"If we resort for a criterion to the different principles on which different forms of government are established, we may define a republic to be, or at least may bestow that name on, a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure for a limited period, or during good behavior."

"We have gone to the capitals of our states and to the capitals of our government.  We have talked to all the power brokers.  The only power broker, the only seat of government that can and will solve this problem with or without us is God.  It is time to return inside the walls that surround Jerusalem and stand with people of all faiths, all around the world," Glenn said in his initial announcement.

The Dreyfuss Initiative: An Evening With Richard Dreyfuss

ncc The Dreyfuss Initiative: An Evening With Richard Dreyfuss

Wednesday, June 8, 2011 7-9 PM at The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia

A FREE EXCLUSIVE  ONE-NIGHT ONLY EVENT FOR LISTENERS OF THE NEW TALK RADIO 1210, WPHT

Academy Award winning actor Richard Dreyfuss is best known for starring in film, television, and theater roles since the late 1960s, including the films American Graffiti, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Goodbye Girl, Stakeout, Always, What About Bob? and Mr. Holland's Opus.  He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1977 for The Goodbye Girl, and was nominated in 1995 for Mr. Holland's Opus.

Now,  Richard Dreyfuss is taking on a new role. The Oscar-winning actor is Founder and President of The Dreyfuss Initiative, which calls for a cross-curricular study of civics in our public schools that incorporates...

- HISTORY      - LOGIC      - REASON      - CRITICAL THINKING

The Dreyfuss Initiative, a nonprofitorganization committed to revitalizing America's civic culture.   Richard also serves on the American Bar Association's Education Committee, the Board of the National Constitution Center, and was Senior Research Advisory Member of St. Antony's College, Oxford University.

THIS WILL BE AN ENTERTAINING EVENING FOR PARENTS, FOR STUDENTS, FOR EVERYONE!

Richard will share why he believes that too many of us don't realize the power we hold in a democracy. The solution, he says, is to change the way students learn about civics, the study of the rights and duties of citizenship.  Learn why we need a national standard that calls for teaching reason, logic and critical thinking skills before teaching government as a way of providing perspective and context in civics classes.

ARE AMERICAN STUDENTS PREPARED TO INHERIT THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR GREAT NATION?

Richard Dreyfuss joins 1210s Dom Giordano for this unique 2-hour LIVE event and will lay out the critically important issues, and discuss why he believes we must be preparing our nation's next generation to be effective and engaged citizens.

The event is free.  Seating is limited.  You must register to attend.

Michael J. Totten

Why Lebanon Matters

As revolutions and uprisings overtake the Middle East-with Western forces in Libya, Basher Assad crushing Syrian rebels, and Egypt under tension-does little Lebanon matter?

Very much so, argues Michael J. Totten, a foreign correspondent noted for his behind-the scenes conversations with many key players in the region-including Hezbollah.

His new and insightful book, The Road to Fatima Gate, offers Totten's first hand experiences of the 2005 Cedar Revolution, the devastating 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, and the latter's progressive assault on Lebanon's elected government.

A noted journalist-his work has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Jerusalem Post and many other publications-Totten will offer a sobering assessment of Lebanon and its overlooked significance in Middle East politics.

Dear Patriots,

Some of you know a few groups from around PA went to Harrisburg two weeks ago and met with some of our State Representatives.  One of the issues we heard is that they hear from the left and not enough from the conservative movement.  Please take time to call your state reps regarding the issues below.  They are voting on these this week, so we need everyone to make phone calls on Monday.

We need everyone to make 2 phone calls Monday, May 23rd, on 2 important votes this week. First to House Majority Leader Mike Turzi (717-772-9943)and second to your own State Representative. We need to support the representatives in Harrisburg and let them know we are paying attention to these important issues!!!

Representative William Adolf (R-Delaware) says the budget bill, HB 1485, will be scheduled for vote the week of May 23rd in the House. We are encouraging everyone in our organizations to call their state representatives and the House Majority leader and tell them to pass Corbett's budget of 27.3 billion and reject any amendments that would increase spending.

Representative Daryl Metcalfe's HB 934: the Pennsylvania Voter Identification Protection Act has been advanced by the House State Government Committee to the House floor for consideration.  This bill would amend the state election code to require all voters to present valid photo ID before voting.  This bill will prevent voter fraud such as: impersonation at the polls; fictitious registrations; double-voting; and voting by illegal aliens.  Take note this bill is scheduled to be voted on Tuesday, May 24th.

URGE YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TO COSPONSOR H.R. 822, THE NATIONAL RIGHT-TO-CARRY RECIPROCITY ACT OF 2011 Congressmen Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) have introduced vital legislation that will enable millions of permit holders to exercise their right to self-defense while traveling outside their home states

RedState Morning Briefing

For May 24, 2011

1. It's A Judgment Issue, But I'm Not Personally Offended

There is a story out this morning that Sarah Palin's top aide Rebecca Mansour sent out a series of nasty direct messages on Twitter about Sarah Palin's daughter, Mitt Romney supporters, others, and me.

The Daily Caller has the details.

Regarding me, Jonathan Strong reported:

"RedState.com founder and CNN contributor Erick Erickson is "a total d*****bag," wrote Palin speechwriter and domestic policy adviser Rebecca Mansour in a May 22, 2010, message. 'Greasy dumb a** with a talent for self-promotion. He threw himself in at the Gov's SC rally. Self-promotion.'"

As I told Tucker Carlson and Jonathan Strong and as they documented in their story, then candidate Nikki Haley and her campaign manager Tim Pearson emailed me prior to the public release of the endorsement to tell me about it and invite me to be on stage and introduce Governor Haley to the crowd.

Now, as a matter of fact, that Rebecca Mansour would send these to a person she apparently only met on Twitter reflects poor judgment, but as I pointed out to Tucker and Jonathan, her note about me was sent on May 22, 2010.

I'm sure Rebecca did not know that Governor Haley had personally invited me to be on stage. Likewise, this was at a time when everybody and their uncle was trying to take credit for anything and everything Sarah Palin had done and were also trying to stand in the limelight with her.

If anything, I think Rebecca's reaction to me is completely understandable given what was happening with Team Palin at the time. I'd have probably thought the same thing.

There is one other issue though worth exploring.

2. "It's a Weak Field". No, It Is Pretty Typical.

A lot of people are taking some comfort in my post from this morning. But there is also a lot of "the field is weak" comments.

Let's review, shall we? Let's go back to 1964, which was arguably the first year of the modern campaign era. Then we'll work our way forward with those open years or years when the GOP was the out of power party.

3. Tim Pawlenty comes out against farm subsidies. In Iowa.

In his official speech kicking off his campaign.

As I have been reminded privately, in 2008 John McCain likewise came out against ethanol... and paid the price for it in Iowa and Indiana. And it might make Pawlenty pay the same price in 2012; but the truth is, we really can't afford ethanol subsidies anymore. Either economically, or - increasingly - in terms of world security. So the sooner we have more candidates feeling comfortable in telling early primary states that their particular sacred cows aren't actually all that sacred, the better off we're all going to be.

ADL and NJDC: Obama's Anti-Israel Garbage Doesn't Stink

Abraham Foxman, Democratic Party Judas Goat, puts Obama's Re-election Above ADL's Mission
National Jewish Democratic Council (National Judenrat Democratic Kapos) Join in Whitewash
by Bill Levinson

A Judas goat is a tame animal whose function is to lead other herd animals into a meat packing factory to be "processed." A Judas goat has no choice but ADL's Abraham Foxman and the NJDC's David A. Harris and Marc R. Stanley are in contrast shameless political prostitutes who place the well-being of the Democratic Party above that of the United States, its allies, and even the Jews they claim to represent. We have four words for you, Harris, Stanley, and Foxman: NOT IN OUR NAME.

Abraham Foxman had this to say about Barack Obama's statement that Israel should return to its indefensible pre-1967 borders:

"I don't see this as the president throwing Israel under the bus," he told me. "He's saying with `swaps.' It's not 1967...

Cain shows his ignorance and Wallace shows his bias

Herman Cain Agrees In Principle to Palestinian Right of Return

Cain, clearly not knowing what Chris was talking about, said sure why not with the caveat that it would be negotiable and up to Israel.

Wallace: Where do you stand on the right of return?

Cain: The right of return? The right of return?

Wallace: The Palestinian right of return

Cain: That should be negotiated.

Wallace: You think the Palistinian refugees kicked out in 1948 should have any right to return to Israeli land?

Cain: Yes, they should have the right to come back if that is a decision that Israel wants to make.

Does Saudi Arabia want to partner with Israel?

By Ted Belman

DEBKA reported (just below)

Saudi King Abdullah has already swept the half a dozen GCC (Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Gulf) behind the separate security and strategic policies he is pursuing independently of the US and often diametrically opposed to Obama's course. He has invited Jordan, Morocco and Yemen to join the group.

The suggestion put by Jordanian monarch Abdullah II to Obama this week that the US transfer its sponsorship of the Israel-Palestinian issue to the GCC underscored the rising power of the new Gulf grouping and was firmly rejected.

This is amazing. Nobody trusts Obama and they all fear Iran. The only reason for the GCC to take over the peace process is so that they can give Israel a better deal with a view to including israel in the GCC. Afterall they have lost Egypt who is supporting the Brotherhood and Hamas. Abbas joined a Unity deal with Hamas. Perhaps, Saudi Arabia is ready to throw the Palestinians under the bus.

Netanyahu is one of 12 Mid East leaders saying no to Obama

By rejecting US President Barack Obama's proposal for Israel and its troops to pull back from the West Bank to behind the indefensible 1967 lines, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu lands in the company of eleven Middle East and North African rulers who spurned Washington's Middle East policy in the six months of the unfolding Arab uprising. Egypt's Hosni Mubarak was the only one to keep faith with Obama and he was pushed out for his pains.

Barack Obama's presentation of his Middle East vision Thursday, May 19 had three immediate results:

1. Every surviving regional leader was confirmed in his determination to keep his distance from US administration policies;

2. Another nail was driven in the coffin of the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process;

3. The fuel that was poured on regional tensions increased the prospects of an Israel-Palestinian or an Israeli-Arab war this year.

ZOA: More Thoughts On President Obama's Speech

THIS IS GREAT. EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS.

Morton A. Klein, ZOA

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), the oldest pro-Israel organization in the United States, yesterday strongly condemned President Obama's Mideast speech promoting and supporting the establishment of a Hamas/Fatah/Iran terrorist state on the indefensible 1949 armistice lines (often inaccurately described as the 1967 borders). The ZOA believes that President's Obama's call for the establishment of such a Palestinian state under existing conditions and particularly in light of the Fatah/Hamas unity government agreement, utterly compromises his stated commitment to Israel's security and points to either extreme hostility to Israel or naivety about the Palestinians.

Furthering reflecting on this deeply flawed speech, the ZOA has pointed out that President Obama's speech represents a negation of UN Security Council Resolution 242, passed in the aftermath of the 1967 Six Day War, which called for Israeli...

Canada won't back Obama's Mideast peace proposal

The Harper government is refusing to join the United States in calling for a return to 1967 borders as a starting point for Mideast peace, a position that has drawn sharp criticism from Canada's staunch ally Israel.

At a briefing ahead of the upcoming G8 summit in France, federal officials said the basis for the negotiations must be mutually agreed upon.

"What the government of Canada supports is basically a two-state solution that is negotiated," a senior federal official said. "If it's border, if it's others issues, it has to be negotiated, it cannot be unilateral action."

Pressed by reporters, federal officials said both the Israelis and the Palestinians have to decide on their bottom lines, which the Israelis have said will not include a return to the 1967 border.

"If the two parties are of the view that this is a starting point, that is fine for them," said the federal official, who spoke on the condition of...

Obama's Israel rhetoric changes, but what happens in a second term?

By Jennifer Rubin, WAPo

By all accounts President Obama in his speech today and at AIPAC on Sunday will have positive things to say about the U.S.-Israeli relationship, reiterate the importance of the alliance and refrain from language likely to alarm pro-Israel voters. But there is good reason for voters to be suspicious.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Jewish donors and fund-raisers are warning the Obama re-election campaign that the president is at risk of losing financial support because of concerns about his handling of Israel.

The complaints began early in President Barack Obama's term, centered on a perception that Mr. Obama has been too tough on Israel.

Some Jewish donors say Mr. Obama has pushed Israeli leaders too hard to halt construction of housing settlements in disputed territory, a longstanding element of U.S. policy. Some also worry that Mr. Obama is putting more pressure on the Israelis than the Palestinians to enter peace negotiations, and say they...

The Muslims Are Coming!!, The Muslims Are Coming!! -- PBS in Tandem with the State Department Smears Shelbyville to Advance Al Hijra (Muslim Immigration)

By Pamela Geller

For years I have been writing about the refugee resettlement program here: Refugee Resettlement: The quiet Jihad tsunami that is wreaking havoc on "gateway cities" like Lewiston, Maine; Shelbyville, Tennessee; St. Cloud, Minnesota; Clarkston, Georgia; and Jamestown, North Dakota. (here)

More deeply disturbing is the UN decides who gets refugee status. I have recounted the subsequent sometimes violent repercussions of these "religious" communities attempting to advance Islamic supremacism by targeting gays and hurling stones at them, trying to impose Muslim prayer on the public schools, imposing sharia law on these workplaces in America (go here and here and here and here and here and here)....

Is Obamaism getting worse or is it just my imagination?

THIS IS GETTING SCARIER AND SCARIER!!

You just spent $20,000,000 to move members/supporters of Hamas, a terrorist organization, to the United States ; housing, food, transportation, the whole enchilada.

What in heavens name are our representatives doing in Washington??. Do they have a clue??

Whether you are an Obama fan, or not, EVERYONE IN THE U.S. Needs to know....

You may want to read about it...

It  wasn't mentioned on the news... Just went by on the ticker tape at the bottom of the CNN screen.

Obama funds $20M in tax payer dollars to immigrate Hamas Refugees to the USA . This is the news that did not, and will not, make the headlines.

By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure of $20.3 million in "migration assistance" to the Palestinian refugees and "conflict victims" in Gaza .

The "presidential determination" (ain't that nice?) which allows hundreds of thousands of Palestinians with ties to Hamas to resettle in the United States , was signed and appears in the Federal Register.

Few on Capitol Hill, or in the media, took note that the order provides a free ticket replete with housing, transportation and food allowances to individuals who have displayed their overwhelming support to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the parliamentary election of January 2006.

Now we learn that he is allowing thousands of Palestinian refuges to move to, and live in, the US at American taxpayer expense.

These important, and insightful, issues are being "lost" in the blinding bail-outs and "stimulation" packages.

Campaign for Working Families

Monday, May 23, 2011

To: Friends & Supporters

From: Gary L. Bauer

2012 Update

It was not the best weekend for Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. As the governor was leaving the gym after a workout Friday, he was hit in the head by a door. He was taken to the hospital and required 16 stitches on his forehead. Then Sunday morning Daniels opted out of the 2012 Republican presidential race, joining former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and real estate investor Donald Trump.

Daniels' decision shocked many in Washington and around the country. He had laid much of the groundwork for a campaign, and had received a lot of encouragement from leading figures. But in a message to supporters, he wrote, "In the end, I was able to resolve every competing consideration but one ... the interests and wishes of my family, is the most important consideration of all." In a statement released later to the Indianapolis Star, Daniels wrote, "Simply put, I find myself caught between two duties. I love my country; I love my family more."

The Obama campaign and many media pundits (who should be on Obama's campaign payroll) are thrilled that another Republican candidate has opted out of the race. Do not despair. There are candidates already running, and I expect more folks will join the campaign in the days ahead. A serious draft movement is also not out of the question.

One new candidate is former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. We were impressed with his campaign's video announcement. Pawlenty closes the two-minute video with a clever spin on Obama's change theme, saying, "Together we'll change our country. And this time, it'll be for the better." Pawlenty made his formal announcement speech in Iowa today, hitting Obama hard with sharp contrasts and promising "...to take a different approach. I am going to tell you the truth."

Don't read too much into this item -- I'm not yet endorsing any candidate. We won't hesitate to criticize or praise candidates when I feel they deserve it. I believe Pawlenty's approach is exactly what is needed right now. There will be time for the candidates to distinguish themselves from one another. But ultimately we are looking for a candidate who can take on Barack Obama. In that regard, Tim Pawlenty is starting off well.

Hamas Responds

While the American media have been berating Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for being an obstacle to peace in the Middle East, they have ignored comments from Israel's so-called "peace partner" -- the Hamas-led "unity government" that now runs the Palestinian National Authority.

In response to calls for the Palestinians to recognize Israel's right to exist and to guarantee her safety, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said, "The American government has failed in the past, and will continue to fail in its attempt to convince Hamas to recognize the Israeli occupation." In addition, Hamas co-founder Mahmoud al-Zahar said, "[Obama] refers to the 1967 borders as sacred, but who says we accept them, and that we won't speak of the '48 lines?"

It is clear from these comments that Israelis do not have a "peace partner." They cannot negotiate with terrorists who are not interested in peace with Israel or even a piece of Israel. They want to "liberate" all of Israel from the "Zionist enemy." But don't take my word for it. Consider this statement from Yunis al-Astal, a Hamas lawmaker, promising a second Holocaust during a May 11th interview:

"The [Jews] are brought to droves to Palestine so that the Palestinians ... will have the honor of annihilating the evil of this gang. ...In just a few years all the Zionists and settlers will realize that their arrival in Palestine was for the purpose of the great massacre, but means of which Allah wants to relieve humanity of their evil."

The focus of this debate should not be on Israel's borders, but instead on why the Obama Administration refuses to obey the law. For obvious reasons, current law prohibits sending U.S. foreign aid to the Palestinian National Authority if the terrorist group Hamas is part of that government. Members of Congress and the media should demand that Obama stop sending your tax dollars to terrorists.

Encouraging News

The latest Gallup poll on abortion finds that Americans remain closely divided when asked to choose between the pro-choice and pro-life labels. Forty-nine percent of Americans identify as pro-choice, while 45% consider themselves pro-life. But when Gallup probes further, it becomes clear that the pro-life position has much stronger support.

For example, only 39% of Americans consider abortion "morally acceptable." And when asked if abortion should be legal in any or most circumstances or more limited, Gallup finds that "Americans are rather conservative in their stance on abortion, with 61% now preferring that abortion be legal in only a few circumstances or no circumstances." Just 37% feel abortion should be "legal in all or most circumstances."

While America's liberal abortion laws have a long way to go to catch up with public opinion, this poll exposes the lie that the pro-life cause is a losing issue. Men and women who believe that all of our children are endowed by our Creator with an inalienable right to life should be encouraged to continue to fight the good fight.

Nature's Fury

The pictures out of Joplin, Missouri, are heartbreaking. Scores of lives have been lost, and the community is struggling to clean up the wreckage. Meanwhile, folks along the Mississippi River are reeling from massive flooding. And we have not forgotten those in Alabama who are still trying to put their lives back together after last month's devastating tornadoes.

As you go about your daily routine, please take a moment to pray for those whose lives have been tragically affected by nature's fury. If you would like to do more, please consider supporting Samaritan's Purse or relief agencies supported by your local church or synagogue.

Tennessee House and Senate Pass

Anti-Terrorism Material Support Law!

We have a great update to share with you! Over the weekend, the Material Support to Designated Entities Act of 2011 passed in both the House (76 to 16) and the Senate (26 to 3) in Tennessee. It now sits on the Governor's desk for his signature.

This bill has been the epicenter of a tremendous debate over the last couple of months in Tennessee.
In fact, we sent out 2 emails last week detailing the unfair media treatment surrounding this bill and an associated groundbreaking new documentary video. Click here to view it in case you missed it.

Our side overcame major opposition to the bill, especially in the form of unprofessional "journalism" on the part of the Tennessean newspaper.
There was only tepid acknowledgement that the bill passed both Houses of the Legislature over the weekend from the Tennessean. If the reverse had been true, had the bill been defeated, the local paper would have likely given the story top center coverage.

In essence, the "Material Support to Designated Entities Act of 2011":

  • Now makes the provision of "material support" for terrorism a Class A felony and helps to close the prevention gap left by a related anti-terrorism statute that was unanimously passed in 2002.
  • Addresses the fact that since 9-11, more than 180 Americans have been charged under anti-terrorism statutes in bomb plots and for providing material support to terrorist groups.
  • Gives state and local law enforcement the ability to prosecute unfolding terror plots BEFORE they occur rather than picking up the pieces after a tragedy.
  • Prohibits using religious doctrine to justify the commission of an act of terrorism or the provision of material support.

Click Here to read the bill language.

This development represents one more significant step towards protecting the nation. Thank you for your support of our efforts! We await the Governor's signature!

This news video hosted by Fareed Zakaria of CNN unwittingly charts the path to poverty and instability laid out by the "Arab Spring" revolutions, with Egypt given as the example case.  In the wake of anti-Western sentiment that rejects modern concepts of finance in favor of Islamic ones, policies that could stimulate Egypt's economy are ignored, causing foreign investment in Egypt and the economy to grind to a halt.  Most profoundly, Zakaria presents a map of the region that shows how one time oil-exporting nations, whose small reserves have recently converted them into oil importers, are revolutionizing, while the few remaining oil-rich monarchies spend their wealth to buy peace.

The effect is a vicious cycle regarding oil prices, where the oil rich nations want to keep oil prices high, so they can buy off their restive subjects, while the nations whose oil has run out are driven further into poverty and chaos by those same high prices.  Meanwhile, the continuing depletion of resources and interruptions of supply due to revolution push oil prices ever higher.

Guess how this story's going to end as Middle Eastern oil resources continue to deplete.  My bet is that we're about to witness a return to the natural state of Islamic polity, as seen in Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc.

Just Who Is In The Running To Be Egypt's Next Pharaoh?

With Egypt's September elections not far off, its people are wondering who their next President will be?  Will he be the Arab world's version of George Washington or will he be an Egyptian version of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini?   The latter man who was known for saying things, "Those who are trying to bring corruption and destruction to our country in the name of democracy will be oppressed."  A brief analysis of who have actually declared they are opting for the throne of Pharaoh will answer the question.

There are only two men who have made public that they will be running for President of Egypt.  Those men are Mohamed ElBaradei ,the former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Amr Moussa, who will shortly be stepping down as the Secretary General of the Arab League.

The mainstream media has tried to paint these figures as heroes and peacekeepers.  And unless you are seeing things through Khomeini's "Israel must be wiped off the map" lens, you will come to find that they are anything but heroes.

"Observe good faith and justice towards all Nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all." --George Washington

Re: The Left

Netanyahu and Obama

"[O]n one issue Obama took the old State Department line. 'The status quo' between Israel and the Palestinians, he said, 'is unsustainable.' The United States needs to pressure Israel into making concessions. He emphasized this issue even though it's obvious that it's not a priority or even of much interest to the 'Arab Spring protestors.' And even though, as he mentioned in his speech, the merger of Fatah and Hamas means that Israel does not have a negotiating partner willing to recognize its right to exist. He continued to press his demand, made by no previous president, that Israel stop all 'settlements,' even in Jerusalem. Of course, he failed to note that that demand derailed any possible negotiations, since no Israeli leader will ever agree and since, once Obama made it, Palestinian leaders had to insist on it, too. And he asserted -- also a first for an American president -- that an agreement 'should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.' Previous presidents have said that adjustments should recognize changes that have occurred in the last 44 years. Obama did not, and he added that all Israeli troops should be withdrawn from Palestinian territory, undercutting any Israeli demand to leave a defensive force along the Jordan River. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, sitting next to Obama in the Oval Office after their meeting Friday, said flatly that the 1967 (actually 1949-67) lines were unacceptable and that asking Israel to negotiate with Hamas is like asking the United States to negotiate with al-Qaida. Obama deserves credit for going to the State Department to renounce State Department policy on the Middle East. Unfortunately, he didn't follow through on that on Israel and the Palestinians." --political analyst Michael Barone

 Faith and Family

"What's missing in all the talk about the 'Arab Spring' and 'democracy' is any examination of what democracy means and whether it necessarily makes things better. ... Authoritarian regimes or strong democracies enforcing the rule of law, can offer these minorities some protection against the anger of the mob. Remove all authority, however, and the result is often violence. That's what Middle Eastern Christians are afraid of. Their fears aren't helped by the fact that most westerners don't seem to understand that it takes more than elections to create a good or democratic government. ... The institutions we take for granted in the West, the ones that help safeguard the rights of minorities, are rare and they are next-to-non-existent in places like Syria and Egypt. Without them, you get democratic tyranny, mob rule by the majority. This is why Christians, who believe that man is a fallen creature, have always supported democracy underpinned by checks and balances and the rule of law. That's why we call it a 'Republican form of government.' And that is why we must be wary of what some people call 'democracy,' particularly for its effect on religious minorities." --commentator Chuck Colson

Opinion in Brief

"Nearly two weeks ago, Fatah, the U.S.-backed Palestinian National Liberation Movement, signed an agreement to form a unity government with Hamas, a U.S.-listed foreign terror organization. ... Hamas's own foreign minister has stated that Hamas 'believe[s] that negotiations with the Israeli enemy are in vain.' The Hamas Charter calls for Islam to 'abolish' Israel and for Muslims to 'fight the Jews and kill them.' It further proclaims, 'There is no solution to the Palestinian problem except jihad.' ... Where would U.S. dollars go in this new unity government? Hamas isn't hiding their intentions for these funds. In touting the new unity government, Hamas foreign minister Mahmoud al-Zahhar announced, 'We believe in armed struggle, in addition to responsible governing, as well as making the government's resources available to the resistance,' i.e. terrorism. ... Israel has already cut off tax funds that it routinely collects for the Palestinian Authority. The United States should follow this example, suspend all funds to the Palestinians until Fatah withdraws from the agreement, and make it clear that if the agreement is honored, there will be no more U.S. dollars for the Palestinian Authority. The fact that we even have to debate this question is absurd." --Jordan Sekulow, Director of policy and international operation for American Center for Law and Justice

Government

"We can get spending under control, balance the budget, and shrink our debt. We can limit the size of government and set free once again the unlimited genius of Americans to create wealth and jobs. We can turn the tide and change our nation's course. To get our fiscal house in order, we must address Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, the three so-called entitlement programs which together account for 43 percent of federal spending today. ... We also need to encourage Americans to become more fiscally responsible themselves. We can do this by redesigning our tax system into an expenditure tax with a single flat rate. ... We have to substantially reduce the size and scope of the federal government, fundamentally increase the role of the states in choosing their own practices, and bring decision-making closer to the people, not to unelected administrators. These steps are crucial to getting our nation on a path of fiscal, political and constitutional responsibility." --Heritage Foundation president Edwin J. Feulner

For the Record

"In case you weren't paying attention (and too few are) the United States officially reached the debt ceiling [last] Monday. Treasury Secretary Tim ('I forgot to pay my taxes') Geithner informed Congress of difficult decisions he was forced to make to keep the country solvent, which is a joke. ... Among Geithner's sleights of hand to keep America from 'defaulting' on its loans is his suspension of payments to federal retirement funding investments until Aug. 2. Whoa, there's a brave move! Geithner doesn't suggest spending cutbacks. That's because with Democrats, especially, federal spending is considered more sacred than money dropped in a church offering plate. Once it's in, it would be a sacrilege to take it out. The public -- or at least the half of us who pay our tax bills so that the other half can take it and so politicians can keep themselves in office -- ought to be awake to this scam. It makes convicted Ponzi scheme practitioner Bernie Madoff look like a piker." --columnist Cal Thomas

Liberty

"On May 13, the Obama administration announced the approval of 204 new waivers from compliance with the PPAA (Obamacare). That brings to 1,372 the number of waivers HHS has granted in the 14 months since the law's passage. ... The world of Obamacare is no place for the little guy. The danger of waiver power is that it will be used differentially, giving one private entity a competitive advantage over another. The company denied a waiver can bring suit -- but litigation is expensive and slow. ... Because there are so few avenues of recourse when we live under a government by waiver, we are forced, as [Professor Richard] Epstein warns, to trust in the good judgment of bureaucrats and elected officials: 'The fate of our rights and liberties is left to the wisdom and discretion of individuals; we are therefore governed by men, not by laws.'" --columnist Mona Charen

The Gipper

"There are many well-meaning people today who work at placing an economic floor beneath all of us so that no one shall exist below a certain level or standard of living, and certainly we don't quarrel with this. But look more closely and you may find that all too often these well-meaning people are building a ceiling above which no one shall be permitted to climb and between the two are pressing us all into conformity, into a mold of standardized mediocrity." --Ronald Reagan

Political Futures

"Even when the president offered some sensible proposals about illegal aliens paying fines, applying formally for citizenship and learning English, he was still disingenuous. Obama deliberately floated these proposals to his partisan audience without any details of enforcement, since to do so would likely turn off the cheering crowd. ... The enforcement of existing federal immigration law has become a joke. Drug violence in Mexico is destabilizing an entire country and spilling over the border. Jobs are scarce, with unemployment here still at 9 percent. Many billions of dollars in remittances to Mexico leave the American Southwest, often from illegal aliens who rely on American social services to make up the difference. These are serious issues that deserve more from a president than re-election pandering at the border and bad jokes about alligators and moats." --historian Victor Davis Hanson

Culture

"All of our ruling-class institutions -- academia, courts, government, media and entertainment industries -- are teeming with closed-minded, hard-Left ideologues who seek to 'fundamentally transform America.' Consider that, according to the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, self-identified liberals outweigh their conservative counterparts in the mainstream media by a 5-1 margin. Likewise, a 1999 North American Academic Study Survey (NAASS) of students, faculty and administrators in colleges and universities throughout the United States determined that five times as many college faculty members vote Democratic as Republican. ... Still, liberals -- or 'progressives,' as they prefer to be called -- persist in laboring under an embarrassing misconception: They honestly believe they remain the nonconformists. It's precious. In fact, today's liberals are nothing of the sort. They compliantly conform -- like little windup, patchouli-daubed lemmings -- to a carnival-prize caricature of what they imagine nonconformity to look like. You know, the usual stuff: neo-Marxism, environmentalist activism, sexual relativism, big-government nanny statism, an actions-without-consequences rendering of reproductive rights, and other such populist nonsense. Simply put, today's progressive nonconformist conforms." --columnist J. Matt Barber

Insight

"For what is meant by saying that a government ought to educate the people? Why should they be educated? What is the education for? Clearly, to fit the people for social life -- to make them good citizens. And who is to say what are good citizens? The government: there is no other judge. And who is to say how these good citizens may be made? The government: there is no other judge. Hence the proposition is convertible into this -- a government ought to mold children into good citizens, using its own discretion in settling what a good citizen is and how the child may be molded into one." --British author, economist and philosopher Herbert Spencer (1820-1903)

Reader Comments

"As the mother of 8 and a teacher, I almost cried reading Mark Alexander's article on 'education.' It's all true, Mark, every single sentence you wrote. I now only substitute because I'm not trusted to teach the doctrine of the state. They kill a love of learning and then replace it with indoctrination and too many parents don't seem to notice or care. God help us. Keep preachin' it Mark, some are listening and waking up." --Barbara

"Thank you, Mr. Alexander, for recognizing those of us in academia who are still holding on and fighting the 'good fight.' We are few, but an important, vocal touch-point against 'run-away' government education. It's refreshing to be acknowledged in an environment where we are usually lumped in with the leftist-socialist-communists (take your pick). Thanks, again." --Matthew

"Re: Friday's Digest, if Newt is the best that the GOP has to offer, then like 2008, I will have nobody to vote for in 2012. They better find someone quick, because I hate throwing my vote away by voting for Mickey Mouse." --Harold

"Newt Gingrich can perform the most important political of his formerly distinguished career by withdrawing his name from seeking the presidency now. His withdrawal will free up his current supporters to put their efforts and their money behind a more viable candidate. It is my opinion that he is trying to firmly establish himself as a middle of the road candidate. We have had too many of those of late." --Rodney

"The CDC has pages of information on how to prepare for zombie infestation and other disasters, but neglects to mention the absolute necessity of rifles, shotguns, pistols and sufficient ammunition. Something very wrong there." --Michael

The Last Word

"A day after he announced it, Willie Nelson has withdrawn his presidential endorsement of the monotonous libertarian extremist Gary Johnson, RawStory.com reports (apparently quoting Nelson's email verbatim): 'Yesterday, both the Teapot Party and Gary Johnson 2012 sent out press releases announcing the endorsement,' wrote Teapot Party member Steve Bloom Thursday.... 'My position is it too early for me to endorse anyone,' he wrote in an email to Bloom. 'And I think every one should vote their own conscience.' Willie went on: 'I think I will wait and see where he stands on other things. My bad. Sorry. I still think he is a good guy but so Is Dennis [Kucinich] and if he decided to run I would personally vote for him. If it came down to either him or Gary I'm already committed to Dennis. They both have said they support legal pot.' We're glad he cleared that up. But wait. What if it's Newt Gingrich vs. Russ Feingold -- how does Willie vote then? An anxious world holds its breath. An anxious world exhales. An anxious world suddenly feels more mellow. A mellow world scarfs down an entire bag of Doritos. Dude, what was this item about again?" --Wall Street Journal columnist James TarantoSemper Vigilo, Fortis, Paratus et Fidelis!

After bin Laden

Days after the death of Osama bin Laden, two men were arrested in New York City as they attempted to purchase a hand grenade, guns and ammunition for an attack on a Manhattan synagogue while disguised as Orthodox Jews. It was one of at least 39 terrorist plots against the United States that have been foiled since 9/11. And though the attack was averted and bin Laden is lying dead in a watery grave, the terrorism threat remains, and much must be done to continue ensuring America's defense in a post-bin Laden world.

Metcalfe Legislation to Combat Voter Fraud with Valid Photo ID Green-Lighted for House Consideration

Sponsored by House State Government Committee Majority Chairman, State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler), the Pennsylvania Voter Identification Protection Act (House Bill 934) was advanced today by the Committee to the House floor for consideration.

"Countless American patriots have and continue to put their lives on the line around the world to preserve our freedoms, including the freedom to privately and confidentially cast a vote at the ballot box," Metcalfe said.  "Final passage of the Pennsylvania Voter Identification Protection Act will further uphold one of the most fundamental rights of American citizenship."

Modeled after Indiana's photo identification law, which was upheld as Constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2008, Metcalfe's legislation would amend the state election code to require all voters to present valid photo ID before voting.   Current Pennsylvania law requires photo ID for voters who appear to vote in an election district for the first time.

Expert testimony presented to the House State Government Committee earlier this spring confirmed that requiring valid photo ID at the polls, as provided for by House Bill 934, can prevent the four most widely documented types of voter fraud, including:   impersonation at the polls; fictitious registrations; double-voting; and voting by illegal aliens.

Information provided by the testifiers also made it clear that enacting stronger voter fraud protection legislation, such as Metcalfe's Pennsylvania Voter Identification Protection Act, does not disenfranchise, suppress or otherwise adversely impact voter participation.  In fact, in Indiana and Georgia, where showing valid photo ID at the polls is now law, voter turnout has dramatically increased.

"Passage of House Bill 934 is essential to preserving the sacred freedom of voting from the ever-present forces of corruption seeking to override the will of the people," said Metcalfe.  "Currently in Pennsylvania it is impossible to board a commercial airplane, cash a paycheck, operate a motor vehicle or even purchase season passes to a neighborhood swimming pool or amusement park without displaying a valid photo ID.   Guaranteeing the integrity of our state's election process in which all registered voters can be fully confident that only eligible voters have the privilege of casting a vote, that every vote counts equally and, most importantly, not be canceled out by fraudulent votes deserves no less than equal protection under the law."

The Patriot Act, Prime Minister of Israel, and other important events on the Senate Schedule

The Senate will reconvene at 2pm today and will be in Morning Business until 3pm.

At 3pm, the Senate will resume consideration of the motion to proceed to S.1038, the PATRIOT Act Extension bill.  Note this bill is a simple four-year extension of the three expiring provisions of the PATRIOT Act introduced by the two Leaders.  We will vote on cloture on the motion to proceed today at 5pm.

Under the rules, all post-cloture time on the motion to proceed will expire tomorrow.  If no agreement is reached with respect to amendments, tomorrow Leader Reid could file cloture on the underlying bill, S.1038, for a Thursday morning cloture vote.

A reminder: tomorrow at 11am His Excellency Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, will address a Joint Meeting of Congress.

As mentioned at the close of last week, budget votes are also possible this week.  We anticipate if we have these votes, they could occur on Wednesday.  As you know, under the rules, if Congress has not passed a budget by April 15th, then a member can move (as a matter of right) to proceed to a budget on the calendar.  The motion is privileged (non-debatable) and would be at a 51-vote threshold.   At the present time, there are four budgets on the calendar (Obama, Ryan, Toomey, and Paul).  If we were to vote on the motion to proceed to any of these budgets, we don't anticipate any would reach the needed 51 votes as the Majority Leader believes it would be "foolish" to actually debate and amend a budget (http://articles.latimes.com/2011/may/20/news/la-pn-harry-reid-budget-20110520).

We also expect to clear a House passed one-month FAA extension this week.

I've included a press release regarding the Leader's appearance on Fox News Sunday below.

And, as you know, this is the final week of this work period. The Senate will be in recess next week.

Let me know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful week.

The vanishing Mister Barack Obama

May 23, 2011 06:13 am | Coach Collins

 By Kevin "Coach" Collins

Clear eyed observers recognize Barack Obama will not have an easy road to reelection. A steady stream of poor, and outright suspicious, decisions has become the hallmark of his administration. He stands exposed him as a man overmatched by the demands of his office.  Obama's well documented failings will provide ample material for whomever the GOP nominates. Nevertheless, the worst enemy of Obama's reelection chances may be inexorably building without much notice.

The worst calamity a candidate can face is being laughed at, but the second worst is being ignored. Evidence that the voting public may be ignoring Obama is building and this portents great danger for his reelection.

Continually dropping viewership

There was a time not long ago when people stopped whatever they were doing to hear an American president's speech. This was the case at the beginning of Obama's administration. In December 2009 almost 41 million people stopped whatever they had going to watch Obama's speech ... Continue Reading:The vanishing Mister Barack Obama

One Who Understands the Second Amendment,

Right now, we are in 20 different COURTROOM LAWSUITS to win YOUR Firearms' Freedom!

The Second Amendment Foundation is not just some group that wants you to appreciate your Second Amendment rights. We are actively involved in at least 20 different lawsuits in the Courts of the United States to make sure that we are winning YOUR Firearm's Freedoms, as GUARANTEED by the United States Constitution!

Within the last week, the Second Amendment Foundation has filed suit in federal court in Illinois, challenging the state's complete prohibition on the carrying of firearms in public for the purpose of self-defense.

The lawsuit alleges that Illinois statutes that completely ban the carrying of handguns for self-defense are "inconsistent with the Second Amendment." Named as defendants are Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and State Police Superintendent. Illinois is currently the only state in the country that imposes a complete prohibition on the carrying of firearms for personal protection by its citizens. The state legislature recently stopped, by a thin margin, a concealed carry measure. After the 2008 Heller ruling and last year's McDonald ruling against the city of Chicago that incorporated the Second Amendment to the states, one would think that Illinois lawmakers would act quickly to comply with court decisions and the constitution.

Illinois is the only state in the country that completely prohibits its citizens from carrying guns for self-defense.

The Second Amendment Foundation is involved in this historic fight for Constitutional rights. But there are also 20 additional lawsuits that SAF is involved in---simply to protect your pro-gun rights.

Between $60,000 and $80,000 are spent EVERY MONTH for SAF lawsuits!

The anti-gun Obama administration continues to "stack the deck" against us as they appoint anti-gun judges, etc. We must stop this anti-gun administration!

Please CLICK HERE to GIVE a generous DONATION to the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) as we attack this anti-gun onslaught RIGHT NOW! We are on the literal frontlines of the fight for gun-owner rights. Your DONATION will assist us in our 20 legal battles that we have, right now, in the United States courts. YOUR legal gun right will be protected, if, by no one else, but the Second Amendment Foundation!

In another one of our 20 lawsuits, the Second Amendment Foundation filed suit just last Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Virginia challenging the constitutionality of federal and Virginia provisions barring handgun sales to non-residents.

SAF is joined in the lawsuit by Michelle Lane, a District of Columbia resident who cannot legally purchase handguns because there are no retail firearms dealers inside the District. The Supreme Court's 2008 Heller ruling struck down the District's handgun ban, confirming that individuals have a constitutional right to possess handguns.

SAF and Lane are represented by attorney Alan Gura of Gura & Possessky, PLLC, who won both the Heller ruling and last year's Supreme Court victory in McDonald v. City of Chicago. Named as defendants are Attorney General Eric Holder and W. Steven Flaherty, superintendent of the Virginia State Police.

Here are some of the key lawsuits that we are currently engaged in:

    • SAF v. Illinois

    • SAF v. Eric Holder (Ban on Interstate handgun sales in VA)

    • SAF v. Massachusetts (Civil Action # 11-CV-10644)

    • SAF v. Mayor Bloomberg (New York City (CV 2356)

    • SAF v. NY Officials in reference to a "permit to carry."

    • SAF v. Eric Holder, FBI - Misdemeanor Gun Rights Denial

    • SAF v. City of Chicago - over gun rights prohibition

    • SAF v. Maryland - over handgun permit denial

    • SAF v. New York (Westchester County)

    • SAF v. North Carolina (seeks to overturn "emergency powers" gun bans)

...AND SCORES OF OTHER LAWSUITS!

Please CLICK HERE to GIVE a generous DONATION to the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) as we attack this anti-gun onslaught RIGHT NOW! We are on the literal frontlines for gun-owner rights. Your DONATION will assist us in our 20 legal battles that we have, right now, in the United States courts. YOUR legal gun right will be protected, if, by no one else, but the Second Amendment Foundation!

In another one of our potent 20 lawsuits, the Second Amendment Foundation has also filed suit in federal court in Illinois, challenging the state's complete prohibition on the carrying of firearms in public for the purpose of self-defense.

The lawsuit alleges that Illinois statutes that completely ban the carrying of handguns for self-defense are "inconsistent with the Second Amendment." Joining SAF are two private citizens, Michael Moore of Champaign and Charles Hooks of Percy. Named as defendants are Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and State Police Superintendent Patrick Keen. SAF is represented by attorneys David Jensen and David Sigale. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois.

It is incredible that this situation has persisted even in light of the Supreme Court's rulings in Heller and McDonald, and we look forward to vindicating the rights of the people of Illinois.

The lawsuit insists this case is not an attempt to force Illinois into some regulatory scheme, but only to clarify that the state's current regulatory ban on firearms carry is impermissible under the Second Amendment.

Every other state has some kind of regulatory scenario. Even in Wisconsin, where there is no concealed carry statute, the state attorney general has recognized that open carry is legal. Only Illinois makes it statutorily impossible for average private citizens to carry firearms for self-defense.

Whether Illinois lawmakers like it or not, the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms is the law of the land. A complete prohibition simply does not pass constitutional muster. The state cannot stick its head in the sand and pretend this problem does not exist.

The Second Amendment Foundation has also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg that alleges New York City's $340 fee for a permit to keep a handgun in the home is "excessive and...impermissibly burdens the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms."

SAF is joined in the lawsuit by the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association and five individual New York City residents. Also named as a defendant in the lawsuit is New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Under state law, the maximum fee for issuing a New York State handgun license is $10, but the law exempts citizens living in New York City. That exemption allows the city to charge an exorbitant fee for the license, which discourages city residents from exercising their civil rights while violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

"For decades the City has charged its residents exorbitant license fees that far exceed the fees charged by other states and cities that impose them," said attorney David Jensen, who is representing the plaintiffs. "The effect of this is to force a punitive tax on New York City citizens who choose to own firearms in compliance with the law. But people have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and the City cannot simply impose fees for the sake of burdening law-abiding gun owners."

In its lawsuit, SAF notes that the $340 fee is not used to defray administrative costs, so there appears to be no purpose for it other than to discourage people from applying for a permit. The excessive fee puts the exercise of a constitutional right solely within the financial reach of the wealthy class, essentially turning a civil right into a privilege for the rich and well-connected.

New York is one of only two states that require a permit just to keep a handgun in one's own home. Citizens in the other 48 states would consider that an outrage. The city's 'residence premises' handgun license amounts to a charge of more than $100 annually to keep a handgun in one's home, which is ridiculous. Mayor Bloomberg is essentially taxing the fundamental right to defend one's self in his or her own home. We cannot think of anything more egregious than perpetuating a fee structure that puts a financial obstacle in the way of citizens who want to protect their homes and families.

We believe the only recourse is to take this issue to the
federal court! Billionaires like Mayor Bloomberg can be
cavalier about a citizen's rights, but we can't, and we won't.

Your DONATION will assist us in our 20 legal battles that we have, right now, in the United States courts. YOUR legal gun right will be protected, if, by no one else, but the Second Amendment Foundation!

Thank you for your continued support of the Second Amendment Foundation!

YOUR Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation's oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. SAF has previously funded successful firearms-related suits against the cities of Los Angeles; New Haven, CT; and San Francisco on behalf of American gun owners, a lawsuit against the cities suing gun makers and an amicus brief and fund for the Emerson case holding the Second Amendment as an individual right.

These lawsuits are very expensive. At a cost of between $60,000 and $80,000 a month, you can understand why we URGENTLY need your financial response.

We urgently need your donation to stay in these 20-plus important "FIREARMS' FREEDOM" lawsuits! To stay in this all-out pro-gun war, on your behalf, we need your donation TODAY!

Thank you, in advance, for your financial involvement for our 20-plus pro-gun and pro-Second Amendment Constitutional efforts.

Sincerely,

Alan M. Gottlieb
