The grant is based on total annual cash donations from individual Albertans that have been received by an eligible organization over a 12-month fiscal period. The grant can be used to support an organization's operations, programs and/or capital projects. The maximum grant available is $25,000 up to a maximum of $50,000 over three years. Another successful year for STARS!
The Millarville Ride for STARS was another success this year, celebrating its 19th year raising over $100,000, bringing the cumulative total to over an astonishing $900,000.
"Riders of all ages came out to support the cause and enjoy a day with family and friends," said Laura Palmer, Chair, STARS Millarville Ride Planning Committee, "It was great to see the variety of riders involved who represented a wide range of experience and skill, as well as the many families who took part." Many of the riders have personal connections to STARS, with family or friends who have been flown by STARS.
"The overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the community has been tremendous,' said Matt Reiser, STARS Event Manager. "Next year's event will celebrate the 20th anniversary, and we hope the event will reach the $1 million mark."
After a hearty breakfast 256 riders set out around noon for a breathtaking ride just west of Longview. The riders were treated to a BBQ dinner and a silent and live auction which included many generously donated items from businesses in the community.
Approximately 75 per cent of STARS funding comes from fundraising and community support. In 2010, STARS flew over 30 missions to the Millarville, Longview, Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Priddis and Bragg Creek communities. In total, STARS flew 1,453 times across Alberta and eastern British Columbia responding to a critically ill or injured patient.
STARS is a charitable non-profit organization that has responded to more than 21,000 emergencies since it began in 1985. STARS provides service 24 hours a day, seven days a week from bases in Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie. STARS unique model of community, corporate and government support allows the organization to continue innovating excellence in patient care.
