Five Streams Feeding the Watershed Report
Building a rain garden
Interlake rain garden

1. We are engaging students and combating water pollution by working with high schools to build demonstration rain gardens. We have installed our first two at Mercer Island and Interlake High Schools. Our next project is at Hazen High in Renton.

2. As we complete the pilot phase of the Report we are recruiting more high school students to get involved with the official Watershed Report this summer and fall.

Welcome Esther Gregory!

Esther Gregory in one of her creations
Esther recently joined the staff of FCRW as our Administrative Assistant. Esther studied Conservation and Environmental Biology at the University of Washington, where she did field work in the Cedar River Municipal Watershed. Her experience in the field drew her to our office. "I really loved seeing the little native flowers in bloom underneath the thick forest canopy. I learned how interconnected our region's ecology is."

Western Red Cedar

Spring Storm
last night
a wild and raging wind
ripped a towering tree
apart - seven feet above
where its thick truck emerged
from the ridge above the deep cedar creek.

fallen from the tall green canopy,
in its place now is
                    emptiness;
the clouds and the red-brown
water rushing by without remorse...

but I mourn the great tree;
fallen from the place it held
with quiet dignity for so long.
