Moral Development
By Gail Lotze, Head of School Early childhood research has long acknowledged the importance of young children's social and emotional development. In practice, educators support children in developing a sense of morals and values in becoming solid citizens.
At Chance School we believe that our work with the whole child includes the development of a child's character by deliberately including moral awareness and growth in all aspects of the curriculum. This part of the curriculum includes the ideas of integrity, character, honor and self-discipline. Teaching these values is often reflected more in our actions than words. We support our students, from 2 year olds through 5th graders, in their moral development by: - Modeling and encouraging children to act with love and trust; kindness and unselfishness and a respect for self and others.
- Supporting children in making choices, learning to distinguish between right and wrong.
- Enlisting the children's input in solving problems and formulating solutions meaningful to them.
- Helping children make moral decisions as they begin to develop a conscience (inner voice).
- Providing rich literature that addresses human dilemmas.
- Exploring the cultures and diversity of the children in the class.
- Giving guidance and nurturing the development of morals and values which are inseparable from and woven into all learning.
When adults thoughtfully address moral development, children will in turn develop justice, mercy, fairness and honesty.

Have You Accessed to the New Chance School Website?
By Margaret Droste, Director of Admissions A number of things have changed with the launch of Chance's new website.
- First of all, the only address you need to remember is www.chanceschool.org.
- Second of all, Chance parents need a password to access the private side, with classroom newsletters, school directories, snack schedules, the school calendar, etc.
- Third of all, Chance parents have to respond to an "invitation as a new user" issued by the school. If you have not yet established your user name and password, you will receive 2 emails regarding the school's website. Please look for a 2-part email on the same day as December's E-News is sent AND complete steps in 3 days.
- The first email from the school will be titled "New User Information RE: Chance Website" with information about steps you must take in order to gain full access to the site. Again, it will be sent on the same day as December's E-News.
- The second email will be sent from the website's system itself on the same day, with a brief message and a "log-in" link so that you can take the necessary steps to set up a profile AND create your own password. The invitation will be good for three days and will then expire.
If you are unable to gain access, please contact the school at 425-6904 or amy@chanceschool.org.

Oh Kentucky! News from Primary 14 By Kathy Kopp and Jennifer Hampton, Lead Teachers
The Primary classes have thoroughly enjoyed our unit about Kentucky. We have learned so much about our great state. Through guest speakers, field trips, wonderful books and SmartBoard travel, our hands-on learning has afforded us first hand experiences. We have traveled to Locust Grove, The Kentucky Center for the Arts, Blackacre Nature Preserve, Churchill Downs and our state's capitol in Frankfort. We have learned about famous places, famous people, famous food, and yes, even famous horses! Kentucky has it all!
Our culminating events included a wonderful Kentucky Show produced and directed by our very own music teacher, Donna Hampton. The children sang songs and recited rhythmic poems about our wonderful state. Our Famous Places S howcase, a Homework Project that took off and became a huge success in our classroom, was another way the children were able to "show-what-we-know". Each child chose a favorite famous place to present to the class. They made a model and shared facts with our class. What a wonderful hands-on learning opportunity! Finally, our Taste of Kentucky Celebration was held on November 22nd. Each child brought a Kentucky dish to share with the class. We invited our families and opened the doors between our two Primary classrooms. We dined on such fine Kentucky cuisine as Kentucky Burgoo, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Kentucky Cheese Grits Casserole, Kentucky Corn Pudding, Kentucky Hot Brown Tarts, Cornbread, and for dessert..... Derby Pie and UK Blue and UL Red cupcakes! Yum, Yum!
As the words to our favorite song, "A Salute to Kentucky", say:
"Kentucky, a great state, we're proud to live in
And we think that you will all agree..........
It's the place to live for you and me.
KENTUCKY!"

The Magic Folktales! By Mary Ellen Gaines, Library Specialist
folk tale (noun)
1. A tale or legend originating and traditional among a people or folk, especially one forming part of the oral tradition of the common people.
The primary classes have been studying the state of Kentucky this year and I wanted to read a book in library class, relating to their theme study. I searched and searched for that "perfect" read aloud book and finally found one that was up to par! This "one of a kind" book allowed me the opportunity to teach the children about the area of our country known as Appalachia. On our classroom globe, we located the Appalachian mountain range and the Appalachian Trail. I showed the children photos from Appalachian and we discussed the people, music and poverty. The topic and book became so popular and liked by the students that I decided to share it with the other classes. There is something truly powerful and magical about these Appalachian tales!
The Adventures of Molly Whuppie and Other Appalachian Folktales by Anne Shelby is a compilation of short tales from the Appalachian region. The language in the book characterizes traditional Appalachian speech, with surprising turns of phrase. The children and I have been thoroughly entertained by the following folktales: The Runaway Cornbread, Molly and the Ogre Who Would Not Pick Up, A Pig Tale and Molly and the Unwanted Boyfriends. Molly Whuppie is always showing kindness toward those in need. Her character traits are extraordinary! She is strong and courageous and continually rescuing her two sisters, Poll and Betts. She is true to herself and stands up against injustice. She is a great example of independence and confidence. She is a true heroine!
Please take the time to check out this wonderful little book!

Pennies for Patients Collects $825.38
By Gail Lotze, Head of School
For our second year, Chance elementary students have participated in the "Pennies for Patients" service learning project to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
This has been a meaningful project to our elementary students because in our student body, we have two students who are Leukemia survivors! While these children and their families have been through uncertainty and years of treatment, today, both boys are strong and healthy students with bright futures ahead of them.
The "Pennies for Patients" service project extended the children's learning by inviting their participation in a first-hand experience about philanthropy; by providing the intrinsic value of helping others; and to feel compassion and pride in their ability to contribute and make a difference for others.
Thank you, Chance students, for your generous donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
