Quote:
"Democracy... while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide." ~ John Adams
"We have heard of the impious doctrine in the old world, that the people were made for kings, not kings for the people. Is the same doctrine to be revived in the new, in another shape - that the solid happiness of the people is to be sacrificed to the views of political institutions of a different form? It is too early for politicians to presume on our forgetting that the public good, the real welfare of the great body of the people, is the supreme object to be pursued; and that no form of government whatever has any other value than as it may be fitted for the attainment of this object."

Obama Increased National Debt More in 4 Days Than Truman and Eisenhower Did in 10 Years
The Blaze | by Tiffany Gabbay | Posted on August 10, 2011 at 6:11am
Last week the Obama administration reportedly increased the national debt (in inflation-adjusted dollars) more in a mere four days than the administrations of Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower increased it from 1950-1960 - an entire decade.

Democrats Force Elections in Wisconsin .. and Lose
Conservative Daily News | By R. Mitchell | Aug 10th, 2011
Wisconsin Governor Scott Brown(R) was elected on the idea that he would take care of the taxpayer's money. In short, he would balance the state's budget without asking the taxpayers to come up with more cash. He did it.
One of the casualties of frugality was the unions. They would no longer have a dictatorship-like ability to force workers to pay into their coffers and no longer could government workers collectively bargain with the very people that would want their support in future elections - an obvious quid-pro-quo situation.
Union leaders went after the seats of the six Republican senators eligible for recall - an early re-election vote - and failed.

THESE PHOTOS JUST BECAME DECLASSIFIED - FROM 9/11
The anniversary of 9/11 is coming up. We must never forget what happened and who was responsible. The threat is still with us of more destruction to come. Those radical islamist tell us so all the time. We all seem to dismiss it. We must press our Congress to look into all those who may be amongst us now training and getting ready to launch another attack. We must never allow a mosque to built any where near that sacred ground. Please be at the rally on 9/11 as the Mayor has given approval for the mosque to be built.
We the people must rise up and say NO!

Press Release:
AFDI/SIOA 9/11 Freedom Rally:
Stand Against Ground Zero Mosque, and Durban III, Stand for America
NEW YORK, July 6: The human rights organization American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) will be hosting its second annual 9/11 Freedom Rally on September 11 at 3pm at Park Place and West Broadway.
Free citizens are coming from all over the U.S. to attend the rally. "It is crucial to stand for freedom on this tenth anniversary of the heinous 9/11 jihad attacks," said AFDI Executive Director Pamela Geller. "We must show the jihadists we are unbowed in the defense of freedom."
AFDI and its Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) program are encouraging all Americans to stand against the Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero and the anti-Semitic Durban III conference that will be held in New York City at the same time, and for American values on the tenth anniversary of the worst attack ever on American soil.
The confirmed list of speakers includes 9/11 family members Alexander and Maureen Santora, who lost their firefighter son Christopher; Sally Regenhard, whose son Christian was killed on 9/11; Nelly Braginsky, who lost her son Alexander; and others.
Other speakers include former U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton (video message); the courageous ex-Muslim human rights activist Wafa Sultan; war hero and North Carolina Congressional candidate Ilario Pantano; former prosecutor and bestselling author Andrew C. McCarthy; popular radio host Joyce Kaufman; Darla Dawald, National Director of the Patriot Action Network; James Lafferty of the Virginia Anti-Sharia Taskforce (VAST); Coptic Christian activist Joseph Nassralla; Iraqi ex-Muslim Paul Gaynos.
Hosting the rally are Pamela Geller, publisher of the acclaimed AtlasShrugs.com blog, executive director of AFDI and SIOA, and author of Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance (WND Books); and AFDI/SIOA associate director Robert Spencer, the bestselling author and director of Jihad Watch.
Building the Ground Zero mosque is not an issue of religious freedom, but of resisting an effort to insult the victims of 9/11 and to establish a beachhead for political Islam and Islamic supremacism in New York. Cordoba Initiative board member imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is an open proponent of Sharia, Islamic law, a system that denies the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law. Given the thousands of triumphal mosques that have been built on the cherished sites of conquered peoples throughout Islamic history, the mosque leaders' claim that this mosque would be understood differently by Muslims worldwide lack foundation.
The Durban III conference follows upon two previous conferences that scapegoated and demonized the state of Israel in service of Islamic jihad and Islamic supremacist interests. The rally will defend Israel against the defamation to which it will be subjected at this conference. It will also call upon the city to remove roadblocks to the reconstruction of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on 9/11 and since then mired in bureaucratic red tape that has prevented its rebuilding - in stark contrast to the help Mayor Bloomberg and other city officials have given to the Ground Zero Mosque project.
AFDI/SIOA is one of America's foremost organizations defending human rights, religious liberty, and the freedom of speech against Islamic supremacist intimidation and attempts to bring elements of Sharia to the United States.

"We have gone to the capitals of our states and to the capitals of our government. We have talked to all the power brokers. The only power broker, the only seat of government that can and will solve this problem with or without us is God. It is time to return inside the walls that surround Jerusalem and stand with people of all faiths, all around the world," Glenn said in his initial announcement.
"In August, whether I'm there with seven people or 10 people or there alone, I will stand. I ask you to join me. I also ask you to take this message globally, to take this to every corner of the earth. If you have family living overseas, this is not an America solution. This is a people of faith solution. This is a people all over the world solution. I ask you to help get this word out."

Many of us went to the Restoring Honor event last year and we were deeply moved by the day's events. Being with others we know made this even more special. Although we are not going to travel to Israel, we are hoping that we can recreate that atmosphere here in Bucks County. We are still in the development stages of this event and would like to hear your suggestions on how to have it work out. And if you can help with the planning, set up and the break down, please let us know. These events are even more special when you are part of the effort to make it come off well for everyone who comes. Be sure to invite your friends and family to come as well. This would be a great opportunity to meet other patriots and meet some new ones. Let us know you are coming on our Facebook event post .

Patriots,
The Pa legislature is going to have its first hearing ever on a Right to Work package of legislation (House Bills 50-53). It will be held on Tuesday, August 16 from 1-4 p.m. in room 205 of the Ryan Office Building. There is no doubt that the unions will be out in force to try to intimidate members of the Labor committee. If you can get out to the hearing that would be great, please let as many people know about it as possible so members know that the grassroots support Right to Work.
|
Some of us would like to sit in on this hearing because - ·Warren Kampf serves on the House Labor Cmte and ·our presence might counter the expected labor union presence! Sean Dempsey, Warren's district office manager, listed the individual bills: HB 50 - Establishes a Right to Work law. HB 51 - Establishes that Union Dues can not be automatically deducted from payroll HB 52 - very similar to HB 51 in spirit HB 53 - very similar again to HB 51 He said that "Generally Warren is for leveling the playing field for job creators and that is what these bills aim to do". He cautioned this is a hearing and no vote is expected. I think PA needs to be a RIGHT TO WORK state! www.nrtw.org Warren's serving on this Labor & Industry Cmte adds another reason to attend.

RedState Morning Briefing
For August 9, 2011
1. Balanced Approach: The Tax Hikes That Democrats Should Propose
So this year's fiscal-policy code word is "balanced approach." This means nothing more or less than higher taxes on high earners, business income, and capital gains.
Congressman Eric Cantor remarked at one point in the debt-ceiling debate that the Democrats (including Obama) were totally stuck on the idea of raising taxes. But Cantor stressed that they never presented an economic rationale for higher taxes. It was all about class warfare, pure and simple.
Class warfare is like catnip to progressives. The problem with class warfare is that it doesn't give us growth and jobs. At least a few of the Democrats recognize that growth is a mandatory part of a fiscal-reform strategy (higher taxes and spending/entitlement cuts are the other two).
Remember the Bush tax-cut debate last year? Then, Democrats readily admitted the numbers: the Bush tax cuts on high earners were worth an estimated $700 billion in revenues over ten years, while the same cuts on everyone else were worth about $2.8 trillion.
You can raise taxes on high earners, but you don't solve any economic problem that way. There just aren't enough rich people to buy candy and bubble gum for everyone else. Plus, you kill job growth by wiping out their incentives to take on economic risk.
So it's plain and obvious that the ONLY motivation that Obama and the Democrats have for their "balanced approach" is class envy. Economics has nothing to do with it.
2. Verizon Strikers Using Children, Harassing & Menacing Replacement Workers
It's only been a few days since 45,000 CWA and IBEW members walked off their jobs at Verizon, however, incidents of harassment, sabotage, and illegal picketing have already begun to pile up.
On Tuesday, Verizon obtained an injunction in Pennsylvania and filed for one in Delaware "to prevent 'illegal' and 'reprehensible' strike activities such as keeping managers out of buildings."
In one deplorable incident, a foul-mouthed IBEW member in New Jersey put his young daughter in front of a Verizon truck turning into a driveway as he berated the driver using expletives.
3. The Enemy Within
Rick Perry said a prayer on Sunday.
After you've picked yourselves up off the floor and recovered from your collective shock, you can read the full transcript of it here, or if you are so inclined, you can watch the video here. As is perfectly obvious to everyone who has ever met someone who's attended a Christian church, Perry's prayer was standard-fare mainstream evangelicalism - and painstakingly non-partisan. . . .
Perry had the audacity to suggest - in keeping with the beliefs of virtually every religious person I know (including non-Christians) - that a nation needs the blessings of God in order to survive and thrive . . . .
This innocuous statement provoked some truly idiotic and bigoted responses on twitter from some folks who are regularly given column inches on prominent conservative blogs. Jenn Rubin, token "conservative" at the Washington Post, was really upset that the event was supposed to be inclusive, but Perry used the word "Christ." Or something. Furthermore, Rubin posited that nobody outside of Texas likes Jesus or people who believe in Jesus, and therefore this was going to hurt Perry on the national stage.
At this point, though, it's pretty clear that David Brooks is a more reliable barometer of conservative thought than Rubin. Perhaps more disturbing is that bloggers who are regularly given platforms at actual conservative sites went much farther (and stupider) than Rubin.
4. Verizon Offers $50,000 Reward After Sabotage On Day Two Of Militant Union Strike
It's been less than 24 hours since the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) called 45,000 of their respective members out on strike against Verizon and, already, there are reports of sabotage of Verizon equipment, as well as illegal picketing.

Susan's Paul Ryan Medicare Pamphlet - please print this and give it to your contacts
SAVING MEDICARE
Since 1964, our nation's senior citizens have relied on Medicare to ensure access to healthcare. Now the program is going broke -- and it is going broke fast.
It began spending its reserves in 2008 when payouts exceeded dollars collected for the program. [cite]
Predictions for exhaustion of the reserve vary, with 2024 identified by the Social Security Administration in the Trustees 2011 report. [cite]
The Democrat response is to reduce the amount Medicare reimburses physicians for their services. [cite]
This will result in fewer participating physicians and the physicians continuing in the program seeing fewer Medicare patients.
Patients will wait longer and have fewer choices in seeing a doctor.
If this makes access to care sufficiently untenable, or if Medicare does not get on viable financial footing, it will be administered through ObamaCare[cite].
This would include cost controls by a 15-member board of bureaucrats deciding wich treatments, drugs, and surgeries patients can receive.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget, has a plan which saves Medicare with no disruption to today's seniors and reasonable changes for future retirees.
The Ryan Plan is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. The future of our seniors' healthcare is too important to be decided on misinformation. Here are the facts about Medicare and the Ryan Plan.
The Ryan Plan in a Nutshell
Those currently retired and those close to retirement (55 and over) will see no change from the existing Medicare system. Existing physician reimbursement flaws will be corrected to encourage physicians to continue participating in the system.[cite]
On retirement, those currently under 55 will be provided vouchers from the government to help pay for health insurance. Voucher amounts will be based in part on income, with wealthier individuals receiving less assistance. Risk pools [cite] will be created to ensure that insurance companies will provide coverage to seniors, despite their generally higher use of medical care.
The result is retirees will have a system that gives them options, similar to that which members of Congress use and which will include options similar to Medicare Advantage, the popular plan eliminated by Obamacare. [cite]
The Ryan Plan Incorporates These Important Points
It is important that we
Plan now for changes, to avoid chaos later
The medicare system is running out of money. Change is coming, one way or another.
Pretending we can continue as we are is not an option, it is a recipe for disaster. The longer we wait to make changes, the greater the disruption to current and future retires, the more abruptly the changes will have to be implemented, and the fewer options we will have.
By implementing the Ryan Plan now, we will
- maintain the existing system for current retirees and for individuals 55 and over
- provide a sustainable, quality system for future retirees.
It is important that we...
Preserve the existing system, unchanged, for current retirees and workers 55 and older
This bears repeating:
- Under the Ryan Plan, if you are retired, your Medicare coverage will not change.
- If you are over 55, Medicare as it exists today will be there for you when you retire.
- And the Ryan Plan provides for quality health insurance coverage upon retirement for those currently under 55.
It is important that we...
Maintain availability of insurance coverage for future retirees
Since individuals generally require more medical care as they age, it tends to be difficult for older individuals to find private health insurance that will cover them. That is one reason our existing Medicare system is considered so important for many. The Ryan Plan creates risk pools which encourage multiple insurance companies to offer health coverage to those of retirement age.
It is important that we...
Maintain affordability
Individuals have paid into the Medicare system with the promise that coverage will be there for them when they retire. Unfortunately, we are facing an economic crisis in this country and Medicare is a significant part of the problem. To save the system for everyone and to avert broader economic calamity, in the future wealthier Americans will have to bear a greater portion of their healthcare burden.
It is important that we...
Make it feasible for doctors to participate in Medicare
Currently in many areas of the country physicans are reimbursed for Medicare patients at a rate that does not cover their expenses. Recent changes put forth by the Democrats further reduce reimbursement. [cite] This is not sustainable for any business and as a result increasing numbers of physicians are discontinuing their participation in the Medcare program. Patients are finding that their physician is no longer a Medicare provider and when they look for another physician it is increasingly difficult for them to find a Medicare provider who is accepting new patients and can see them in a reasonable time. [cite]. The Ryan plan fixes the reimbursement problem, making it feasible for physicians to continue participating in Medicare.
It is important that we...
Keep medical decisions between patients and doctors, not remote government panels
The Ryan plan harnesses the free market and puts choice in the hands of the patient. Retirees will be able to pick the insurance plan that best meets their needs, applying government vouchers toward premium costs. Medical decisions would be made in consultation with their personal physician, based on the individual's situation and preferences.

Long litany of Palestinian sexual assaults on other female activists shows it might have happened. by Bill Levinson Did Rachel Corrie kneel in front of a bulldozer because she wanted to die after being sexually degraded by the people she came to help, and then told to keep quiet about it? This is impossible to prove one way or another but the experiences of other female activists show that it is quite likely that the Palestinians used Rachel Corrie for sexual gratification the same way they are known to have used other women. Note the phrase "routinely harassed and raped." Two activists have exposed a disturbing phenomenon that they say is an open secret within the "peace camp": female "peace" activists are routinely harassed and raped by the Arabs of Judea and Samaria with whom they have come to identify. They say the phenomenon has gotten worse lately and that many foreign women end up as wives of local Arabs against their will, but cannot escape their new... Read the whole entry »

The Netherlands to Abandon Multiculturalism It is worth knowing that Ghert Wilders is in the government of the Netherlands. Ted Belman by Soeren Kern, HUDSON NY June 23, 2011 The Dutch government says it will abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands. A new integration bill (covering letter and 15-page action plan), which Dutch Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner presented to parliament on June 16, reads: "The government shares the social dissatisfaction over the multicultural society model and plans to shift priority to the values of the Dutch people. In the new integration system, the values of the Dutch society play a central role. With this change, the government steps away from the model of a multicultural society." The letter continues: "A more obligatory integration is justified because the government also demands that from its own citizens. It is necessary because otherwise the society... A Jewish Peace Plan By Paul Eidelberg Ever since the futile and fatal Israel-PLO Agreement of 1993, I have advocated a Peace Plan to overcome the Israel-Palestinian conflict. It is a Jewish peace plan, the only kind based on a realistic assessment of Israel's enemy. Genuine realism requires a theological understanding of the enemy. Genuine realists know that territorial compromise with Muslims only whets their appetite for further aggression. Genuine realists know there are no empirical grounds to expect Muslims to renounce Jihadism-the precondition of peace-unless they are so devastated as to expunge their desire to wage war for a hundred years-as the Allied powers did to Nazi Germany. Israel's leadership must first act on the recognition that if Iran develops nuclear weapons, Israel will cease to be a viable state as I have shown in previous articles. Hence, Israel will have to destroy Iran's nuclear weapons development program. Israel's leaders must understand that Jerusalem is the... Read the whole entry »

2012 Update
The Obama Fear & Smear Machine
There is a very revealing report in Politico today. Obama's reelection campaign is growing increasingly desperate. The hope is gone. And Obama is no longer the change candidate, but the status quo candidate. The 2012 campaign will be about fear and the politics of personal destruction.
The Obama team is assuming that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will be the eventual GOP nominee. Their campaign strategy is simple, and the story's headline says it all - "Obama plan: Destroy Romney." Consider this excerpt:
"Barack Obama's aides and advisers are preparing to center the president's reelection campaign on a ferocious personal assault on Mitt Romney's character and business background... The dramatic and unabashedly negative turn is the product of political reality. ...And so the candidate who ran on 'hope' in 2008 has little choice four years later but to run a slashing, personal campaign..."
As I have warned for months, Obama's reelection campaign is going to be brutal and ugly. Everyone recognizes that America is at a crossroads. Difficult decisions will have to be made in the next few years, and the left is desperate to maintain power. It will do anything to reelect Obama.
It doesn't matter who the GOP nominates. Take that paragraph above, remove Romney's name and replace it with your favorite candidate. We are living through Jimmy Carter's second term. With that kind of a record to run on, Obama's only hope of reelection is to destroy his opponent with "ferocious personal assaults" in a "slashing campaign." Whoever wins the nomination will face a billion-dollar "fear and smear" machine. The left plays hardball.
While Obama gave rousing speeches and did his best to appear moderate, his political allies were slinging mud from the gutter. Remember the New York Times hit piece that falsely accused Sen. John McCain of having an affair with a lobbyist? Remember how the Tea Party movement was accused of racism for opposing ObamaCare and more recently of "financial terrorism"? We know how the media treated Sarah Palin, and we can see how they are savaging Michele Bachmann now.
Last week the Huffington Post published Rick Perry's college transcripts. Governor Perry isn't even a candidate yet, but somehow his transcripts became public information. Perhaps in the interest of journalist integrity and balance, the crack investigative team at the Huffington Post will find Obama's transcripts! I won't hold my breath.
ObamaCare To Cost More
When Congress begins its next round of deficit reduction talks, ObamaCare must be on the table. The country cannot afford another trillion-dollar entitlement program. But the more we learn about ObamaCare the more it is likely to cost taxpayers.
The latest ObamaCare bombshell comes from Richard Burkhauser, an economist at Cornell University. According to Dr. Burkhauser's research, ObamaCare's cost estimates were derived from calculations that involved insuring only individuals and not entire families. As a result, ObamaCare is likely to cost at least $50 billion more per year.
How could such a gross oversight be made? Because Democrats demanded it. In an interview yesterday, Dr. Burkhauser said, "The Congressional Budget Office has never done a cost-estimate of this [because] they were expressly told to do their modeling on single [person] coverage."
Nancy Pelosi famously said of ObamaCare that we would have to pass the bill to find out what was in it. That remark not only demonstrated the left's hypocrisy on matters of transparency, it also came to symbolize the left's arrogant elitism. That's one reason why voters have consistently supported ObamaCare's repeal.
I think a new slogan is in order: We have to repeal ObamaCare before we find out what else is in it!
Common Ground On Life
A new Gallup poll suggests there is considerable common ground between "pro-choice" and pro-life Americans. For example, 52% of Americans who identify as "pro-choice" favor banning abortions after the second trimester. Here are more results from the survey:
- 60% of "pro-choice" Americans favor 24-hour waiting periods before abortions
- 60% of "pro-choice" Americans support parental consent for minors seeking abortions
- 86% support "informed" consent requirements for women seeking abortions.
In addition, the poll also found that while Americans were equally divided between the "pro-choice" and pro-life labels (47% each), an overwhelming majority of 58% felt that most abortions should be prohibited. Just 26% supported the most radical view - a view held by President Obama - that abortion should be legal under any circumstances.

Limbaugh on Market Collapse: Obama Engineering the Decline of America
Monday, 08 Aug 2011
By Jim Meyers
Top-rated talk radio host Rush Limbaugh finds a "silver lining" in the downgrading of America's credit rating: There no longer is any doubt that President Barack Obama can be roundly defeated in 2012.
"Obamageddon - that's what we have witnessed since Friday," Rush told his listeners on Monday.
"Obamageddon. Barackalypse Now. The only silver lining I can find is that as far as 2012 goes, Obama's a Debt Man Walking. Anybody want to tell me he's not landslidable now?

Applying First Principles to the Issues of Today |
Top Ten Do's and Don'ts in a Bad Economy
Last quarter, the economy grew by a measly 0.4 percent. Last month, unemployment wallowed at 9.1 percent. And last week, Standard & Poor's downgraded United States credit rating for the first time ever. Everyone agrees: the United States economy is in the tank.
But, what we do about it depends on who you ask.
According to Paul Krugman of The New York Times, we need another $800 billion stimulus to jump start the economy. The first one, you see, wasn't big enough. And, its not the debt we should worry about, but that pesky tea party: "The real question facing America, even in purely fiscal terms, isn't whether we'll trim a trillion here or a trillion there from deficits. It is whether the extremists now blocking any kind of responsible policy can be defeated and marginalized."
But, for those of us who find little comfort in Krugman's prescriptions, we turn to the ideas of Friedrich Hayek, the author of the classic Road to Serfdom and one of the most important economists of the 20th century.
In his essay, Bruce Caldwell, the editor of The Collected Works of F.A. Hayek (19 volumes), distills the key Hayekian insights on what to do-and not do-during a recession. The short of it: "We usually don't have the necessary knowledge to intervene effectively in the economy, and the political process is such that, even if we did, we still likely would get bad policy, coupled with an ever-growing government sector."
With a little help from public-choice theorists, here are the ten Hayekian insights for trying economic times:
1. Recessions are bound to happen: Shifts between periods of economic growth and periods of stagnation or decline are a necessary and unavoidable part of a free-market monetary economy. Downturns are not aberrations but rather painful and necessary medicine for restoring equilibrium to the economy.
2. A stimulus will only stimulate the deficit: Past experience with trying to fine-tune the economy shows that counter-cyclical fiscal and monetary policy can sometimes make matters much worse (as in the 1970s). Wise politicians would therefore be advised not to meddle, however much their instincts tell them to show voters they're doing something.
3. Pure laissez-faire doesn't work either: Some regulation is necessary for individuals to carry out their plans and for the market to function. Hayek therefore endorsed "general rules, equally applicable to all people and intended to be permanent (even if subject to revision with the growth of knowledge), which provides an institutional framework within which the decisions as to what to do and how to earn a living are left up to the individuals."
4. Central planning and excessive regulation sure as hell don't work: The desire to plan and to subject the economy to the rule of experts endangers liberty. As Hayek succinctly noted: "the more the 'state' plans, the more difficult planning becomes for the individual."
5. The economy is too complex for precise forecasting: As Yogi Berra could have said: "I hate making economic predictions. Especially about the future." It's not that we don't know anything, but rather that what we do know reveals the limits of our knowledge, and consequently, of our ability to plan and forecast.
6. Remember the rule of unintended consequences: History shows that when trying to realize certain ends-particularly when their achievement involves interfering with the workings of the price mechanism-all sorts of pernicious effects will occur that were not part of the original plan.
7. You won't believe how much you'll learn in Econ 101: While Hayek repeatedly pointed to the limitations inherent in a discipline that deals with a complex system like the economy, the basic principles of economics-scarcity, supply and demand, division of labor, etc.-can explain a lot about the world and, more importantly, help rule out certain inappropriate policy responses (e.g. price ceilings).
8. Leave social justice out of it: Free markets necessarily lead to an unequal distribution of wealth and, just as inevitably, fuel calls for egalitarian social justice. Hayek viewed such cries as misguided-justice has nothing to do with an impersonal market process-and dangerous-redistributive schemes presume that we possess knowledge that we in fact can never possess (see #5).
9. Nothing beats the free market: Hayek admitted that if we had more knowledge we could do a lot more to improve the world through planning and regulation. But we don't, and in the world of dispersed knowledge we live in, much of the knowledge we actually do possess is due to the workings of the market mechanism.
10. As a rule of thumb, government cures are not only worse than the disease, but lead to further disease: When you consider that bureaucrats have an incentive to maximize bureaucracy, that politicians who seek reelection-and which ones don't?-have an incentive to increase spending and decrease taxes, and that corporations have an incentive to squeeze out the competition through government conferred advantages, you'll conclude that the free market remains our best option (see #9).

Morning Bell: White House Rules by Fiat Once Again
Mike Brownfield
August 9, 2011
In the shadow of yesterday's disastrous Wall Street meltdown and President Barack Obama's address to the nation, a lesser-noticed piece of news emerged from the Obama Administration: By executive fiat, the White House is once again circumventing Congress in the name of advancing the President's agenda.
It's a story we've heard before. Where President Obama can't legislate, he will use executive branch action to accomplish his agenda. In the past, he has applied that tactic in the auto bailout, EPA regulations, and Obamacare. Now he's using this approach to remake No Child Left Behind (NCLB)-the most significant K-12 education law-by granting states conditional waivers from the onerous provisions of NCLB in exchange for adopting a yet-to-be-specified set of executive branch education policy priorities. The news came in an announcement from the Department of Education: Read more:

Liberal Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank described the President as "strangely powerless" and "irresolute," condemning his failure of leadership. Despite the President's remarks, yesterday's ride on Wall Street was a rough one. Bank stocks plunged 11 percent, and markets suffered their worst one-day loss since the 2008 crash, losing 635 points. Following yesterday's stock market drop, today investors are waiting for word from the Federal Reserve on potential changes in monetary policy. The Fed is set to make an announcement at 2:15 p.m. ET today. Global markets "entered official bear market territory" on Tuesday, reacting to the U.S. credit downgrade, Europe's debt crisis, and concerns over a global recession. Fed may strengthen stimulus pledge on recession concern
More stimulus!
Federal Reserve officials may strengthen their commitment to record monetary stimulus as soon as today after a faltering economic recovery and a U.S. credit- rating cut provoked a rout in global stocks.
By a 52 percent to 48 percent margin, respondents in a Bloomberg News survey said the Fed would ease policy this year through monetary tools or statement language. If the central bank acts, 59 percent said it would communicate that the federal funds rate, balance sheet or both will remain especially stimulative for a longer period or more specific amount of time.

S&P Cuts AAA Ratings on Thousands of Municipal Bonds After U.S. Downgrade
Standard & Poor's lowered the AAA ratings of thousands of municipal bonds tied to the federal government, including housing securities and debt backed by leases, following its Aug. 5 downgrade of the U.S.
The rating company assigned AA+ scores to securities in the $2.9 trillion municipal bond market including school- construction bonds in Irving, Texas; debt backed by a federal lease in Miami; and a bond series for multifamily housing in Oceanside, California. Olayinka Fadahunsi, an S&P spokesman, said he couldn't provide a dollar figure on the affected debt.
S&P also cut ratings on securities backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, prerefunded issues and munis repaid by using federal assets, also known as defeased or escrow bonds. No state general-obligation ratings were affected and the company said some may remain unchanged.

Texas Congressman: Impeachment "Needs to Happen" By Ben Johnson, The White House Watch
|
Impeachment usually represents a punitive act following the commission of a crime, but some are looking to it as a last means of self-defense. At a Tea Party town hall meeting last night Rep. Michael Burgess, R-TX, said impeachment "needs to happen" to stop Barack Obama from inflicting more "damage" on this country. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram claims an attendee "suggested that the House push for impeachment proceedings against President Barack Obama to obstruct the president from pushing his agenda." Burgess, who represents four counties in northern Texas, responded: "It needs to happen, and I agree with you it would tie things up. No question about that." He later stood by his comment....

The Dirty Dozen Democrats Who Could Have Prevented the Downgrade By William E. Been, FloydReports.com
|
While watching the debt ceiling increase by $2.4 trillion just to cover spending until the next presidential election, the scam perpetrated on the American people could not have been any more obvious. While the Republican-controlled House of Representatives negotiated with itself for weeks in an attempt to propose something that might save our great nation from financial disaster, neither the U.S. Senate nor the White House proposed any plan at all. Even worse, while listening to Barack Obama's rhetoric about the need for a bipartisan solution, the Majority Leader of the Democrat-controlled Senate announced that bills coming from the House were "dead on arrival." In fact, nothing coming from the House was even allowed to be debated by the overly partisan Senate leadership. This resulted in another crisis-not-to-be-wasted. As the administration-imposed deadline of August 2 approached, the Democrats' rhetoric followed a familiar pattern as they attempted to frighten the American public with false accusations that grandma won't get her medical care, seniors will lose their Social Security, sick children will be turned away, and that a major calamity will occur if no increase in the debt ceiling is approved by August 2. In attempting to understand how and why our government has become so blatantly irresponsible....

Bernanke's repeated attempts to patch over the nation's economic weakness, rottenness, and dead wood with newly created dollars remind me of the "Potemkin village" ruse. The Soviet communists duped foreign visitors into thinking that communism was a viable and prosperous system by steering them to sham factories, stores, villages, etc. that appeared productive, bustling, and attractive. In reality, Potemkin villages were like movie sets, built to disguise the widespread poverty and backwardness that characterized life in the "workers' paradise." Official statistics insist that the Great Recession ended two years ago. Yet unemployment is....

Obama's Downgrade May Last Until 2029 By Ben Johnson, The White House Watch
|
Obama scored another historical first on Friday, becoming the first president to see the U.S. credit rating downgraded by Standard &Poor's,from AAA to AA+. While we hope his presidential reign lasts no longer than January 2013,Americans may have to live with the consequences of Obamanomics for more than a decade to come. The chairman of Standard &Poor's sovereign debt ratings,John Chambers, told ABC's program on Sunday the United States could be stuck with the lower credit rating between nine and 18 years. "We've had five governments that lost their AAA that got it back,"he said. "The amount of time that it took for those five range from 9 years to 18 years."He forecast that digging America out of the debt ditch "could take awhile,"and that it would require two things:"a stabilization of the debt as a share of the economy and eventual decline"and "more ability to reach consensus in Washington than what we're observing now." The president's commitment to deficit spending and unwillingness to make enforceable budget cuts leave a grim prognosis. But the outlook get worse. As this author noted Friday, there is a chance America will be downgraded yet again. Chambers placed the odds of a future downgrade at....

Obama's Executive Order Would Stifle the First Amendment By Daniel Hanson,FloydReports.com

The Obama administration has drafted a new,little-noticed executive order that would plainly stifle free speech. The "Disclosure of Political Spending by Government Contractors" order is still a draft, but if the administration has its way,the order will be in full force soon. Premised on the idea that sunlight disinfects,President Obama's executive order would require all bidders for federal contracts to disclose all financial contributions to candidates standing for election. The order includes all corporate contributions and all personal giving in excess of $5,000 by officers and directors of corporations concerned, and it also requires the disclosure of contributions made to third-party groups like the National Rifle Association or the Center for American Progress. The order takes direct aim at the $530 billion in federal contracts that will be issued in 2012,and it represents the latest move in a series of tactics designed to drag the Supreme Court's defense of the First Amendment....

"You know what leadership means? It means that it doesn't really matter what S&P says. We all know deep inside that no country is the same as it was 5 years ago. And the market seems to be okay with it. And as for stocks going down we were already Ralph Cramden (of Honeymooners) on thin ice. Now an infant jumped on our shoulders. It's just even more weight.
"In the end, in the end we need to address problems we know exist. A Treasury Secretary or a President should be out here not fighting S&P, not grabbing the other coach and slapping him around, taking the umpire behind the barn. He should be getting the team psyched to overcome.
"See I remember I had a professor in college. I wrote a great paper. Could never please this guy. But it made me better. Okay? We're better than this. Don't get caught up in the minutia. All this BS. In the coming days we'll sort through the repercussions of S&P's downgrade of our credit rating, including concerns about the impact a potential interest rate increase would have on our ability to service our suffocating $14.5 trillion debt.
I'm surprised that so many people seem surprised by S&P's decision. Weren't people paying attention over the last year or so when we were getting warning after warning from various credit rating agencies that this was coming? I've been writing and speaking about it myself for quite some time.
Back in December 2010,I wrote: "If the European debt crisis teaches us anything, it's that tomorrow always comes. Sooner or later, the markets will expect us to settle the bill for the enormous Obama-Pelosi-Reid spending binge. We've already been warned by the credit ratings agency Moody's that unless we get serious about reducing our deficit, we may face a downgrade of our credit rating." And again in January, in response to President Obama's State of the Union address I wrote: "With credit ratings agency Moody's warning us that the federal government must reverse the rapid growth of national debt or face losing our triple-A rating, keep in mind that a nation doesn't look so 'great' when its credit rating is in tatters."

Government Intervention for Prescription Drugs Does Not Make Them Cheaper
The prevailing assumption in Canadian drug policy is that without government intervention, the market will fail to achieve certain socially desirable outcomes, one of which is affordable access to prescription drugs, say Brett Skinner and Mark Rovere of the Fraser Institute.
Skinner and Rovere's study suggests that, on average, greater government intervention in Canada's drug markets has not provided more affordable access to prescription drugs relative to a less interventionist policy in the United States. The study also notes that if other indirect factors are taken into account, there are probably net socioeconomic costs associated with government intervention.
By observing per capita drug spending as a percentage of per capita income the study compares the average personal affordability of drug costs for Canadians and Americans. The method provides a way to estimate the actual economic burden of prescription drug costs on consumers in Canada and the United States relative to the differences in living standards.

Is Obama Smart?
A case study in stupid is as stupid does.
The aircraft was large, modern and considered among the world's safest. But that night it was flying straight into a huge thunderstorm. Turbulence was extreme, and airspeed indicators may not have been functioning properly. Worse, the pilots were incompetent. As the plane threatened to stall they panicked by pointing the nose up, losing speed when they ought to have done the opposite. It was all over in minutes.
Was this the fate of Flight 447, the Air France jet that plunged mysteriously into the Atlantic a couple of years ago? Could be. What I'm talking about here is the Obama presidency.
When it comes to piloting, Barack Obama seems to think he's the political equivalent of Charles Lindbergh, Chuck Yeager and-in a "Fly Me to the Moon" sort of way-Nat King Cole rolled into one. "I think I'm a better speech writer than my speech writers," he reportedly told an aide in 2008. "I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I'll tell you right now that I'm . . . a better political director than my political director."

On Tuesday's Program
Obama blames economy on everyone but himself...
President Obama hilariously blamed Bush, headwinds, earthquakes, the Arab Spring (wait, didn't Obama cheer those on?), conservatives, your grandma and just about everything else for the bad economy. If that wasn't lame enough, Obama made the awful decision to speak while the market was tanking (down about 400 points) - and after his horrible speech it tanked another 200 points. Genius! Glenn has the audio and reaction on radio. WATCH
Five things the media didn't mention from the S&P downgrade report - DETAILS.
Hey! London is on fire. Literally
For years Glenn was called crazy for suggesting that once the economy melted down, civil unrest would follow. Been following London? It's on fire - literally. Rioters have trashed and looted stores, cars and everything else in their path. The riots have spread to other cities outside of London - Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Nottingham.
