Weed Wisdom
Coastal HayThe current drought conditions have caused us to make many changes in the way we feed our animals. Purchasing hay from outside Texas may have been one of the changes you had to make. Hay from non-native sources may carry some baggage with it on it's journey to our farms. Weeds! These weeds have the potential to plant roots and spread, causing a threat to our pastures now and in the future. Read here to learn what to look for in your hay and on your land.

Livestock Disaster Program Deadlines
cattle2The drought has been rough on our animals, land and pocket books. Disaster assistance is available to eligible ranchers and livestock producers.

The USDA Farm Services Agency list of upcoming deadlines is available here. Be sure to stay ahead of these deadlines because late filings will not be accepted. Information and links to additional information can be found on our website.

Where did the year go? The Christmas season is here, bringing beautiful poinsettia and Christmas cactus plants. Here are some tips on keeping your holiday plants looking good and healthy!

Poinsettia Plants:

  • Need plenty of bright light
  • Keep soil moist
  • Keep away from heat vents and the fireplace
  • Stay away from cold drafts

For your landscape, keep these tips in mind..

  • Hand watering is best right now. Only water the plants that need it.

  • Mid-month is time to start planting tomatoes and peppers from seed in your greenhouses.
  • It's the perfect time of year for planting woody plants like trees and shrubs.
