Why I Will Swim in Women Swimmin'

This is going to be my first year swimming in Women Swimmin' and to say I am nervous is an understatement. I'm not the strongest swimmer and my technique could use some help, but I am at the pool training two or three times per week, and in just a month I've increased my ability to swim from just a few laps to over twenty. Every week I feel more confident that I will be able complete the swim.

You may wonder why I signed up for something I have no experience ever having done before. It seemed like such a good idea last February, when the swim was six months away. The day I decided to participate was February 12, the day of my friend Meghan Murphy's funeral. Meghan was just thirty when she passed away on February 5 from cancer. I learned at her funeral that she was a competitive swimmer, and decided on the spot to take on the challenge of Women Swimmin'.

Meditative Grief Walk and Talk
Hospicare Gardens in Summer
 Hospicare Gardens in Summer

Among the distinguishing features of the Nina K. Miller Hospicare Center are the beautiful natural surroundings -- the lush gardens and meandering paths. Hospicare recognizes the vital role nature can play in helping people through the grieving process.

This understanding has inspired the upcoming "Meditative Grief Walk and Talk" program. Led by Hospicare bereavement counselors, this will be a time to experience the beauty of Hospicare's gardens, meditate, and reflect on inspirational readings to help heal your grief.

As Hospicare bereavement counselor, Donna George, explains, "The Hospicare gardens offer a natural setting to support an array of emotions that are often experienced throughout the grief process, while immersed in nature's beauty."

The counselors will select an inspirational quote, piece of literature, or poem that integrates grief and loss in nature. This will provide an opportunity for grievers to gain insight and to reflect on their grief journey, as they immerse themselves in the beauty of Hospicare's natural surroundings.

There is empirical support for the efficacy of healing through nature. Tabitha Jayne, a noted grief counselor who has studied the work of Dr. Michael J. Cohen, explains: "Research has shown that, for those who suffer from mild to moderate depression, walking in nature is as effective as an antidepressant."

Event dates: July 13 and 27, August 10 and 24. Registration is not required, but prompt arrival is encouraged and appreciated. If weather is rainy, we will meet inside for expressive art activities focusing on grief. For questions, please contact Donna George at 607-272-0212 or dgeorge@hospicare.org.
