Sandy Bell

Sandra (Sandy) Bell

President

This will be Sandy's fourth year running for the AEF Board of Directors, and she is confident that she has the experience needed for the presidential position. The first two years, Sandy was the Treasurer and started the Finance Committee to improve financial processes. Because of these efforts, the AEF accountant was able to remove his reservations in the year end statements about how finances at the AEF were managed.

Last year, Sandy was an individual member of the board, so has seen the workings of the board from that perspective. As well, Sandy sat on the Scholarship Committee and the Trail Ride and Drive 2012 Committee, and continued to serve on the Finance Committee. Sandy's work as Treasurer and on the Finance Committee brought the AEF out of a deficit of $130,000 to a balanced budget for the past two years. She supported the AEF Executive Director(ED) in the capacity of volunteer communications consultant and general support, and she was in touch with the ED several times a week.

Sandy has more than 25 years of experience with small businesses and very large public sector organizations and national non-profits. Currently, she is working in strategic communications at the University of Calgary, particularly in internal communications and issues management. Sandy holds a MA (Communications and Technology) from the University of Alberta and a BSc (Psychology) from the University of Calgary, and she has participated in numerous national and international workshops and conferences.

The professional background that Sandy offers to the AEF includes extensive experience with:

  • Building community partnerships
  • Undertaking business and financial planning
  • Conducting strategic visioning
  • Creating communications processes and annual reports
  • Sharing news on a timely basis and dealing with emerging issues
  • Establishing new policies and member services
  • Consulting with large groups and representing their views
  • Supporting staff and volunteer development

Sandy is a native Albertan and lives in Cochrane so she can be near her two grandchildren. An appreciative fan of all types of riding and driving, she is relearning riding from the natural horsemanship perspective. Her draft cross mare, North to Alaska, is teaching her about patience and courage. Her quarter horse gelding, Target, is releasing her inner extreme cowboy.

Natascha Birovljev

Natascha Birovljev Individual Director

In 2005, Natascha became a permanent resident in Canada. Growing up in Germany, she had her own horses and competed in dressage for more than 10 years. She has her master's degree in religious studies and German literature and also achieved a certificate in Alterative Medicine for Animals in 1999. Here in Canada, Natascha and her husband offered trail rides into the backcountry until last year. She is currently the president of the Alberta Country Vacation Association (ACVA) and volunteers in the Therapy Dog program of St. John's Ambulance in Red Deer. Natascha is also studying through distance education at Mount Royal University for a certificate in Management of Non Profit Organizations.

Natascha is interested in becoming an individual director of the AEF board as this role would allow her to participate in committee work. She desires to be involved with the Recreation Committee and participate with the AEF Fundraising Trail Committee and is also interested in the position of Promotions and Publicity.

Natascha lives with her husband, two dogs, nine horses and two cats on a quarter section northwest of Caroline. Her main interests are training dogs, riding, social media marketing, traveling and literature. She is looking forward to meeting the AEF and sharing her ideas and knowledge with the committees.

Alison Douglas

Alison Douglas
Individual Director

Alison has been an AEF Individual member for 9 years. Her volunteer experience and involvement includes a member of Trail Riding Alberta Conference for 6 years, involved in 4H competitions when she lived in Manitoba, a Level 2 judge for Gymnastics Alberta and judged for 3 years. Alison was a Director for Banff Minor Hockey for 3 years, Director for Central Alberta Hockey League representing Banff for 2 years.

She has ridden in several competitive trail rides over the past 9 years and finally was a race director last year. Alison is part of a group that rides out of Banff on all the trails and backcountry areas and plans overnight rides. She rode in Ride and Tie for Canada in 2009. Alison has sat on several Condo Boards as a director and has managed several condo projects. She also worked with the SPCA on several projects and has owned and operated her own business for over 13 years.

Alison held the position of Chair of Recreation for the AEF in 2009; this year Alison seeks a position as an individual director on the AEF Board.

Alison has 2 children, a son who plays hockey and a daughter who competes in gymnastics. She has had horses since the age of 8 and was a passionate rodeo rider when she was young. Both her kids tried trick riding and she only wishes she could have. She loves all horses (and animals) but must admit she's partial to Morgans and Arabs. She has 5 horses that live in Banff part year and rides as much as she can. Alison has been a competitive runner almost all her life and that is how she used to catch her first pony. Chase her down. She ran in 2000 on the Alberta Masters team in the Canadian championships for track and field and cross country and her team won at the cross country meet.

Juliet Franke

Juliet Franke

Individual Director

Juliet has been a part of the AEF as a representative of the Alberta Morgan Horse Club since 1996 and as the recording secretary for the AEF Board.  Juliet has had a horse since she was six and her family has been involved with the Morgan horse  breed for over 40 years.

With her husband, Duane, Juliet has two sons and two daughters and are now grandparents of one.  Her daughters grew up involved in 4-H  and successfully participated in breed shows with the encouragement of her sister and brother-in-law, who breed, train, and show Morgan horses.  Ultimately, this led to her involvement within various provincial and national equine organizations.

Juliet has witnessed a tremendous growth and revitalization of the AEF since her initial participation.  The programs and opportunities now provided to members are outstanding, with credit for that going to a group of people who are committed to the promotion and welfare of all equines not only in Alberta but across the country.

Lew Hand

Lewis Hand

Individual Director

Born in Kelvington, SK and raised in Porcupine Plain, Lew began his working career with his Father in the bee industry, producing a quarter of a million pounds of honey a year. For several years he worked each spring in California packing bees for import to Canada. During this time, Lew also played Junior A hockey in Flin Flon and Winnipeg. Lew bought his first quarter section when he was fifteen years old and raised beef cattle with his Father.

As he was always interested in flying, Lew worked towards his pilot's license and after attaining it, he sold his share in the bee business and bought a partnership with Clem Gerwing, founder of Alberta Boot in Parkland Airways in Melfort, SK. Their charter was unique in that they could do almost anything from flight instruction to crop spraying. After selling his share to Clem, Lew moved on to instructing at the Regina Flying Club. During this time, he managed to obtain his instrument rating from the Winnipeg Flying Club and subsequently was hired by them as an instrument instructor. Lew was then hired by Air Canada, where he achieved his promotion to Captain in five years. Lew's career spanned thirty three years, ten of which he was flight training manager for the Boeing 727 where he was responsible for the training of pilots, instructors and various M.O.T. inspectors. He was also responsible for the check rides given to the Air Canada check pilots. In his capacity as flight manager, Lew was able to work with companies like Sperry, developing various programs. Lew had a marvelous career with Air Canada and retired in 1999 where upon he immediately obtained his Class 1 driver's license - just because he always wanted to drive a tractor to Vancouver via Golden. Lew has also owned his own recording studio, Hand Made Productions, and produced the work of various artists. After retirement, he was able to devote more time to horses and became a certified trainer and coach.

Over the years, Lew's volunteering activities have been varied, from the Shriner's Circuses in both Montreal and Calgary, various sailing races out of the Hudson Yacht Club, The Americade Touring Motorcycle Rallies in both Lake George, New York and Estes Park in Colorado, Expo Lachute Fair in Quebec, Bearspaw & District Agricultural Society in Cochrane, the Abbotsford Air show in Abbotsford, BC, The Rocky Air Show in RMH, AB, various amateur radio endeavors (VE6LLH), Trail Rider of the Canadian Rockies - former director and coordinator on rides. Many trade shows for various organizations. At present, Lew is also a director for the Ricinus Wooler Community Association, Bighorn Stampede Rodeo in Caroline.

Cindy Holyoak

Cindy Holyoak

Vice President

Although a "city kid," Cindy was attracted to horses at a very young age. Her family moved to Calgary from Winnipeg when she was 10 years old and the passion was born. The family home was in Acadia, which, at that time, was the "end" of the city and many small farms, with horses, of course, were nearby. Fortunately for Cindy, she was given numerous opportunities to work with and ride a great variety of horses.

Since this time, she has trained and shown with a number of horse breeds, including Appaloosas, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Arabians and a wonderful Sport Pony among some of the most noteworthy. Her philosophy has always been not to be concerned with what skin is over the horse, but what is in his soul.

Cindy has dabbled in Western and English disciplines, trail riding and, for the last fifteen years, has added carriage driving to the repertoire. Her kind and generous Arabian gelding, Adamas, is her present equine companion of eleven years and is eager to participate in whatever they want to do on any given day. Cindy and her husband have guided his training since buying him as a green five year old and he has proven to be an extremely dependable partner.

A major goal Cindy would love to achieve by serving on the AEF Board is to bring some of the fun back to sports through the AEF grassroots competition system: the Wild Rose Program. The very basic philosophy of the Wild Rose Program is to provide a less intimidating environment for those who wish to participate in showing for any number of reasons. There are those who wish to be part of the social aspect of showing and those who do not wish to feel competitive pressure but have set personal goals.

Cindy served as an Individual Director for the AEF in 2010 and when no director put their name forth for Chair of Sport in 2011, Cindy stepped up to the plate and took this role on. Cindy is seeking the position of Vice President whereby she can accept the responsibility to act as the president in his or her absence and support the president's role by ensuring board matters are handled properly, including preparation of pre-meeting materials, committee functioning, and recruitment and orientation of new board members.

Brian Irving

Brian Irving

Chair, Recreation

Brian has spent 17 years in various leadership positions with Scouts Canada, 3 years in girls softball, 3 years 4-H and 2 years Pony Club.  Other volunteer positions include HIAA and Wild Pink Yonder.  Brian is currently employed with Canada Post as a letter carrier.  Brian and his family have a "herd" of their own horses used for trail riding, amateur penning and sorting, 4-H, Pony Club, cattle drives and gymkhanas - with plans to take up driving as well.  Brian has attended many horse related conferences including, Owners and Breeders, Stable Owners and Mane Event.

Brian served as the Chair of Recreation for the AEF in 2011 and is again seeking this position for 2012 as he is passionate about using horses for fun and pleasure in many different areas.  During 2011 as the Chair of Recreation, Brian encouraged new recreational groups and their members to join the AEF.  He provided support to several trail projects throughout the province by attending meetings, showing up to dig dirt for a Trail Upgrade in Bragg Creek and by providing regular reports to the AEF board.  Brian is also the chairperson of the first ever AEF Fundraising Trail Ride to be held this September.

Brian's diverse interests are suited towards helping AEF Recreation grow, develop and advertise how much you can do with your horse.  Considering the different backgrounds of so many horse owners, he wishes to work towards the expansion of AEF membership, trail database and the Trail Supporter Program.

Brian's family has strong ties to their local horse community.  Cindy, his wife, is a certified Equine First Aid instructor and fellow rider.  His youngest daughter is currently involved in 4H and will attend Olds College in the Vet Tech program this fall.  Brian is also a Level 3 EAL facilitator, a program that utilizes horses as learning partners.

Carina Maitland-Smith

Carina (Kippy)

Maitland-Smith

Vice President

Kippy has ridden all her life: fox hunting, Pony Club, evented to national level.  Kippy and her husband had a Polled Hereford herd of 100 cows before retiring to start a commercial boarding and teaching stable.  After her husband died she sold the stable and now has a tack shop in Rocky Mountain House supplying all breeds and most disciplines.  Kippy has been a director of the AEF for several years and was briefly a director on EC's board for Recreation.  Kippy was a 4-H leader for 16 years and still volunteers for them.  She also volunteers for Further Education teaching English as a second language and last year helped locally with the Wild Pink Yonder Ride for Cancer.  She is a Pony Club National Examiner, gives clinics and judges.

Kippy was the Vice President in 2011 with many years experience on the AEF board as rep for 4-H, Chair of Education, on the High Performance Committee, and Co Chair of three AB Equestrian Games. She is rep to the AB Stables Association, on the Bylaw committee, Nominating committee and any other committees and jobs as needed, like the Olds College Equine Advisory Council.  She is also a volunteer for Rocky Ag Society; RMH horse show, UK Retraining of Racehorses, Pony Club and 4-H.

Kippy is widowed and lives in the middle of a horse pasture with 4 dogs and shares the farm with her son when he's not pipelining.  She pasture boards horses along with 17 of her own.  Kippy's interests are people, reading, riding, travelling, gardening and antiques like herself.

Pat McCormack

Patricia McCormack

Treasurer

Pat has served as a director on the AEF Board for three years. She joined the AEF Finance Committee in her second year and in her third year she became Treasurer. In Pat's non-horse life, she is a Professor at the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta. She has a great deal of experience with boards and committees, mostly related to her professional work.

Pat is asking to be reelected as Treasurer. AEF has gone through some difficult years financially, and with the involvement of the Finance committee, AEF is now becoming fiscally responsible again and working with a balanced budget. However, it still must address the considerable deficit that developed over the past three years and ensure that spending does not exceed revenue. The renewed relationship between the AEF and Equine Canada will factor into our financial picture in multiple ways, mostly still unknown. The AEF Board-approved 2012 budget has already had to be readjusted to accommodate required membership fees paid to Equine Canada. Pat is thankful for her experience over the past two years and ensures that she will bring continuity to this position and the overall financial management of the AEF and will continue to maintain fiscal transparency.

Pat is an anthropologist by training and has extensive museum experience. She began to ride when she started a project about horse and ranching traditions with First Nations in Southern Alberta. She rides a Spanish Barb mare, an all around horse that is comfortable with both English and Western Style. Pat continues to do serious dressage training as a lower level recreational rider.

Raylene McWade

Raylene McWade

Individual Director

Raylene has been involved in the Alberta horse industry for the last 30 plus years, largely in part due to her commitment to and support of the American Saddlebred Horse Association of Alberta. She has served on the ASHA Board of Directors in a variety of capacities over a number of years including the position of President and her current role as Treasurer. Raylene is currently the American Saddlebred Horse Association of Alberta representative to the AEF Board of Directors. She is a past World Cup Saddle Seat Equitation Team Canada member where she had the privilege of representing Canada at competitions in the United States (2004) and South Africa (2006, 2008). Raylene currently holds certification as an Instructor of Beginners in Saddle Seat and operates a lesson program just outside of Sylvan Lake where she resides with her husband Rob and daughter Samantha.

Raylene feels she can best serve the AEF as a director at large due to her understanding of the history of the AEF, Equine Canada and general Alberta horse industry as well as her own involvement with horses in Alberta. She has been involved with horses in Alberta as a lesson student, recreational rider, breeder, show competitor, international team member, parent of student/competitor and instructor. Raylene has an appreciation for all disciplines and levels of activity with horses within the province and applauds the efforts of AEF to be the voice for horses and those who love them.                 Julie Moorcroft

Individual Director

No Photo Submitted

Julie has been involved with horses since she was a child - more than 40 years.  She has shown, ridden or trained almost every breed except heavy horses and would do that if someone would let her.  She has been fortunate to be trained by some of Canada's and Europe's best instructors as a young rider and now in her 50's, she only just began to appreciate the quality of that education.

Julie has won multiple Provincial championships in multiple breeds and divisions and shown in both Canada and the United States.  She currently holds NCCP Level 2 coaching credentials, a National Bronze certification from CADORA and still rides, trains and competes.  Julie annually logs over 1,000 hours riding in one form or another.  She currently owns rides and trains, Holsteiners, Thoroughbreds, and Quarter Horses.  Julie is also a life member (over 30 years) of the Canadian Kennel Club and handles some of Canada's top show dogs in the ring. Julie has also been a General Performance judge for AEF for two years.

Julie has been a board member for 7 years with a one year break in 2010, her current position on the AEF Board is as a Director at Large and she is pleased to let her name stand for this position again.  It allows her the flexibility to participate where she feels her skills can be most useful to the Federation.

Trish Mrakawa

Trish Mrakawa

Chair, Education

Trish is the owner of Willow Grove Stable, which was established in 1982 and has been at its present location in DeWinton since 1984. She found it necessary to 'take the plunge' to own her own facility so that she could assure the proper care and well-being of her horses and students alike.  Her passion is coaching and it shows in the extensive program that has been put together at Willow Grove. While Willow Grove is a successful competitive stable, the program covers beginners to high performance as well as mentoring and business development for coaches.

Trish is a certified Coach with Equine Canada and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) having attained her Level 3 designation in Hunters, Jumpers and Equitation. She also holds a Pony Club "A" Certificate which brings with it a strong background in stable management and horsemanship. Believing that it is important to give back to the industry and sport, Trish works on several equestrian boards provincially and nationally. Trish is currently the Chairman for Coaching High Performance for Jump Canada and is the Master Evaluator for English Coaching for Alberta.

After successfully competing in both hunters and jumpers as a junior rider on the North American circuit, Trish switched to Three-Day Eventing and represented Alberta many times in the Young Riders Championships. Returning to her first love of show jumping, she began riding and teaching professionally in 1982.

In 2002, Trish became the Master Evaluator for English Coaching in Alberta. She was then appointed Chairman of the Equine Canada English Coaching Committee that has been instrumental in developing coaching programs for evaluating and training of coaches in Canada along with the Equine Canada 'Learn to Ride' program. Although remaining a member of this committee, Trish stepped aside as Chairman in 2009 to focus on her responsibilities for a position she received in 2008, Chairman of Coaching for Jump Canada. A Certified Mentor and Evaluator for the NCCP/Equine Canada Coaching Programs, she was accredited in 2008 by the Coaching Association of Canada as a Learning Facilitator for the NCCP/Equine Canada Equestrian Theory course.

With over 30 years of coaching experience in Alberta at both national and international competitions, she uses her experience to manage equestrian competitions at all levels with an emphasis on fun and education at boutique type shows. Presently, Trish is a director with Jump Alberta, Jump Canada, and the English Coaching Committee of Equine Canada.

Trish judges Equine Canada recognized hunter and jumper competitions and conducts riding clinics across Canada. She also manages several social media campaigns for organizations throughout Canada. In 1999, she expanded her vision of helping people by becoming involved in the wellness industry where she provides consulting for those who are interested in preventative and alternative methods of health and reducing the stress in their lives.

Most recently, in February 2012 at the Equine Canada National Convention, Trish was awarded as the recipient of the Coaching Excellence Award for Jump High Performance for over and above contribution to Equine Canada coaching program development.

Special note to AEF board and members: I feel with my strong background in program development for equestrians at all levels the Chair of Education would be an obvious choice. I plan to bring my knowledge and enthusiasm for horsemanship, skill development, business education and mentoring to this position.

Ken Schmuland

Individual Director

Ken makes his living in the horse industry as a trainer, but in a different way: working with both horse and human to create an environment where both can be successful in the relationship with each other. Ken is also involved extensively with 4-H at both the local and provincial levels.  He has also served on the AEF Board for several years as the representative for the 4-H Provincial Equine Advisory Committee.

Because of Ken's success with horses and humans in the relationship with each other by not allowing any grey areas, and allowing them to learn that there are consequences for their decisions; Ken feels that if the same mindset is taken into meetings, and if humans put their pride aside and learn to work together as a team, success will be achieved.

Ken is married with 4 children: 2 sons and 2 daughters. Horses are his passion, hobby and livelihood. He enjoys getting people to understand how smart the horse is and how little it takes to get a horse to do anything we won't.

Dena Squarebriggs

Dena Squarebriggs

Individual Director/Executive

Dena is a very motivated and high spirited individual (very much like her horse... ha ha). She enjoys meeting new people and being presented with new challenges! Dena currently works for her family's business, specializing in promotional products, silkscreening and embroidery. This line of work has given her a good sense of community and a beginner's knowledge of marketing as well. Dena also works part time for the Canmore Veterinary Hospital as a Veterinary Assistant for the last 4 years. 3 years ago, she participated in an Equine Body working course and always works to keep up on her knowledge of Anatomy. She has been working with and riding horses since she was a young girl. She spent many years in competitive show jumping as well as dressage. Since then, Dena now rides western pleasure with interests in competitive trail and various rodeo events.

Dena doesn't really have a specific 'desired' position in mind for the AEF Board; however, her interest in participating on the board lies merely in wanting to help out the wonderful organization. She feels that she can bring some new and fresh ideas to the table that will hopefully bring the objectives and strategies laid out in the business plan to reality.

Horses are her passion. A lot of her life revolves around them. Dena is currently the proud owner of one horse; a standardbred mare. She got her off the track and after she had been a brood mare for a few years. Dena was the first person to ever get on her back and their bond has been strong ever since. (Even through the not always fun 'training' period.) The relationship between horse and rider is something to be valued, cherished, respected and protected. "Our horses, whether we like it or not, reflect who we are. In teaching them, we learn a lot about ourselves." She will always cherish every bond she has had with her horses for they have all taught her something different about herself. Dena's wish is to be able to pass this knowledge on to others who may otherwise never receive it.
