We are delighted to report that a 250-word essay submitted by Joan Jacobs Brumberg about the genesis of Women Swimmin' is the Northeast regional winner of AARP's Win & Do Good Contest and Sweepstakes. Joan's story was one of only seven winners chosen from over 1,800 submissions nationwide. As her prize, AARP will donate $5,000 on Joan's behalf to Hospicare. Joan's essay is also in the running for the Grand Prize, an additional $10,000 for Hospicare! Here's how the Grand Prize selection works and how you can help: AARP has posted the stories of all seven regional winners on www.createthegood.org/sweepstakes/. Anyone visiting the site can vote for the story that most inspires them, up to once a day through November 18, 2011. Please vote - and help spread the word to encourage others to vote as well!

Integrative Therapies at Hospicare, Part 1: Introduction
By Jane Schantz, FNP"Integrative medicine" (IM) is a term that is gaining ever-greater prominence in our society. The most basic definition of IM is the practice of using mainstream (Western/allopathic) medicine alongside complementary therapies to maximize the benefit of both approaches. Ithaca itself has been ahead of the curve, with complementary therapies having been readily available in the community for decades.
But true IM goes beyond this definition to include a holistic approach to the patient - taking into account the physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of a person. Hospice is by its nature an integrative approach to health care. The hospice philosophy recognizes that all these elements must be considered in our effort to support people in making the most of the time they have at the end of life. Right from the initial nursing assessment we ask patients and family members not only about physical symptoms but also about their social and emotional well-being and spiritual concerns. All patients have available to them a team of providers that includes physicians, nurses and aides, social workers, pastoral care, and volunteers.
