Gail Lotze Appreciation Day
By Gail Lotze, Head of School

As I wind down my 34 years at Chance School, 19 of those years as Head of School, I want to thank each and every member of the Chance community for the many kind words, notes, gifts and surprises left on my desk. I am adding all of these heartfelt gestures to my "treasure chest" of great Chance School memories. Needless to say, my treasure chest is overflowing. Below is one of my last treasured memories involving my greatest passion, the children.

On Friday, May 18, the school celebrated me with "Gail Lotze Appreciation Day". It was a surprise event and BOY! was it ever a surprise. I had seen children come to school that GailGroupmorning with flowers and some children even said the flowers were for me. I knew that the children were asked to take the flowers to their teachers and really thought no more about it. But the grand surprise was yet to come.

At 1:30 that afternoon I was asked to come to the lobby and there, waiting for me were all of the elementary students as well as the Chums children and of, course, their teachers. The lobby was completely filled with children brimming with smiles from ear to ear, complete with a "Cheshire cat" look. (Very quietly, while I was working in my office, the children, faculty and staff tiptoed into the lobby and took their designated places for their special performance). When I opened the office door and gasped in amazement (and yes, with tears streaming down my cheeks), the children enthusiastically began singing a special song that Donna Hampton, our Music Specialist, wrote about me! Artistically designed signage and colorful placards provided added emphasis to the show. After an encore performance I was presented with many beautiful arrangements of fresh flowers that would be the GailFlowersenvy of any florist and individually designed cards wishing me well. As the children began returning to their normal activities, I was surrounded by many for individual and group hugs. The entire experience was incredibly touching and one that I will always fondly remember.

You have probably seen the Facebook photos which captured the event. What the photos did not reveal was my heart bursting with pride, seeing the children delight in recognizing and honoring me! This was yet another example of my pride in Chance School and the important work of the school that prepares the children for a lifelong love of learning.

As I conclude my time as Head of School, I am reminded by special words from cowboy and American icon, Roy Rogers, who so eloquently stated many, many times, "Happy trails to you...until we meet again".

Most sincerely,

Gail Lotze

Congratulations Graduates!
By Sue Musson, Program Coordinator

As another school year draws to an end and we send our

graduates off to various middle schools in the community, I am reminded of each child's amazing "journey of lea2012 Gradsrning" and the value of completing the Chance School program. As a result of our enriching program and our respectful approach to educating the whole child, each leaves well-educated, capable, and with a strong sense of character and integrity. Chance School is committed to the value and strength of these ideals; knowing that during these formative years, each child establishes the skills and attitudes that become a foundation for a life time.

Roots & Shoots
By Sarah Cummins, Outdoor Classroom Specialist

During our last Roots & Shoots meeting of the year, we celebrated the six members of our group who will be graduating. They each planted a native shrub near the Chance School RootsGradscompost bin (Ariana, Nicole, and Scout chose the Swamp Rose while Jacob, Kase, and Alyssa chose the Chokeberry). We will think of them each time we dispose of our trash responsibly, park in that area of the lower parking lot, or just go for a walk to enjoy the natural beauty around our school.  It has been such a joy to have them in the group. They have brought positive attitudes, creative ideas and a touching desire to help their community. These plants are a beautiful reminder of the hard work that they did to make our school a better place.
Kentucky Green and Healthy Schools
By Sarah Cummins, Outdoor Classroom Specialist

The 8 committee leaders of the Green and Healthy School's program (they call themselves the "earthwormGreen & Healthy Summits") were invited to attend the annual youth summit in Frankfort.  They were able to view environmental projects that other schools in Kentucky have done and learn about ways that we can make

our school more environmentally friendly. They heard a speech from Dr. Leonard K. Peters, Secretary of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet and received a certificate on behalf of the School for being a candidate school in the program.

We are pleased to announce that Katy Collis will be returning as one of our 2012-13 Parents' Council Presidents. She will be joined by Melanie Salsbury. The 2013 Chance Auction will be chaired by Sue Pearman who enjoyed co-chairing the 2012 Auction so much she decided to give it another go! Parents' Council and Auction both benefit by having experience on their sides. They will all be filling their committee chair positions over the next few months. Please contact them if you are interested in serving: Melanielb@insightbb.com, kcollis@bellsouth.net.

Many thanks to the entire 2011-12 Parents' Council Chairs and Committees. Katy Collis and Chris Baltas put together a great group of chairs and they did much hard work behind the scenes to be sure our parent volunteers were informed and organized.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to the rest of our Parents' Council Chairs and all of their committee members for all of their wonderful work this year.

Your Link to Information - The Chance School Website

Currently, the internal site for Chance parents and personnel includes information from the 2011-2012 school year. After June 15, information from the 2011-2012 year will no longer be available online - directories and specific class information, for example. If you need names and contact information for summer birthday parties or play dates, please make a copy of what is currently online.

As information becomes available for the 2012-2013 school year, the internal site will be updated during the summer months and throughout the school year. From your child's class activities or to school-wide events, from Parent Handbook to Directories, details are posted for easy access via the Parent Login.

  • Returning Chance families will continue to use their established user names and passwords.
  • Each "New to Chance" parent will receive an email in July, giving instructions to set up an account with user name and password for the private site.
