Tell a Friend about Chance
Please help us recruit others to the school by sharing the school's "view book" (distributed to Chance families in registration packets) with a friend or colleague. The book includes a comprehensive account of life at Chance, 2s through grade 5, and captures the hallmarks that make Chance unique and outstanding. Encourage interested parents to call the school for a tour. Additional copies of the guide book are available in the school office.

Introducing the Debbie Houston That I Know
By Gail Lotze, Head of School As announced recently, the school is undergoing a change of Head. Now that I am retiring after 35 years at Chance School, I have the honor of handing over the reins to Debbie Houston as Interim Head for the upcoming school year. So as I pass the baton.......
I first met Debbie Houston in the 1980's when her youngest son was only an infant. The following year I had Debbie's daughter in my full day Kindergarten class. From the mid 80s to the present, Debbie and I have been peers as well as employer and employee and in every situation, colleagues. Our friendship and professional relationship go back over 25 years.
The Debbie that I know is warm, friendly and dedicated to her passions. She has an incredible sense of humor that will constantly amaze all with her quick and witty repartee. Above all Debbie has a sense of integrity and honesty that is evident in everything she undertakes. It is an honor and a privilege to call Debbie a peer, a colleague and a friend.
Debbie has had many roles at Chance School. From parent to Board President to classroom teacher (during the school year and at summer camp) to teaching adults in the Developing Capable people class, Debbie has been successful in each and every area. As I complete this school year and tenure as the Head of School, I am both relieved and excited to turn the reins over to Debbie. I know that Debbie will lead the school with the mission, vision and philosophy intact and that the needs of the children will always come first.
Congratulations to Debbie Houston as Interim Head. The children and families at Chance School are so very lucky to have such a gifted and talented person.

News from the Three's By Nan Malthouse, Lead Teacher and Ann DiGiuro, Assistant Teacher
These three year olds never cease to amaze us. We are having a great year. A trip to the Fire Station in November was during our unit on community helpers. In January we studied penguins and arctic animals and did science projects on thawing ice and making frost. In February we had a unit on the healthy heart and had a medical center set up in our room. We spent time on our pet unit and set up a pet wash center in our classroom. We continue to have our weekly yoga class and have been working on many new poses. The children love this because it is so easy for them. Now our room is full of dinosaurs which every 3 year old loves.
The children have been busy reviewing their numbers, shapes, colors, opposites and rhyming words. They can draw and tell a story and have been writing their names. As the Spring comes we will be busy planting seeds in our classroom and will be going outdoors with Ms Sarah for our outdoor classroom activities. Spring will also bring a unit on farm animals and more science projects. As the year ends we will have our annual Spring Fling and will invite families to come for some musical entertainment. We hope to see you there!

"Hands On Animals" in Primary 15 By Janet Farmer and Leslie Linde, Lead Teachers
Primary #15 is "Hands-On" animals. We kicked-off our Animal Unit focusing on mammals with a trip to Feeder Supply and the Kentucky Humane Society. We made them doggy biscuits and learned how to responsibly care for a pet. We loved petting the cats and dogs. Mrs. Cummins came to our classroom and shared her experiences working directly with primates in Africa. Mrs. Rucker shared about the zebra born to a surrogate mare on her farm from the Louisville Zoo. We also had MANY dogs visit our room.
Then we moved onto birds. The Raptor Rehab of Kentucky came and shared an owl, a turkey vulture, a red tailed hawk and a pair of kestrels. We learned about their diet, habitats and unique characteristics. We observed a bird blind and went for a snowy walk through the woods at the Louisville Nature Center. Centers proved to be exciting when we dissected owl pellets and chickens. We also made our own bird feeders and bluebird houses. The highlight of our study of birds is hatching our own eggs in the classroom. We turned the eggs twice a day for 21 days in hopes a baby chick will emerge. We'll let you know!
We look forward as our Animal Unit continues having new 'Hands-On" experiences with fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.

Parent Education
The school is extending an invitation to you, to continue learning as a Chance parent. Mark your calendar now and gain a greater understanding about early childhood development and the school's commitment to excellence in education. You and your child will benefit!
Please RSVP for adult attendance (and child care when offered) at 502 425-6904 or office@chanceschool.org.
Friday, March 16, CANCELED - The Blessing of a B Minus
Our book discussion leader, Lisa Howie, is not available for this session as she has committed to being a permanent sub in the Primary 2/3 classroom at Chance (while one of our teachers is on maternity leave). And her work with the children takes priority over her work with parents! But she and I would like to encourage you to keep reading!
Tuesday, March 27, from 9 - 11:00am Meet with the Head - The Race to Nowhere
Chance School is once again hosting a screening of the highly acclaimed film, The Race to Nowhere. The film courageously examines "the dark side of America's achievement culture" and powerfully extends a "call to mobilize families, educators and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare our youth to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens."
The film takes the stand that the school system, with its focus on test results has dramatically changed the curriculum and the way that children are taught. Something is unequivocally wrong with this formula and it is the children who are paying the ultimate price.
Join us in viewing the film and in a discussing, and even challenging, conventional thinking about how children are educated.
Maximum number of adults: 25 Due to room availability, we are limited to 25 adults for this screening. Location: Art Room, 2nd floor in the main building with Gail Lotze, Head of School RSVP for adult attendance & child care by March 23.

Come Discover How Summer was Meant to be! by Kim Tabler, Extended Program Coordinator
As hard as it is to believe, summer is right around the corner. This is the time to start thinking about what your children would like to do after the school year ends. Summer Under the Trees - summer camp at Chance School - is a great option if you are looking for outdoor experiences, good friends and the Chance School philosophy. This year camp will run for four weeks, June 18 - July 13 (no camp on July 4), and campers may register for one or more weeks. Programs are available for ages 2 years through 5th grade, and will run from 9:00am - 12:00pm. Campers three years old through fifth grade also have the option to extend the day until 3:00pm for one or more days per week.
Each week will offer art, games, music and discovery around various outdoor themes, including "I Love Dirt!" and "Here Comes the Sun". Specialty camps, including a tennis camp and a Lego's camp, will also be available for elementary children.
Camp registration packets, with all the details, will go home in early March.
See you at camp!

Chance Auction - "Totally Awesome 80's!"
By Debbie McCoy, Director of Development
The second of our two major fundraisers, the Chance Auction, Totally Awesome 80's, was held on Saturday, February 25 at the Henry Clay. 80's music filled the air and guests, dressed in their finest neon, acid washed, hard rock, or preppie clothing couldn't help but dance in the hallways.
Auction Chairs, Mica Jochim and Sue Pearman and their amazing auction committee started work last summer and put together a "Totally Awesome" evening of fun and fundraising. Te achers donated time and talent with their fabulous classroom items and Teachers Just Want to Have Fun items and many of them worked as volunteers. Parents were generous with their donations of items, their time and their enthusiasm. Mike McDermott, our auctioneer/parent deserves a huge round of applause for the most successful Live Auction ever!!! Two generous bidders duked it out over an art project! Mike persuaded the teachers of the class to create a second painting and the bidders both paid top dollar. Everyone was happy! Chance wants to thank all bidders of the evening, especially those who rallied for the cause and dug very deep to bid on the Live Auction items. Over $11,000 was raised for the Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund. If you'd like to make a donation, please contact Gerin Ballard in the Business Office.
Thanks to our sponsors, donors, attendees, staff, teachers, parents, grandparents and friends for another successful Chance Auction. Results will be announced soon, once the dust settles and the bills have been paid. We start work now on next year's auction. Who wants to join the fun?
A survey will be sent to all parents so that we can learn what you liked and what our wishes are for future auctions. Thank you all!

Financial Aid Applications Due on or Before March 15
Chance School offers partial financial aid to those families whose children have been accepted at Chance School and can demonstrate need for financial assistance. Due to limited dollars, students must be registered in a five-day program for consideration. Priority is given at the elementary level to achieve full enrollment, gender balance and diversity goals.
After securing a child's enrollment at Chance for the upcoming school year (by returning the Registration Form and $100 refundable registration fee), the next step is to complete an aid application online according to the 2012-2013 Financial Aid Outline, linked here and made available in registration packets. Information is posted on the internal website as well with a direct link to FAST (Assess via Chance School's website in the Admissions & Tuition section, Tuition and Financial Aid.). It is important that the required FAST application and supporting documents are submitted to FAST - Financial Aid for School Tuition - by March 15. A decision will be rendered by May 1, after the Financial Aid Committee has received a financial analysis and recommendation from FAST and reviewed the information. An enrollment contract will be drawn, reflecting the aid the school can offer based on a family's qualification and funds available. All applicants completing the required steps by March 15 are included in first-round decisions when maximum funding is available. Applicants providing required paperwork after this due date are considered if funds are still available.
All information submitted for the purpose of making financial aid decisions is strictly confidential. Financial aid decisions are awarded on a year-by-year basis. All recipients must reapply for each school year in order to be considered for financial assistance. Direct your questions to Gerin Ballard, Director of Finance and Operations, at 425-6904 or gerin@chanceschool.org.
