Tell a Friend About Chance
Please help us recruit others to the school by sharing the school's "viewbook" (distributed to Chance families in registration packets) with a friend or colleague. The book includes a comprehensive account of life at Chance, 2s through grade 5, and captures the hallmarks that make Chance unique and outstanding.Encourage interested parents to call the school for a tour. Better yet, bring a friend with you to the upcoming parent ed sessions offered in January and February!

The Race to Nowhere Film - An Adult Enrichment
By Gail Lotze, Head of School Kim Tabler, as Extended Program Coordinator and I are excited to expand enrichment opportunities to ou r parent body. Together we would like to invite you to view a movie that we have both previewed, "The Race to Nowhere" with the faculty and staff on Thursday evening, January 26 from 7pm to 9pm at Chance School. We have also allotted time for a discussion period after the viewing. This film will give Chance viewers a fast-forward into how expectations and pressures can impact children in their development into adults. Because Chance parents believe in the development of the whole child, we want to share this valuable insight with our parents. According to their website, RACE TO NOWHERE "is a close-up look at the pressures on today's students, offering an intimate view of lives packed with activities, leaving little room for down-time or family time. Parents today are expected to raise high-achieving children, who are good at everything: academics, sports, the arts, and community-service. The film tackles the tragic side of our often achievement-obsessed culture, with interviews that explore the hidden world of over-burdened schedules, student suicide, academic cheating, young people who have checked out. RACE TO NOWHERE asks the question: Are the young people of today prepared to step fully and productively into their future? We hear from students who feel they are being pushed to the brink, educators who worry students aren't learning anything substantive, and college professors and business leaders, concerned their incoming employees lack the skills needed to succeed in the business world: passion, creativity, and internal motivation." To view the trailer, go to www.racetonowhere.com or google Race to Nowhere.
We will not be able to offer child care on this evening but hope with this advanced notice that you will be able to join us.

Saying goodbye to Huyett Hurley and Leslie Christian By Gail Lotze, Head of School
We sadly said goodbye to two loved and respected professionals at Chance on Friday, December 16, 2011.
"Miss Hudie" (Huyett Hurley), who for the past 23 years has

welcomed our 2s through 5th graders to their school day at Chance in the early morning room, has retired from her position. Miss Hudie wants to travel with her husband and has plans to attend his daughter's wedding in India this winter. Hudie's gentle nature, warm smile and creativity allowed the early morning children to begin their day calmly in a relaxed setting. Hudie will be missed by everyone! Her team mate, "Miss Shwab" (Debsy) will capably carry on the important work of the early morning room and beginning on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 will be joind by Chance Assistant Teacher, "Miss Jennifer" Ruhl. We send Miss Hudie on her travels with our best wishes!
"Miss Leslie" Christian, 4s team teacher with Miss Amanda Bass, celebrated her last day at Chance on Friday, December 16, 2011.

Leslie's husband recently began a new job in Memphis, Tennessee and the family has joined him over the holiday break. Leslie will be genuinely missed. I know you will join me in wishing Leslie and her family best wishes in their move to Memphis.

recently out, has accepted the position of co-teacher in the 4s with Miss Amanda. Mills brings a Masters degree in IECE (Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education), 8 years of experience (6 years at Chance) and an enthusiastic personality to this position. While we were all sad to say goodbye to Leslie, we are excited to welcome Mills back to Chance.

Outdoor Classroom By Sarah Cummins, Outdoor Classroom Specialist

We have been busy planting native plant species around our school to help our native wildlife and ecosystem! Each preschool class planted a native Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) in the playground. This small shrub is perfect for a shady, moist wooded area and will attract many native insects, including the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly, as well as birds and small mammals. We will be going out each month to watch our plants develop leaves, flowers and berries.
The elementary students planted native River Oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) seeds in the Chance School Field. This perennial grass has a preferred habitat of wetlands and flood plains and has even been used to prevent soil erosion, which is a perfect match with our field! It will attract insects, birds and small mammals. We can't wait to watch the grasses grow throughout the year and observe the animal life increase in our wetland habitat.
Please feel free to visit. There are signs posted so you can easily find your child's plantings.

Roots & Shoots News By Sarah Cummins, Outdoor Classroom Specialist
The Roots & Shoots group had great success at the Chance School Holiday boutique last month. They rais ed over $500 through the sale of their home made greeting cards. They took all of the money raised to Target, where they generously supplemented our fundraiser with a gift card, and were able to make very thoughtful purchases of warm weather necessities for the Children living in the Family Emergency Shelter in Louisville. We were all happy to help our friends at the shelter have a more comfortable winter.

Enrichment Opportunities By Kim Tabler, Extended Program Coordinator
January 9 marks the start of a new set of enrichments for Chance School. Yoga, art, chorus, music - there are so many new opportunities to extend children's day in meaningful ways. I can't wait to see what new skills everyone learns in the coming weeks!
Enrichments are carefully planned so that they are a true extension of a Chance School day, addressing the whole child, cognitively, socially, emotionally, morally and physically. Children participating in enrichments have the opportunity not only to develop new skills but also to make new friends, work together as a group and build their self-esteem and confidence. Enrichments are also just a lot of fun!
For the remainder of the year, the enrichment schedule will be roughly based on six-week sessions, Feb. 27 - April 2 and April 16 - May 21. While some classes will run longer than these 6 weeks, and some may be a little shorter, these dates will provide a framework for scheduling. Upcoming sessions will include track and field, jazz and hip-hop dance, fencing and tennis, among others. Keep an eye out for something new and different that your child might enjoy!
