I hear it all the time - "we tried and it didn't work."
 
Why would a time-tested marketing tool not work for the client?  Usually, the answer lies in HOW the marketing tool was created and used.
Your wrote what?
In most cases, clients have the right concept - use an email, a postcard or a sign to reach their customers.  It's HOW the tool was designed and written that was ineffective.
 
Here are some examples I recently encountered:
  • A manufacturer wrote an introductory letter to their prospective clients.  Not a single benefit to the prospective customer was mentioned.  The letter went on for three paragraphs about how wonderful the company's products were.
  • What is the benefit?A sign in a store promoted a special offer for a new product.  The sign was placed on the wall immediately to the left of the entrance.  However, studies show that when most customers enter a store, they look right. 
  • An email sent to customers suggested that they renew their maintenance agreement for technology they owned.  The email was written with detailed technical jargon.  Customers were overwhelmed with the content and ignored the offer to renew the maintenance agreement.
We know that letters, signs and emails are effective marketing tools, but it's HOW they are used that will make the difference between being effective sales generators or inefficient time and money wasters.
 
When reviewing your prior marketing successes and failures, think about why it was ineffective, maybe it's HOW the tool was created and used.
