Stables and Clinicians are Invited to Partner with the AEF in Education

The AEF is exploring ways to bring educational clinics to local riders throughout Alberta.  The AEF welcomes the opportunity to partner on an existing clinic or to support a new clinic.  The AEF can help with developing ideas, registering participants, providing educational handouts, promoting the event and so on.   As a business member, your event will be publicized to thousands of AEF members.

Please contact Wendy in the AEF Office if you are interested in a mutually beneficial partnership in support of education.

Help the AEF enhance the well-being of Alberta equines and their riders!

June 3rd, 2011 Update on EHV-1 Conference Call

The EHV-1 situation in Alberta and Western Canada was discussed on a conference call this morning. Participants of the conference call included the Chief Provincial Veterinarian, members of Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, faculty from the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine and local equine practitioners. In addition, veterinarians from British Columbia and Saskatchewan were also in attendance.

To date the reported positive cases of nEHV-1 in Alberta are as follows:

  • One neurological case (now recovered) first found positive at the start of May
  • Three cases positive with mild respiratory signs/fever are all now recovered
  • Four PCR positive horses, showing no clinical signs
  • One new neurological case ,responding well to treatment, that attended cutting events in Alberta
  • One of the previously 'suspect' neurological cases in Northern Alberta that was at the cutting competition in Lloydminster (reported in last update).
  • To date suspect cases of nEHV-1 in Alberta are as follows:
  • One previously reported neurologic case. The mild neurological signs are almost resolved and the horse remains under quarantine. To date testing has been negative.
  • The second suspect with mild neurological signs in Northern Alberta that was at the cutting competition in Lloydminster (reported in last update) still remains in the suspect list.
  • New neurological suspect case from Central Alberta was euthanized due in part to complications with previous significant medical conditions. Testing is pending.
  • New neurological suspect case with mild fever from Central Alberta. Testing is pending.

The update in Saskatchewan, from the Prairie Diagnostic Services laboratory, indicated a single confirmed case that was present at the Lloydminster competition. Previously reported cases in February 2011, from this laboratory, are not considered part of the current EHV-1 outbreak.

The update in British Columbia, from the Animal Health Centre laboratory (Ministry of Agriculture), indicated two positive nEHV-1 cases confirmed through the laboratory. These cases had either direct or indirect contact with horses that were at the Ogden, Utah competition.

It appears all of the cases and suspected cases remain in horses associated with the cutting horse industry.

All other disciplines outside of the cutting industry continue at this time to be considered low risk. The decision to cancel competitions and shows in other disciplines should be made in partnership with their associated veterinarian to develop a risk assessment of each situation. Any time we travel to a competition where there is mixing of horses from many locations there is a low risk of transmitting infectious diseases.

Biosecurity measures should be followed. Excellent resources on biosecurity protocols for the equine community can be found on the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association website and the Alberta Equestrian Federation website.

The next conference call is scheduled for Wednesday June 8th, 2011. If any local veterinarians would like to participate they can contact the office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian for further information.

As always we will continue to update our information as it becomes available.

Biosecurity - Keeping your Horse Healthy

The Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF) and the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) have joined forces on a proactive approach to biosecurity in the horse industry.  A manual has been developed to address biosecurity principles and best practices for horse owners and caregivers.  The interactive manual, entitled Equine Biosecurity Principles and Best Practices was designed to inform horse owners and caregivers about biosecurity practices and to encourage consultation and discussion with veterinarians on disease control and prevention.  The Equine Biosecurity Principles and Best Practices manual will be used and distributed as the basis for equine biosecurity workshops that AEF is organizing and delivering throughout the province of Alberta.

Biosecurity includes the principles, actions, precautions and protocols that protect the health of livestock by preventing the transmission of disease through physical barriers, and hygiene practices. Biosecurity is protecting your animals, the farm community and the animal agriculture industry against disease causing agents.  It is a strategy of disease prevention; preventing introduction of disease and controlling and preventing recycling of disease within a herd, region, facility or community.

The AEF workshops are intended to bring biosecurity to a grassroots level.  The workshops will provide owners with necessary information and tools to develop a biosecurity program unique to their individual needs and risks in consultation with their veterinarian.  These resources were developed for all horse owners and custodians including AEF members, stable owners, users, recreational riders, serious competitors, show officials, administrators, and facility operators.  The intention is to affect incremental change in the equine industry, one horse at a time.

Check the AEF web site ( www.albertaequestrian.com) for information on biosecurity and details on the workshops.

As a horse owner or custodian, you are responsible for the care of your animal's health and well-being.  Disease risks and health hazards such as the recent EHV-1 outbreak indicate that we require effective risk and disease management strategies that should be an equal priority to riding in a safe and responsible manner.  This obligation extends to the equine community that surrounds your horse's home, but also encompasses any event or venue your horse may journey to.  Your actions or conversely lack of actions may have positive or negative effects - the choice is yours.

Funding for this project was made available through Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. Together, the governments of Canada and Alberta are investing $273 million over five years (2009-2013) for flexible and innovative programs for Alberta's agriculture industry.
