McCain Defends 'Hobbit' Comment to Hannity: I Actually 'Admire' the Tea Party
The Blaze | by Jonathon M. Seidl | Posted on July 28, 2011 at 8:06am
John McCain had plenty of explaining to do last night when he joined Sean Hannity on Fox to try and assuage the anger of many conservatives after he read a Wall Street Journal op-ed that was critical of the Tea Party. In the op-ed, Tea Party members were called "hobbits," and McCain was sure to read that part out loud. So how did he explain himself? He said he was simply reading from the op-ed, and he actually "admires" the Tea Party.
"I wasn't attacking the Tea Partiers or anybody," he said, later adding that the editorial he read was more of an "attack on President Obama."

Scientist Tied to Global Warming Being Investigated for 'Scientific Misconduct'
The Blaze | by Billy Hallowell | Posted on July 28, 2011 at 8:08am
JUNEAU, Alaska (The Blaze/AP) - A federal wildlife biologist whose observation in 2004 of presumably drowned polar bears in the Arctic helped to galvanize the global warming movement has been placed on administrative leave and is being investigated for scientific misconduct, possibly over the veracity of that article. Newser has more: Charles Monnett is being investigated for unspecified "integrity issues" apparently linked to his report that polar bears could face an increased threat of death if they're forced to swim farther as Arctic ice recedes.

New Poll: 'Trouble for the West' as Egyptians On Pace to Elect Muslim Brotherhood
The Blaze | by Jonathon M. Seidl | Posted on July 28, 2011 at 7:32am
Remember Amr Moussa? He's the Egyptian presidential candidate - who is also a part of the Muslim Brotherhood - who said in May that Hamas - the terror group - is not a terror group. Now, a new Newsweek/Daily Beast poll finds that he's the likely winner in Egypt's upcoming election, and his party is likely to gain power. And according to Newsweek, that's bad news for Israel and America.
"The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest Islamist group, is poised to win the largest share of the vote in parliamentary elections," the Daily Beast writes, "the man who appears to have a clear shot at the presidency, Amr Moussa, has made his name criticizing Israel; and a large majority of respondents favor amending or revoking the cornerstone of regional stability, the Camp David Accords."

Sen. Franken Brings Theatrics to Debt Debate With 'Welcome Terrorists' Sign
The Blaze | by Tiffany Gabbay | Posted on July 27, 2011 at 11:59pm
StarTribune: For a moment Wednesday, Al Franken looked like he was back on the set of Saturday Night Live and not on the floor of the U.S. Senate. In a speech explaining that there would be no money to pay for military and security personnel if Congress doesn't pass a bill increasing the debt ceiling by Aug. 2, Franken unveiled a large poster in the chamber that said, "Welcome Terrorists." Franken aimed his theater of the absurd at those who believe the U.S. doesn't have to raise the debt limit to avoid economic catastrophe. He couched it as black humor, but certainly not as comic relief in a House and Senate deadlock that economists say puts the U.S. at risk of a financial meltdown.

Press Release:
AFDI/SIOA 9/11 Freedom Rally:
Stand Against Ground Zero Mosque, and Durban III, Stand for America
NEW YORK, July 6: The human rights organization American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) will be hosting its second annual 9/11 Freedom Rally on September 11 at 3pm at Park Place and West Broadway.
Free citizens are coming from all over the U.S. to attend the rally. "It is crucial to stand for freedom on this tenth anniversary of the heinous 9/11 jihad attacks," said AFDI Executive Director Pamela Geller. "We must show the jihadists we are unbowed in the defense of freedom."
AFDI and its Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) program are encouraging all Americans to stand against the Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero and the anti-Semitic Durban III conference that will be held in New York City at the same time, and for American values on the tenth anniversary of the worst attack ever on American soil.
The confirmed list of speakers includes 9/11 family members Alexander and Maureen Santora, who lost their firefighter son Christopher; Sally Regenhard, whose son Christian was killed on 9/11; Nelly Braginsky, who lost her son Alexander; and others.
Other speakers include former U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton (video message); the courageous ex-Muslim human rights activist Wafa Sultan; war hero and North Carolina Congressional candidate Ilario Pantano; former prosecutor and bestselling author Andrew C. McCarthy; popular radio host Joyce Kaufman; Darla Dawald, National Director of the Patriot Action Network; James Lafferty of the Virginia Anti-Sharia Taskforce (VAST); Coptic Christian activist Joseph Nassralla; Iraqi ex-Muslim Paul Gaynos.
Hosting the rally are Pamela Geller, publisher of the acclaimed AtlasShrugs.com blog, executive director of AFDI and SIOA, and author of Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance (WND Books); and AFDI/SIOA associate director Robert Spencer, the bestselling author and director of Jihad Watch.
Building the Ground Zero mosque is not an issue of religious freedom, but of resisting an effort to insult the victims of 9/11 and to establish a beachhead for political Islam and Islamic supremacism in New York. Cordoba Initiative board member imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is an open proponent of Sharia, Islamic law, a system that denies the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law. Given the thousands of triumphal mosques that have been built on the cherished sites of conquered peoples throughout Islamic history, the mosque leaders' claim that this mosque would be understood differently by Muslims worldwide lack foundation.
The Durban III conference follows upon two previous conferences that scapegoated and demonized the state of Israel in service of Islamic jihad and Islamic supremacist interests. The rally will defend Israel against the defamation to which it will be subjected at this conference. It will also call upon the city to remove roadblocks to the reconstruction of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on 9/11 and since then mired in bureaucratic red tape that has prevented its rebuilding - in stark contrast to the help Mayor Bloomberg and other city officials have given to the Ground Zero Mosque project.
AFDI/SIOA is one of America's foremost organizations defending human rights, religious liberty, and the freedom of speech against Islamic supremacist intimidation and attempts to bring elements of Sharia to the United States.

"We have gone to the capitals of our states and to the capitals of our government. We have talked to all the power brokers. The only power broker, the only seat of government that can and will solve this problem with or without us is God. It is time to return inside the walls that surround Jerusalem and stand with people of all faiths, all around the world," Glenn said in his initial announcement.
"In August, whether I'm there with seven people or 10 people or there alone, I will stand. I ask you to join me. I also ask you to take this message globally, to take this to every corner of the earth. If you have family living overseas, this is not an America solution. This is a people of faith solution. This is a people all over the world solution. I ask you to help get this word out."

RedState Morning Briefing
For July 28, 2011
1. Our Admiral Ackbar Moment - It Is A Trap
As you wake up, here is what you need to know.
John Boehner thinks he has the votes to pass his third plan out of the House. Work to make sure he does not by going to http://www.redstate.com/action and calling your member of Congress. Tell them to oppose Boehner's plan.
Even if you are sympathetic to Boehner's plan, here is why it must be killed - it is a trap.
Pay attention please.
Harry Reid and all the Senate Democrats have sent John Boehner a letter saying they will oppose his plan in the Senate. In other words, Boehner's plan, given the GOP votes in the Senate pledged to vote against it, will get less votes in both the House and in the Senate than Cut, Cap, and Balance.
Here, though, is why it is important to kill John Boehner's plan this very morning before today's vote.
John Boehner's plan will get to the Senate. Harry Reid's plan isn't even in final form and has not even started making its way through the Senate's arcane processes. It is a trap.
Harry Reid will amend John Boehner's plan and include parts of Reid's own plan that make tax increases even more likely than Boehner's already does.
Senate Democrats last night were beginning to talk about adding the Gang of Six's very bad plan to it as well - a trigger that would be engaged should the Democrats then refuse to reform entitlements, i.e. a trigger the Democrats will gladly engage because the Gang of Six plan raises taxes, including getting rid of the employer credit for active duty military reservists and raising the capital gains tax from 15% to 28%.
Then the Senate Democrats will send John Boehner back his own plan and dare John Boehner to kill his very own proposal. Should he try, the GOP will look as hardline and unwilling to compromise as John Boehner's acolytes have been accusing conservatives of being this week.
2. All You Need To Know About The House Republicans
One week ago the entire conservative movement was unified behind Cut, Cap, and Balance as was both House and Senate GOP caucus - no small feat to be sure.
Then, because Harry Reid denied CCB a vote through a procedural motion, John Boehner produces a crackpot plan that rips the conservative movement apart at the seams and after taking two stabs at it, still can't get to the promised $1.2 trillion in cuts he initially claimed it would have.
The bill is being whipped against by Pelosi (which CCB was not) and will likely draw less Dem support than CCB. The bill is said by Reid to be DOA in the Senate.
But Boehner believes that it is strategically smarter to die on this hill and force it down Senate Dems throats rather than try to do that on a bill in which he has the support of all his members, all the movement, and 66 percent of the American people.
These people need to be put in a mental ward.
3. The Great Divide
When the GOP was finally tossed for its "culture of corruption," there were very few Republicans standing in Washington that the GOP felt it could trust. Mike Pence was one. Jeff Flake another. Jim DeMint for sure.
So conservatives rallied to send them reinforcements - Tom Graves, Dave Schwiekert, Tim Huelskamp, Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, etc.
The GOP told us they had turned from their big spending ways. John Boehner went so far last year to say he appreciated outside conservative groups holding their feet to the fire.
And then today -The GOP would not fight for smaller government when it was in the majority and now it seems it intends to cave abjectly in the minority hiding behind its minority status instead of fighting.
If the GOP won't fight in the majority and it won't fight in the minority, what good is it? Even now, guys like Jeff Flake and Mike Pence seem to be going wobbly.
Like TARP, No Child Left Behind, Medicare Part D, Harriet Miers - these are the fights that define a conservative's legacy in Congress. The new guys might not realize that. But ultimately, we conservatives remember.
4. Message to RSC Members: Get in or Get Out
Rep. Jim Jordan, the Chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), is taking massive heat from many of his own colleagues within the RSC for his public opposition to the Boehner debt deal. RSC staff is being called out by name for doing their job effectively. Calls are coming from all Leadershipistas to fire the RSC staff.
These members-such as Rep. Renee Ellmers (NC)-don't like the fact that they are perceived on the wrong side of where the conservative movement ended up. Some are threatening to quit their membership in the House of Representative's predominant conservative caucus.
If that's what they think, they should submit their resignation-today.
5. What is the End Game for Big Government?
Those Republicans, such as the Wall Street Journal editors and the Weekly Standard writers, who criticize Tea Party opposition to Boehner's plan, would have you believe that they are just as ideologically committed to downsizing government. They are just advocating smarter and more politically savvy ways of achieving that goal; one that is supposedly less tendentious to independent voters. As such, they have an obligation to create a political and policy road map that will reduce government - a goal they purportedly share. Where is their plan?
We believe that unless we go to the brink, and use our leverage with the budget process to force fundamental and transformational government reform, we will never limit government. These wizards of smart obviously believe that we will have better opportunities in the future. What are those opportunities?

GUEST OPINION Fitzpatrick: The United States can no longer defer difficult decisions on deficits, spending
Published: Friday, July 22, 2011
America's financial strength and stability are rooted in its ability to attract investors here at home and abroad. Never in the history of our nation have we defaulted on our loans. So important is this basic principle that the United States Constitution, in addition to establishing our form of government, expressly guaranteed the new government would pay the debts of our revolution.
Despite a history of meeting our obligations, we are on the brink of having our creditworthiness as a nation downgraded. Prolific spending has hastened the now infamous August 2 deadline when the accounting gimmicks run out and the federal government's credit card hits its limit.

Please Call Your Congressman Now
The House will vote Wednesday on the new "Boehner Plan" in the debt ceiling debate. Unless you want our national debt to reach $23.7 trillion over the next 10 years, I need you to call your Congressman right now to tell them to vote NO. And then you need to forward this email to all your friends and ask them to do the same thing. Call NOW>>
Why? The Boehner Plan barely cuts ($6 billion next year), doesn't cap, and doesn't balance.
In fact, over the next 10 years it leaves the United States with a national debt of $23.7 trillion instead of $24.9 trillion and then asks a "special committee" to come up with some more ideas for cuts. Seventeen special committees since 1982 have left us in the hole we're in today so we have no reason to think this one would be any different. We need real cuts now.
The big vote is this Wednesday, so this cannot be put off. Call now to oppose the Boehner Plan.
Speaker Boehner and House Republicans did the right thing last week when they passed the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act with a massive 234-190 bi-partisan majority. That was our compromise position. It gave the Democrats their coveted debt ceiling increase so long as they passed permanent change to how Washington spends our money in the form of a Balanced Budget Amendment.
Then the Democrat-controlled Senate refused to debate the bill. That's right, the "most deliberative body in the world" refused to debate a bill with bi-partisan support and, according to a CNN poll, the support of 66 percent of Americans. They know the Balanced Budget Amendment is wildly popular across party lines and that they would lose that fight.
Unfortunately, rather than hold the line and force President Obama or Harry Reid to put to paper their own legislation (which they have failed to do), Speaker Boehner has (again) put forward a plan.
But this plan will not do and the credit rating agencies agree. So far, the only plan that could protect our national AAA credit rating is Cut, Cap, and Balance.
Please call your Congressman right now and tell him you oppose the Boehner Plan, or any plan that leaves us $23.7 trillion in debt in 10 years. We need to head in the other direction-toward balance, and toward Washington only spending what it brings in.
The Cut, Cap, and Balance Act is the only existing legislation that gets us there.
Washington wants a deal; the American people want a solution. Cut, Cap, and Balance is the solution. Please call now.
In Liberty,
Matt Kibbe President and CEO, FreedomWorks

The August 2 debt ceiling deadline is quickly approaching. The clock is ticking on this opportunity to restore fiscal sanity to Washington.
And we need your help.
Saving the American Dream is Heritage's plan to fix the debt, cut spending, and restore prosperity.
To make sure lawmakers see this plan before it's too late, we have launched an all-out advertising campaign in Washington, D.C. to target lawmakers and their staffs. We estimate more than 790,000 people will come in contact with these ads every day-including critical Capitol Hill decisionmakers.
Heritage needs the help of every friend and member to help us raise $92,500 before midnight on July 28 for this advertising blitz.
Time is running short. Please give now.
I am grateful for conservative allies like you.
Sincerely,
Edwin J. Feulner, Ph.D. President The Heritage Foundation

Susan's Paul Ryan Medicare Pamphlet - please print this and give it to your contacts
SAVING MEDICARE
Since 1964, our nation's senior citizens have relied on Medicare to ensure access to healthcare. Now the program is going broke -- and it is going broke fast.
It began spending its reserves in 2008 when payouts exceeded dollars collected for the program. [cite]
Predictions for exhaustion of the reserve vary, with 2024 identified by the Social Security Administration in the Trustees 2011 report. [cite]
The Democrat response is to reduce the amount Medicare reimburses physicians for their services. [cite]
This will result in fewer participating physicians and the physicians continuing in the program seeing fewer Medicare patients.
Patients will wait longer and have fewer choices in seeing a doctor.
If this makes access to care sufficiently untenable, or if Medicare does not get on viable financial footing, it will be administered through ObamaCare[cite].
This would include cost controls by a 15-member board of bureaucrats deciding wich treatments, drugs, and surgeries patients can receive.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget, has a plan which saves Medicare with no disruption to today's seniors and reasonable changes for future retirees.
The Ryan Plan is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. The future of our seniors' healthcare is too important to be decided on misinformation. Here are the facts about Medicare and the Ryan Plan.
The Ryan Plan in a Nutshell
Those currently retired and those close to retirement (55 and over) will see no change from the existing Medicare system. Existing physician reimbursement flaws will be corrected to encourage physicians to continue participating in the system.[cite]
On retirement, those currently under 55 will be provided vouchers from the government to help pay for health insurance. Voucher amounts will be based in part on income, with wealthier individuals receiving less assistance. Risk pools [cite] will be created to ensure that insurance companies will provide coverage to seniors, despite their generally higher use of medical care.
The result is retirees will have a system that gives them options, similar to that which members of Congress use and which will include options similar to Medicare Advantage, the popular plan eliminated by Obamacare. [cite]
The Ryan Plan Incorporates These Important Points
It is important that we
Plan now for changes, to avoid chaos later
The medicare system is running out of money. Change is coming, one way or another.
Pretending we can continue as we are is not an option, it is a recipe for disaster. The longer we wait to make changes, the greater the disruption to current and future retires, the more abruptly the changes will have to be implemented, and the fewer options we will have.
By implementing the Ryan Plan now, we will
- maintain the existing system for current retirees and for individuals 55 and over
- provide a sustainable, quality system for future retirees.
It is important that we...
Preserve the existing system, unchanged, for current retirees and workers 55 and older
This bears repeating:
- Under the Ryan Plan, if you are retired, your Medicare coverage will not change.
- If you are over 55, Medicare as it exists today will be there for you when you retire.
- And the Ryan Plan provides for quality health insurance coverage upon retirement for those currently under 55.
It is important that we...
Maintain availability of insurance coverage for future retirees
Since individuals generally require more medical care as they age, it tends to be difficult for older individuals to find private health insurance that will cover them. That is one reason our existing Medicare system is considered so important for many. The Ryan Plan creates risk pools which encourage multiple insurance companies to offer health coverage to those of retirement age.
It is important that we...
Maintain affordability
Individuals have paid into the Medicare system with the promise that coverage will be there for them when they retire. Unfortunately, we are facing an economic crisis in this country and Medicare is a significant part of the problem. To save the system for everyone and to avert broader economic calamity, in the future wealthier Americans will have to bear a greater portion of their healthcare burden.
It is important that we...
Make it feasible for doctors to participate in Medicare
Currently in many areas of the country physicans are reimbursed for Medicare patients at a rate that does not cover their expenses. Recent changes put forth by the Democrats further reduce reimbursement. [cite] This is not sustainable for any business and as a result increasing numbers of physicians are discontinuing their participation in the Medcare program. Patients are finding that their physician is no longer a Medicare provider and when they look for another physician it is increasingly difficult for them to find a Medicare provider who is accepting new patients and can see them in a reasonable time. [cite]. The Ryan plan fixes the reimbursement problem, making it feasible for physicians to continue participating in Medicare.
It is important that we...
Keep medical decisions between patients and doctors, not remote government panels
The Ryan plan harnesses the free market and puts choice in the hands of the patient. Retirees will be able to pick the insurance plan that best meets their needs, applying government vouchers toward premium costs. Medical decisions would be made in consultation with their personal physician, based on the individual's situation and preferences.

Al-Qaida plans cartoon recruiting film for kids
By PAISLEY DODDS - Associated Press | AP - Wed, Jul 20, 2011
LONDON (AP) - An al-Qaida affiliate says it plans to roll out what some have called a Disney-like animated cartoon aimed at recruiting children to the terror network.
Scenes from the proposed short film show young boys dressed in battle fatigues and participating in raids, killings and terror plots. It is the latest attempt by the terror organization to use multimedia to draw in potential recruits. Recently, a Yemen-based extremist group released an online women's magazine with makeup and chastity tips.
News of the animated film was announced by a group called Abu al-Laith al-Yemen on the Arabic-language al-Shamouk jihadist website, the London-based Quilliam Foundation reported Wednesday. Quilliam, which was formed by former jihadists and now aims to stamp out extremism, said it appears the group is affiliated with al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Tangled Up in Washington's Red Tape
For months, Washington has focused on solving its uncontrolled addiction to spending. But while Congress and the White House use one hand to reach into your back pocket to take and spend your hard-earned dollars, they're using another hand to wreak a different kind of nefarious harm-the proliferation of regulations, rules, and red tape, all of which impose heavy costs on America.
In the just-released "Red Tape Rising: A 2011 Mid-Year Report," The Heritage Foundation's James Gattuso and Diane Katz explain the pervasiveness of government's intrusive regulatory hand (that oftentimes goes go well beyond ensuring product safety) and how it controls nearly every facet of your daily life.

AFSI is pleased to forward the ZOA notice of the excellent resolution crafted by South Carolina State Rep. Alan D. Clemmons in support of Israel and in denunciation of the Obama call for an Israeli retreat to the 1967 borders. We urge everyone to contact their State legislators, asking them to follow the example of South Carolina in unanimously passing H.R. 4339. The website of the National Conference of State Legislatures will take you to a map of the U.S. where, by allowing your cursor to rest on the state of your choice, you will get the information regarding the leaders in that state: http://www.ncsl.org/Default.aspx?TabID=746&tabs=1116,86,507#507
AFSI joins the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) in strongly praising the South Carolina General Assembly's unanimous passage of House Resolution 4339, as well as its author, State Representative Alan D. Clemmons. The bill explicitly states that "Israel is neither an attacking force nor an occupier of the lands of others, and that peace can be afforded to the region only through a united Israel governed under one law for all people." The strong and honest language used in this resolution necessarily recognizes that Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria[the West Bank] must remain united under Israeli sovereignty for the sake of peace and security. As explained by Rep. Clemmons to the media, the resolution was also intended as an "indictment of President Obama's Middle East Policy", and serves as a clear demonstration of the true will of the American People, who want to see Israel supported by their government rather than pressured and mistreated.
The text of South Carolina's H.R. 4339 in its entirety:
A HOUSE RESOLUTION TO COMMEND THE NATION OF ISRAEL FOR ITS RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND WITH THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA. Whereas, Israel has been granted her lands under and through the oldest recorded deed as reported in the Old Testament, a tome of scripture held sacred and reverenced by Jew and Christian, alike, as the acts and words of God; and
Whereas, as the Grantor of said lands, God stated to the Jewish people in the Old Testament; in Leviticus, Chapter 20, Verse 24: "Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey"; and
Whereas, God has never rescinded his grant of said lands; and Whereas, along with the grant of said lands to the Jewish people, God provided for the non-Jewish residents of the land in commanding that governance must be in one law for all without drawing distinction between Jewish and non-Jewish citizens, as contained in Leviticus 24:22; and
Whereas, the Nation of Israel declared its independent control and governance of said lands on May 14, 1948, with the goal of reestablishing their God-given lands as a homeland for the Jewish people; and
Whereas, the United States of America, having been the first country to recognize Israel as an independent nation and as Israel's principal ally, has enjoyed a close and mutually beneficial relationship with Israel and her people; and
Whereas, indeed, Israel is the United States of America's greatest friend in the Mideast; and
Whereas, the roots of Israel and the roots of the United States are so intertwined that it is difficult to separate one from the other under the word and protection of almighty God; and Whereas, there are those in the Middle East who have sought to destroy Israel from its inception as a nation; and Whereas, those same haters of Israel also hate, and seek to destroy, the United States of America; and Whereas, the State of South Carolina and the nation of Israel have enjoyed cordial and mutually beneficial relations since 1948, a friendship that continues to strengthen with each passing year. Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the nation of Israel for its relations with the United States of America and with the State of South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that the members of this body support Israel in their natural and God-given right of self-governance and self-defense upon their own lands, recognizing that Israel is neither an attacking force nor an occupier of the lands of others, and that peace can be afforded the region only through a united Israel governed under one law for all people.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Speaker of the House of Representatives of each of South Carolina's sister states within the United States of America with the request and recommendation of this body that a similar resolution to that stated herein be proposed within their respective bodies.
----XX---- As explained to ZOA and to the media by Representative Clemmons, this resolution was specifically intended to be a bipartisan criticism of the Obama Administration's misguided and hurtful approach to U.S.-Israel relations. We know of no other state legislature that has gone so far, or has been so assertive of the truth, in clearly expressing the will of its people to stand with Israel. We are certain that this resolution, with its unanimous bipartisan passage, is the true bellwether of how the American People wish to see relations with Israel handled. We look forward to seeing the other 49 states follow the terrific example set by South Carolina, and strongly encourage them to do so."

'US paying salaries for jailed Palestinian terrorists'

The Palestinian Authority spends more than $5 million a month paying salaries to terrorists sitting in Israeli prisons, according to a Palestinian Media Watch report presented to congressmen in Washington on Tuesday.
According to the report, written by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik, such payments contravene US law, which prohibits funding of any person who "engages in, or has engaged in terrorist activity. |

Palestinian poll: Disturbing news for the 'peace process'
By Jennifer Rubin
I spent some time over the weekend going through a fascinating poll by the Democratic polling outfit Greenberg, Quinlan and Rosner that interviewed 1,009 Palestinian adults, 656 in the West Bank and 353 in Gaza. It is, to say the least, a mixed bag. I'd encourage readers to look through the entire poll, but I'll highlight a few of the findings.
Large majorities favor the attempt to gain a unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood by the United Nations. But interestingly, a plurality (44 percent) think it will make no difference in bringing about a Palestinian state.

Rep. King's amazing opening statement at today's congressional hearing on al Shabaab Rep. Peter King's opening statement at today's House Committee on Homeland Security hearing (highlights added) underscores why ACT! for America presented him our highest legislative award at this year's National Conference and Legislative Briefing. Make sure you scroll down to the end to read what he says about the New York Times.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
King Opens Third Committee on Homeland Security Hearing on Radicalization, Focusing on al Shabaab Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, July 27, 2011) - This morning, U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, convenes the hearing entitled "Al Shabaab: Recruitment and Radicalization within the Muslim American Community and the Threat to the Homeland." The prepared opening statement of Chairman King follows: "Good morning. Today, we hold the third in a series of hearings on radicalization in the Muslim-American community. Our focus is the result of a lengthy investigation the Committee has conducted into the threat the U.S. homeland faces from al-Shabaab, the Somalia affiliate of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda and Anwar al-Aulaqi's al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The Committee has been briefed by intelligence agencies and we have interviewed dozens of experts on al-Shabaab. I welcome our distinguished panel of witnesses. They have some of the most extensive insights into the problems uncovered by our Committee's investigation and we are grateful they are sharing their knowledge. You will hear how al-Shabaab, who bin Laden called "One of the most important armies" of Islam, is engaged in an ongoing, successful effort to recruit and radicalize dozens of Muslim-American jihadis, who pose a direct threat to the U.S. Some argue that al-Shabaab is only a Somali problem, and that the group will never strike outside of the Horn of Africa region. That kind of thinking is a glaring example of what the 9/11 Commission called a failure of imagination. With al-Shabaab's large cadre of American jihadis and unquestionable ties to al-Qaeda, particularly its alliance with AQAP, we must face the reality that al-Shabaab is a growing threat to our homeland. Our investigation into this threat has led to alarming findings: Notably, that al-Shabaab has successfully recruited and radicalized more than 40 Muslim-Americans and 20 Canadians, who have joined the terror group inside Somalia. Of those, at least 15 Americans and 3 Canadians are believed to have been killed fighting with al-Shabaab, the Committee has learned. Not al-Qaeda, nor any of its other affiliates, have come close to drawing so many Muslim-Americans and Westerners to jihad. Three Muslim-Americans became suicide bombers, such as Shirwa Ahmed from Minneapolis -- the first confirmed American suicide bomber in our history. There also are radicalized converts like al-Shabaab commander Omar Hammami who was raised a Baptist in Alabama, and who has repeatedly threatened the U.S. homeland. Three American al-Shabaab fighters have been arrested after returning home and one was collared in the Netherlands. Other radicalized Muslims have been arrested in the U.S. and Canada before they reached Somalia, which is now much easier to get to for jihad than Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan or Yemen. But as many as two-dozen Muslim-Americans with al-Shabaab -- who in many cases were trained by top al-Qaeda leaders -- remain unaccounted for. The Committee found that al-Shabaab-related federal prosecutions for funding, recruiting and attempting to join al-Shabaab are the largest number and most significant upward trend in homegrown terror cases filed by the Justice Department over the past two years. At least 38 cases have been unsealed since 2009 in Minnesota, Ohio, California, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Missouri, Alabama, Virginia and Texas. Al-Shabaab is recruiting inside American mosques in Somali communities like Minneapolis and San Diego, according to the Justice Department. This month, an al-Shabaab recruiter pleaded guilty to recruiting a large group of Muslims in Minneapolis, "At mosques," and without any known protest by mosque leaders. A top al-Shabaab leader in Somalia supervised this recruiting. One Minnesotan recruited was suicide bomber Shirwa Ahmed whose 2008 attack in northern Somalia sent a shockwave of alarm through U.S. homeland security agencies, because of its implications. Another would-be bomber from Minneapolis was shot and killed in Mogadishu by peacekeeping troops on May 30, moments before detonating his suicide vest. When one cleric spoke out against al-Shabaab inside the Minneapolis mosque where many of the missing young Somali-American men had once worshipped, he was physically assaulted, according to police. For those still skeptical that there are still jihadi sympathizers inside that community, it's worth mentioning that the Committee learned of the mosque assault when an audiotape of the incident was posted on overseas jihadi Internet forums before authorities in Minneapolis even knew about the incident. There is an enormous amount of travel by Somali-Americans between U.S. cities and East Africa. While most of this travel is legitimate senior U.S. counterterror officials have told the Committee they are very concerned about individuals they have not identified who have fallen in with al-Shabaab during trips to Somalia, who could return to the U.S. undetected. They fear an al-Shabaab fighter operating under law enforcement's radar - someone like a Zazi, a Shahzad, an Abdulmutallab - may attempt an attack here. It is deeply troubling that from the very beginning, the Muslim-Americans in Somalia were trained by top al-Qaeda operatives, including several who were tied to Yemen's al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which is now generally considered our biggest homeland threat. Al-Shabaab operative Ahmed Abdulkadir Warsame was charged this month for doing weapons deals and explosives training with AQAP in Yemen, and to, "Provide AQAP with material support including... personnel." Al-Shabaab has long harbored top al-Qaeda leaders, such as the mastermind of the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in East Africa, who was gunned down this month in Somalia after a 13-year manhunt. Al-Shabaab has paraded in Somalia in support of AQAP and sent fighters to battle the weakened Yemeni government this year -- as well as flying the battle flag of al-Qaeda-in-IRAQ. Finally, an al-Shabaab bombing in neighboring Uganda one year ago that targeted Westerners killed 74 people including one American. President Obama's Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, has said the Administration remains, quote, "Vigilant that al-Shabaab may expand its focus from fighting to control Somalia to plotting to attack the U.S. homeland." That convinced me of the necessity to launch a careful examination of that threat. Dozens of experts the Committee interviewed agreed this threat is real, and that al-Shabaab leaders' public calls for attacks against America -- including in retaliation for killing bin Laden -- must be taken seriously. With a large group of Muslim-Americans willing to die as "martyrs," and a strong operational partnership with al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan and in Yemen, al-Shabaab now has more capability than ever to strike the U.S. homeland. We look forwarding to hearing more about the rising al-Shabaab threat from our exceptional witnesses, as well as the Minority's distinguished witness. Finally, I note that certain elements of the politically correct media-most egregiously the vacuous ideologues at the New York Times-are shamelessly attempting to exploit the horrific tragedy in Norway to cause me to refocus these hearings away from Muslim-American radicalization. If they had even a semblance of intellectual honesty the Times and the others would know and admit that there is no equivalency in the threat to our homeland from a deranged gunman and the international terror apparatus of al-Qaeda and its affiliates who are recruiting people in this country and have murdered thousands of Americans in their jihad attacks. Let me make this clear to the New York Times and their acolytes in the politically correct, moral equivalency media--I will not back down from holding these hearings. I will continue to hold these hearings so long as I am the Chairman of this Committee. Apart from all the strategic and moral reasons why these hearings are vital to our security, they are liberating and empowering to the many Muslim-Americans who have been intimidated by leaders in their own communities and are now able to come forward. I also owe it to all the friends, neighbors, and constituents I lost on September 11th. I will not back down."

Slain Iranian scientist was working on a nuclear bomb detonator DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 24, 2011
Daryush Rezaee-Nejad, 35, who died Saturday, July 23, when two motorcyclists shot him in the head and throat in front of his home in Tehran, was a rising star of the new generation of Iranian nuclear scientists. debkafile's Iranian sources disclose he was attached to one of the most secret teams of Iran's nuclear program, employed by the defense ministry to construct detonators for the nuclear bombs and warhead already in advanced stages of development.
This was another in the series in the past year of mysterious attacks of top-flight scientists attached to the Iranian nuclear program.
Our sources disclose that while he may have fit the Iranian media's description of "a university student studying for a master's degree in electricity at the Khajeh-Nasser University, one of the defense ministry's Institutes of Hydraulic Engineering and Structural Engineering," that description applied only to one part of his work.
He was also to be found daily at the top secret Parchine nuclear and military laboratories in northeast Tehran, where most of the work on nuclear bomb components and operational warheads is conducted.
His employment in this dual capacity helped Tehran keeping these activities under deep cover.

New York Times reader kills dozens in Norway
|
The New York Times wasted no time in jumping to conclusions about Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian who staged two deadly attacks in Oslo last weekend, claiming in the first two paragraphs of one story that he was a "gun-loving," "right-wing," "fundamentalist Christian," opposed to "multiculturalism."
It may as well have thrown in "Fox News-watching" and "global warming skeptic." This was a big departure from the Times' conclusion-resisting coverage of the Fort Hood shooting suspect, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. Despite reports that Hasan shouted "Allahu Akbar!" as he gunned down his fellow soldiers at a military medical facility in 2009, only one of seven Times articles on Hasan so much as mentioned that he was a Muslim.
|
Of course, that story ran one year after Hasan's arrest, so by then, I suppose, the cat was out of the bag. In fact, however, Americans who jumped to conclusions about Hasan were right and New York Times reporters who jumped to conclusions about Breivik were wrong.

From: Gary L. Bauer
2012 Update
- There is a new Gallup poll out today on the 2012 GOP primary campaign. The race is extremely fluid. Among the field of announced candidates, it is essentially a three-"man" contest. Mitt Romney remains the clear frontrunner with 27%. Michele Bachmann is second with 18%. Ron Paul is third with 11%. No other candidate received double-digit support.
Add in some other possible contenders and it becomes a "free-for-all." For example, with Palin, Perry and Giuliani in, it's Romney (17%), Perry (15%), Palin (12%), Giuliani (11%) and Bachmann (11%). That's five candidates bunched within six points of each other, and Romney and Perry are statistically tied for first.
- While the conventional wisdom suggests that Texas Governor Rick Perry would be a strong candidate if he got into the race, he recently stumbled on a fundamental issue - the meaning of marriage. Asked what he thought about New York legalizing same-sex "marriages," Perry said:
"Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex. And you know what? That's New York, and that's their business, and that's fine with me. That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business."
The answer was disappointing because I know he is against same-sex "marriage" and I understand he supports a constitutional amendment. Surely he knows that the militant homosexual rights movement does not believe in the 10th Amendment and won't let the meaning of marriage remain a state's rights issue.
In fact, the Attorney General of New York filed a lawsuit in federal court yesterday seeking to have the Defense of Marriage Act declared unconstitutional. If that happens, then Texas will be forced to recognize the "gay marriages" performed in New York.
Federalism is an important value for many conservatives, but it is not our most important value. I was recently interviewed by RealClearPolitics about Perry's comments and how they might impact the 2012 race. You can read more here.
- A Rasmussen poll released yesterday on the 2012 general election found Barack Obama losing to a generic Republican candidate 42% to 48%. While it would be a mistake to take the election for granted at this stage, several recent articles (here and here ) make it clear that Obama's reelection is by no means a given. We can end this nightmare in November 2012! That leads me to the next item in today's report, as events in the next few days could dramatically impact the outcome of next year's presidential contest.
Obama Doesn't Want A Deal
With each passing day, I'm becoming more and more convinced that President Obama does not want a deal on the debt limit. He wants a default. Despite all his public statements in recent days about compromise, the president has been negotiating without details, offering deals he can't deliver and moving the goal posts at every opportunity. He constantly demonizes Republicans and promotes class warfare. This is not a man who wants a deal.
Why would Obama want a default? Senator McConnell put it best recently when he said that Obama "owns" the economy right now. The stimulus bill was his bill. Unemployment today is higher than when he took office. There are trillion-dollar deficits in all of Obama's budgets. ObamaCare, well, that's obvious. That isn't much of a positive record for Obama to run on next year. So, he is desperately looking for a way to deflect blame for the lousy economy away from him and his failed policies, and to the GOP and conservatives.
He wants an excuse to send out tens of millions of letters, instead of checks, on August 3rd blaming Republicans for Social Security and other payments either not going out or being dramatically reduced. He wants the financial markets in chaos. George Soros will gladly help make it happen. It's worth remembering that in a post-Labor Day Gallup poll, the McCain/Palin ticket was leading Obama/Biden by 10 points among likely voters - until the 2008 banking crisis erupted.
Obama is headed toward a massive defeat UNLESS he can blame the economy on the GOP. If this current stalemate continues beyond August 2nd, every media outlet will eagerly parrot Obama's talking points. This leads us to the current dilemma facing the GOP on Capitol Hill: What is the debt limit end game? How does the GOP avoid falling into Obama's trap and getting blamed for the consequences of a default?
This question has led the Wall Street Journal, National Review, Rep. Paul Ryan, former Senator Fred Thompson and other conservatives to suggest that we have likely gotten as much out of this debate as we could hope for. The GOP has stopped an Obama tax increase and forced Democrats to agree to spending cuts, even though the cuts are far less than what we wanted.
What more can be gained by risking a default? Paraphrasing Barry Goldwater, my friend Bill Kristol wrote this morning, "victory over Obama is no vice. And losing to Obama is no virtue."
A lot of conservatives are saying that politics do not matter. That's ridiculous. If Obama is reelected, if Harry Reid remains the Senate Majority Leader and if Nancy Pelosi returns as Speaker of the House, nothing we accomplish now will matter. It will all be undone within days of Obama's second term.
Our ultimate goal has to be to send Obama back to Chicago. Then and only then can we save our country from a debt crisis, restore American prestige abroad and break our drift toward European socialism.
Imagine No GOP Majority
I'm hearing from more and more frustrated conservatives saying that House Republicans aren't doing anything. This makes my blood boil! House Republicans have done a lot.
Yesterday they voted 279-to-147 to require Obama to approve the construction of a new oil pipeline from Canada so that we could get more oil from an ally, rather than the Middle East. Even 47 Democrats voted for this bill once it reached the floor.
But the most useful thing House Republicans have accomplished is preventing the worst of Obama's agenda from going forward. Just imagine if there was no GOP majority today. Think about where we would be if Nancy Pelosi were still Speaker.
Two years ago we were debating an $800 billion stimulus bill, massive cap and trade energy taxes and a trillion-dollar socialized medicine scheme. If Pelosi were in power today, we would likely be fighting a massive amnesty bill and huge tax increases right now.
I'm not suggesting that your frustration isn't valid - just that it is misplaced. The pipeline bill the House passed yesterday will not become law. It will die in the Democrat Senate. Not because of Mitch McConnell, but because Harry Reid controls the majority. You are frustrated because we have not been winning enough elections.
Again, we need to stay focused on the real goal - winning the 2012 elections. We need to stop forming circular firing squads and remember who our friends are.
Christians United For Israel
The Christians United For Israel Washington Summit concluded last week, but the impact of that tremendous event is still being felt. During the summit, David Brog, CUFI's executive director, and I sat down for an interview with CBN's Erick Stakelbeck, talking about the importance of the U.S./Israeli alliance and Christian support for Israel. You can watch the interview here.

The U. S. State Department yesterday announced that the Obama Administration has agreed to contribute $4 billion to the United Nations Global Fund to fight AIDs, Tuberculosis, and Malaria from 2011 to 2013.
The $4 billion represents a 38% increase over the previous U.S. commitment to the fund.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that a total of $11.7 billion has been raised from 40 countries, the European Commission, faith-based organizations, private foundations, and various corporations.
This means that over one-third of the money will come from the pockets of US taxpayers.

Red Tape Rising: A 2011 Mid-Year Report
By James Gattuso and Diane Katz
Abstract: Following a record year of rulemaking, the Obama Administration is continuing to unleash more costly red tape. In the first six months of the 2011 fiscal year, 15 major regulations were issued, with annual costs exceeding $5.8 billion and one-time implementation costs approaching $6.5 billion. No major rulemaking actions were taken to reduce regulatory burdens during this period. Overall, the Obama Administration imposed 75 new major regulations from January 2009 to mid-FY 2011, with annual costs of $38 billion. There were only six major deregulatory actions during that time, with reported savings of just $1.5 billion. This flood of red tape will undoubtedly persist, as hundreds of new regulations stemming from the vast Dodd-Frank financial regulation law, Obamacare, and the EPA's global warming crusade advance through the regulatory pipeline-all of which further weakens an anemic economy and job creation, while undermining Americans' fundamental freedoms. Action by Congress as well as the President to stem this regulatory surge is essential.

Please give now . I am grateful for conservative allies like you.
Sincerely, Edwin J. Feulner, Ph.D. President The Heritage Foundation

The New Deal's bargain was that Americans would trade higher taxes and less economic freedom for a social safety net. That was until the left decided that the social safety net was actually a wealth redistribution platform. The social safety net slid into the welfare state, a program of subsidies for reliable Democratic voters at the expense of the general public. Now the Social Security Trust Fund has been looted and FDR II is threatening that benefits won't be paid if congress doesn't commit to another extended deficit spending binge. Not on behalf of the social safety net, but the nanny and the welfare state. The Democratic party loves taking credit for the social safety net, but they have proven to be completely irresponsible trustees, squandering the trust by borrowing against the sum, and then borrowing against the debt to fund an entirely separate agenda. What began as security for workers mutated into a bureaucracy that existed for its own sake expanding benefits and spending to bulk up its power and influence. The old worker centered universe was turned upside down. Private sector unions gave way to public sector unions. A non-union public was suddenly forced to subsidize the municipal crony unions of Democratic politicians. Corporate health insurance became mandatory. Illegal aliens showed up for the free health insurance. And the taxpayer kept picking up the tab. Now the system is on the brink, and the trustees have no answer except more spending and a few cuts.

"[T]he duty imposed upon [the president] to take care, that the laws be faithfully executed, follows out the strong injunctions of his oath of office, that he will 'preserve, protect, and defend the constitution.' The great object of the executive department is to accomplish this purpose." --Joseph Story

Obama seems to think he is Caesar
"At his Friday news conference-cum-tantrum, Barack Obama imperiously summoned congressional leaders to his presence: 'I've told' them 'I want them here at 11 a.m.' By Saturday, his administration seemed to be cultivating chaos by suddenly postulating a new deadline: The debt-ceiling impasse must end before Asian markets opened Sunday evening Eastern time, lest the heavens fall. Those markets opened; the heavens held. ... Obama has marginalized himself. Inordinate self-regard is an occupational hazard of politics and part of the job description of the rhetorical presidency, this incessant tutor. Still, upon what meat doth this our current Caesar feed that he has grown so great that he presumes to command leaders of a coequal branch of government? He once boasted (June 3, 2008) that he could influence the oceans' rise; he must be disabused of comparable delusions about controlling Congress." --columnist George Will
"The national debt-ceiling law should be judged by what it actually does, not by how good an idea it seems to be. The one thing that the national debt-ceiling has never done is to put a ceiling on the rising national debt. Time and time again, for years on end, the national debt-ceiling has been raised whenever the national debt gets near whatever the current ceiling might be. Regardless of what it is supposed to do, what the national debt-ceiling actually does is enable any administration to get all the political benefits of runaway spending for the benefit of their favorite constituencies -- and then invite the opposition party to share the blame, by either raising the national debt ceiling, or by voting for unpopular cutbacks in spending or increases in taxes." --economist Thomas Sowell
"The Boehner [debt ceiling] proposal would cut $1.2 trillion in discretionary spending. There is no assurance that these cuts will occur, but let's assume they do. Let's even be generous and assume that they are -- in the words of S&P -- 'enacted and maintained throughout the decade.' This would cut debt held by the public from its projected $24.9 trillion in 2021 to $23.7 trillion, and when measured against the economy from 104% to 99.4%. Certainly, this is an improvement, but it is hardly declining from today's levels, nor would these cuts fundamentally restructure entitlements -- the real driver of our deficits in the future." --Heritage Foundation's Alison Acosta Fraser
"We have an entire Democrat party and a substantial portion of the Republican one engaged in economic appeasement. It's most viable slogan is some variation about solving our economic mess by making the rich 'pay their fair share.' ... Is it really about taxing people who earn in excess of a million dollars a year? Or is it closer to the $250,000 that would encompass substantially more Americans, including the small business owners who are the backbone of America's job-creating engine? Moreover, what happens when taxing the rich 'fairly' still leaves us adding to the national debt?" --columnist Arnold Ahlert
The Demo-gogues
King for a day: "The idea of doing things on my own is very tempting. ... But that's not how our system works. That's not how our democracy functions. That's not how our Constitution is written. Let's be honest, I need a dance partner here, and the floor is empty." --Barack Obama
Past is prologue: "In the past, raising the debt ceiling was routine. Since the 1950s, Congress has always passed it, and every president has signed it. ... Bush did it seven times." --Barack Obama (Wait -- we thought "Bush did it" was a bad thing.)
Class warfare: "I want everybody in American to do well. I want everybody to have a chance to become a millionaire. I think the free market system is the greatest wealth generator we have ever known. This is not about punishing wealth. This is about asking people who have benefited the most over the last decade to share in the sacrifice, and I think these patriotic Americans are willing to pitch in -- if they're asked -- because they know that middle class families shouldn't have to pick up the whole tab for closing the deficit." --Barack Obama
"Why do they cut and cap our hopes and dreams? To protect tax breaks for the millionaires and the billionaires. It's quite obvious. They call them -- what do they call them? The job creators. They say, 'don't tax the job creators.' ... [T]hat's just so much bull. Let's put that baby to rest." --Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
Just keep spending: "The current, so-called 'debt crisis' has been completely manufactured by House Republicans attempting to advance an extremist agenda. This should be a simple vote to allow the U.S. Treasury to fund all of the programs and obligations of the entire federal government that are already in the law. Enough is enough. We should immediately pass a clean bill to raise the debt ceiling so that we can work on the real crisis in this country -- the jobs crisis." --Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA)
Hot air: "[Many scientists] say that the heat waves, droughts, fires, and floods that are afflicting our nation are harbingers of the dangers we face if we continue to ignore the threat of climate change. Yet at the same time that the scientific evidence has grown stronger and extreme weather has become more frequent and intense, the public's understanding of the danger has been diminishing. ... I ask you to investigate the disconnect that appears to be growing between the scientific and the public understanding of climate change. I hope you will then decide to lead a national effort to ensure the public is fully and accurately informed about the science of climate change and its implications for human health and welfare." --Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-CA) in a letter to Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu
Dezinformatsia
Crazy Tea Party: "In an impressive display of mendacity, [House Speaker John] Boehner told the American people the president wants 'a blank check' to keep on spending, and the House GOP is serving 'the American people' by resisting. Instead of talking about how he and Obama might close the gap they faced only three days ago, Boehner went full-tilt Tea Party crazy and presented his own plan, which requires not only brutal spending cuts but a balanced budget amendment -- as well as another congressional vote to hike the debt ceiling again at the height of the 2012 election season. Can there be any doubt that the Republicans' only interest here is making Obama fail?" --Salon's Joan Walsh
"Watching the extraordinary polarization in Washington today, many people have pointed the finger at the Tea Party. It's ideologically extreme, refuses to compromise, and cares more about purity than problem solving." --CNN's Fareed Zakaria
"If sane Republicans do not stand up to this Hezbollah faction in their midst, the Tea Party will take the G.O.P. on a suicide mission." --New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman
"What's going on here, as I see it, is a kind of slow motion secession. This is an ending of the social compact. This is three generations worth of agreement about Social Security, about Medicare, about the role of the federal government. The Tea Party people are saying, we want to secede from that society. And the way to do it is to draw the line on spending and taxes, to starve the federal government so that it loses power, so that we aren't part of the social compact anymore. And that's the real argument that's going on." --former Newsweek editor Howard Fineman
Just raise taxes: "I don't understand how 236 members, by the way, sign a pledge of no taxes before they even start coming in to compromise." --NBC's Andrea Mitchell
Belly Laugh of the Week: "[MSNBC's] audience has a progressive point of view. Now, it's not an ideology, because we differ often in how we get there, but it's challenging all the status quo and trying to figure out how to make the world better. It's challenging what's going on in Washington. We've got smart people, and they do their research. But yes, we do have a sensibility and we embrace it, but we're about ideas." --MSNBC president Phil Griffin

Village IdiotsJust love paying taxes: "Most people who join country clubs, or gyms, or other exclusive entities in America, feel ... proud to pay that monthly due, because they want to be part of that special privileged community in which they receive wonderful resources and benefits. [Americans] should feel that same kind of awe and respect for paying taxes. ... [W]e shouldn't have an aversion to paying some amount of taxes." --Faiz Shakir, editor of ThinkProgress.org Scare tactic or threat? "Just remember, this is the United States of America. We write 80 million checks a month. There are millions and millions of Americans that depend on those checks coming on time. Not just people that supply our military, but people who get Social Security benefits, Medicare [and] Medicaid benefits. And we cannot put those payments at risk and we do not have the ability to limit the damage on them if Congress fails to act in time." --Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who by the way loved paying taxes enough to avoid them himself That's racist: "Is there any real reason to believe ... that one of the reasons Congress will not vote to put the economy in the black because the economy is in the hands of the black? That seems extraordinarily harsh and divisive. But the reality is, there seems to be no logical or reasonable answer or response to the notion other than they want to deny this Democrat and this particular president the victory of having the ability to forge consensus here around the reality of American debt." --Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson Essential Liberty"We must now add Norway to the expanding list of unsafe places that includes Columbine, Oklahoma City, the World Trade Center, London, Madrid, Ft. Hood and Virginia Tech. ... Police are calling the gunman, Anders Behring Breivik, a 'Christian fundamentalist' because we must have labels (except when describing Muslim fundamentalists, which police, politicians and much of the media try to avoid for fear of angering Islamists). ... Norway forbids civilians from carrying concealed weapons, or owning an automatic weapon, unless they are gun collectors. As in America, gun laws do not deter criminals who are determined to cause harm with a weapon. What would have deterred Breivik would have been a gun in the hands of a competent person capable of stopping his mass-murdering spree." --columnist Cal Thomas Editorial Exegesis"New Census data show that the recent economic crash has erased decades of minority gains in wealth. The net worth of whites is now 20 times higher than for blacks and 18 times higher than for Hispanics, both records. For white households, the median net worth (assets minus liabilities) in 2009 was $113,149. That compares to $6,325 for Hispanics and $5,677 for black Americans. There are, of course, many reasons for this. While minority families gained from the economic growth of the the 1980s, 1990s and mid-2000s, much of their wealth was tied up in their homes. When the housing market crashed in 2008, so did their net worth. Meanwhile, whites have been helped by the rebound in stock prices in the last two years. Stock market investments, including IRAs, 401(k)s and other market-based accounts, make up 28% of white Americans' wealth, vs. just 19% for blacks and 15% for Hispanics. If nothing else, these data point out the failure of federal welfare and anti-poverty policies to do what they intended: eradicate wealth differences in our country. ... Today, some 44 million Americans are on food stamps. In 2007, it was 26 million. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner recently boasted that U.S. issues more than 80 million checks a month. But while the U.S. has more than 70 means-tested welfare programs, the poverty rate today is higher than it was in the late 1960s. How can that be? '(M)ost anti-poverty/welfare spending erodes work and marriage,' wrote Robert Rector, a Heritage Foundation economist, in a recent report. 'As a result ... low-income Americans are less capable of self-support than when the War on Poverty began.' ... The road to hell, it's said, is paved with good intentions. But sometimes it's paved with taxpayers' money." --Investor's Business Daily Short Cuts"American voters should have no patience for plans based on tax increases that never produce the amount of revenue they claim, in exchange for forming committees to discuss spending cuts that never actually happen, resulting in hypothetical deficit reduction that isn't big enough to matter." --columnist John Hayward "President Obama named Rich Cordray to head the new Consumer Protection Agency. President of the lieJuly 26, 2011 David Kupelian © 2011 WND
"I hate to disrespect the president, but he's lying."
That was TV commentator Dick Morris last night on Fox's "Hannity," talking about Barack Obama's primetime speech in which the president once again warned Americans their government was on the verge of catastrophic default.
"This is total fear tactics, and it's a lie - a big lie!" added Morris. (I recently wrote a column explaining the "big lie" of Aug. 2 default in a way any 8-year-old can understand.)
But what I want to focus on here is Morris's qualifier, "I hate to disrespect the president, but ..."
I sympathize with Morris's personal and professional awkwardness in calling the president of the United States a liar. I've seen my good friend Sean Hannity struggle with this same awkwardness many times: He nails an outright lie the president has told, and may even use the word "lie," but his delivery is usually accompanied by a certain discomfort at having to speak the truth so nakedly.
There's a good reason for this reticence and awkwardness. Read more: President of the lie

Going Galt without even knowing it

By Basil Irwin, staff writer
A blogger named David McElroy recently wrote of a Birmingham (Alabama) businessman who, after listening to a room full of moochers and leeches piss whine and moan about the evils of business, publicly threw in the towel regarding his attempt to open a new coal mine.
David compared what happened to a scene right out of "Atlas Shrugged" and then mused, "But I wonder how long it's going to be before businesspeople really do start walking away and deciding it's not worth doing business in America today. Or is it already happening and we just don't know it?"
Well, David, it's going on right now all around us and we do in fact know all about it. I have a good friend from high school who was drafted in the Vietnam era, then earned his civil engineering Bachelor of Science degree afterward at N.C. State via the GI Bill. He started his ... In recent years, homeowners have been made to feel a bit like villains rather than the victims of hard times, Wall Street shenanigans and inept regulators. Instead of being praised for braving the elements, suburban homeowners have been made to feel responsible for everything from the Great Recession to obesity to global warming.

Juan Williams' Wife: NPR Liberals Are Hypocrites
Wednesday, 20 Jul 2011
By Ronald Kessler
Delise Williams, the wife of Fox News contributor Juan Williams, tells Newsmax that "so-called liberals" at NPR treated her - a light-skinned African-American - as if she didn't exist. "The NPR people were hypocrites because they are supposed to be the liberals who are accepting of all kinds of people and inclusive, and they were the most exclusive group in my experience of going to events related to work that I have ever seen," says Delise, a former social worker who is the daughter of a doctor. Juan Williams' book "Muzzled: The Assault on Honest Debate" hits bookstores next week. It reveals that for years before NPR fired him, NPR executives harassed him over what he did or did not say on the air.

This six-seater tax, which should be available in India next year, is powered entirely by a tank filled with compressed air.
India's largest automaker is set to start producing the world's first commercial air-powered vehicle. The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre for Luxembourg-based MDI, uses compressed air, as opposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internal-combustion models, to push its engine's pistons. Some 6000 zero-emissions Air Cars are scheduled to hit Indian streets in August of 2008.
Barring any last-minute design changes on the way to production, the Air Car should be surprisingly practical. The $12,700 CityCAT, one of a handful of planned Air Car models, can hit 68 mph and has a range of 125 miles. It will take only a few minutes for the CityCAT to refuel at gas stations equipped with custom air compressor units; MDI says it should cost around $2 to fill the car's carbon-fiber tanks with 340 liters of air at 4350 psi. Drivers also will be able to plug into the electrical grid and use the car's built-in compressor to refill the tanks in about 4 hours.
Of course, the Air Car will likely never hit American shores, especially considering its all-glue construction. But that doesn't mean the major automakers can write it off as a bizarre Indian experiment - MDI has signed deals to bring its design to 12 more countries, including Germany, Israel and South Africa.

The "Dirty Little Secret Behind the Chevy Volt".... The Rest of the Story
By Red Nek Engineer
Patrick Michaels is a senior fellow in Environmental Studies at the Cato Institute and the editor of the forthcoming Climate Coup: Global Warming's Invasion of our Government and our Lives, as well as the author of several other books on global warming.
His Forbes column on the Chevy Volt is a case study in the nexus between big government corruption and big business rent-seeking.
Michaels briefly recaps the well-known consumer fraud in which GM has touted the Volt as an all-electric mass production vehicle on the supposed basis of which its sales receive a $7,500 taxpayer subsidy, which still renders it overpriced and unmarketable.
Michaels notes that "sales are anemic: 326 in December, 321 in January, and 281 in February."
There seems to be a trend here.

A Taiwan-born congressman says he is resigning in the aftermath of allegations that he had a sexual encounter with an 18-year-old woman.
Democratic leaders had set up a House Ethics investigation after the initial reports of the allegation against seven-term Democrat David Wu had said that whatever occurred was consensual.

CBO scores both plans as not really cutting much
There is no real plan
The Senate Democratic debt-limit bill would cut future spending by $2.2 trillion over 10 years - much deeper than the House GOP alternative, according to figures Congress' chief scorekeeper released early Wednesday.
The Congressional Budget Office said the plan by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would raise the government's borrowing limit by $2.7 trillion, and cut $2.2 trillion from future spending, chiefly by limiting the amount of money spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Republicns introduce legislation to prevent NLRB from dictating location of American jobs
Not a bad plan
U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairman John Kline (R-MN) issued the following statement today after cosponsoring the Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act, introduced by Rep. Tim Scott (R-SC) earlier this afternoon. Reps. Phil Roe (R-TN), Joe Wilson (R-SC), and Trey Gowdy (R-SC) have signed on as original cosponsors of the legislation.
The Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act will prohibit the National Labor Relations Board from dictating where a private business can and cannot locate jobs in the United States. On April 20, the NLRB filed a complaint against The Boeing Company for creating work in South Carolina and demanded the work be transferred to Puget Sound, Washington. If successful, the NLRB's action may destroy an estimated 1,000 South Carolina jobs and have a chilling effect on job creators across the country.

Tea Party News Wednesday, July 27th
Senator DeMint Open to Busting August 2 Default Deadline | "It's better to take it past August 2 and wait for something that solves the problem. The Democrats and the president will start talking about something real if they think we're going past August 2." Even if a deal is reached, Senate rules make it possible for a single individual to delay a vote by as much as 60 hours. DeMint also criticized the two main plans before the House and Senate saying that only the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act, which was defeated last week, solves the nation's debt problem and "puts the country on a path towards a balanced budget." The other plans "just kick the can down the road." It's uncharted territory. Even DeMint can't quite believe congressional leaders will give him a chance to test his theory. Faced with the prospect of default or accepting a proposal that they feel offers only "nominal" cuts, conservatives are "trying to weigh the consequences of which is worse," [National Journal, July 26] Click here for the complete source story

The 2012 argument for John Boehner's plan | The Wall Street Journal and Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol both weighed in strongly in favor of John Boehner's debt ceiling plan today, arguing that the bill will help Republicans defeat President Obama in 2012, in addition to having a positive impact on the deficit. The Journal: The Speaker has made mistakes in his debt negotiations, not least in trusting that Mr. Obama wants serious fiscal reforms. But thanks to the President's overreaching on taxes, Mr. Boehner now has the GOP positioned in sight of a political and policy victory. If his plan or something close to it becomes law, Democrats will have conceded more spending cuts than they thought possible, and without getting the GOP to raise taxes and without being able to blame Republicans for a debt-limit crackup or economic damage. If conservatives defeat the Boehner plan, they'll not only undermine their House majority. They'll go far to re-electing Mr. Obama and making the entitlement state that much harder to reform. Boehner: 'Get your ass in line' | Scrambling for votes on his troubled deficit package, Speaker John Boehner told GOP lawmakers to "get your ass in line" behind his debt ceiling bill, saying the Senate will fold and pass it. Boehner postponed the vote until Thursday after the Congressional Budget Office said it was $150 billion short of the $1 trillion goal. Many GOP lawmakers are still undecided whether they will back the measure. Boehner predicted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Democrats will have to pass his proposal once the House does. Reid has an alternate plan to cut $2.7 trillion. While Boehner tried to adjust to his setback, Reid was enjoying a boost from the independent, non-partisan office, which said the Reid bill would save $2.2 trillion over the next decade - almost triple what Boehner's bill would. Fear monger? Pelosi says GOP hates food safety, clean air, clean water
The left often accuses the GOP of fear mongering, so Nancy Pelosi's latest rant would seem to qualify as hypocrisy. Pelosi skipped the pleasantries and told union workers that the GOP wants to 'destroy' everything, adding that they hate food safety, clean air and clean water. Man it's tough being a Republican - so much hatin' to do, so little time! Check out Glenn's reaction to Pelosi's nonsense at GlennBeck.com!
Jay Carney: Yeah, we don't have a plan
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney took some heat for Obama's lack of a plan and had a testy exchange with Fox News reporter Ed Henry (Henry recently left CNN). Carney didn't like the press pushing him on his weak explanation - and it was clearly weak because Carney had to resort to cheap personal attacks on the press. How'd that go over? Not well. Glenn has the audio and reaction HERE.
