Michael J. Totten
Why Lebanon Matters
As revolutions and uprisings overtake the Middle East-with Western forces in Libya, Basher Assad crushing Syrian rebels, and Egypt under tension-does little Lebanon matter?
Very much so, argues Michael J. Totten, a foreign correspondent noted for his behind-the scenes conversations with many key players in the region-including Hezbollah.
His new and insightful book, The Road to Fatima Gate, offers Totten's first hand experiences of the 2005 Cedar Revolution, the devastating 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, and the latter's progressive assault on Lebanon's elected government.
A noted journalist-his work has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Jerusalem Post and many other publications-Totten will offer a sobering assessment of Lebanon and its overlooked significance in Middle East politics.

RedState Morning Briefing
For May 11, 2011
1. Loyalty, Honor, and Faith. Virtues We Should Prioritize.
In the past 48 hours, I have received a lot of criticism for my takedown of Jon Huntsman. Some of it was not surprising, i.e. when you want to see the traitor Jonathan Pollard freed instead of hanged, you can't be expected to understand arguments about loyalty and honor. Some of it was surprising.
The most interesting aspect of it all is that the older the conservative or the further south the conservative lives, the more likely they are to understand and agree with my point. The Texans I know are largely uniform in agreement that the act is both dishonorable and disloyal.
Ultimately that is the point. In the past 48 hours, in addition to the incoming fire, a lot of people both inside and outside the Huntsman camp have wondered if this is all cover for some other grievance against Huntsman. Put as clearly and simply as I can - no.
I view being an American a higher thing than being a Republican or a conservative. And I view what Jon Huntsman did - openly plotting a Presidential bid against the President of the United States while serving the President of the United States in China - to be both profoundly disloyal and profoundly dishonorable.
However, the more I learn about Jon Huntsman's character, the less it surprises me.
I think we do not value honor, loyalty, and faith enough in this country and the embrace of many of Jon Huntsman and the dismissal of these concerns by many as frivolous are just added indicators in how far down the road to Gomorrah we have gone.
2. The Strategic Wisdom of Barack Obama
The killing of Osama bin Laden has been characterized by two distinct phases. In Phase I the White House simply could not tell us what happened during the raid and eventually just decided to stop talking about it. Phase II has been a demeaning and unseemly grubbling for credit on the part of the administration under the guise of Obama having made a "gutsy call." Not only has the administration actively promoted this notion in press conferences but they are actively planting these stories in the tame and housebroken media that has become a hallmark of this administration.
The latest in the series of "Obama is as hard as woodpecker lips" stories comes from the New York Times.
3. The Big Energy Lie, Revisited
Your President has been telling you things that simply aren't true. Things like "We can't drill our way out of our energy problems." Or "Oil and gas are the fuels of the past." Or, perhaps worst of all, "The U.S. consumes 25% of the world's oil, but controls only 2% of the world's reserves."
Well, that last one may be technically true, but it is used to convey the false notion that to strive for energy security is an exercise in futility. In a post called The Big Energy Lie (Dec. '09), I attempted to explain the deception. In this post, I'll attempt to demonstrate, in layman's language, using graphs based on the government's own data.
4. Brutus was Right
We have been moving steadily towards this calamity since the dawn of the Progressive Era. The object of government transitioned from defending the liberty of its people to buying votes on the promise of a more fair concept of liberty, fully funded by the Federal Government. Over time, the spending became ingrained into the culture of our government by the New Deal, the Great Society, and myriad other interest focused expenditures that fall outside of the traditional role, the intended role, of the Federal Government.
If we are to raise the Debt Ceiling, it must be combined with Sen. Lee's Balanced Budget Amendment, binding the hands of our elected representatives and restoring the object of our Government and its spending in the process.
5. The Latest Fad from the Left: Blatant Misinformation and Hoaxes
Jane Corwin is a Republican running for Congress in NY 26. Here is her website: www.janecorwin.com. Nice, clean, professional. Now take a look at this website: www.janecorwin.org. Aesthetically indistinguishable, the designers cleverly use humor to paint Jane Corwin as a clueless hack, bent on destroying the district calling her "A proven millionaire. A real homophobe. The leader we fear." There is little reason to assume that a group would go to this much trouble without having the intention of spreading misinformation.
And now, a group that some claim is the same group responsible for a New York Times spoof in 2008 predicting the end of the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan as well as a revitalized economy, and dated July 2009, has a new website attacking the coal industry.
6. Senate GOP allows judicial confirmation of ex-Planned Parenthood director
As so often seem to be the case, the GOP doesn't follow the Democratic playbook when it comes to obstruction. They caved when it came to a vote last week on the nomination of Jack McConnell as a US District Court Judge. He's only 52 or 53, so we can look forward to decades of his rulings.
Among the items on his resume are being the unpaid director of Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island and being involved in successful tobacco litigation, for which he's still due to receive $2-3M/year for another 13 years. He's been a trial lawyer for 25 years.
It's not difficult to figure out what we can expect in terms of his judicial philosophy.
7. Richard Lugar Insults Conservatives, Indiana GOP County Chairmen
Yesterday, I received an interesting piece of spam from Richard Lugar's campaign. I call it "interesting" because it indicates that Lugar apparently intends to court voters who might be contemplating a vote for Richard Mourdock by calling them morons. And then speaking to them as if they were morons.
8. 5.1.11
As many of you know, I'm a big fan of the Stoneridge Group and typically encourage candidates running for office to check them out. They do visually stunning mail and websites. They really are my favorite in the business.
To honor the SEALs and what they did on May 1, 2011, Stoneridge designed the poster seen here. If you want a print, go here. All profits will go to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

Introduction to Labor Studies' - My First-Hand Account
by Philip Christofanelli
My name is Philip Christofanelli. I was a student in the University of Missouri's "Introduction to Labor Studies" course. The class was taught simultaneously by Professor Don Giljum of University of Missouri-Saint Louis (UMSL) and Professor Judy Ancel of University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) through the use of a live video feed that linked the two classrooms. The class met every other Saturday for seven hours, including breaks. All of the classes were recorded and put on the class website.
| Class slide by Prof. Judy Ancel instructing students on how to "re-frame" messages for "State Battles" against right-to-work legislation in Missouri and elsewhere |
Since that time, an organization known as Insurgent Visuals has released videos of the class, which have gained considerable media attention. To be clear, I am not Insurgent Visuals, nor am I associated with them. I did not edit any videos or put them online. I did, however, download the original videos off of the class website and give them out in their entirety to a number of my friends in order to obtain other opinions on the propriety of what occurred in the class, and of the steps I should take moving forward.

Islamic documentary matinee inside the DOJ on May 19
Patrick Poole has been reporting extensively here at Pajamas on the Justice Department scuttling terrorist prosecutions against "Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) co-founder Omar Ahmad." Poole reported a "high-placed DOJ source told me the case was nixed to prevent embarrassment to the Obama administration and to avoid inflaming the Muslim community."
Sources at the DOJ tell me that Thursday May 19 will be Islamic movie day at the DOJ. A 1pm matinee is scheduled. Specifically, Civil Rights Division employees at the DOJ have been invited to take off work, and trek across town to the 7th floor conference center at Main Justice to view the documentary film "Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think." No word on whether the DOJ will host a sequel called "What the Other 570,000,000 Muslims Think."

US blasts Pakistani spy 'games'
America reportedly toughening response to leak of intelligence agents' names
WASHINGTON - Pakistani spy "games" are hurting relations with the United States, which is toughening its response to the second outing of an intelligence agent in five months, an official told NBC News on Tuesday. "There is reason to think this is intentional - and it is unacceptable," the official said.
U.S. officials plan to make their objections known, the official told NBC News.
"The U.S. seeks a strong relationship with the Pakistanis, but playing games doesn't help," the official said. "If they spent more time fighting militants on their own soil than framing rhetoric, criticizing the United States, that would be a welcome development."

Texas House Passes Sanctuary Cities Legislation
by Julian Aguilar
5/10/2011

President Barack Obama's commitment to providing legal status for illegal aliens is reflected in the time he has spent focusing on the country's immigration laws in recent weeks, the White House said on Monday, one day before the president is set to deliver a national address on immigration in El Paso, Texas.
El Paso is across the border from Juarez, Mexico, a city where 3,111 civilians were murdered last year--more than in all of Afghanistan.
In recent weeks, Obama has met with current and former elected officials, business leaders and Hollywood celebrities - all of whom agree with his position on the matter - to promote comprehensive immigration reform.
Proponents call the proposal a "pathway to citizenship" for the roughly 12 million illegal aliens in the country, but critics call it "amnesty".... |

Mexico Sues U.S. Gun Manufacturers Over Obama Program By Doug Brook, FloydReports.com
Not content to pack off millions of miscreants, impoverished, or labor-averse citizens to the welcoming, welfare-bestowing arms of the United States government, Mexican President Felipe Calderon has decided to hold Americans responsible for his nation's crime rate, as well. On November 2, 2010, Calderon retained the New York law firm of Reid, Collins, and Tsai to sue American gun manufacturers and dealers for the reputed massive influx of weapons into the otherwise zephyr-swept Shangri-La of Mexico.... |

"Natural Born" Does Not Equal "Loyal Citizen" By Carlos Calwianka, FloydReports.com
Obama finally produced his "long form birth certificate," and Ann Coulter crowed she was right all along about the birth certificate, but she really proved herself a crack shot when she said the birther controversy distracts from what a terrible presidency the Obama administration is. Quite well said, but did his parents have the qualifications to confer on Barack Obama Jr. undivided loyalty to his nation of birth? You know a tree by its fruit, and you know the loyalty of a president to his nation by his leadership.
Nowhere is this more evident than in current White House energy policy. Recently, the president recounted speaking to OPEC about opening its oil spigots: "We are in a lot of conversations with the major oil producers like Saudi Arabia to let them know that it's not going to be good for them if our economy is hobbled because of high oil prices."
This is all pretty strange when you consider what Obama's prime offshore oil drilling official, Michael Bromwich - who heads the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement - stated last week.... |

Action Alert: Obama Moves To Tax Cars By The Mile Time to stop it is now - before it happens
Sledgehammer Action Alert
From the American Policy Center
Tom DeWeese - President70 Main Street, Suite 23 Warrenton, VA 20186 americanpolicy.org
Getting us out of our cars is a major goal of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development. How do they do that - make it impossible to own or drive a car.
$5 per gallon of gas is one good way to stop your driving.
Taxing every mile you drive is another.
The Obama Administration is already well on its way to the $5 per gallon mark, pretending that forcing alternative energy policy is some kind of an answer to high gas prices. It's not.
But now, the Administration is quietly organizing plans to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.
Of course the Obama crowd denies any such thing. Classic.
The plan is part of Obama's "Transportation Opportunities Act." Don't you love the 1984 newspeak title?
The plan that is being considered and developed is this:
- Create a new federal bureaucracy inside the Federal Highway Administration called the "Surface Transportation Revenue Alternatives Office, with a budget of $300 million - to start.
- The office would then be assigned the task to "study framework that defines the functionality of a mileage based user fee system and other systems."
- Install electronic equipment on every car to determine how many miles are driven.
- Create a "Vehicle Miles Traveled" Tax (VMT).
The push to tax mileage is part of the over-all Sustainable Development agenda to raise the cost of energy to force us to "conserve." There are now moves to put a tax on the use of toilet paper and plastic bags.
Sustainable Development is part of an international agenda to force us to sacrifice and transform American society through a top-down centrally-controlled economy - in short - Socialism.
During the presidential campaign in 2008, Obama told us that international policy would be his driving policy force when he said "We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times...and then just expect that other countries re going to say OK...That's not leadership. That's not going to happen."
Of course, NOW the Obama Administration denies the whole thing. His spokesmen say the mileage tax is just a "study framework." But the Senate Budget Committee, chaired by Senator Kent Conrad (D.N.D.) issued a report suggesting the mileage tax as a way to generate more revenue.
After that report was released, the Obama Administration issued the Transportation Opportunities Act. Section 2218 of that bill includes the mileage tax idea.
Obama's people say it's just an "idea" being considered."
Remember Obama's first choice for Energy Czar, Van Jones, an avowed communist, who said, "The green economy will start off as a small subset. And we are going to push it and push it and push it...until it becomes the engine for transforming the whole society."
Well, Obama's mileage tax is a major part of that plan. Americans must know now that these "ideas" are just random air. They are plans being made ready.
THERE WILL BE A MILEAGE TAX IMPOSED ON YOU WITHIN THE NEXT TWO YEARS. COUNT ON IT.
That's why it's urgent that you and I take immediate action to kill this "idea" right now!
If you are taxed for every mile you drive will you feel as free to go where you like? Or will you be more inclined to stay home? This is an assault on your freedom.
Do you want yet another government meter on your car measuring where you go? Big Brother spying has no place in a free society.
Action to take:
1. Call the White House and tell them you are outraged by such a plan. Tell them NO on a mileage tax. We must convey that message to them right now. Let them know it will not be tolerated. Whitehouse Switchboard: 202-456-1111
2. Call your member of Congress with the same message. NO mileage tax. House switchboard: (202) 225-3121
3. Call both of your United States Senators with the same message. NO mileage tax. Senate Switchboard: (202) 224-3121
If we don't kill this idea now - in the planning stages it will become reality.
Send this message to 10 more people and urge friends and neighbors to call. They will all be affected by this outrageous tax on yet another part of our lives.
Remember! TEA Party means = Taxed Enough Already!
Thank you,

Tom DeWeese President American Policy Center tom@americanpolicy.org americanpolicy.org

In this post, I will try to describe, with careful attention to context and accuracy, what occurred in these public classrooms over the course of the semester. I believe that any reasonable person who takes the time to read this post in full will come to the same conclusion that I did: Professors Giljum and Ancel used a public university class to promote their own radical political opinions and organizations, and to train students and union members in negotiating tactics that are apparently illegal, and profoundly unethical. Their behavior was highly unprofessional and inappropriate, and the University of Missouri should simply admit that fact and take steps to ensure that classes are not taught in that way ever again.

The ACLU vs. Daryl Metcalfe
By Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor
A bill requiring Pennsylvania voters to show photo ID is one step closer to becoming law.
State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe's Pennsylvania Voter Identification Protection Act, HB 934, passed the House State Government Committee and will advance to the House floor for consideration. The civil rights advocates at the PA chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) were quick to criticize the measure, saying it would lead to disenfranchisement.

John Boehner Demands Trillions in Cuts for Raising Debt Ceiling

|
With another round of negotiations over raising the debt ceiling about to get underway, Speaker of the House John Boehner laid out his party's conditions in a speech before the Economic Club of New York last night. Boehner demanded spending cuts greater than the increase in the debt limit, an amount that would be around $2 trillion if the limit is extended enough to get Congress past the 2012 election, as everyone would prefer. These cuts must be "actual cuts and program reforms," he said, "not broad deficit or debt targets that punt the tough questions to the future." And absolutely everything is on the table (except tax increases!). It's the government shutdown debate all over again, except with trillions, instead of billions. That complete lack of confidence and optimism you feel right now? Bankers are feeling it too. According to the Hill, Boehner's "tough talk drew a cool reception from an audience of Wall Street executives," who "sat in silence through his demands on the debt limit" and "offered polite applause" when he was finished. More Republicans than Democrats want third party

|
Apparently Republican voters are frustrated with the GOP House majority inability - some would say unwillingness - to reign in federal spending in any dramatic way. For the first time, Gallup polling's party identification tracking numbers have found more Republicans than Democrats wishing for a third party. For most of Dubya's eight years in office, those numbers were flipped. However, as the Tea Party has exploded in stature - and as the fiscal right has become increasingly frustrated with what some feel is GOP lip service only towards fiscal conservatism - increasing numbers of Americans are beginning to look beyond the two-party strangehold. Gallup's poll found that fully 60% of Tea Party respondents in support of a potential third party movement, compared with only 44% of those who oppose the Tea Party. Christie says he may support Daniels for GOP nomination

|
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who's met with potential Republican presidential candidates seeking his backing, said he would give "real consideration" to supporting Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. Daniels, a former budget director under President George W. Bush said that he would announce whether he is running within weeks. Christie, 48, has become a rising national star in the Republican Party after he cut $10 billion in spending on schools, pensions and local aid in his first budget. He has said repeatedly that has no plans to run, even as the New York Post reported that his supporters in Iowa plan to meet with him this month to persuade him to seek the nomination. Acolyte of Rev. Wright to complicate Obama poetry night?
By Shawn Millerick
May 9, 2011
Just as President Barack Obama celebrates the killing of Osama bin Laden and the closing of the book on the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, he may also be opening up old wounds from a sidebar story from that era that haunted him during his 2008 presidential campaign.
According to the Associated Press, Obama "will celebrate American poetry and prose with a gathering of poets, musicians and artists at the White House next Wednesday night." One of the poets who will attend is Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. who goes by the name "Common."

I'm writing to you from Richmond, Virginia where today Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare was heard before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Americans for Prosperity hosted a rally outside the court house supporting Attorney General Cuccinelli's crucial effort.
A year ago, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi infamously responded to a questioner who asked her about the constitutionality of the health care legislation by flippantly saying "Are you serious?" Well today, AFP grassroots activists and Attorney General Cuccinelli made it clear that we are indeed serious about protecting the Constitution.
AFP-VA State Director Trixie Averill speaks to fired-up activists in front of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals today while AFP President Tim Phillips looks on.
Click here for more photos from the rally.
Attorney General Cuccinelli first filed this case against ObamaCare the day President Obama signed it into law. Cuccinelli's health care challenge was upheld in December 2010 when Judge Henry Hudson of Virginia's Eastern District Court ruled that the individual health care mandate was unconstitutional. While today's arguments were paramount to overturning this gross infringement on our health care rights, whichever side loses will undoubtedly appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Supreme Court will likely decide on the constitutionality of ObamaCare next year.
But no matter what happens on the legal side, as grassroots activists we must continue educating our fellow Americans on just how dangerous and disastrous this legislation is.
These are just a few of the countless harmful effects of ObamaCare:
- Costs trillions of dollars, burdening our government with inescapable debt
- Adds 16,000 new IRS agents who will be administering ObamaCare at the cost of billions
- Constitutionally flawed, forcing individuals to buy health care or be fined
- Over 1,000 unions and big corporations have been given exemptions by Obama's HHS Department while no small businesses or individual Americans are exempted
The fight also continues on Capitol Hill as conservatives are still working to dismantle ObamaCare piece-by-piece. The latest effort is from Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Representative Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) who have introduced identical bills to repeal the ObamaCare maintenance of effort requirement that is handcuffing state lawmakers as they grapple with budget deficits. In the stimulus bill, Obama promised states an easy fix to their budget problems by handing them a big payout for their Medicaid program. The only catch was that the states had to promise not to reduce Medicaid enrollment or reform their programs in any way that Washington didn't sign off on. Some states were so desperate for the cash that they took the deal. Now the money's gone but the "maintenance of effort" mandate is still in place, tying the states into knots. Hatch and Gingrey are working to repeal the mandates. Click here to read AFP's letter of support for their bills.
Rest assured AFP is going to stay on top of this issue as we have been. Today, I spoke to a couple in their 40s from Mechanicsville, Virginia who are caring for their elderly parents. The woman's mother is suffering from chronic heart problems. They told me they live in fear that a public bureaucrat will be deciding if her life merits continued treatment since quality of life is considered in the funding of patient's health care under ObamaCare. Those important health care decisions are between her mother, doctors, and family- not the government.
AFP is committed to ensuring that doesn't happen. We must defeat and overturn ObamaCare.
Sincerely,

Tim Phillips President Americans for Prosperity

On December 14, 2010, Brian Terry -- a U.S. Border Patrol Agent protecting our southern border between Arizona and Mexico -- was brutally gunned down by Mexican drug runners.
Brian Terry's MURDER was supposed to give the gun-grabbers another statistic -- "proving" the need for more funding and more anti-gun agents for the out-of-control Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE).
And with any luck, they hoped, it would also allow anti-gun Attorney General Eric Holder to set the stage for a new, PERMANENT "Assault Weapons" Ban.
But that was BEFORE news broke that the BATFE had been sitting on its hands for years while it watched Mexican gangs use "straw purchasers" to buy firearms in the U.S. and then walk the guns over the border.
And now, thanks to "Project Gunrunner," one of those firearms was likely used to MURDER Brian Terry!
That's why it's vital you click here and sign the petition to your Congressman and Senators DEMANDING they fully investigate the BATFE's "Project Gunwalker" and stop any funding increases for this rogue agency.
The truth is, the BATFE has never been afraid to spill innocent Americans' blood in their headlong rush for more money and more power.
But today, they're asking Congress for 200 new agents and $54 MILLION in anti-gun slush funds to terrorize law-abiding Second Amendment supporters -- even while BATFE agents are refusing to talk about "Project Gunrunner!"
The reason is simple. They're flat-out terrified at just how high up in the Justice Department this scandal could go!
Well, I hope you agree it's flat-out UNNACCEPTABLE for an over-funded, power-hungry and entirely unnecessary law enforcement agency to enable criminals to do their worst -- just to grab more funding power and further their anti-gun agenda.
That's why it's vital you take these actions IMMEDIATELY.
First, please click here and sign the enclosed petition to your Congressman and Senators DEMANDING they fully investigate the BATFE's "Project Gunwalker" and stop any funding increases for this rogue agency.
Along with your signed petition, please rush me your most generous contribution of $500, $250, $100, $50 or $35 to help the National Association for Gun Rights in this crucial battle.
Your generous contribution will help me make sure anti-gun crusaders at the BATFE don't get off scot-free for "Project Gunrunner."
So please rush me your most generous contribution of $500, $250, $100, $50 or $35 TODAY!
Thank you for all you do for our gun rights.
Sincerely,
 Dudley Brown Executive Director

A story from one of our NEW news portals: Olympia Snowe Challenger Calls for Her Resignation in Light of Husbands Scandal

Image via Wikipedia
In a fundraising letter sent to supporters today, Scott D'Amboise, called on Senator Snowe to resign in light of her husbands scandal saying, " Senator Snowe owes us two things - an explanation and a letter of resignation. Instead, she is holed up in her ornate Washington, D.C. office refusing to explain what she knew and when she knew it."

I'm sure you're just as outraged as I am by the Obama National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) latest assault on worker freedom.
Last month the Acting General Counsel of the NLRB, to appease International Association of Machinists union bosses, issued a complaint against Boeing for creating over 1000 new jobs in South Carolina, a Right to Work state.
"We consider this an attack on millions of workers in 22 right-to-work states, as well as a government-led act of intimidation against American companies that should have the freedom to choose to build plants in right-to-work states," Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) explained in a letter to President Obama signed by 17 other U.S. Senators.
They're right.
The union tyrants and their allies in the Obama Administration would rather shut down a plant than allow Boeing employees to work where they can't be forced to pay dues or "fees" to Big Labor.
That's why National Right to Work Foundation attorneys are offering free legal aid to victimized employees.

In fact, we've launched a media campaign including newspaper ads like the one above in the Charleston Post and Courier to alert Boeing Dreamliner workers.
By chipping in with a tax-deductible contribution of $10 or more today, you can help the Foundation's legal aid and public relations programs for cases just like this one.
Sincerely,
 Mark Mix
P.S. The National Right to Work Foundation is offering free legal aid to Boeing Dreamliner employees in Charleston, South Carolina, who could lose their jobs as the result of the Obama NLRB's complaint against Boeing.
Please chip in with a tax-deductible contribution of $10 or more today to support the Foundation's programs.

Welcome to the McJobs Recovery - How the McEconomy hollowed out the middle class
Welcome to the McJobs Recovery
How the McEconomy hollowed out the middle class. - By Andy Kroll
This story first appeared on the TomDispatch website.
Think of it as a parable for these grim economic times. On April 19th, McDonald's launched its first-ever national hiring day, signing up 62,000 new workers at stores throughout the country. For some context, that's more jobs created by one company in a single day than the net job creation of the entire US economy in 2009. And if that boggles the mind, consider how many workers applied to local McDonald's franchises that day and left empty-handed: 938,000 of them. With a 6.2% acceptance rate in its spring hiring blitz, McDonald's was more selective than the Princeton, Stanford, or Yale University admission offices. It shouldn't be surprising that a million souls flocked to McDonald's hoping for a steady paycheck, when nearly 14 million Americans are out of work and nearly a million more are too discouraged even to look for a job. At this point, it apparently made no difference to them that the fast-food industry pays some of the lowest wages around: on average, $8.89 an hour, or barely half the $15.95 hourly average across all American industries. On an annual basis, the average fast-food worker takes home $20,800, less than half the national average of $43,400. McDonald's appears to pay even worse, at least with its newest hires. In the press release for its national hiring day, the multi-billion-dollar company said it would spend $518 million on the newest round of hires, or $8,354 a head. Hence the Oxford English Dictionary's definition of "McJob" as "a low-paying job that requires little skill and provides little opportunity for advancement." Of course, if you read only the headlines, you might think that the jobs picture was improving.

Heritage Unveils "Saving the American Dream Plan" to Fix Nation's Debt, Cut Federal Spending and Restore Prosperity
With the nation's spending and debt problems on the verge of destroying the American dream for future generations, the Heritage Foundation today released a comprehensive plan to balance the federal budget, reform entitlement programs and recast the tax code to promote long-term economic growth.
The new report, "Saving the American Dream: Heritage's Plan to Fix the Debt, Cut Spending, and Restore Prosperity," constitutes "a complete rethinking and realignment of the federal government," said Heritage President Edwin J. Feulner.
The country's choices are clear:
1. Do Nothing and allow Washington to continue spending beyond its means which ultimately leads to America's decline. 2. Raise Taxes to support spending and entitlements that would require doubling rates on all income brackets and locking America into the tradition of failed European states. 3. Restore Government to its proper size and fix the spending and debt problems.
Heritage's Saving the American Dream will:
1. Balance the budget in ten years and keep it balanced. 2. Reduce the nation's debt from 70% and rising to 30% within 25 years and continuing downward thereafter 3. Reshape the size of the federal government by about half within 25 years 4. Put our entitlement programs back on track and protect lower income Americans 5. Promote savings and grow the economy with a new tax system that has a single flat rate.

"The good news is that we can do this. We can guarantee economic security to middle-aged and older Americans even as we reduce the crippling debt that we have piled onto the shoulders of the young," the report says.

New Common Sense
Applying First Principles to the Issues of Today |
Czar Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Czars are back. It's an old story, but it brings out a perennial question. As John McCain once quipped, the Obama administration has more czars than the Romanovs. There is one for drug policy, health care, climate change, and even a car czar.
What exactly is a czar? A czar is a rather unfortunate name for an individual in the administration who coordinates national policy and particular policy issues across agencies and programs.
These officials have been controversial throughout Obama's presidency. During the negotiations over the remainder of the 2011 budget, therefore, Congress defunded several of the czar positions with a "rider," section 2262.
President Obama rejected Congress's attempt to curtail his power, noting that the president has the constitutional authority "to supervise and oversee the executive branch, and to obtain advice in furtherance of this supervisory authority. . . not only from executive branch officials and employees outside the White House, but also from advisers within it." Obama elaborated: "Legislative efforts that significantly impede the President's ability to exercise his supervisory and coordinating authorities or to obtain the views of the appropriate senior advisers violate the separation of powers by undermining the President's ability to exercise his constitutional responsibilities and take care that the laws be faithfully executed."
Translation: You may not like my policies, Congress, but don't step on my presidential authority. The use of the term czar implies (appropriately) that these particular positions hold a breadth of authority and level of status beyond the particulars of the formal title, and seemingly beyond the confines of the normal administrative process. Americans have always bristled at such claims of undefined authority, and calling it by a title historically associated with despotism only serves to underscore the problem.
Yet, President Obama was right to defend his constitutional prerogative. Under Article II, Section 2, Clause 1, the president has the authority to appoint his own staff and advisors to assist in the work of his office. It is perfectly legitimate for such staff to advance the president's policy objectives within the administration as a matter of course, and presidents often appoint specific advisors to advance particular, high-level policies. The executive has this authority as a separate and independent matter from officers created by the legislature to carry out the law, and Congress cannot infringe on that authority.
The presence of policy czars does bring to the fore one of the most vexing problems of the administrative state: under which branch does it fall? Do the technical experts of the administrative state exist in some floating "Fourth Branch," unmoored from politics and insulated from public accountability and control? Or does Congress get to control them, bypassing the president and giving them specific, parochial directives? Or do they answer to the president?
Early twentieth century Progressives laid the groundwork for the administrative state to be an unmoored Fourth Branch. They argued that policy-making should not be placed in the hands of politicians-elected, inexpert officials who were unfamiliar with the practicalities of modern society. Rather, Congress should delegate its legislative power to enable technically-trained experts, removed from day-to-day politics and political control, to make policy.
In practice, the administrative state appears to be under both Congress and the president. Since bureaucrats exercise law-making power and make rules and regulations, they should answer to Congress. Insofar as these experts are housed in executive agencies, they are under the president's control.
The rise of government by bureaucrats - due to the delegation of power from Congress to administrative agencies, and combined with the removal of those agencies from the president's control - has led presidents from both parties to use various mechanisms to reclaim the bureaucracy. FDR, Nixon, Carter, and Reagan each attempted administrative reorganization. Nixon, Reagan, Bush (41), and Clinton had policy czars. President Obama's attempt to exert control over administrative agencies is clearly nothing new.
Czars are a symptom of a much more serious sickness - the fact that Congress has transferred a great deal of its authority to administrative agencies, and neglected to put anyone in charge of the whole structure. It is unlikely that Obama's czars will decrease the number of regulations. But, it may bring a little accountability to the bureaucracy. The more government regularly operates as a matter of course outside of popular consent, the more we become clients rather than rulers of a vast and distant government, the less we are self-governing, and the less we control our own fate. And that, as Alexis de Tocqueville warned in Democracy in America, is the recipe for a benign form of despotism that truly imperils our democratic experiment.

Statement from Congressman Fitzpatrick on H.R. 1230 | |
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick released the following statement on H.R. 1230, the Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act.
"The House of Representatives today passed a bi-partisan bill which expands the sale of oil and natural gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico and expedites the sale of leases off the coast of Virginia which have been delayed or cancelled by the Obama Administration. Today's vote was an important step by members of both parties in Congress on the road to energy independence.
"The United States has been blessed with vast natural resources, and with rising gas prices and increasing unrest in the Middle East, the need to develop our homegrown sources of energy in an environmentally responsible manner has never been more apparent. I believe in an 'all-of-the-above' national energy strategy which includes not only oil and natural gas, but also wind, solar, hydrogen, clean coal, and biomass energy. I look forward to partnering with my colleagues in Congress as we work to create jobs and secure America's energy future."

On Tuesday's Program
Glenn returns to radio LIVE from Jerusalem!
EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Glenn at the Garden Tomb
Why is Glenn in Israel? He explained in the second hour of today's radio program that Israel is being set up and all of the uprisings and power shifts are lining up to be detrimental to their safety. Glenn encountered several citizens who told him, 'we are very alone here.' They are getting more alone by the minute as radical elements, who openly seek the destruction of Israel, are making huge power gains across the Middle East. So what is Glenn doing there? He explains more on radio today AND in this exclusive video Glenn recorded from the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem.
PHOTOS: Of Glenn's Israel trip HERE.
Least threatening person ever quarantined by El Al Airlines: Mercury's Liz Julis was held up for hours as were other members of Glenn's team heading to Israel. This system works for Israel - but is it reasonable for America? Glenn, Stu and Pat debate it on radio today. WATCH
Media ignores 'Allahu Akbar!' chant from passenger
You probably heard the news that an unruly passenger aboard a recent American Airlines flight tried to burst into the cockpit. But what you likely haven't heard is that the passenger was shouting 'Allahu Akbar' as he ran towards the cockpit, and according to witnesses was fidgety and acting strange the entire time. The Blaze has an incredible montage of news clips ignoring all the key details of the story, leaving them to declare the attacker had 'no known terrorist ties' that they were aware of - WATCH.
Kids react to UBL's death... staged?
This is one of the more amazing videos you will ever see -- kids reacting to the death of Osama bin Laden. Their reactions are so spot-on that Glenn wonders if the clip is somehow staged or edited - but it sure doesn't seem like it. These kids make more sense than any host on MSNBC did in the wake of the killing of the #1 most wanted terrorist in the world. Check out the fantastic clip and get Glenn's reaction HERE.

Glenn abandons diet just shy of goal
Glenn was on a hardcore vegan raw diet and had just hours to go before winning a bet on how long he could stay on the diet -- but ended up caving just shy of the deadline and lost the bet. Glenn tries to argue his way out of defeat by saying it doesn't count in Israel, but doesn't get very far with that defense. So, what was the last straw for Glenn? He discusses the diet on radio today.

What are you paying for gas? Is there any end in sight for the skyrocketing gas prices? It doesn't look like it. Glenn, Pat and Stu have the stats on high gas prices and the insanely high gas prices overseas. What are they? Glenn has the answer on radio today.
Osama bounce = 3 points?
A new poll suggests that the trash talk from the left that Obama will be unbeatable after killing bin Laden was premature -- crediting The President with only a 3 point bounce. Glenn immediately predicted the bounce would be short lived and it was. People are glad bin Laden is dead, but that doesn't negate the economic struggles millions of Americans are facing.
