I have an urgent update on the Right to Work reforms in Wisconsin and Ohio.

The good news is, the fight for worker freedom is spreading.

On Thursday, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and I will testify on "State and Municipal Debt: Tough Choices Ahead" before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in Washington, D.C.

Thanks to concerned citizens like you, Wisconsin and Ohio have already passed government-sector Right to Work laws and other pro-taxpayer reforms to take back control of state government from the union hierarchy.

Not only that, forced-unionism states like New Hampshire and Missouri are considering Right to Work laws to guarantee the freedom of both private-sector and government workers.

The bad news is, the fight isn't over in either Wisconsin or Ohio.

In Wisconsin, union lawyers and their allies launched a legal assault against Governor Walker's bill, but they were dealt a crucial blow last week.

Wisconsin voters rejected Big Labor-backed State Supreme Court candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg, who appeared to prejudge the legal merits and hinted that she would overturn the law.

But worker freedom advocates must remain vigilant as the union bosses plot recall campaigns against Wisconsin Senate Republicans who supported Governor Walker's bill.

Meanwhile, in Ohio, Big Labor has initiated a referendum campaign to repeal the recently-passed Senate Bill 5, which like the Wisconsin bill, limits government-sector union monopoly bargaining power.

As other states debate the role of monopoly bargaining in state and local government, it's worth remembering that just five short months ago, the dedicated action of Right to Work supporters killed Harry Reid's "lame duck" attempt to impose a monopoly bargaining mandate by federal fiat.

The conference was co-sponsored by the American Constitution Society, another hard Left Marxist organization which seeks to rewrite the Constitution. Attorney General Eric Holder not only previously served on the ACS Board of Directors, but is keynote speaker for their 2011 Convention.

Lerner identifies this as a union plan, presumably crafted by his cronies at the SEIU, and he calls for the aid of other Obama-faction leaders and community organizers.  But evidence suggests Lerner may already have the assistance of Administration insiders and the Community Organizer in Chief - Barack Hussein Obama.

White House visitor logs show that Stephen Lerner has visited the White House repeatedly over the last two years.  At least one of these visits was arranged by the office of then White House Political Director Patrick Gaspard - one of Lerner's previous SEIU colleagues and former leader of one of the most notoriously militant SEUI chapters.  Gaspard, not coincidentally, is a close Obama advisor who is now the Executive Director of the Democratic National Party and a key player on Obama's 2012 election team.

Obama made clear in a now infamous 2008 campaign rally that SEIU's agenda is his agenda. Obama led a SEIU member chant after recalling how he started his early "organizing career" with SEIU troops on the ground, and went on to declare, "Just imagine what we can do together.  Just imagine a President whose life's work is your (SEIU's) work"!  It seems we no longer need to imagine.  The present occupant of the Oval Office has brought sedition to the presidency - the highest office in the land.  Barack Obama's own front group "Organizing for America" helped stage the recent Wisconsin "Days of Rage" protests that were notable for union-led violence, death threats and radical acts of intimidation, and now it appears he and his Administration may be connected to a far-left coalition of subversives actively plotting to collapse the American economy.

In normal circumstances, we could count on the Department of Justice to investigate and uphold the rule of law.  But alas, as we have seen with Eric Holder's refusal to prosecute colleagues, supporters and friends of Obama, including the election fraud and racist thuggery at the hands of the New Black Panthers, the once venerable DOJ is a rogue agency in a rogue Administration, and can no longer be trusted to do its duty.  Why have not the murky, possibly orchestrated causes behind the terrible economic crisis of the 2008 national fiscal collapse been investigated and disclosed to the nation?  No, we must instead call upon this 112th Congress, and demand an immediate investigation of Stephen Lerner, and all of those who participated in his conspiratorial call to anarchy, sedition and economic terrorism on March 19.  That investigation must include disclosure of all the participants and plotters lurking behind the scenes who are actively working to subvert, disrupt and destroy America - even if that road leads us directly to the White House.

1. The President Will Offer Unicorns

Today at 1:00 p.m., President Barack Obama will address the nation to talk about balancing the budget.

Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told the White House Press Corp that Paul Ryan's budget plan is a non-starter because the budget is not balanced. Carney failed to mention that Barack Obama's budget does not balance either.

In fact, it is Paul Ryan who is necessitating Barack Obama's speech. Obama set up his deficit commission and then, upon getting its recommendations, treated it as the red headed step child of the administration. It was neither seen nor heard. When Obama gave his State of the Union address he ignored the commission in its entirety.

Only after Paul Ryan came up with a detailed plan did Barack Obama have to respond. More the follower of the free world than leader of the free world, Obama will yet again follow someone else's idea and explain how his is better.

What we know from the plan is that it will not be better. It will be more of the same backfilled with wishes, dreams, and unicorns. It will also include massive tax hikes and finally embrace the deficit commission while, no doubt, Obama works furiously behind the scenes to undermine it.

The top one percent of income earners in the nation earn only 19.6% of income in the nation, but pay 41% of the taxes in this country. The top 5% of income earners in the country pay 60% of all taxes in the country. How asking them to pay more is in any way fair or equal treatment is beyond me. But Obama will ask them. To Obama, all men should be treated equal except the successful.

2. Don't Call Them Easter Eggs, Intolerant Monsters! They are Spring Spheres

A Seattle public school has decided that Easter eggs are super offensive and not politically correct. They've renamed them Spring Spheres (even though eggs are not spheres. This is our public education system at work, people).

Our immigration system is stuck in the Kennedy days of the 1960's when our population was half of what it is today. Over the past few decades, in addition to the migration of 12 million+ illegals, we have allowed legal immigration to spiral out of control. We no longer promote an immigration system which benefits Americans, rather an unsustainable system of chain migration. This system encourages immigration which is too random, too low skilled, and quite simply too much. While our historical average for annual immigration ranged from 200,000-400,000, the current inane system has allowed for over 1 million new immigrants almost every year for the past decade. Again, a disproportionate number of those immigrants are low skilled.

D.C.'s Mayor Arrested for Not Understanding the Constitution

The federal government might not have shut down on Monday, but rush hour traffic stopped in our nation's capital when the mayor of Washington, D.C., Vince Gray, already serving under a cloud of corruption, was arrested while protesting Congress' budget agreement. Gray, city council members and more than 200 protesters blocked Constitution Avenue and diverted police resources, shouting, "Free D.C." and "We can't take it no more," all in response to new restrictions on spending that Congress placed on the District of Columbia. But they should have been protesting outside Constitution Hall, not the Capitol, because that is there where the Framers created the role for our nation's capital that Gray is complaining about today.

The Civil War began one hundred and fifty years ago today, when Confederate soldiers fired on the Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Tensions were high in the months prior to the battle at Fort Sumter, as President Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office and seven southern states seceded. To discuss the Civil War, we sat down with Mackubin T. Owens, professor at the Naval War College and expert in military history.

NCS: Professor Owens, what was the primary cause of the Civil War?

Owens: The proximate cause of the war was the Southern states' attempt to break up the Union, and Lincoln's refusal to acquiesce to the Union's destruction. For Lincoln, the American Union was a means to an end-the survival of republican government. Secession struck at the very heart of republican government. As Lincoln said in his First Inaugural, secession is essentially anarchy, and no republican government can survive if the principle of secession is accepted.

But the reason behind secession and the deeper cause of the war was slavery. All disagreements between the North and the South were rooted in the issue of slavery. In 1860, the Federal government had no authority over slavery in the states where it existed. States still maintained authority over the institution within their borders. Lincoln and the Republicans, however, believed that the federal government could prohibit the expansion of slavery into the federal territories. Slave states rejected this exercise of federal power and believed their interests were best served out of the Union rather than within it.To the extent that the war was about "states' rights," it concerned the "right" to hold slaves and the "right" to expand slavery into the federal territories.

NCS: How would you assess Lincoln's performance as Commander-in-Chief during the Civil War?

Owens: On paper, Confederate president Jefferson Davis was better prepared to be a war leader. But Lincoln proved that success as a war president requires more than an impressive resume-it requires character and perseverance. Lincoln set a high standard for leadership in time of war. He called forth the resources of the nation, appointed the agents of victory, set the strategy (Lincoln was arguably a better strategist than his generals were), restrained those who would cooperate with the disunionists, and provided the rhetoric that stirred the people. Most importantly, he did these things within a constitutional framework.

NCS: Why did the Union win the war?

Owens: Union victory was not preordained. Although the Union possessed superior resources, a strategy was necessary to organize and employ these resources. In the end, Union strategy, which included such steps as the Emancipation Proclamation, was superior to Confederate strategy.

NCS: What was the biggest military mistake of the war?

Owens: There were military blunders on both sides, but not all military mistakes had strategic or political consequences. Confederate General Leonidas Polk's decision to violate Kentucky's "neutrality" by occupying Columbus in September 1861 was one such consequential blunder. Polk's decision prompted the Kentucky legislature to request federal aid to resist Polk's advance, effectively ceding the state to Union control for the remainder of the war. Lincoln is reputed to have said, "I would like to have God on my side but I must have Kentucky." Polk's blunder not only enabled Union control of Kentucky but also allowed the Union to control the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, which allowed access to western Tennessee and northern Mississippi.

The Union made several blunders that protracted the conflict. Union General George McClellan's failure to move quickly during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862 against weaker Confederate forces was a missed opportunity to end the war. Had he moved with more alacrity, McClellan might have captured Richmond in the spring of 1862. A Union capture of Richmond, coupled with simultaneous Confederate losses in Tennessee might have ended the war. McClellan's failure to commit his reserve at Sharpsburg/Antietam and therefore defeat General Robert E. Lee's overstretched force was another missed opportunity.

NCS: What about Pickett's charge at the Battle of Gettysburg?

Owens: I do not include Lee's decision to launch "Pickett's charge" on the third day at Gettysburg as a blunder. Based on the outcomes of campaigns since June 1862 and on the results of the first two days of battle at Gettysburg, Lee had reasonable expectations of the charge's success when he ordered the attack.
 
NCS: What's the most underappreciated aspect of the war?

 Owens: The diplomatic front is the most underappreciated aspect of the war. The Union won the diplomatic war, because Lincoln and his Secretary of State William Seward prevented European recognition of the seceded states and effectively isolated the Confederacy.

NCS: What's the best book on the Civil War that you would recommend?

Owens: James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era is the best one-volume treatment of all aspects of the lead up to the war and to the war itself. [Ed. James McPherson has also written a children's book on the Civil War, Fields of Fury: The American Civil War]

Budget tricks helped Obama save programs from cuts

More accounting tricks

Details of last week's hard-won agreement to avoid a government shutdown and cut federal spending by $38 billion were released Tuesday morning. They reveal that the budget cuts, while historic, were significantly eased by pruning money left over from previous years, using accounting sleight of hand and going after programs President Barack Obama had targeted anyway.

Such moves permitted Obama to save favorite programs - Pell grants for poor college students, health research and "Race to the Top" aid for public schools, among others - from Republican knives.

Court won't lift stay on Arizona immigration law

DOJ sues AZ for job the Fed won't do

A federal appeals court on Monday refused to lift a stay blocking major parts of Arizona's immigration law from taking effect and said the federal government is likely to be able to prove the controversial law is unconstitutional.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals turned down an appeal filed by Gov. Jan Brewer. She had asked the appeals court to lift an injunction imposed by a federal judge in Phoenix the day before the law was to take effect on July 29, 2010.

On Mark Levin's Monday night radio show an unnamed guest, verified as a Senate staffer, said at least one senator is going to filibuster efforts to lift the debt ceiling, unless a constitutional amendment mandating a balanced budget is added.
"I just wanted to tell you the strategy of the senator I'm proud of - is to filibuster any attempt to raise the debt ceiling unless there is balanced budget amendment passed to the Constitution," he said.

The Senate has agreed to hold a vote, this week, on a bill to defund ObamaCare. This will be the first time the Senate has voted on defunding the unpopular health-care takeover. (The House has already held several such votes.) Agreement to hold the vote was part of last week's bipartisan deal to avert a government shutdown. More On The Deal

Today brought more information on the budget deal negotiated Friday night among Speaker John Boehner, Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid and President Obama. Some of it is encouraging, some of it isn't. But that is generally what happens when parties of different philosophies reach a compromise -- no one is totally happy.

On the positive side, a memo from the House Appropriations Committee, released at 2:00 AM, states "The bill terminates two programs funded in ObamaCare..." That is the second time in recent days that components of ObamaCare have been repealed. The deal also defunds four of Obama's policy czars -- the "Health Care Czar," the "Climate Change Czar," the "Car Czar" and the "Urban Affairs Czar." In addition, Obama's "Employment Prevention Agency," a.k.a. the Environmental Protection Agency, is taking a 16% ($1.6 billion) hit to its budget.

On the down side, The Hill reports that the biggest cut comes out of the Commerce Department and "is something of an accounting trick" that eliminates $6.2 billion in unused Census funds. Other cuts are similarly achieved by zeroing out temporary accounts or unused stimulus funds.

Having said that, it is important to remember that this deal covers only the last six months of the 2011 fiscal year. There are bigger debates looming -- over the 2012 budget, the debt ceiling and entitlement reform -- all coming in the weeks and months ahead.


Voters Divided And Unsure On Ryan Plan

A Rasmussen poll today on Rep. Paul Ryan's proposal to tackle America's fiscal crisis proves just how much work we have to do to define and win this debate. There is general agreement that we must do something about the debt, but that unanimity of purpose collapses once we start debating strategy and specifics.

For example, Rasmussen's poll of 1,000 likely voters -- the population most favorable to conservatives -- found that just 26% of voters like Ryan's "Path to Prosperity" plan, while 27% oppose it and 47% don't know what they think yet. Democrats have wasted no time defining Ryan's plan as "extreme," a "path to poverty" and a "death trap for seniors."

But according to Rasmussen, the attacks haven't taken hold yet. Only 47% of Democrats oppose Ryan's plan. That seems like good news. Yet, just 44% of Republicans support it. In other words, partisans are just as divided as the general public.

Meanwhile, President Obama is playing follow the leader and will deliver an address tomorrow on entitlement reform. We know tax hikes will be the centerpiece of Obama's plan, but what else can we expect to hear from the president tomorrow? Not much, according to Democrat operatives. According to Politico, "Obama's aides are acutely aware of the danger if they are perceived as cutting too much from the entitlements at the heart of the Democratic Party's social-safety-net mandate."

And so the stage is set for 2012. One party wants to address the deficit by reducing spending, while the other party wants to raise your taxes. Sadly, the outcome is in doubt.


Divided On The Donald

Thank you, friends, for your great feedback on Donald Trump's potential candidacy for president. You were evenly divided, virtually 50/50. Many were grateful that Trump was bringing up issues in a straightforward, plainspoken manner. You appreciated his assertiveness and how, when pressed by reporters, he remains unapologetic and refuses to be put on the defensive. (Note to other contenders: Are you paying attention? People are looking for confident leadership!)

However, even among his supporters there was a common concern: Where does he stand on values issues? Others disapproved of his personal life (three marriages), while some cited past bankruptcies and other business dealings as negatives.

Trump has certainly made an impact on the presidential race. A new CNN poll today finds him tied with Mike Huckabee as the top choice among Republican primary voters. Both candidates attract 19% support, followed by Palin at 12% and Romney and Gingrich tied at 11%. It is noteworthy that Trump's support has nearly doubled in the past month. In March, Trump placed fifth in the poll, with just 10%.

Once he takes concrete steps towards formally entering the race, we will reach out to Donald Trump, just as we will reach out to all candidates. Like many of you, we have questions. We want to find out where he stands on a broad spectrum of issues, not the least of which are values issues and the judges he would nominate for the federal courts.

Here's the situation. Last November, the voters spoke, clearly stating that they wanted immigration reduced. Many new Representatives and Senators were swept into office while promising that they would start to work on immigration--NOW! But then, the budget deadlock took over everything, and very little was done on other legislation. Now, the budget has been settled for the rest of this year. Congress now has a chance to look at some other issues.

It's up to us to make sure immigration is one of those issues! During the next two weeks, Representatives and Senators will be on recess and back in their districts. Their assignment is to listen to what their constituents are saying. We need to raise our voice--very loud!

Huge turning point for Bill O'Reilly?

During Bill O'Reilly's signature Talking Points monologue last night, he was breaking down the so called budget compromise and arrived at a conclusion that was in line with much of what Glenn has been saying for some time now. O'Reilly said the left wants 'government to control the economy' and 'recast' the economic system - and they'll do it by causing economic collapse. Piven, West admit: Glenn was right

Glenn plays the audio on radio today where leftist Cornel West admits that yeah, Glenn has been right all along. When asked by an interviewer about Glenn's assertion that the left is purposefully trying to organize the poor and push them to riot, West doesn't refute the claim and says he's 'proud to be a threat' to the American system. Glenn also plays the clip of Francis Fox Piven who just can't help herself and says making trouble is the ONLY way for people to get involved in the political process. Solidarity? Teachers Union endorses convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal

So much for all those unions standing in solidarity with the cops, firefighters and teachers in Wisconsin. The AFL-CIO and the California Teachers Union have come out and endorsed convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal. Jamal shot and killed Officer Daniel Faulkner, at point blank range in December of 1981, and now he's getting all kinds of support from the same unions who supposedly love police officers. Glenn asks anyone who is in a union or knows someone in a union to pass this story around - let people know who is 'leading' their unions. Is THAT who you want to be partnered with? Alan Simpson: Men can't vote on abortion?
 
Former Republican Senator Alan Simpson must be feeling a little irrelevant these days because he's taken the cheapest route to the limelight: going on MSNBC and bashing Republicans. Simpson lashed out at the 'homophobes', 'hypocrites', and 'anti-women' in his former party. Simpson also made the incredible statement that men should not be allowed to vote on the issue of abortion. Mika Brzezinski goes on a sexist, racist rant

Mika revealed a lot about her character on MSNBC recently when she went on the attack and unleashed an ugly rant full of racism and sexism. She blamed the problems of today solely on white men, specifically targeting the top 30 earners in the United States - clearly demonstrating her utter lack of knowledge on the economy. The top earners already contribute far more than their 'fair share' while bottom earners pay little. There will always be rich, and there will always be poor - will Mika ever be able to overcome her rich guilt and accept that fact? Glenn has the audio and details on how ridiculous Mika's (and many who think like her) progressive dream is.  

One of the weirdest interviews of all time: Trump on 700 Club

The audio kicks off with Trump saying he believes in God,  the Bible is 'the thing' and that he's had a great relationship with his church over the years. It then gets a little odder when Trump talks about all the Bibles being sent to him - how he keeps them in a 'very nice place' and would never do anything negative to them. What Trump believes is not up for debate - that's not for man to judge - but the way Trump is speaking during the interview only raises more questions. Glenn has audio and reaction on radio today.
