Clearing a path to a cure for ovarian cancer is possible because of people like you. The patients who received tumor "blueprints" at no cost to them can't thank you enough for what you did this year.  Your vision provided ovarian cancer patients with the opportunity to match their cancer to rationale treatment choices rather than the trial-and-error approach that is utilized today.  This was no baby step but a series of purposeful strides to find better treatment options for each patient on an individualized basis.

"If we build it, they will come," is not a metaphor but a reality. With your help, we built it (the ovarian blueprint capability) and more will come (patients and doctors).  In 2010, we expect a large inflow of patients as we build our awareness campaigns.

Personally, I find it unacceptable that less than 15% of recurrent ovarian cancer patients will be cured with additional treatment; less than 3% if they did not respond to the standard chemotherapy.   The Clearity Foundation needs your help to ensure that we have the funding to provide the profiles and the additional patient support as the medical community becomes more aware of our service.

Introducing our 2010 campaign

$2,010 will pay for blueprints for two patients in 2010.  Contribute $20.10 each month for ten months to support two patients and start clearing a path now to receive 2009 tax deductions.  One time contributions of $20.10 are strongly encouraged or any multiple of ten ($201.00, $2010, $20,100, etc) for individuals, groups, and sponsors are welcome.  All contributions are tax deductible.

Below is what you helped accomplish by supporting the Clearity Foundation in 2009!

Wishing you a happy holiday season,

Providing Tumor "Blueprints"

Our tumor blueprint service has now been used by 100 patients in 13 states.  At this year's Society of Gynecological Oncology meeting we asked ten of the top doctors in ovarian cancer treatment to help us refine our profiling panel and identify additional useful tests.  As a result, we now offer an expanded panel that corresponds to additional drugs.  Now our blueprint panel includes both "smart bomb" targets as well as chemotherapy targets.  Often times patients are given ineffective treatments because there is no way to determine if a drug will provide the desired efficacy.  Our goal is to change this!

Our database now has more than 100 blueprint profiles!  This was an important goal for 2009.  The larger the database, the more useful the information will be in helping identify better treatments to broader groups of ovarian cancer patients.  Take a look at the graphic below which shows the level of expression across multiple drug targets.  Each dot represents a patient datapoint on an individual target and shows that the expression across the ovarian population is highly variable.

Awareness and Action

The more doctors who know about our program, the more patients that can benefit from it.  We added doctors to our Scientific Advisory Board who are strong supporters of personalized medicine like Dr. Ursula Matulonis (view video) from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.  We hosted an educational event at the California Academy of Sciences that brought together a panel of scientists, physicians, and reimbursement specialists to discuss molecular profiling and to see the reality of personalized medicine in action today.  In her role as scientific advisor to Stand Up 2 Cancer, Clearity Founder Dr. Laura Shawver participated on a panel discussion at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit in September with Carly Fiorina, Elizabeth Edwards and Laura Ziskin.  The panel was moderated by Time Magazine correspondent Karen Tumulty (view video).   FOUNDATION IMAGE

We are very excited to announce that Mr. John Crawford has joined our Board of Directors and has been appointed our Chief Financial Officer.

 Brenda DurandPatient Advocacy

Our ability to communicate on a personal level with each patient and doctor is the real key to effective patient services. We thank Brenda Durand, RN, who has volunteered countless hours liasing with pathology labs, profiling labs, doctors, and patients to make obtaining a blueprint as smooth as possible.  It is our patients that inspire us to continue.  We know how difficult the choices are for treatment when ovarian cancer recurs after standard chemotherapy.  We are dedicated to making these choices more rational and individualized.  We want to hear from you and hear your suggestions, please e-mail us at info@clearityfoundation.org.  Like the blueprints we provide, we see each of you as unique so please tell us how we can help you better!
