics, the Obama Administration has no more options to slow-walk the constitutional end-game for the mandate.

Our best estimate is that the case will be argued either in late March or in April 2012. The Court will issue its decision near the end of its term in June, during the presidential candidate nominating season.

Though the Eleventh Circuit only struck down the individual mandate and related must-carry provisions, it could be the thread that unravels the sweater. And the Supreme Court's decision can't come soon enough. The more America learns about Obamacare, the worse it becomes.

Obamacare has far-reaching consequences for all corners of American society, the economy chief among them. In addition to the unconstitutional individual mandate, Obamacare includes more than $500 billion in new taxes, burdensome new paperwork for business owners, and penalties for companies with more than 50 workers that do not provide employees with a mandated level of health coverage. And with the added costs Obamacare brings, the nation's publicly held debt will be $753 billion higher at the end of 2020.

Heritage's Kathryn Nix writes, "Heritage's Center for Data Analysis simulated the overall effects of the new law on the economy and found that Obamacare would result in reduced investment in the U.S. economy and a loss of 670,000 job opportunities every year." With 9.1 percent unemployment and an average duration of unemployment hitting a record high of 40 weeks, the last thing the U.S. economy needs is another anchor weighing it down. As Heritage analyst Curtis Dubay explains, the law "will slow economic growth, reduce employment, and suppress wages. These economy-slowing policies could not come at a worse time. [Obamacare] tax increases will impede an already staggering recovery."

To date, 28 states have challenged the constitutionality of Obamacare in court. A federal circuit court has struck down a central pillar of the law, holding that the individual mandate is unconstitutional. The judges have affirmed a truth that Americans already know: When Congress passed Obamacare and the President signed it into law, they crossed a constitutional line in the sand. Fortunately, the courts are holding that line, and now it is up to the U.S. Supreme Court to make it final.

The Fiscal Benefits of Fixing Broken Homes

"Divorce reform could save billions in government aid," pronounced a Washington Times article this week. Amidst calls to rein in government spending, divorce reform advocates suggest that promoting reconciliation for struggling couples could save taxpayers millions each year.

Reform advocates are quick to point out the high fiscal costs of marital dissolution. As the University of Virginia's National Marriage Project notes, just one divorce can cost state and federal governments up to $30,000 as dependency on government aid increases with family dissolution. With roughly 40 to 50 percent of marriages predicted to end in divorce, marital breakdown can cost billions each year in government assistance.

Perhaps even more troubling than the economic costs of divorce, society's grand experiment in family breakdown has serious ramifications for the well-being of future generations. Children who do not live in intact families are more likely to have decreased academic performance and experience higher rates of divorce in their own marriages. Adolescents from non-intact families are more likely to engage in sexual activity, use illicit drugs, and exhibit anti-social behavior.

Intact marriage, on the other hand, can have profound social and economic benefits for current and future generations, promoting greater physical health, improving finances, and providing the emotional stability to raise well-adjusted children. Marriage can even help reduce child poverty.

As Chris Gersten, former Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services and founder and chairman of the Coalition for Divorce Reform, writes, "We know that an intact family is the best vehicle for raising physically and emotionally healthy children. ... From birth to death, the intact two-parent married family is the ultimate support system."

Contrary to public impression, couples in troubled marriages understand the importance of family stability to themselves and their children and a significant number of divorcing couples would respond to reconciliation efforts, if given the opportunity. The many social and economic benefits of marriage should inspire policy leaders to encourage stable family formation, promote options for reconciliation, and reward success in marriage.

At a time when federal and state budgets are strapped for revenue, efforts to address costly marital dissolution and family breakdown are urgently needed.

U.S. Credit Rating Downgraded: Now They've Done It

By J.D. Foster, Ph.D.

Late on Friday, August 5, Standard & Poor's (S&P) downgraded the United States credit rating from AAA, and really best in class, to AA+. In one fell swoop, S&P sent two separate and powerful messages. First, as The Heritage Foundation and many others warned, the spending reductions in the deal negotiated by President Obama to raise the debt ceiling were entirely and woefully inadequate. Second, the global economy, the national economy, and state finances have all in their own ways been delivered a mighty and frightening body blow.

For decades past memory, United States government debt was deemed the gold standard of credit quality. Textbooks referred to U.S. Treasuries as the "riskless asset" against which all others were compared. Those days have passed, at least for now, because the U.S. government has rapidly piled debt upon debt and, on its current trajectory, evidences no inclination to stop. Under the circumstances, without a fundamental policy course correction, a repeatedly threatened credit rating downgrade became inevitable, with only the timing at issue.

National Right To Work Committee

"There's nothing wrong, or un-democratic, or un-American about militancy. It's part of our tradition."

That's one Communications Workers of America (CWA) union official's spin in response to news reports about rampant intimidation and militancy on the picket lines in the strike against Verizon ordered by CWA and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) union brass.

New disturbing reports break every day.

Union strikers shot at one worker. Another injured his arm after union goons pushed him into scaffolding. Verizon's security chief receives hundreds of reports of sabotage, intimidation, or violence daily.

With 143 acts of sabotage since August 7, the first day of the strike, company officials and independent-minded workers aren't the only victims.

When union militants cut phone lines, Verizon customers who just want their phones to work may be unable to call for help in an emergency. IBEW union militants even picketed outside a 64 year old woman's house because she had the audacity to let a Verizon technician repair her broken phone line.

The CWA union boss is right about one thing: union militancy is a big part of Big Labor's tradition
.

Just last week, far from the union picket lines against Verizon, John King, a nonunion electrical contractor in Toledo, Ohio woke up in the middle of the night to sounds in his driveway. The motion light turned on, and he went outside to investigate -- and found someone vandalizing his car.

The vandal stood up, shot King in the arm, and fled the scene.

This isn't the first time union militants have targeted King -- or his employees. Earlier this year, someone threw a rock with the word "kill" inscribed on it through his store's window.

Fortunately, the worst possible outcome has yet to occur in the Verizon strike or to King and his workers. But union violence can -- and has -- cost workers' lives.

In 1993, nonunion contractor Eddie York was killed after getting shot in the back of the head during a particularly violent United Mineworkers (UMW) strike
.

Reader's Digest reported that "UMW President Richard Trumka did not publicly discipline or reprimand a single striker present when York was killed. In fact, all eight were helped out financially by the local."

After an earlier UMW strike, a Virginia judge found that "the evidence shows beyond any shadow of a doubt that violent activities are being organized, orchestrated and encouraged by the leadership of this union."

Richard Trumka is now the President of the AFL-CIO, the largest Big Labor umbrella organization with affiliates including both the CWA and IBEW unions.

For more on Trumka's ugly history of violence and intimidation, download the National Right to Work Foundation's fact sheet.

The "tradition" of union militancy employed by Trumka and others is compounded by a loophole in federal law that exempts union officials from federal prosecution -- as long as the campaign of violence they incite is in the name of "legitimate union objectives."

Please, click here to urge your Congressman and Senators to close that loophole by cosponsoring and seeking roll-call votes on the Freedom from Union Violence Act.

Unless the politicians in Washington are forced to pay attention, they will continue to turn a blind eye to the violence committed by their union-boss patrons.

In addition to your signed petition, your generous contribution will enable us to personally brief hundreds of influential nationally syndicated columnists, editorial writers and talk radio hosts in order to build momentum in the media for the Freedom from Union Violence Act.

Please chip in with a contribution of $10 or more today to help put an end to Big Labor's terror tactics once and for all.

It's time to end this so-called "tradition."

Susan's Paul Ryan Medicare Pamphlet - please print this and give it to your contacts

SAVING MEDICARE

Since 1964, our nation's senior citizens have relied on Medicare to ensure access to healthcare. Now the program is going broke -- and it is going broke fast.

It began spending its reserves in 2008 when payouts exceeded dollars collected for the program. [cite]

Predictions for exhaustion of the reserve vary, with 2024 identified by the Social Security Administration in the Trustees 2011 report. [cite]

The Democrat response is to reduce the amount Medicare reimburses physicians for their services. [cite]

This will result in fewer participating physicians and the physicians continuing in the program seeing fewer Medicare patients.

Patients will wait longer and have fewer choices in seeing a doctor.

If this makes access to care sufficiently untenable, or if Medicare does not get on viable financial footing, it will be administered through ObamaCare[cite].

This would include cost controls by a 15-member board of bureaucrats deciding wich treatments, drugs, and surgeries patients can receive.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget, has a plan which saves Medicare with no disruption to today's seniors and reasonable changes for future retirees.

The Ryan Plan is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. The future of our seniors' healthcare is too important to be decided on misinformation. Here are the facts about Medicare and the Ryan Plan.

The Ryan Plan in a Nutshell

Those currently retired and those close to retirement (55 and over) will see no change from the existing Medicare system. Existing physician reimbursement flaws will be corrected to encourage physicians to continue participating in the system.[cite]

On retirement, those currently under 55 will be provided vouchers from the government to help pay for health insurance. Voucher amounts will be based in part on income, with wealthier individuals receiving less assistance. Risk pools [cite] will be created to ensure that insurance companies will provide coverage to seniors, despite their generally higher use of medical care.

The result is retirees will have a system that gives them options, similar to that which members of Congress use and which will include options similar to Medicare Advantage, the popular plan eliminated by Obamacare. [cite]

The Ryan Plan Incorporates These Important Points

It is important that we

Plan now for changes, to avoid chaos later

The medicare system is running out of money. Change is coming, one way or another.

Pretending we can continue as we are is not an option, it is a recipe for disaster. The longer we wait to make changes, the greater the disruption to current and future retires, the more abruptly the changes will have to be implemented, and the fewer options we will have.

By implementing the Ryan Plan now, we will

  • maintain the existing system for current retirees and for individuals 55 and over
  • provide a sustainable, quality system for future retirees.

It is important that we...

Preserve the existing system, unchanged, for current retirees and workers 55 and older

This bears repeating:

  • Under the Ryan Plan, if you are retired, your Medicare coverage will not change.
  • If you are over 55, Medicare as it exists today will be there for you when you retire.
  • And the Ryan Plan provides for quality health insurance coverage upon retirement for those currently under 55.

Maintain availability of insurance coverage for future retirees

Since individuals generally require more medical care as they age, it tends to be difficult for older individuals to find private health insurance that will cover them. That is one reason our existing Medicare system is considered so important for many. The Ryan Plan creates risk pools which encourage multiple insurance companies to offer health coverage to those of retirement age.

It is important that we...

Maintain affordability

Individuals have paid into the Medicare system with the promise that coverage will be there for them when they retire. Unfortunately, we are facing an economic crisis in this country and Medicare is a significant part of the problem. To save the system for everyone and to avert broader economic calamity, in the future wealthier Americans will have to bear a greater portion of their healthcare burden.

It is important that we...

Make it feasible for doctors to participate in Medicare

Currently in many areas of the country physicans are reimbursed for Medicare patients at a rate that does not cover their expenses. Recent changes put forth by the Democrats further reduce reimbursement. [cite] This is not sustainable for any business and as a result increasing numbers of physicians are discontinuing their participation in the Medcare program. Patients are finding that their physician is no longer a Medicare provider and when they look for another physician it is increasingly difficult for them to find a Medicare provider who is accepting new patients and can see them in a reasonable time. [cite]. The Ryan plan fixes the reimbursement problem, making it feasible for physicians to continue participating in Medicare.

It is important that we...

Keep medical decisions between patients and doctors, not remote government panels

The Ryan plan harnesses the free market and puts choice in the hands of the patient. Retirees will be able to pick the insurance plan that best meets their needs, applying government vouchers toward premium costs. Medical decisions would be made in consultation with their personal physician, based on the individual's situation and preferences.

Terrorists strike in Israel

Glenn has been broadcasting in Israel all week long and today there was a shocking attack in the resort city of Eilat, generally not known as a terrorist hot spot. But that has all changed as at least 6 are dead and dozens more are injured after assailants armed with heavy weapons, guns and explosives launched three attacks in succession. The terrorists targeted a passenger bus, a military patrol and a private car. Glenn has the latest on the attack and the mood in Israel after the violence on radio today. Get the details HERE. Read more details HERE.

Press reaction to Glenn Beck in Israel: Much of the press reporting on an event designed to show support for Israel during a crucial time has been positive - but leftist hacks weren't going to let that space be occupied by sanity and reason forever. Glenn, the 'bizarre fascist comedian' reads from one of the rare hit jobs on radio today. DETAILS.

Glenn unloads on Boehner; should be 'ashamed of himself'

Glenn interviewed freshman Congressman Joe Walsh today, a big supporter of Israel and Glenn's Restoring Courage events which beigin THIS SUNDAY. Glenn lashed out at Speaker Boehner for choosing to 'punish' 'bad' Republicans while blocking Congressman from attending the event next week. It's a shameful move and after the interview Glenn absolutely tears the Speaker a new one. Check it out HERE

Ron Bloom quotes Mao again; even worse this time

Obama's manufacturing czar Ron Bloom (hey, good job so far Ron!) is most famous for quoting Mao and saying he agreed with the murderous dictator and his 'power comes from the barrel of a gun' philosophy. He later said he was joking (haha! Hilarious! Not), a pretty pathetic excuse from the ex-union thug. You'd think Bloom would know better to quote Mao again - but he doesn't. He made a not-so veiled glowing reference to the 'hundred flowers' campaign Mao conducted, in which he tricked free thinkers and ended up executing them. Glenn has the story on radio - get the details HERE.

Was Jesus a socialist?

Leftists often try and use a few passages in the Bible to make the case that socialism is what God says we should be implementing here on Earth. Does Jesus command us to help the poor? Yup. Problem the left has is finding the verse in the Bible that says 'help the poor - by giving your money to the government.' But hey, libs, glad to see you're checking out the Bible - while we're there, why don't you guys check out Psalm 139:13 and see if that contradicts any of your current platform positions. Get the full story HERE.

Glenn's interview with former Secret Service agent now candidate Dan Bongino

One of the first public figures to come out and endorse the Restoring Courage events, Glenn questions the sanity of Bongino for leaving such an honorable organization as the Secret Service and replacing it with politics. That said, Dan is one of the good guys - he got heat for supporting Restoring Courage, but he's not wavering. Check out the conversation from radio today HERE.

Obama blames ATMs for poor economy AGAIN

For being one of the smartest people ever, Barack Obama seems to say a lot of idiotic things. A few weeks ago Obama bemoaned modern technology, such as ATMs (really? that's modern?) that make businesses 'more efficient' (as if that's a bad thing) and in turn, use less employees. Well, he doubled down on the ATM complaint AGAIN. Harvard should be ashamed. Glenn reacts on radio today. WATCH
