RLHT Announces It's Latest  Conservation Acquisition...

 Hunter Cove Uplands!

The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust is pleased to announce the purchase of 175 acres on the west shore of Hunter Cove on Rangeley Lake. The acquisition to be known as Hunter Cove Uplands was finalized on September 2nd and nicely compliments the existing Hunter Cove Sanctuary on the opposite shore of the cove. The property also secures an important snowmobile trail for public use and features 3,700 feet of frontage on Hunter Cove as well as 1,200 feet of frontage on Route 4 and the Mingo Loop Rd. A new nature trail system, picnic areas, and a shallow water/ paddle to dock system are all planned for the property.
Hunter Cove Uplands conserves a scenic wetland which protects water quality and provides amphibians and waterfowl with important habitat. The forests on the property are primarily old farmland that has reverted back to excellent upland habitat important to a wide array of birds and small mammals. The property also contains important deer wintering habitat. "Hunter Cove Uplands will provide the public with excellent wildlife watching and recreational opportunities", said Executive Director, Nancy Perlson. "It represents an exciting addition to the 12,500 acres RLHT has conserved since 1991."
The Land For Maine's Future Program provided $607,000 in grant funding and the Trust borrowed additional funds to be able to close on the acquisition.  This grant put us within reach of raising the $1 million dollars necessary to cover the purchase price, closing costs, and funds to enhance public access.  We would like to thank landowners Colin Grant and Joe George for their cooperation and patience as we obtained the funding from LMF which made it possible for this project to go forward.  We will now be embarking on a campaign to raise the balance of funds and pay off the debt.
2010 EcoVenture Camp for Kids -
A Great Success!!!

"Through these gates pass the future stewards of Rangeley's natural resources"

In 2010 RLHT's EcoVenture Camp for Kids launched an exciting expansion to promote camper health and wellness. We continued our more traditional efforts that provide a fun and educational outdoor experience and encourage and prepare our campers to become good stewards of the Region now and in the future.  And from all accounts, the expanded program was well worth the investment in time and effort, and was an overwhelming success for our campers and mission!
In 2010 we tripled the number of days of outdoor adventure learning and fun and added 2 additional weeks of camp. We also boosted the number of activities offered with new programs like tennis, sailing and golf instruction.  EcoVenture Camp for Kids continued to offer unparalleled opportunities to hike, paddle, swim, and learn about art and dance. We were very pleased to have joined forces with the Rangeley Region Health and Wellness Partnership to provide our campers with new opportunities to develop healthy habits through physical fitness and good nutrition.
In an effort to provide this treasured experience for the families of the community's hard working residents, RLHT again offered this entire program to local school children for just $50.00 per camper. That is less than $2.00 per day with the majority of the necessary funding coming from grants and donations made by our generous membership!
We feel that EcoVenture Camp for Kids  builds the future stewards of Rangeley's natural resources and by making the program as affordable as possible, local children filled nearly 80% of the total camper days.
As we plan the 2011 season and beyond, we need your help to keep this positive momentum going.  For every local camper we enroll for $50.00, we must raise $700.00 to cover our costs.  To endow this program and insure its future, we need people who have the vision and heart for the region' children and natural resources to help us with their support. Please consider making a contribution to this program. We thank all who have helped to help cultivate a legacy of stewardship in our campers that will provide both recreational and conservation dividends forever.
