Spring is in the air! With Spring Break around the corner we can't help but notice the excitement in the air. We hope everyone enjoys this time to relax with family and friends over the break. We would like to thank everyone for coming out to the Barnes and Noble Bookfair on Saturday, March 24 to support Chance School and to listen to the beautiful sounds of the Chance School Chorus!
May 16th and May 17th we will take the opportunity to show our teachers how much we value their excellence and dedication to our children. There will be special events each day. Be on the lookout for more information to come from your class Room Parents.
We are also taking this time to thank all of our wonderful volunteers! We can't say this enough, your help makes this school rock! We hope you will stop to enjoy a cup of joe on us on May 16th.

Take a Trip to Outer Space With the Fours! By Kathy Attaway and Katie Stivers, Lead Teachers
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.......BLAST OFF!!! This is what you would be hearing if you were to stop by and visit Room 6. The 4 year olds are enjoying studying and talking all abo ut space. They were interested in exploring the moon and the stars, along with concentrating on each planet. The classroom is decorated with star galaxies hanging from the ceiling and the children's individualized rocket ships and astronauts on the bulletin board. The children have enjoyed building a space station in the block center, completing puzzles of the planets and even pretending to "blast off" in the rocket ship that we created as a group. To allow the children to fully engage in this experience we created air tanks. The air tanks provide them with the opportunity to feel like real astronauts, during their play. It has been fun to discover new things about space, like what are creators on the moon, who was the first person to land on the moon, and why pluto is no longer considered a planet.

The Awesome Cottage! By Eliza Steenrod, Clayton French and Clara Klein, Intermediate Students
The Cottage is amazing because every day is different. Our amazing teachers have the day jam packed with fun. Lately, in theme, we've been studying Ancient Greece and the Olympics. We learned about myths, and some of us have even tried to write our own! In writing, we are in the process of writing something Greek related: a myth, play, quest, or time traveling story. In 5th grade math, we have been doing fractions, fractions, and more fractions! In 4th grade math, we have been learning how to add decimals, mixed numbers and percents. In music, we are getting ready to play Crocodile Rock on our recorders for the 2012 Chance School Talent Show. In P.E., we just started to go outside because the weather is amazing. In art, we have been learning how to make prints. The process is to write your name on a piece of paper, and then we press the paper against the rubber, and then we carved it on to the rubber. Then you take an ink roller and make a print on a piece of paper. The reason the cottage is unique is because it is the only classroom separated from the main building. We love the Cottage! It's awesome!!!

Chance School Chorus Performs
The Chance School Chorus performed for friends and family at school on Friday, March 30. Their selections included "Junk Band Boogie" in which members used "junk" for instruments and the theme song from the very popular game "Angry Birds". They played many Orff instruments, drums, recorders, and dulcimers. It was fun to join in on the song, "Baseball Fever," as we all got to sing along with the Chorus!
It's been another wonderful year and Mrs. Hampton hopes that her singers/dancers have enjoyed Chorus as much as she has! We're looking forward to next year!

On Thursday, March 29, Chance School held its 23rd Annual Egg Drop. Kindergarten - 3rd grade students designed and created what they hoped to be "shatterproof" and "shockproof" containers for raw eggs that were dropped from the school's Treehouse deck to the ground. After the "drop" students checked to see if their egg survived or became "scrambled". Students look forward to participating in this spring tradition and putting science to practical use.

Chance School Volunteers Help Storm Victims
By Sarah Cummins, Outdoor Classroom Specialist
The families, faculty and staff of Chance School pulled together and held a 3 day donation drive for victims of the March 2 tornado in Trimble County. After collect ing and delivering more than 3 large truck loads of goods, 40 individuals from Chance School, including students, parents and teachers, volunteered at the Morgan Community Center to assist with the organization and distribution of food and other necessities for the storm victims. A few parents also stayed to help with the clean-up of one area where 5 mobile homes were completely destroyed. Many families lost a lot when the tornado hit and are just starting the process of putting their lives and homes back together. They still need our help and we will have many more volunteer opportunities in the near future. Please stay tuned to Enews, the Chance Facebook page and the internal Website for updates.

2012-2013 "Back to School" Packets Due July 1
Believe it or not - we are gearing up for the 2012-2013 school year. That means a new set of papers for each student for the upcoming school year. And because packets are being distributed on Wednesday, April 18, you have 10 weeks to complete these papers and return them to the school office by July 1. We suggest you get started now!
As an incentive, the school will have a drawing for families meeting the July 1 deadline and present one award of $50.00 to the organized and lucky winner! Your name will be entered if and when you send in complete paperwork for each student (and his/her parent(s)) on or before the due date! If you have more than one child, your name can be entered more than once... according to the number of complete sets we receive. So attend to these "Back to School" papers in a timely and organized manner and the award may be yours!
If you misplace your packet, documents are available for you to print copies from the school's website (public or private) in Admissions & Tuition/Back to School section.
