The 2012 AEF Board of Directors
The AEF is pleased to announce the slate of directors for 2012. Tara Gamble has been elected president; Kippy Maitland-Smith, vice president; Les Oakes, treasurer and Juliet Franke, secretary. Both Maitland-Smith and Franke were reelected to these positions.
Les Oakes is new to the board and serves as treasurer; a financial planner, he will continue the important work of managing the AEF's approximate $750,000 budget in a fiscally responsible manner. Sarah Torry, a 2011 Olds College graduate in the equine science program is chair of sport. She is also chair of the 2012 AEF conference committee and brings an important youth voice to the AEF. Brian Irving was reelected as chair of recreation and is deep in the development of the 2012 Wild Rose Trail Ride with his team. Irving is a tireless campaigner for the recreational rider and encourages that 'invisible' but large group to talk to the AEF. Also new is Trish Mrakawa, an award-winning Equine Canada coach who has taken on the responsibility of chair of education. Bill deBarres is the well known and hard working reelected chair of breeds and industry. Also new to the board is Rebecca Munoz, currently an Olds College equine science student, and elected as chair of public relations. She is a passionate advocate for youth, education and direct involvement in the horse industry.
Serving as individual directors are: Lew Hand and Alison Douglas who have returned to serve and newcomers Raylene McWade, Ken Schmuland and Laura Stenhouse. Dixie Crowson is past president.
The AEF welcomes these new members and the tremendous experience, expertise and passion that they bring to the board. The AEF also thanks these individuals for their service to the AEF and the horse industry in Alberta, and tremendous work that they did: Sandy Bell, Patricia McCormack, Cindy Holyoak and Julie Moorcroft .
Tara Gamble, the new president, served on the AEF board as an individual member and on the Scholarship Committee. She has over twenty years of industry teaching experience instructing Western, English and jumping lessons. She is the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) past president, a certified Master Clinic Instructor and is a designated professional horseman with the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). She has been fortunate enough to represent Canada as First Runner-Up Miss Rodeo Canada 1998 as well as Miss Leduc Black Gold Rodeo 1998.
In 2008, Gamble was a guest lecturer at the Ohio Quarter Horse Congress; January 2009 she presented two seminars at the Horse Owners & Breeders Conference; 2010 she presented three sessions at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Lexington, KY, and in 2011 presented at the Mane Event in Red Deer, AB. Currently she is the vice president of the Miss Rodeo Canada Organization, Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA), and was recently appointed to the Strathcona County Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee.
She is committed to working with the AEF board, staff and membership to help promote the mission and vision of the AEF. It is also her desire to assist the horse industry to solidify the great programs the AEF has, and be the premier source for education and information within the province. The AEF membership contributes strongly to the organizations' success and she is thankful for member's support.
The AEF encourages its members and equine enthusiasts across Alberta, regardless of their disciplines or sectors to contact the board members if you have questions, issues or ideas. The AEF welcomes discussion and feedback to improve its services not only to the membership, but also all equine owners and people passionate about equines. Health, welfare and safety of humans and equines are paramount as is the celebration of success and having fun.

Help us Grow our "Herd" of Programs
Please consider a donation to the Alberta Equestrian Federation. All amounts big or small qualify for the AEF's application to the Alberta Community Spirit Donation Grant to match your donation amount.
The donation grant provides an opportunity for eligible non-profit organizations to receive a provincial grant. The grant is based on total annual cash donations from individual Albertans that have been received by an eligible organization over a 12-month fiscal period. The grant can be used to support an organization's operations, programs and/or capital projects. The maximum grant available is $25,000 up to a maximum of $50,000 over three years. A minimum total of $1,000 in eligible cash donations needs to be received prior to applying for a grant.
This grant goes toward supporting our programs and educational scholarships given out each year to AEF members.
The AEF will apply for a matching government grant, which effectively doubles any contribution from an individual. Help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 in cash donations this year.
Help us grow our "herd" of great programs. Together we can make a difference in Alberta for our equine community.

Canadian Sport Policy 2.0
The consultation and engagement process for the Canadian Sport Policy 2.0 has been extensive. Over the past year, a broad spectrum of Canadians and Canadian organizations interested in sport have shared their views through a series of consultations at the community, provincial and territorial and national levels, as well as through an on-line e-survey. Feedback from the consultations as well as a summary report prepared by the Conference Board of Canada formed the basis of the discussion paper "Towards a Renewed Canadian Sport Policy" which was examined at the National Gathering in November 2011. These reports, including the summary report from the National Gathering are available on the SIRC site at www.sirc.ca/csprenewal.
The draft of the Canadian Sport Policy 2.0 is now available for your review. Organizations and individuals are invited to submit their comments at www.sirc.ca/csprenewal on the draft policy before March 7, 2012. In particular we would like to hear:
- What are the strengths of the draft CSP 2.0?
- What are its weaknesses?
- How could these weaknesses be addressed?
- Do you have any additional comments and feedback?
Canadians have shown that they are passionate about sport. The renewed Canadian Sport Policy seeks to capture and embrace the value and importance of sport and advance the public policy outcomes inspired by sport in Canada.
On behalf of the Sustained Engagement and Collaboration (SEAC) Work Group, we would like to thank you for sharing your ideas and helping us to build the next Canadian Sport Policy. If you have any questions regarding the Canadian Sport Policy 2.0, please do not hesitate to contact Steve Findlay at Steve.Findlay@pch.gc.ca . |
