Goodbyes and Hellos

Sadly...We Say Goodbye to Some Familiar Faces

"Miss Jessica" Droste, our Office Manager, says goodbye to Chance in mid July to matriculate in to the University of Kentucky College of Law.  The first time that Jessica left Chance was when she graduated from our 3rd grade!  During her college years, Jessica has worked in our summer camps and subbed in the classrooms.  This time we send Jessica off to Lexington with our best wishes as she rejoins the student ranks in law school.

In May, we said goodbye to "Miss Patti" Ogden, our PE teacher who retired after 22 years of service to the school (see June 2011 e-news).    We wish her the very best.

"Miss Janelle" Sandberg is moving with her family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa this summer.  Though the Sandbergs will be closer to their families in Wisconsin, we are certainly sad that Janelle is leaving Chance.  Good luck to "Miss Janelle" and her family in Iowa.

Happily... Say Hello to:

Sarah Cummins joins the faculty as our Outdoor Classroom Specialist.  Sarah is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a BA in Anthropology and a BA in Psychology.   Beginning in October, the Outdoor Classroom Specialist will bring environmental awareness as well as civic responsibility to the 3 year olds through the Intermediate.    Sarah, Mom to Chance students, Coby (P3) and Theo (3s), is the leader of the Roots & Shoots Environmental Humanitarian Youth group and the school's Service Project Coordinator.  Sarah has been instrumental in establishing a school-wide recycling and composting project for the students, faculty and staff at the school.   Thank you for bringing this important topic to the forefront for everyone at Chance School.

Jenny Brown joins the faculty as our new PE teacher.  Jenny's undergraduate degree is in Elementary Education and her graduate degree is in School Counseling.  She has 7 years of teaching experience including a year teaching PE.  Jenny brings energy and enthusiasm to the PE job and will be assisted in the elementary by Kris Fenley.  Jenny and her husband have 4 children. Welcome to Chance, Jenny.

Rose Anne Phillips joins the faculty as Miss Katie's Assistant in the 3s.  Rose Anne is a familiar face at Chance because she has been a regular sub for the past two years, worked with the 2s Chums last year and has worked with the 2s this summer at Summer Camp.   Rose Anne worked in the design field for many years before beginning to sub at Chance and has two sons and one daughter.  Her warm, loving interaction with the children and her ever-present smile makes her a welcomed addition to the faculty.  Please join me in welcoming Rose Anne to the faculty.

Kim Tabler is joining the staff as our new Office Manager.   Fortunately Jessica and Kim have had some overlap of time so that Jessica can share helpful information.   Kim has her BA degree in Psychology and is a former Human Services Surveyor for the Kentucky Cabinet of Human Resources.  Kim is also "Mom" to Chance students, Erin (P2) and Jillian (K), a Girl Scout Leader , manager of the school's Scholastic Books, a former Board member and a counselor at Summer Camp.  We are so glad that you are joining the school in an official capacity, Kim.

No announcement yet on Miss Maureen Harden's Assistant in the 4s.  Stay tuned.

Summer Camp at Chance
By Maureen O'Brien, Extended Program Coordinator

What a wonderful four weeks of summer camp! The children brought their energy and enthusiasm and camp counselors were prepared! For Pet Week, Veterinarian Heidi Hulon came to speak about the care of animals.  We gave little Grover, Ms. Mary Ellen's dog, a bath and haircut too! The next week, we traveled around the world to play in the Olympic Games! The children tumbled their way into track and field events and made Greek Olympic headbands!

During Eric Carle week, we created Carlesque water-color collages, painted The Very Hungry Caterpillar and crawled like the crab frCamp CJom House for Hermit Crab.  During week three, the older children traveled around town to The Louisville Zoo, Louisville Stoneware and The Courier-Journal . . . to name a few.  Chemistry Week consisted of exploding volcanoes, slime art and "x-ray" handprints.  The last week of camp, the children splashed in sprinklers, sang "Down by the Bay," and let raindrops create their art!

Happy Summer to all!

Summer Time Fun
By Sue Musson, Program Coordinator

Summer provides a time to slow down and relax a bit in terms of routines. However, opportunities to continue to practice and reinforce your child's growth regarding cognitive, social/emotional and physical development abound at home and away. The following are some fun activities for you to consider.

*Visit the library and/or bookstore for an exposure to a variety of genre - fiction, informational, nonfiction, fantasy, pattern books, a series, etc. Ask questions while reading together - "What do you think will happen next?", "How do you think the story will end?" "If you could be one of the characters in this story, who would you choose to be and why?"CampJamie

*Create a bin with a variety of writing supplies - construction paper, stickers, crayons/ markers, pencils/pens, stationary, paper, cards, scissors, glue, glitter, tape, etc.

*Limit the use of video games, computer use, and movies while traveling or at home; instead enjoy interactive family games to extend vocabulary development, thinking skills and "together time".

*Establish a regular family time to read together, have game night, go for walks, or enjoy planning a  treasure hunt.

*Use family experiences as a story starter. Allow your child to dictate or write down summer activities in a family journal. Include photos or illustrations to accompany your book.

*Create a pretend "home" store with tagged items for sale. Offer a variety of currency for pretend shopping.

*Visit local parks, museums, the zoo and other community offerings.

*Most importantly, have your child(ren) involved in "family planning" for the summer and enjoy your time together!

Reminders

By Debbie McCoy, Director of Development

I hope you and your families are enjoying a more relaxed pace of life during the summer break.  Here are just a few things to be thinking about for the upcoming school year.

The Chance Parents' Council consists of two co-presidents, Katie Collis and Christine Baltas, several committee chairpersons and a vast array ofCampH volunteers.  As a Chance parent, you are part of the Parents' Council.  Please remember to fill out your Volunteer Sign-Up Form and turn in with the rest of your Back to School Forms.  Every parent can get involved with a job/project that fits into your schedule.  Chance is grateful for the support of our parent volunteers.

Fundraising continues during the summer months.  Use your Chance Kroger Card every time you shop for groceries and Chance receives 4% of all the dollars you spend.  Email deb@chanceschool.org if you need a new card.  And remember to reload your Kroger card regularly!

GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 30 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, eBay, Macy's and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you'll be supporting your favorite cause. Add the Chance School toolbar at http://www.goodsearch.com/toolbar/chance-school

Many of your favorite stores will automatically donate to Chance School when you shop using this toolbar. It is so easy to do and requires nothing from you except to download the toolbar and shop the way you normally would online.

Those are just two ways to help us with fundraising without making a direct donation to Chance.  Shop the way you normally would - and we will receive cash back.  It's really that easy!

Enjoy the rest of your summer.  See you all in August!

Class assignments are determined over the summer at the discretion of the Head of School based upon information including but not limited to gender balance, individual considerations, diversity and class dynamics.

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences will be held on August 12 & 15 from 8 a.m. - 12 noon. This initial conference is a time for teachers to meet with parents AND students (Child care will be provided for siblings during conference time.).  Each preschooler is asked to bring his/her school supplies to this scheduled meeting.  Elementary students will bring their supplies on the first day of class (August 17).

"New to Chance" Parent Orientation

First time parents are invited to attend an orientation on August 5 from 9 - 10:30 a.m.  To help with the transition to a new school, this meeting is held to discuss the logistics of a school day at Chance, i.e. carpool, snack and lunch, diapers, Chums, sickness policy, etc.  The Parent Handbook and internal website will be referenced with information for the upcoming school year.

RSVP by August 3 by calling 425-6904 or emailing admissions@chanceschool.org.

This is an adult-only meeting.  Unfortunately we are unable to provide child care.

Information on Internal Web Available until July 15

As the school prepares for the 2011-2012 school year, information available to current Chance parents will change on the internal website.  After July 15, information from the 2010-2011 year - directories and specific class information, for example - will no longer be available.  If you need names and contact information for summer birthday parties or play dates, please make a copy of what is currently online.

When the site is updated for the upcoming school year, a new user name and password will be distributed to Chance families.
