Debt-Ceiling Outcome Precarious As Boehner Searches for Votes
FoxNews.com | Published July 29, 2011
Washington - House Republican leaders unable to secure votes to pass the debt-reduction bill proposed by Speaker John Boehner will regroup Friday morning with a modified proposal aimed at satisfying Tea Party members who want greater cuts in federal spending before agreeing to hike the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling.
Boehner, R-Ohio, suffered a stinging setback Thursday when, for a second consecutive day, he had to postpone a vote on his proposal to extend the nation's borrowing authority for six months while cutting federal spending by nearly $1 trillion.

Are Angry 'Neighbors' Who Dumped Trash at Bank in Protest Connected to ACORN?
The Blaze | by Jonathon M. Seidl | Posted on July 29, 2011 at 7:49am
Some local homeowners in San Jose, CA became so angry this week about unkempt foreclosed home in their neighborhood that they decided to do something about it. . . .
But there may be another twist. According to author Matthew Vadum, there may be more to the "homeowners" than meets the eye. According to him, the protesters are actually part of an ACORN front group:
Nobody ever said all the criminal street thugs at ACORN were bright. The left-wing astroturfers of ACORN's new front group in California, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), were behind a garbage-dumping stunt at a branch of Wells Fargo bank in San Jose, Calif. News reports consistently depict the players as angry homeowners who spontaneously erupted in a spasm of righteous indignation. As if.
Vadum says the "make the banks pay" sign (with "ACCE" listed on the bottom) and chant tipped him off.

Al Sharpton Blows Gasket on the Air After Caller Slams Him for Spreading Lies About the Debt Ceiling
The Blaze | by Tiffany Gabbay | Posted on July 28, 2011 at 7:04pm
Yes, there definitely must be something in the air, as key Democrats seem to be coming apart at the seams lately with a string of rants directed against Republicans. This week alone there has been a kind of explosion of such tirades. Following suit, Rev. Al Sharpton also had his own bona fide meltdown after someone called in to the radio segment on which Sharpton appeared to slam the reverend for allegedly propagating lies about the debt ceiling.
The caller, who told Sharpton that he had marched for him and voted for then presidential candidate Barack Obama, told Sharpton that he was "deceiving" people about Social Security.

Press Release:
AFDI/SIOA 9/11 Freedom Rally:
Stand Against Ground Zero Mosque, and Durban III, Stand for America
NEW YORK, July 6: The human rights organization American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) will be hosting its second annual 9/11 Freedom Rally on September 11 at 3pm at Park Place and West Broadway.
Free citizens are coming from all over the U.S. to attend the rally. "It is crucial to stand for freedom on this tenth anniversary of the heinous 9/11 jihad attacks," said AFDI Executive Director Pamela Geller. "We must show the jihadists we are unbowed in the defense of freedom."
AFDI and its Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) program are encouraging all Americans to stand against the Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero and the anti-Semitic Durban III conference that will be held in New York City at the same time, and for American values on the tenth anniversary of the worst attack ever on American soil.
The confirmed list of speakers includes 9/11 family members Alexander and Maureen Santora, who lost their firefighter son Christopher; Sally Regenhard, whose son Christian was killed on 9/11; Nelly Braginsky, who lost her son Alexander; and others.
Other speakers include former U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton (video message); the courageous ex-Muslim human rights activist Wafa Sultan; war hero and North Carolina Congressional candidate Ilario Pantano; former prosecutor and bestselling author Andrew C. McCarthy; popular radio host Joyce Kaufman; Darla Dawald, National Director of the Patriot Action Network; James Lafferty of the Virginia Anti-Sharia Taskforce (VAST); Coptic Christian activist Joseph Nassralla; Iraqi ex-Muslim Paul Gaynos.
Hosting the rally are Pamela Geller, publisher of the acclaimed AtlasShrugs.com blog, executive director of AFDI and SIOA, and author of Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance (WND Books); and AFDI/SIOA associate director Robert Spencer, the bestselling author and director of Jihad Watch.
Building the Ground Zero mosque is not an issue of religious freedom, but of resisting an effort to insult the victims of 9/11 and to establish a beachhead for political Islam and Islamic supremacism in New York. Cordoba Initiative board member imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is an open proponent of Sharia, Islamic law, a system that denies the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law. Given the thousands of triumphal mosques that have been built on the cherished sites of conquered peoples throughout Islamic history, the mosque leaders' claim that this mosque would be understood differently by Muslims worldwide lack foundation.
The Durban III conference follows upon two previous conferences that scapegoated and demonized the state of Israel in service of Islamic jihad and Islamic supremacist interests. The rally will defend Israel against the defamation to which it will be subjected at this conference. It will also call upon the city to remove roadblocks to the reconstruction of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on 9/11 and since then mired in bureaucratic red tape that has prevented its rebuilding - in stark contrast to the help Mayor Bloomberg and other city officials have given to the Ground Zero Mosque project.
AFDI/SIOA is one of America's foremost organizations defending human rights, religious liberty, and the freedom of speech against Islamic supremacist intimidation and attempts to bring elements of Sharia to the United States.

"We have gone to the capitals of our states and to the capitals of our government. We have talked to all the power brokers. The only power broker, the only seat of government that can and will solve this problem with or without us is God. It is time to return inside the walls that surround Jerusalem and stand with people of all faiths, all around the world," Glenn said in his initial announcement.
"In August, whether I'm there with seven people or 10 people or there alone, I will stand. I ask you to join me. I also ask you to take this message globally, to take this to every corner of the earth. If you have family living overseas, this is not an America solution. This is a people of faith solution. Glenn Beck Restoring Courage Viewing Party : On Wednesday, August 24 we will be streaming the event at The Moose and we're inviting everyone to come down and share this together. Many of us went to the Restoring Honor event last year and we were deeply moved by the day's events. Being with others we know made this even more special. Although we are not going to travel to Israel, we are hoping that we can recreate that atmosphere here in Bucks County. We are still in the development stages of this event and would like to hear your suggestions on how to have it work out. And if you can help with the planning, set up and the break down, please let us know. These events are even more special when you are part of the effort to make it come off well for everyone who comes. Be sure to invite your friends and family to come as well. This would be a great opportunity to meet other patriots and meet some new ones. Let us know you are coming on our Facebook event post .

Dear RedState Reader:
If you want to stop the GOP from taking a bad deal out of fear, go to http://www.redstate.com/action right now and call your member of Congress to oppose John Boehner's plan.
This morning took an interesting turn of events. First the Wall Street Journal called us hobbits. Then Bill Kristol proclaimed us "pro-Obama." Then John Boehner told his members to get their "asses in line."
And then a handful of Republican members of congress started attacking me, this site, conservative members of congress, conservative staffers in congress, and conservative organizations including the Heritage Foundation, the Club for Growth, FreedomWorks, Americans for Prosperity, and the list goes on and on.
Friends, this is why the fight is so important - the legacy of the Republican Party.
During the Bush Administration, many conservatives got co-opted. It became more important to be on the team than fight on principle. Consequently, we got No Child Left Behind, Medicare Part D, TARP, the GM bailout, etc.
We almost got stuck with Harriet Miers and immigration reform.
When the GOP was finally tossed for its "culture of corruption," there were very few Republicans standing in Washington that the GOP felt it could trust. Mike Pence was one. Jeff Flake another. Jim DeMint for sure.
So conservatives rallied to send them reinforcements - Tom Graves, Dave Schwiekert, Tim Huelskamp, Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, etc.
The GOP told us they had turned from their big spending ways. John Boehner went so far last year to say he appreciated outside conservative groups holding their feet to the fire.
And then today -

RedState Morning Briefing
For July 29, 2011
1. The Worst Negotiators
I cannot decide who the worst negotiators are, Republican leaders or House conservatives.
John Boehner's plan couldn't get the votes last night so Boehner had to agree to add language conditioning a vote on a balanced budget amendment - an amendment House Republicans said could not pass so there was no reason to pursue Cut, Cap, and Balance. The vote will now be today.
The vote now is all about fear and messaging - fear of blame and a very weak message. In fact, the House will send a weaker message than Cut, Cap, and Balance. It'll also get less votes in either House than Cut, Cap, and Balance.
Last night on Sean Hannity's show, Senator Rand Paul said around a dozen Republican Senators will vote against Boehner's plan. And they must. Because if they do not, I have a sneaking suspicion that Harry Reid will strip out the balanced budget amendment language and the second vote on the debt ceiling, send it back to the House, and get it passed with a hundred Democrats.
House Conservatives who don't like the plan, but are willing to trade their vote for a balanced budget amendment are about to be force fed the plan they don't like by Harry Reid and all with their help.
Frankly, the House Republicans have turned this vote into a cult of personality vote. It is not about saving the Republic, fighting Obama, or cutting the debt. And you remember that when they vote for it.
John Boehner has convinced House Republicans that they are both getting a good deal and that if it fails, Boehner himself is in jeopardy. So House Republicans will vote for the plan, see the Senate either kill it or butcher it, and then be stuck. It's all about John Boehner now - nothing else.
To console themselves, Boehner is going to give House conservatives their balanced budget amendment language and then have them do the very thing they promised they'd fight - fund Obamacare.
2. Five (Fairly) Short Points
(1) House Republicans are walking into an enormous trap. The Boehner plan is sufficiently similar to the Reid plan, in virtually all important respects, that its passage will lead to the following compromise:
- The adoption of Boehner's ten years of sham cuts, which will be ephemeral beyond fiscal year 2012. Even John McCain said tonight that Gramm-Rudman (whose "sequestration" provisions are the enforcement mechanism for Boehner) became worthless because Congress just started declaring emergencies.
- A commission which will report out large tax increases which cannot be filibustered. The "deciders" on the commission will be six Pelosi/Reid people and one squish Republican, who will be corralled into submission by:
- A "trigger" which will make the pressure currently being applied to Congress seem small by comparison.
(2) Unless you can guarantee that it will go to the states, a guarantee of a losing vote on the balanced budget amendment is worthless.
(3) Dick Morris is correct that if Tuesday comes and goes, with only a shut-down of unessential government agencies, the American people will see Obama's fear-mongering for what it is.
(4) Furthermore, as 2008 taught us, the GOP can sell all of its principles and spend the better part of a trillion dollars and the stock market will still continue to fall -- particularly since Standard & Poor's is about to downgrade the U.S. for being too timid in debt reduction.
(5) Finally, Obama is currently reeling from his poor stewardship. For Republicans to capitulate and give him a "compromise" will reset him on a glide path to reelection. The liberal media is currently "spinning" that Republicans have won, but, after they lose, their surrender will be reported for what it was.
3. Here's the Latest Democrat Plan
Well, we really stuck it to the Democrats today. Instead of passing Cut, Cap, and Balance, a plan that will never pass the Senate and would have foisted the blame of a default upon us (supposedly), we orchestrated a plan to really own them. We came up with Boehner plan 2.0 that..well, .....will not pass the Senate - and will force a default, unless we agree to a watered down version of the watered down version.
As of late this afternoon, the underpinnings of a compromise Democrat plan were beginning to materialize.
4. RINOs
I see a lot of John Boehner Plan supporters mockingly referring to guys like Mike Pence as "RINOs".
I have not and will not.
Let's be clear that while a number of us in the past few days have been called hobbits and "pro-Obama" this remains a disagreement among guys who are typically friends.
I disagree with Mike Pence and Allen West on this one. They are not RINOs and anyone who thinks they are is as deserving as the mental ward as John Boehner and his leadership team for dividing a group of people who stood united last week. The problem as I see it is that we have a lot of good guys who are being team players at the expense of their principles

Susan's Paul Ryan Medicare Pamphlet - please print this and give it to your contacts
SAVING MEDICARE
Since 1964, our nation's senior citizens have relied on Medicare to ensure access to healthcare. Now the program is going broke -- and it is going broke fast.
It began spending its reserves in 2008 when payouts exceeded dollars collected for the program. [cite]
Predictions for exhaustion of the reserve vary, with 2024 identified by the Social Security Administration in the Trustees 2011 report. [cite]
The Democrat response is to reduce the amount Medicare reimburses physicians for their services. [cite]
This will result in fewer participating physicians and the physicians continuing in the program seeing fewer Medicare patients.
Patients will wait longer and have fewer choices in seeing a doctor.
If this makes access to care sufficiently untenable, or if Medicare does not get on viable financial footing, it will be administered through ObamaCare[cite].
This would include cost controls by a 15-member board of bureaucrats deciding wich treatments, drugs, and surgeries patients can receive.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget, has a plan which saves Medicare with no disruption to today's seniors and reasonable changes for future retirees.
The Ryan Plan is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. The future of our seniors' healthcare is too important to be decided on misinformation. Here are the facts about Medicare and the Ryan Plan.
The Ryan Plan in a Nutshell
Those currently retired and those close to retirement (55 and over) will see no change from the existing Medicare system. Existing physician reimbursement flaws will be corrected to encourage physicians to continue participating in the system.[cite]
On retirement, those currently under 55 will be provided vouchers from the government to help pay for health insurance. Voucher amounts will be based in part on income, with wealthier individuals receiving less assistance. Risk pools [cite] will be created to ensure that insurance companies will provide coverage to seniors, despite their generally higher use of medical care.
The result is retirees will have a system that gives them options, similar to that which members of Congress use and which will include options similar to Medicare Advantage, the popular plan eliminated by Obamacare. [cite]
The Ryan Plan Incorporates These Important Points
It is important that we
Plan now for changes, to avoid chaos later
The medicare system is running out of money. Change is coming, one way or another.
Pretending we can continue as we are is not an option, it is a recipe for disaster. The longer we wait to make changes, the greater the disruption to current and future retires, the more abruptly the changes will have to be implemented, and the fewer options we will have.
By implementing the Ryan Plan now, we will
- maintain the existing system for current retirees and for individuals 55 and over
- provide a sustainable, quality system for future retirees.
It is important that we...
Preserve the existing system, unchanged, for current retirees and workers 55 and older
This bears repeating:
- Under the Ryan Plan, if you are retired, your Medicare coverage will not change.
- If you are over 55, Medicare as it exists today will be there for you when you retire.
- And the Ryan Plan provides for quality health insurance coverage upon retirement for those currently under 55.
It is important that we...
Maintain availability of insurance coverage for future retirees
Since individuals generally require more medical care as they age, it tends to be difficult for older individuals to find private health insurance that will cover them. That is one reason our existing Medicare system is considered so important for many. The Ryan Plan creates risk pools which encourage multiple insurance companies to offer health coverage to those of retirement age.
It is important that we...
Maintain affordability
Individuals have paid into the Medicare system with the promise that coverage will be there for them when they retire. Unfortunately, we are facing an economic crisis in this country and Medicare is a significant part of the problem. To save the system for everyone and to avert broader economic calamity, in the future wealthier Americans will have to bear a greater portion of their healthcare burden.
It is important that we...
Make it feasible for doctors to participate in Medicare
Currently in many areas of the country physicans are reimbursed for Medicare patients at a rate that does not cover their expenses. Recent changes put forth by the Democrats further reduce reimbursement. [cite] This is not sustainable for any business and as a result increasing numbers of physicians are discontinuing their participation in the Medcare program. Patients are finding that their physician is no longer a Medicare provider and when they look for another physician it is increasingly difficult for them to find a Medicare provider who is accepting new patients and can see them in a reasonable time. [cite]. The Ryan plan fixes the reimbursement problem, making it feasible for physicians to continue participating in Medicare.
It is important that we...
Keep medical decisions between patients and doctors, not remote government panels
The Ryan plan harnesses the free market and puts choice in the hands of the patient. Retirees will be able to pick the insurance plan that best meets their needs, applying government vouchers toward premium costs. Medical decisions would be made in consultation with their personal physician, based on the individual's situation and preferences.

The clash of civilizations is also a clash of histories. The Western view of history is progressive. A march upward from barbarism to greater phases of enlightenment. This view is fairly modern and fairly liberal, yet closely associated with the success of Western civilization. In progressive history, human techniques from the technological to the social can be used to improve life and make the world a better place. The Islamic view of history is regressive. A lost golden age followed by unbelief and heresy, culminating in a struggle by the believers to restore Islamic dominance. Everything that humans do independently of Islam makes the world a worse place. The perfect touchstone of history was Mohammed. And the only way that history can be set right is by restoring the lost and corrupted caliphates. Both the progressive and the regressive views of history have their limitations. The progressive views tends to unrealistically overestimate its own progress. It does this by dismissing 99 percent of what came before it as bunk and barbarism, and places itself at the pinnacle of history. Using the Dark Ages as a prop, history is divided between the medieval and the enlightenment, superstition and knowledge. Overlooked is the knowledge that civilization and barbarism actually come in cycles. And that the ancients were not stupid or ignorant, often they were quite sophisticated. But they were unable to retain, integrate and build on what they had until it formed the core of a stable and self-sustaining civilization. Despite our technological sophistication, we are actually poorer than them in vital areas, and there is every sign that our own civilization will implode the way that theirs did.

Yesterday, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter T. King (R-NY) continued to follow through on the promise he made at the start of the 112th Congress-to address the threat of radical Islam in America. Yesterday, he held his third in a series of hearings on Muslim-American radicalization, this one entitled: "Al Shabaab: Recruitment and Radicalization within the Muslim American Community and the Threat to the Homeland." I attended the hearing so that I could offer you a first-hand report. As I noted after Chairman King's second hearing (covering radicalization within the U.S. prison system), we didn't see the full-blown circus that attended his first discussion on radical Islam. However, I have to say that the behavior of some congressional members of the Committee was appalling. This is a serious subject that demands serious examination, and it is deeply disappointing to watch some of the members of the Committee act with the disrespect they showed yesterday. The discussion yesterday was based on the result of what Chairman King called a "lengthy investigation the Committee has conducted into the threat the U.S. homeland faces from al-Shabaab, the Somalia affiliate of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda and Anwar al-Aulaqi's al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)." The report found, among other concerning things, that over 40 Muslim-Americans and 20 Canadians have been recruited and radicalized by al-Shabaab. Click HERE to read the Committee's full report. The purpose of yesterday's hearing by Chairman King was clear: We see a problem developing that has severe implications for our national security; we take this seriously; we need to address it NOW. The witnesses for this particular hearing had varied but formidable backgrounds: Mr. Ahmed Hussen - National President, Canadian Somali Congress. Mr. Hussen stated that his group is a "national advocacy organization that advocates on issues of importance to the 200,000 strong Canadian Somali community." He told the Committee that as a Canadian Muslim he is "proud of his heritage" and thanked Chairman King for holding a hearing on this critical issue as, he said, it helps the Somali community, both in the U.S. and Canada, fight against those who wish to do either nation harm. Further, he said that it is important that the leaders in the Somali-Canadian and Somali-American communities "emphasize integration and the adherence to and respect for American and Canadian values and not those that promote separation, extremism and victimology." See Mr. Hussen's full testimony HERE. Mr. Thomas Joscelyn - Senior Fellow, Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Mr. Joscelyn noted that a majority of Somali-Americans do not support al-Shabaab, nor its agenda. That said, he believes that there is a serious danger to our nation from al-Shabaab and though there is "great confusion here in the U.S. as to whether or not Shabaab is really a part of al Qaeda's international terrorist network...my view is that the link is much stronger than some counterterrorism analysts realize." See Mr. Joscelyn's full testimony HERE. Mr. William Anders Folk - Former Assistant United States Attorney, District of Minnesota. Mr. Folk agreed with the other witnesses that al-Shabaab is a serious threat to the United States and that to fight them and their supporters, the U.S. "must engage in a multi-faceted approach that utilizes all of the United States' abilities, including military, intelligence, law enforcement and diplomatic options. Further, this effort must be carried out in Somalia, the Horn of Africa, and the United States." See Mr. Folk's full testimony HERE. Mr. Tom Smith - Chief of Police, Saint Paul, Minnesota. Chief Smith updated the Committee about efforts taking place in St. Paul to combat al-Shabaab's impact on the Somali-American community there. During his testimony, he noted another problem with which they are dealing: Somali girls not only in Saint Paul and Minneapolis, but also in Tennessee and other states are being sexually trafficked. See Chief Smith's full testimony HERE. The discussion during yesterday's hearing was a critical one. Again, what was tremendously disappointing to me was the recurring rude and disrespectful behavior (both to the Chairman and the witnesses) by certain Members of the Committee. This has happened at each of Mr. King's hearings on Islamic radicalization. Though national security should be a non-partisan issue, once again, the perpetrators were all Democrats. To me, it demonstrated a serious problem: how unknowledgeable, disconnected and disinterested some Members of Congress are about a very real and dangerous threat to our nation. Some examples: Rep. Shiela Jackson-Lee (D-TX) - as usual, was bent on making a show out of her comments instead of adding substance to the dialogue and learning from the experience of the witnesses. As during prior hearings, she made formal requests that the Chairman instead hold hearings on right-wing extremist organizations, as well as one on Rupert Murdoch. When her comment period expired and the Chairman informed her that it had, she continued speaking over him. It took several attempts of "the gentle lady's time has expired" to get her to settle down. The cameras were rolling and she knew it. Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA) - commented that the scope of the Chairman's series of hearings is discriminatory. Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY) - argued that radicalization is "cross-cultural, cross-religious, and cross-ethnic" and that if we focus on only one group we open ourselves up to "the disdain of others." Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA) - noted to Chairman King that this was his third hearing on the issue of Islamic radicalization within the U.S. and said "point made. Let's move on." But the most outrageous comments during the hearing, came from Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who does not serve on the Committee but asked (and was granted) time to speak. [NOTE: The Chairman did not grant the same, this time, for Rep. Keith Ellison, another legislative showman, who dramatically broke down in tears during King's first hearing.] Early in his comments, Mr. Green asked all of the witnesses if they had ever heard of Jihad Jane. When they replied that they had, he continued his line of questioning, asking them what her hair color was, her eye color, her height, and finally, her complexion. He asked the witnesses if acknowledging that she was "as she is called in America, a white woman" took them "out of their comfort zone." Clearly, he was insinuating that the Chairman and the committee were racist by focusing on Somali-Americans. When Chairman King responded that the questions had absolutely no basis and made no sense to him, Rep. Green shot back, "I didn't expect it to make sense to you." I do think it is worthwhile to watch the full hearing, so you can see how the issue was taken seriously by the witnesses and some Members of Congress, such as Rep. Chip Cravaack (R-MN), Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX) and Rep. Dan Lundgren (R-CA), as well as those I mention above, who were only interested in distractions. This hearing took place at the courtesy of your tax dollars and you have a right to know what your elected officials are doing on Capitol Hill. You can view the full hearing HERE or by going to the House Homeland Security website HERE and clicking on "Webcast." If you like what your Member of Congress is doing remember to let him or her know-and the very same if you don't. As the Chairman noted in his Opening Statement, which we sent out to our full membership shortly after it was released (click HERE to view it in its entirety) "I will not back down from holding these hearings. I will continue to hold these hearings so long as I am the Chairman of this Committee. I...owe it to all the friends, neighbors, and constituents I lost on September 11th. I will not back down." We need to be appreciative of Mr. King's past and future efforts in the U.S. Congress on identifying and addressing radical Islam within the U.S. Contrary to what some Members of the Committee claim, he never has and never will focus on the peaceful Muslims living in America. This is not about them and, frankly, these hearings will benefit them. These discussions are about identifying and immobilizing those individuals who follow an ideology that is contrary and dangerous to the freedoms afforded by our U.S. Constitution-those who strive to do harm to our nation and our citizens. Finally, we need to let Chairman King and all other Members of Congress who continue to speak out about this issue know that a grateful nation-certainly including the 170,000 members of ACT! for America-is behind them 100 percent. As for those Members of Congress who do not take this seriously, who seem intent only on making a mockery of these hearings, they need to hear from their constituents too. They need to be told that they took an oath to defend the Constitution and they need to start taking these discussions about Islamic radicalization seriously.

Fellow patriots,
In this New York Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/26/opinion/26iht-edcohen26.html?_r=1 ) Representative Peter King and Newt Gingrich are harshly blamed for inspiring Breivik's murderous rampage. In another (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/25/us/25debate.html?pagewanted=all ), the New York Times also blames Robert Spencer, who is the author of Jihad Watch and numerous books about the dangers of Islam, for inspiring Breivik.
However, the New York Times neglected to mention that the New York Times itself was cited SIX TIMES in Breivik's manifesto. Apparently, according to the New York Times' own standard, it is just as blameworthy for Breivik's attack as any of the people its articles blamed.
You can verify this for yourself by viewing the manuscript here ( http://www.kevinislaughter.com/wp-content/uploads/2083+-+A+European+Declaration+of+Independence.pdf ) and then doing a Find on New York Times . The citations will pop right up so you can see them for yourself without having to read the entire vile 1500-page document.
The point here is that it is ridiculous to blame anyone who simply reports facts for the actions of a crazy man. The alternative is to refuse to report on Islamic violence, oppression of non-Muslims, and Shariah-based abuse of women, simply to avoid being blamed for the actions of crazy people who read the news.
Islam's apologists in the new media have been trying to discredit everyone who is sounding the alarm about Islam because of the actions of a crazy man. This is the same kind of logic used in the 1960s by bigots who tried to blame Rev. Martin Luther King for the race riots. The point here is that, in both cases, there was a problem, and there were acceptable responses and unacceptable responses to the problem. But it is absurd to blame the people who respond acceptably to a problem for the actions of people who respond unacceptably.
Hopefully, you'll find these thoughts useful if anyone starts to somehow connect your concerns about Islam to this dangerous lunatic.
Although I'm not a big fan of Ann Coulter, I have to give her credit for calling attention to the hypocrisy of the New York Times. Her article below is the one that broke the news, which I personally verified before sharing it with you.

New York Times Reader Kills Dozens in Norway
by Ann Coulter
07/27/2011
The New York Times wasted no time in jumping to conclusions about Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian who staged two deadly attacks in Oslo last weekend, claiming in the first two paragraphs of one story that he was a "gun-loving," "right-wing," "fundamentalist Christian," opposed to "multiculturalism."
It may as well have thrown in "Fox News-watching" and "global warming skeptic."
This was a big departure from the Times' conclusion-resisting coverage of the Fort Hood shooting suspect, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. Despite reports that Hasan shouted "Allahu Akbar!" as he gunned down his fellow soldiers at a military medical facility in 2009, only one of seven Times articles on Hasan so much as mentioned that he was a Muslim.

House Delays Key Vote on Boehner Debt Plan
The endgame at hand, House Republicans struggled Thursday to pass legislation to prevent a looming government default while slicing nearly $1 trillion from federal spending. Senate Democrats pledged to scuttle the bill - if the GOP could get it through the House - in hopes of forcing a final compromise.
As afternoon debate headed toward evening, GOP leaders ordered an unexplained halt on the measure as Speaker John Boehner summoned a string of recalcitrant rank-and-file Re(publicans to his office.
Asked what he and Boehner had talked about, Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said, "I think that's rather obvious. .. There's negotiations going on."

Why the Tea Party is unyielding on the debt ceiling By Judson Phillips The Washington Post The liberal media have gone to warp speed in their defense of President Obama and their attacks on the Tea Party. We are "extreme" and "dangerous." Republicans are "afraid of" the Tea Party. And more. The narrative in the media is that Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner were close to a deal last week that would have resolved the debt-ceiling crisis. It would have allowed for continued borrowing and more "revenue," the euphemism of the day for tax increases. And the Tea Party said no. Read The Full Story

Had Norway not surrendered to the anti-self-defense nuts, and allowed Norwegians to protect themselves by legally carrying guns, the massacre might well have been prevented. Angle to McCain: Wait a minute, you campaigned for me in 2010. Now you're insulting me and the Tea Party? By Mark Tapscott The Washington Examiner Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, blasted opponents of the Boehner plan yesterday, borrowing a phrase from a Wall Street Journal editorial that described such opposition as representing "the kind of crack political thinking that turned Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell into GOP Senate nominees." Angle has now released a response, which, among much else, reminds McCain that in the end the Hobbits actually won the day and saved the world. The former Nevada GOP senate nominee called herself a "TEA Party Hobbit." This could be the start of a new branding movement among Tea Partiers: Read The Full Story:

From: Gary L. Bauer
Do We Want Obama To Win?
Here we go again. Republicans and conservatives in the last 48 hours have formed the battle formation they seem to prefer the most: THE CIRCULAR FIRING SQUAD.
John McCain took to the Senate floor yesterday and blasted Tea Party purists. Oh sure, he took shots at Harry Reid too. But the media predictably highlighted only the slap down of the Tea Party folks.
How did that help the cause, senator?
A Tea Party leader spoke at a rally on Capitol Hill yesterday and demanded that Speaker Boehner step down from his leadership post. Really? And be replaced by whom? No Speaker - not even "Captain America" - could perform miracles and run the U.S. government from the House of Representatives.
How did firing at Boehner help the cause?
Conservative websites like the Free Republic (which I love) were filled with postings from grassroots activists, many demanding cuts of $6 trillion this fiscal year. Many posters threatened never to vote Republican again. Talk of a third party filled the blogosphere.
How would permanently splitting the conservative movement help the cause? Is it realistic to think that conservatives could in two years, with control of just the House of Representatives, repeal 40 years of big government liberalism?
Reality check for John McCain, my Tea Party friends and fellow conservatives: The mess we are in is not the fault of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell. America is not headed toward a cliff because of the Tea Party movement. We are in this position because the man in the Oval Office is willing to do virtually anything to get his way - even when it deeply damages our constitutional republic.
He has ignored federal court rulings (the drilling ban). His lawyers argue that our Constitution requires us to buy what he wants us to buy (the insurance mandate). He and his attorney general have "decided" that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional - a call only the Supreme Court can make.
He routinely uses raw class warfare in an attempt to divide our country. He has alienated our allies while apologizing to our enemies. He has accumulated more debt in less time than any president before him, and he demands more spending now. While jobs evaporate, he demands higher taxes on job creators. The list goes on.
Conservatives do not run Washington, D.C. Obama does. The media carry his water, and countless bureaucrats rush to work every day excited to impose his regulations on our economy and our families. As each day passes, there are more federal judges willing to do his bidding because he appointed them.
Disagreements on strategy are inevitable. But there should be no disagreement on our most important goal - ending the Obama presidency, taking control of the Senate and maintaining control of the House. Only then can we do the things that we desperately need to do.
Disband the circular firing squad. Tone down the family feud and aim your ire where it belongs - at Obama and his big government army.

Bam, it's time to cut spending - period

President Obama is demanding that the debt ceiling be raised by a whopping amount -- two or three times the normal increase -- to let the federal government keep on borrowing past the 2012 election. The ceiling is generally raised once or twice a year, but Obama claims he wants to keep it "out of politics" in an election year.
Of course he does: Out-of-control government spending is the most important issue facing voters -- but also one that undermines his chances of re-election.
The 2012 election should be a referendum on the president's spending and borrowing record. In his first year, Obama pushed federal spending from 20 percent of gross domestic product to 25 percent. Only once before did federal spending reach that level -- when the United States plunged into World War II.
Add in state and local spending, and government programs now consume 42 percent of GDP. In other words, 42 percent of all we produce going to work every day goes for government. And this is before the costly new entitlements created in the Obama health law go into effect in 2014.

Details of rival plans on spending and debt
By The Associated Press -
House Republicans and Senate Democrats are pressing competing but broadly similar plans to pair an increase in the nation's $14.3 trillion borrowing limit with spending cuts and to create a special committee to recommend bigger savings for a vote later this year.
The chief difference is the size of the immediate increase in the debt limit. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid's $2.7 trillion debt increase plan would keep the government afloat into 2013, while Republican House Speaker John Boehner's $900 billion increase would require action next year.
Highlights of the competing plans:

Paul Krugman wants Conservative Thought Censored

The Left is Running Scared

It's not news that The New York Times' outspoken liberal columnist Paul Krugman is calling conservatives "crazy." What's news is that he believes the media is giving too much air time to conservative views, aiding and abetting what he describes as "the cult that is destroying America."
According to Krugman, refusing to raise taxes on small businesses, family farmers and other job creators is "insane":
"We have a crisis in which the right is making insane demands, while the president and Democrats in Congress are bending over backward to be accommodating - offering plans that are all spending cuts and no taxes, plans that are far to the right of public opinion."
Learn more: fiscal conservatism is what our country needs right now.
Mr. Krugman, who thinks President Obama is a "moderate conservative," believes it is a "moral failure" to report dissenting opinions. It would be a moral failure to not point out the truth, which is that the past two and a half years have racked up more debt and more spending than previously imaginable.
It would be a moral failure to allow the current situation to go by without seriously changing how Washington spends your money, and your children's money.
Learn more: now is the time for spending cuts.
We have the chance to save the American Dream for our children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, the Washington Establishment and the Liberal Elite are blasting principled conservatives in their effort to preserve the big-government status quo.
Heritage Action for America is committed to the fight against overspending and overtaxing. We're standing with you, the American people, in ensuring that the American dream remains within reach for your children and grandchildren.
Together we can make a difference in their future, get involved today.

Some Austerity
Federal spending would rise despite proposed "cuts."
'It is clear we must enter an age of austerity," House minority leader Nancy Pelosi mourned as she endorsed Harry Reid's proposal for raising the debt ceiling. Austerity? Really?
The Reid plan would theoretically cut spending by $2.7 trillion over ten years. Even if that were true, it would still allow our national debt to increase by some $10 trillion over the next decade. But, of course, the $2.7 trillion figure is mostly fiction. About $1 trillion of the savings would come from the eventual end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, savings that were going to occur anyway. Senator Reid might just as well have added another $1 trillion in savings by not invading Pakistan.
Another $400 billion comes not from cuts but from assuming reduced interest payments. And, of course, there are $40 billion in unspecified "program-integrity savings," meaning the "waste, fraud, and abuse" that is the last refuge of every phony budget cutter. The plan rejects any changes to Medicare and Social Security, despite the fact that the unfunded liabilities from those two programs could run as high as $110 trillion. But those liabilities generally fall outside the ten-year budget window, so Reid - unlike our children and grandchildren - doesn't have to worry about them.
That leaves about $1.2 trillion in discretionary and defense spending reductions over the next ten years. Let's put that in perspective. This year the federal government will spend $3.8 trillion. Our deficit is roughly $1.6 trillion. Our national debt exceeds $14.3 trillion, not counting unfunded entitlement liabilities. We are talking about raising the debt ceiling to $16.9 trillion. This month alone the federal government will borrow $134 billion. Reid's cuts would average roughly $120 billion per year.
This is austerity?

The Obama EPA's Brave New Future
Say goodbye to cars and trucks as you know them. Say hello to a brave new future ushered in by the Environmental Protection Agency. It's one where the federal government reshapes a major U.S. industry by administrative fiat, all in pursuit of a policy goal that will cost money, jobs, and lives-all to satisfy the left's environmentalist factions while dishing out taxpayer dollars to an Obama-favored unionized industry.
That industry is the auto industry, and the Obama Administration is yet again using the mighty fist of the federal government to recast it in its own image. The Washington Post reports that the Obama Administration and the auto industry have reached agreement on new federal regulations that would raise fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks, hitting an average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025-a 40 percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to today.

A Tale of Two Shale States
Pennsylvania's gain vs. New York's missed opportunity.
Politicians wringing their hands over how to create more jobs might study the shale boom along the New York and Pennsylvania border. It's a case study in one state embracing economic opportunity, while the other has let environmental politics trump development.
The Marcellus shale formation-65 million acres running through Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania and southern New York-offers one of the biggest natural gas opportunities. Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, a Democrat, recognized that potential and set up a regulatory framework to encourage and monitor natural gas drilling, a strategy continued by Republican Tom Corbett.
More than 2,000 wells have been drilled in the Keystone State since 2008, and gas production surged to 81 billion cubic feet in 2009 from five billion in 2007. A new Manhattan Institute report by University of Wyoming professor Timothy Considine estimates that a typical Marcellus well generates some $2.8 million in direct economic benefits from natural gas company purchases; $1.2 million in indirect benefits from companies engaged along the supply chain; another $1.5 million from workers spending their wages, or landowners spending their royalty payments; plus $2 million in federal, state and local taxes. Oh, and 62 jobs.

Editorial: Gov't Welfare Widens The Wealth Gap
Posted 07/26/2011
Poverty: The gap in wealth between white Americans and minorities is the widest it's ever been, a new report says. Could it be that the government, while intending to help those in need, in fact ends up hurting them?
New Census data show that the recent economic crash has erased decades of minority gains in wealth. The net worth of whites is now 20 times higher than for blacks and 18 times higher than for Hispanics, both records.
For white households, the median net worth (assets minus liabilities) in 2009 was $113,149. That compares to $6,325 for Hispanics and $5,677 for black Americans.

Americans for Prosperity recently sent a letter to the House Financial Services Committee urging them to get to work on winding down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As you may be aware, the U.S. Treasury has already spent $154 billion on the two government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) and regulators claim that billions more will be needed to keep the two afloat.

Be sure to call your Member of Congress and let them know you want to them to support legislation that will dismantle Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Here are some of the highlights of the letter:
Members of the Committee largely disagree about the best way to proceed in winding down and phasing out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Some believe that if the GSEs are eliminated, there will be a vacuum in the mortgage market that the private sector will not be able to fill.
The Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises has marked-up legislation that would wind down support for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but language offered by Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.) would require a "viable private secondary market" to be in place before reforms can occur.
As long as government-backed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are around to dominate the market, private securitization will almost never meet Rep. Campbell's unrealistic threshold. The language is designed solely to delay reform.
Waiting for the housing market to recover and a "viable private secondary market" to emerge before eliminating Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is backward logic at best. The housing market will remain anemic until these GSEs are eliminated. Only then will there be enough incentives for the private sector to step up and create a flow of capital in the housing market.

Making Obamacare Bureaucrats Play by the Rules
In one of the most illuminating moments of the Obamacare debate, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi said "we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." Pelosi meant that we would learn the truth about the bill after the controversy had died down. However, her words apply to Obamacare more than she knew. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is not really a law, and we still do not know its full affects.
Laws set norms to regulate conduct. Obamacare, like most major laws, does not really do this. Instead, it authorizes administrators to make laws, insofar as they make the rules and regulations to govern our conduct. The public will not know the full implications of Obamacare until after unelected-and usually unknown-agency officials make the rules.
In response to these concerns, Representative David Schweikert (R-AZ) has introduced H.R. 1432, the Creating Sunshine, Participation, and Accountability for Our Nation Act, which would provide for greater transparency in agency rulemaking. As Gary Lawson explains, H.R. 1432 mandates that any rule issued pursuant to Obamacare must be made during public hearings in a trial setting, presided over by an officer confirmed by the Senate who will hold judge-like authority.

Alexander's Essay - July 28, 2011
What Power to Tax and Spend?
The Question Americans Should Be Asking
"The Constitution, which at any time exists, 'till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole People, is sacredly obligatory upon all." --George Washington
Redacted
Barack Hussein Obama's refusal to send a Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) to the states as condition of House Speaker John Boehner's support for raising the national debt ceiling has pushed federal funding negotiations to the precipice of the Treasury Department's 2 August default deadline. Boehner has retreated on the House's "cut, cap and balance" plan and its BBA provision is no longer a stipulation in negotiations. He has also reduced the "cuts" in the House plan, and may acquiesce to the larger debt ceiling increase the Democrats want in order to avoid another debt ceiling battle prior to the 2012 elections.
Notably, most House conservatives, including the Tea Party freshmen, are standing with Boehner, choosing a pragmatic approach until 2012, when they hope to strengthen their numbers in the House and Senate, and retake the presidency.
The current budget debate was the first serious consideration of a BBA since it was advocated by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s and later passed by the House as part of the Republican Contract with America in 1995. (At that time, it received 300 votes, including 72 Democrats.)
Now, as then, Leftist Democrats in the Senate have created a formidable gauntlet to its passage because it would severely undermine their power to redistribute wealth, power that is the only assurance of their perpetual re-election. A BBA would sunset their dynasty.
So, where to from here, and what question should conservatives be asking? First, let me offer a brief review of the current budget/debt crisis.
The current legal limit (ceiling) on outstanding U.S. debt is $14.29 trillion. The federal government currently spends about $10 billion every day, and about $4 billion of that is borrowed with guarantees that future generations of Americans will repay the principal and interest.
The House budget plan, as of today, allows a $900 billion increase in the debt ceiling, but includes cuts of approximately that amount over 10 years, which is to say it is not a "net-net" plan to balance the budget now, and does not reverse debt accumulation.
Obama's 2012 budget is $3.7 trillion. Conservative estimates are that his "budget plan" will add more than $12 trillion in debt over the next decade. The only way the U.S. can remain solvent under those circumstances would require colossal tax increases and fiscal policies that inflate the economy -- both of which will break the back of free enterprise and ultimately lead to more taxes and inflation until the whole charade collapses.
This debt bomb poses the most significant threat to Essential Liberty in our nation's history. Our editorial team outlined this mounting national security threat back in 2004.
Across the nation, 49 of 50 states have some form of balanced budget requirement. The federal government, however, recognizes no such limitations and for three decades has been spending far more than it takes in.
Not only must the debt accumulation be stopped, it must be reversed.
To accomplish this reversal, the most pressing question in the current debate is not "which budget plan is better?" Rather, it is "By what authority does the central government collect taxes, and on what items is it authorized to spend those combined taxes and accumulated national debt?"
Tell me what you think
To answer that question, let's review the limitations on taxing and spending our Constitution imposed upon Congress before the courts twisted Rule of Law into the so-called "living constitution," which is subject to the rule of men. Under the latter, Congress has unlawfully assumed the authority not only to collect and spend taxes on any objects it desires (in order to perpetuate re-election), but to regulate everything else. (For the record, the cost of that regulation is estimated at $1.75 trillion annually -- more than twice the total income taxes collected in 2010.)
This unlawful spending and regulation is in abject violation of our elected officials' oaths to "support and defend" our Constitution, and a breach of trust in their contract with the American people, which has created a perilous national security crisis. But on the question of their constitutional authority, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi infamously claimed, "Nobody questions that."
To get a sense of how enormous the outlaw-spending crisis has grown, I quote Obama Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner's efforts to shock Republicans into submission this week: "Just remember, this is the United States of America. We write 80 million checks a month. There are millions and millions of Americans that depend on those checks coming on time. ... We cannot put those payments at risk and we do not have the ability to limit the damage on them if Congress fails to act in time."
By what authority is the central government taxing and borrowing to distribute 80 million checks a month?
The "General Welfare Clause" in Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution provides, "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States..."
During the constitutional ratification debates, our Founder's made clear that taxation in support of expenditure for the "general welfare" of the nation was subject to severe limits.
Alexander Hamilton, our nation's first Treasury secretary, argued for a somewhat more expansive interpretation of "general welfare," while James Madison, our Constitution's author, reiterated that the enumerated powers contained therein strictly limited the context of "general welfare."
Madison's view prevailed. As president, Madison vetoed a federal highway bill in 1817 because such expenditures were not authorized by our Constitution and, moreover, were clearly the responsibility of the states, as specified in the Tenth Amendment.
According to Madison, "It has been urged and echoed, that the power 'to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defence and general welfare of the United States,' amounts to an unlimited commission to exercise every power which may be alleged to be necessary for the common defence or general welfare."
However, wrote Madison, "If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the General Welfare, the Government is no longer a limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one."
In Federalist No. 45, Madison declared, "The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation and foreign commerce. ... The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives and liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement and prosperity of the State."
As for extra-constitutional taxation, Madison was unequivocal: "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."
The authentic interpretation of expenses authorized by our Constitution was sustained until the War Between the States, when Abraham Lincoln stretched them beyond constitutional bounds.
But the wholesale adulteration of our Constitution began with Franklin Delano Roosevelt's regime. Under duress of economic depression, he implemented such extra-constitutional programs as the Social Security Act, Federal Housing Administration, Home Owner's Loan Corporation, the Tennessee Valley Authority and a plethora of other "New Deal" federal spending programs, not one of which was authorized by our Constitution.
In 1936, the Supreme Court (U.S. v Butler) cemented this broad and unprecedented interpretation of the General Welfare Clause in alliance with FDR -- and the rest is history.
The High Court's interpretation far exceeded its constitutional authority. In Federalist No. 81, Alexander Hamilton made it clear that this sort of judicial activism was illegitimate: "[T]here is not a syllable in the [Constitution] which directly empowers the national courts to construe the laws according to the spirit of the Constitution."
Shredded
That notwithstanding, what our Constitution authorizes versus what the courts via judicial diktat have since interpreted it to authorize have rendered Rule of Law null and void. The resulting debt crisis is a menacing threat to Liberty.
So, what's the solution?
Tell me what you think
Thomas Jefferson warned, "To preserve independence ... we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and Liberty, or profusion and servitude. ... The fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its turn wretchedness and oppression."
A BBA is a good way to limit outlaw spending. However, there is no chance of a BBA passage with a Democrat administration and Democrat-controlled Senate. And if a BBA did pass, it could result in tax increases indexed to budget increases if it does not require a supermajority to raise taxes, a spending cap to keep the "balance" from perpetual increases, a provision to protect it from tax increases forced by judicial diktat, and a provision to ensure it is not construed as to affirm the constitutional authority of current spending programs -- most of which have no such authority.
Moreover, no amendment will suffice until the authority of our Constitution is restored, and that will require a broad challenge from "the People," and the first step in that challenge was born in the Tea Party movement this past election cycle. That momentum must be sustained if there is any hope to preserve Liberty.
On that authority, Jefferson noted, "Our peculiar security is in possession of a written Constitution. Let us not make it a blank paper by construction. ... If it is, then we have no Constitution. ... In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."
Alexander Hamilton wrote, "A sacred respect for the constitutional law is the vital principle, the sustaining energy of a free government. ... [T]he present Constitution is the standard to which we are to cling. Under its banners, bona fide must we combat our political foes -- rejecting all changes but through the channel itself provides for amendments."
George Washington, in his farewell address to the nation, wrote, "The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of Government. But the Constitution, which at any time exists, 'till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole People, is sacredly obligatory upon all. ... If in the opinion of the people the distribution or modification of the constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the constitution designates. But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this in one instance may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed."
Obama and his arrogant socialist cadres believe they are smarter than our Founders. They certainly believe they can outsmart most of the American People. Unless more of us begin to ask relevant questions about Rule of Law and constitutional authority, they may be right on the latter contention.

July 28, 2011 Effectively Helping the Poor While Controlling Government Spending As Congress turns itself in knots this week trying to resolve the looming debt crisis, some religious leaders are demanding that the President and congressional leaders exclude anti-poverty spending from budget talks. Leaders from 12 Christian organizations met with President Obama last Wednesday to discuss the Circle of Protection, an ecumenical document that insists federal welfare programs be left out of negotiations to get government spending under control. The Circle of Protection declares that "budgets are moral documents" and calls policymakers to "resist budget cuts that undermine the lives, dignity, and rights of poor and vulnerable people." However, such statements are overly simplistic and miss the point of reforms that can truly help the poor.
As Heritage's Ryan Messmore writes, "The budget is indeed a moral document, but it is also a morally complex document. Protecting ineffective programs doesn't protect the poor, and reducing the debate to simplistic catchphrases doesn't foster informed public discussion."
The Circle of Protection claims to defend poor Americans. But insisting that government funding continue for policies that have failed to reduce poverty rates is fails to help those truly in need. The belief that poverty is merely a problem of material need that will be solved by increased funds has seriously distracted policymakers from eliminating wasteful, ineffective programs and allocating resources to those truly experiencing destitution.
As Robert Rector and Rachel Sheffield point out in a new report on the actual living conditions of the poor in the U.S., "exaggeration and misinformation about poverty obscure the nature, extent, and causes of real material deprivation, thereby hampering the development of well-targeted, effective programs to reduce the problem."
So far, this week's debt talks seem to continue the status quo of inefficient spending on government assistance. Neither the Gang of Six's plan nor the Boehner Plan has adequately addressed the unsustainable spending on federal welfare programs.
Policymakers should begin to accurately assess the root causes of poverty and implement policies that promote self-sufficiency. Truly helping the poor will require anti-poverty policy to reflect the importance of marriage and work - not indiscriminately demand a hedge of protection around ineffective and inefficient government welfare programs.

Conservative leader takes fight to his own party
Meet Rep. Jim Jordan
When President Barack Obama complains about House Republicans unwilling to compromise on a deficit reduction package, he's talking about Rep. Jim Jordan, a former wrestling champion from Ohio who is becoming a driving force in the debt debate on Capitol Hill.
Jordan's district is right next to Speaker John Boehner's in the western part of Ohio, but ideologically, he is miles apart from the Republican leader.

Al Sharpton, MSNBC, and journalistic standards
Even libs think Sharpton is too bias
On Sunday, Cenk Uygur was interviewed by CNN's Howard Kurtz about Uygur's departure from MSNBC, and Ugyur claimed that Al Sharpton -- widely reported to be his replacement -- vowed in a 60 Minutes interview never to criticize President Obama under any circumstances.
When I first heard Ugyur make this claim, I assumed it was hyperbole -- until I watched the video and read the transcript of the Sharpton interview. The 60 Minutes segment was aired on May 19, 2011, and chronicles what it calls Sharpton's "metamorphosis: today he's down right tame. So much so, that he has made his way into the establishment."

Gov't welfare widens wealth gap
No surprise here
The gap in wealth between white Americans and minorities is the widest it's ever been, a new report says. Could it be that the government, while intending to help those in need, in fact ends up hurting them?
New Census data show that the recent economic crash has erased decades of minority gains in wealth. The net worth of whites is now 20 times higher than for blacks and 18 times higher than for Hispanics, both records.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz says GOP seeks 'dictatorship...spark panic'
She keeps bringing it
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), chair of the Democratic National Committee, said Wednesday that House Republicans are trying to impose "dictatorship" through their tactics in the debt-ceiling negotiations. She said the GOP rhetoric could "spark panic and chaos," which she called "potentially devastating" to the economy.
The chair telephoned POLITICO to express "significant disappointment in where ... Republicans have allowed this debate to degenerate."

Franken's SNL moment in the Senate
Franken's 'doing a bit' on debt-ceiling
For a moment Wednesday, Al Franken looked like he was back on the set of Saturday Night Live and not on the floor of the U.S. Senate. In a speech explaining that there would be no money to pay for military and security personnel if Congress doesn't pass a bill increasing the debt ceiling by Aug. 2, Franken unveiled a large poster in the chamber that said, "Welcome Terrorists."
Franken aimed his theater of the absurd at those who believe the U.S. doesn't have to raise the debt limit to avoid economic catastrophe. He couched it as black humor, but certainly not as comic relief in a House and Senate deadlock that economists say puts the U.S. at risk of a financial meltdown.

Democrats say Obama should invoke 14th amendment
Read Section 5 of the 14th Amendment
House Democrats said Wednesday that President Barack Obama should invoke a little-known constitutional provision to prevent the nation from going into default if Congress fails to come up with a plan to raise the debt ceiling.
Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, a member of the Democratic leadership, said he told fellow Democrats that Obama should both veto any House GOP plan for a short-term extension of the debt ceiling and invoke the 14th amendment, which says that the validity of the nation's public debt "shall not be questioned."

Sen. Rand Paul Firm Against Boehner & Reid Plans: "I Can't Vote for Anything That Doesn't Balance the Budget |
"The Boehner plan will never balance. It will add $1 trillion to the debt over 10 years. Every year under the Boehner plan, we will spend more and borrow more and the debt will grow.
"The balanced budget amendment allows five years to balance. If we pass it would it take two to three years to pass the states. We are talking about eight years to balance the budget, that's reasonable. The country is not heades for a crisis on August 2nd, it's headed debt crisis in the following months and years. That debt crisis is from spending too much. We have to rein it in. The entitlements are broken. On Thursday's Program
McCain lashes out at Tea Party, Stu loses his mind
John McCain is lashing out at the Tea Party and blaming them for holding up any decision on the debt ceiling battle - and he's also offering his advice on the situation. Get the latest on the debt battle and watch Stu lose his mind on radio today HERE.
Hmm, where'd racist anti-Tea Party nut get his nutty ideas?
Glenn played the audio of an anti-Tea Party protester who angrily declared the Tea Party as completely racist, ironically sounding pretty racist himself in the process. Since there are no demonstrable examples of Tea Party racism - where oh where did this guy ever get the idea? HINT: A familiar leftist news network plays a role. WATCH

Shocking: Poll shows Muslim Brotherhood candidate will win in Egypt
And the media is finally beginning to catch up to where Glenn was during the glorious Democratic revolution in the Middle East. Newsweek is suddenly expressing a little concern at the shocking (to them) fact that the Muslim Brotherhood candidate will likely win the upcoming election. But there were even more disturbing numbers in the poll - how many Egyptians view Israel in a positive light? Find out at The Blaze.
Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt = not good for Israel
As seen above, the latest poll results are very disturbing to Israel. Support among citizens in Egypt is scant, and the nation they'd most like to model? Turkey, who just moved to Islamic Law. It's just one of the many factors that are not breaking the right way for Israel - and all the more indication that NOW is the time to stand with Israel.
