Exciting things in store for 2011!

We hope you all had a wonderful, fun-filled Christmas and holiday season! At Signal Hill, we find ourselves at the beginning of the new year, refreshed, inspired and full of excitement for the things to come! We are thrilled to share with you a few of our many plans for the year and we hope that you are filled with the same anticipation we are for these upcoming projects that are sure to make a positive impact on the hearts and minds of all people.

This year, Signal Hill is expanding our media tools to include more interactive, engaging resources to enhance our educational presentations for all age levels. Through our expanding Speakers Bureau, groups will have the opportunity to request speakers to address a variety of topics that complement the curriculum at any level from elementary school to university. We will develop multi-media resources which will include thought provoking films that invite discussion in group settings and online. By integrating video, hands-on projects, extra-curricular volunteer opportunities, online discussions and multi-media; Signal Hill will challenge students, teachers and church groups to consider the heart of the issues by facing them head on and engaging at a deeper level.

Signal Hill has introduced a new media campaign that builds on the powerful phrase, "Take Control, Informed Choice". This year we have added a new aspect to this campaign: texting. We have found that younger generations prefer the anonymity of texting or chatting over an intimidating telephone call. Our new message invites a woman to text a code word to our helpline to ask for help. She will receive a response asking how we can help and directing her to various services or information sources depending on her specific needs.

In addition to this media campaign we are also offering online chat and email counseling to our outreach options in addition to the 24-hour helpline.

The American entertainment industry has never been comfortable with the act of abortion. Film or television characters might consider the procedure, but even on the most libertine programs (a "Mad Men," a "Sex and the City"), they're more likely to have a change of heart than actually go through with it.

The rate of teenage pregnancy in the United States has dropped to its lowest level in 70 years and some experts pinpoint a surprising catalyst: the popularity of reality television shows chronicling the perils of teenage motherhood.

Scientists have recently developed a safe and efficient method to create induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells from adult skin cells. Many opponents of embryonic stem cell research hail this news as an important step away from research methods that rely on destroying embryos. Despite this advance, the future of iPS cell research involves challenging moral and legal issues.
