1. Bachmann, Gingrich, and Romney. Oh My! And Then There's Rick Perry.

I think Mitt Romney did not just win the New Hampshire debate by holding his own, but legitimately won it with his answers and composure. He was unnecessarily defensive on the Afghan question, but largely showed his experience with Presidential debates.

The surprise last night was Michelle Bachmann. If there was a winner of the anti-Romney coalition, Michelle Bachmann not only one, but won by a wide margin. Suddenly, for many, the flirtation toward Herman Cain and others will go in Bachmann's direction. Bachmann's stellar performance also contrasted with Tim Pawlenty who could have sealed the deal, or taken substantial steps toward sealing the deal, of being the anti-Romney candidate. Had his backing off of "Obamneycare" been later in the debate, i think it would have done less damage. But coming so soon into the debate, it clouded the rest of his performance, which had some really good moments. His defense of "right to work" was stellar.

 

2. Conservatives Must Oppose Patent 'Reform'

Some issues are just boring. It seems as if every time they are brought up, collective eyes glaze over. Unfortunately, a lot of bad policies can escape the normal vetting process when that many people are that bored by an entire subject area. So I can understand how the latest version of patent reform-the America Invents Act (H.R. 1249)-came to be scheduled for floor consideration this week.

But the conservative movement has been raising serious concerns with key portions of patent reform for years, particularly the proposed switch from a "first-to-invent" to a "first-to-file" system. Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution authorizes Congress, "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries." The fact that the "Inventor" is specifically mentioned led the U.S. to adopt a "first-to-invent" test when disputes arise. Most of the rest of the world now uses a "first-to-file" system that rewards whoever submits their patent application first, regardless of whether the evidence shows that they were the inventor. Obviously, the first-to-file system favors deep pockets that can handle and expedite the paper work.

Proponents of the change argue that it is more efficient and would better harmonize with the rest of the world. It is more efficient, and it would better harmonize with the rest of the world, but that does not mean it is wise. It is important to note that we are descendants of the Glorious Revolution and English common law, which developed a strong public policy preference for private property rights not shared by the rest of the world. Incumbent in private property rights is a protection for an inventor of his patent, regardless of whether someone else files first for something the inventor invented first.

3. It's Game Time for Farm Subsidies and Ethanol in Washington

This week's legislative schedule in both houses of Congress will provide Republicans (and faux moderate Democrats) a unique opportunity to efface farm welfare by eliminating ethanol credits/tariffs and direct farm subsidies.

On the House side, the annual Agriculture Appropriations bill is expected to hit the floor as early as Tuesday. Earlier this month, the Appropriations Committee passed the FY 2012 Ag bill, cutting $2.6 billion from 2011 spending levels, and most notably, $686 million from the WIC program. The committee also approved an amendment by Jeff Flake to cut off direct subsidies for farms owned by those with more than $250,000 in gross adjusted income.

The bill is a good start, however, there are still more cuts that need to be introduced during the floor amendment process.

4. End subsidies to ethanol

We've Key Voted a "Yes" vote to Senator Coburn's Amendment to kill Ethanol Subsidies.

Bad economic policy should be eliminated. Period. Exclamation point. End of story.

We have an opportunity to strike deep into the heart of Big Ethanol - Senator Coburn's Amendment repeals not only the tax credit, but it also repeals the tariff on imported ethanol. It's a great first step on the way to ridding the tax code of market-distorting energy subsidies and sends a message that Republicans are serious about tax reform.

Ethanol subsidies are an abomination. They are simply a form of corporate welfare. Their elimination would be pro-growth.

Senator Coburn's Amendment is #436 to S. 782 and will most likely be voted on tomorrow. He needs 60 votes for cloture. Please join me in supporting his efforts.

5. Texans: It's time to take action against the Amazon / Internet Sales Tax

State governments are timid beasts. So often the country will refuse to move in a new policy direction unless one state jumps out ahead and acts first. In the past, California was often the dynamic frontrunner. Now, Texas is increasingly the example that other states ought to follow.

When it comes to the Amazon Tax, or the plan to change the tax laws in Texas to punish Amazon for out-competing its competitors, it looked like Texas was ready to lead in the the right direction. Governor Rick Perry vetoed HB 2403, the initial attempt at passing a special Amazon Tax in the state.

But the forces of tax-and-spend politics haven't given up yet. Even as Texas celebrates its first all-funds spending reduction in decades, it seems like some people haven't given up on raising taxes. So, the Amazon tax was re-inserted into SB 1 in the special session.

No matter what bill it's in, a special Internet Sales Tax is a bad idea, and takes Texas in the wrong direction.

In those 67 years, at every level of government, black Americans have been overwhelmingly staunch supporters of the Democrat party. What black Americans have gotten in return is an education system in which black children lag consistently behind their white counterparts, by an average of almost four years. Yet for 67 years, Democrats have promised black Americans that they're going to make things better for their communities, as long as they keep hitching their wagons to the Democrat party star. After two-thirds of a century, one might be inclined to think that more than a few black Americans might be inclined to ask the question, 'what have you done for me lately,' as in how come our children keep getting the short end of the educational stick after more than three generations of party loyalty? Yet in order to ask that question, one must know history and have learned to think for oneself. Knowledge of history and an ability to think independently require a decent education. Democrats around the nation are making sure that doesn't happen. In short, union campaign funds are more important than the education of black children, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to explain how a status quo that ought be considered criminal could survive every challenge that's been thrown at it." --columnist Arnold Ahlert

Editor's reply: First, the Defense of Marriage Act was signed into law September 21, 1996, by Bill Clinton, who said: "I remain opposed to same-sex marriage. I believe marriage is an institution for the union of a man and a woman. This has been my long-standing position, and it is not being reviewed or reconsidered." The legislation passed by overwhelming majorities of both Democrats and Republicans, 85-14 in the Senate and a vote of 342-67 in the House. The record reflects something quite more than a "Jerry Falwell/Dr. James Dobson, Mormon Church, US Council of Catholic Bishops" agenda and "satisfying the cries of right wing evangelicals" rather than seeking the truth.

 

Second, for the record, there is no constitutional basis to assert that gender identity is a civil right. You can push for an amendment if you want, or take the liberal route and amend it by judicial diktat, but this assertion has no basis under Rule of Law.

Third, my guide and test for Truth in this and all matters, starting with Liberty, is not predicated on public opinion polls or the actions of other nations.

Last, as I wrote, I support your liberty to practice your individual beliefs and behaviors right up unto the point at which you propose to impose your redefinition of nature upon others. The homosexual political agenda is something quite apart from the practice of your personal choices and behavior. I will continue to "out" the Left's agenda for what it is, including the errant argument that all of society should support the homosexual pathos, which offends "the laws of nature and nature's God."

In a sane world, Americans would be outraged at the government waste that confronts them everywhere you turn: The abolition of the federal Education Department and the TSA is the very least they should be demanding. Bin Laden lauds Arab Spring in posthumous tape

Al-Qaida has released a posthumous audio recording by Osama bin Laden in which the Islamist group's ex-leader praises the revolutions sweeping the Arab world.

 

In the audio, the former al-Qaida leader, who was killed in a U.S. raid on May 2 in Pakistan, expressed joy at the victory of uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia amid the so-called Arab Spring, Reuters reported.

In the audio, bin Laden talks about how the movement started in the Maghreb region of North Africa.

Obama calls for Israel to pack up multiple thousands and move them out of their homes and communities.  He tells them to trust the genocide-for-Jews Arabs to "swap land."  He dishonestly proclaims the Arabs will "disarm to a de-militarized state,"( yeah, right).  Obama then says discussions on "the division of Jerusalem," and the "return" of Arabs will be the next topics.  This is so outrageous and biased that any fair minded person must see Obama for the Arab advocate that he is.  Anyone who cares about Israel, but still supports Obama, is willfully blind.

        The trove of more than 13,000 emails detailing almost every aspect of Sarah Palin's governorship of Alaska, released late on Friday, paints a picture of her as an idealistic, conscientious, humorous and humane woman slightly bemused by the world of politics.
        One can only assume that the Left-leaning editors who dispatched teams of reporters to remote Juneau, the Alaskan capital, to pore over the emails in the hope of digging up a scandal are now viewing the result as a rather poor return on their considerable investment.
        If anything, Mrs Palin seems likely to emerge from the scrutiny of the 24,000 pages, contained in six boxes and weighing 275 pounds, with her reputation considerably enhanced.
        She is, however, viewed with a kind of horrified fascination by many in the media, who faithfully records everything she says and does while at the same time decrying her as ignorant and even evil. [Telegraph, June 12]      Click here for the source story

        Former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu has narrowed down his picks for president in 2012 to three men who have held the same job in other states - Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney and Rick Perry, should Perry throw his hat in the ring.
        The Granite State Republican stalwart, who served as chief of staff for former President George H.W. Bush, said he is partial to those with executive experience because "you need more experience than being a community organizer to run this country."
        Sununu and his son, former New Hampshire Sen. John E. Sununu, both appeared Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" with Candy Crowley. The younger Sununu said governors are attractive because of their "chief executive experience, leadership, decision-making, handling all the aspects of the budget, dealing with different political constituencies."

House Republicans go after federal employee union contributions

        House Republicans this week introduced legislation that would give federal employees a choice in whether a portion of their salary is sent to federal employee unions, which sponsors say would help break the "strong-hold that labor unions have on American politics and the federal budget."
        "This bill does not prohibit federal workers from joining a union or paying union dues," said Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), chief sponsor of H.R. 2145. "In fact, this legislation would increase employees' freedom by allowing them to choose to pay union dues rather than having them taken out of employees' paychecks before the workers even see the money."
        Scott said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) would be introducing companion legislation in the Senate sometime this week. AFP-PA OPPOSES SPENDING "SURPLUS"

With the governor and the legislature in the final days of creating and passing the 2011-12 General Fund Budget, many voices are clamoring for increased spending in their area of interest. For some Senate leaders, the unexpected 'surplus' of nearly $500 million dollars is like the proverbial 'money burning a hole in their pockets.'

As adults, we understand that just because you have a little spare change, you don't need to spend it.  Considering the magnitude of this state's debt, this 'surplus' amounts to nothing more than spare change, but there is a very important principle here nonetheless. There is simply no justification for increased spending. Until the bills are paid, and there is no debt, there is no surplus.

 
AFP-PA urgently calls on the governor and the Republican leaders in the House and Senate to reject any request to spend this 'surplus' for the following reasons:

·         It is fiscally and ethically dishonest to call this a 'surplus'.

·         There can be NO honest surplus when the state is in debt. The facts are that the state has an actual debt of $92.3 billion!  (Institute for Truth in Accounting Report)[1]  The debt is comprised of $59 billion in reported liabilities but $33.4 billion in unreported pension obligations. Then there is a nearly $4 billion debt of unemployment compensation owed to the federal government; and $800 million owed to the medical malpractice fund (Mcare Fund) which was inappropriately spent by Governor Rendell.

·         To spend any of this 'surplus' is to demonstrate a serious lack of personal discipline and a total disregard to the fiscal state of this Commonwealth and the economic condition of our state's economy.

·         In presenting this state budget, the Governor and legislative leaders have made no provision for the payment of this Commonwealth's known debts. To spend this 'surplus' would reflect a further disregard for their Constitutional oath to support a balanced budget and a disrespect for the citizens to whom this debt is owed.

What should be done with this money? Under normal conditions, this money would be placed in the mandatory savings account called the Rainy Day Fund.  However, when our former governor and legislative leaders agreed to accept Federal Stimulus funds, they also agreed to a federal mandate that prohibited the Commonwealth from putting any money into the Rainy Day Fund. With this voluntary restriction in place, there is only one right thing to do. This 'surplus' money should be used to fulfill our debt obligations such as to the State Pension System and to the payback of our $800 million debt to the Mcare Fund.

This is from Mark Knoller of CBS.  The pilots and crew of Air Force One are

flying more hours than a rookie on a beer run.  They are tired of it too, and

are adding more crew to Air Force-1, -  I know this for a fact because I'm

one of the instructors that trains the crews. Our company (Atlas Air) has had

the Air Force-1 and E-4 contract for over two years and I've been doing it

for about 8 months now.

 

 

          Last year (2010) Obama flew in Air Force

          One 172 times, almost every other day.

 

 

 

White House officials have been telling reporters in recent days that the

Democrat doesn't intend to hang around the White House quite so much

in 2011.  They explain he wants to get out more around the country

because, as everyone knows, that midterm election shellacking on

Nov. 2 had nothing to do with his health care bill, over-spending or

other policies, and everything to do with Obama's not adequately

explaining himself to his countrymen and women.

 

 

 

And with only 673 days remaining in Obama's never ending presidential

campaign, the incumbent's travel pace will not likely slacken.

 

 

Its an Air Force-estimated cost of $181,757 per flight HOUR (not to mention the additional travel costs of

Marine One, Secret Service, logistics and local police overtime),

that's a lot of frequent flier dollars going into Obama's carbon

footprint. $80 Million every time it lands & takes off .

 

 

 

 We are privy to some of these numbers thanks to CBS' Mark Knoller, a

bearded national treasure trove of presidential stats.

 

According to Knoller's copious notes, during the last year, Obama

made 65 domestic trips over 104 days, and six trips to eight

countries over 22 days.  Not counting six vacation trips over 32

days.

 

 

He took 196 helicopter trips, signed 203 pieces of legislation and squeezed in 29 rounds of left-handed golf.

 

 

Obama last year gave 491 speeches, remarks or statements.  That's more

talking than goes on in some entire families, at least from fatherly

mouths.

  In  fact, even including the 24 days of 2010 that we never saw Obama in

public, his speaking works out to about one official utterance every 11

waking hours.  Aides indicate the "Real Good Talker" believes we need more.

After spending 12 years protecting presidents, candidates, and world leaders, including George W Bush, he shadowed Mr Obama for nearly two years and was frequently by his side as the president met the public.

He was also the lead agent for coordinating Mr Obama's trips to Prague, Jakarta and Afghanistan.

Guarding US presidents is regarded as the greatest honour the Secret Service can offer, and agents are trained to throw themselves between a gunman and the president in the event of an assassination attempt.

Obama announces plan to cut government waste

President takes on gov't waste

 

President Barack Obama announced a new effort Monday to eliminate government waste and named his vice president to lead it.

  

Obama signed an executive order that creates an oversight board to work with federal departments and agencies to cut waste and improve performance, according to a draft of the order obtained by The Associated Press. Vice President Joe Biden will meet regularly with Cabinet secretaries to chart progress.

President trots out his CEO

 

President Barack Obama told almost two dozen current and former company leaders, including General Electric Co. (GE) Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt, that he'll need their backing to get legislation through Congress that will help drive job growth.

  

Meeting with his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness in Durham, North Carolina, Obama said that while private industry is the main engine for job creation, the government has a role in making sure workers are trained and that regulations don't stand in the way of enterprise.

Send Education Dollars and Decision-Making Back Home

The Obama Administration has another problem on its hands. The mighty hand of the federal government has its grip on education in the form of the No Child Left Behind federal law on public education, but the trouble is that the law isn't working. Instead of a top-down approach to education, it's time for restoring state and local control over education, while downsizing the Department of Education.

That's a lesson that Education Secretary Arne Duncan needs to learn.

So giddy were the MSM over the prospect of combing through Sarah Palin's 'treasure trove' of emails from when she was governor, some outlets enlisted the help of 100 'researchers' to find items that will 'hopefully lead to further investigation.' They were certain scandal after scandal awaited, but what they found was the exact opposite. Not only were there no scandals, the emails actually show Palin is funny, honest, consistent, compassionate, likable -- it all amounts to another humiliating defeat in the relentless quest to destroy Sarah Palin. NYPD scolds tourist for wearing distracting short skirt (pic)

Controversy erupted on the Glenn Beck Program today when Stu and Glenn took opposite sides on a crucial story. A 31-year-old Dutch tourist was allegedly scolded by NYPD because she was wearing a skirt that was so short it was 'distracting' to drivers and could cause accidents. Glenn says the skirt is nothing compared to the ones New Yorkers wear that more or less resemble 'belts.' Stu says it looks like a 'stripper bike' and with an inopportune gust of wind 'the whole package is out there' and the cops were correct. What do you think? Is it real?
