Ladewig-Zinkgraf Post No. 243
40 Stafford St., P.O. Box 416
Plymouth, Wisconsin, 53073
FROM: Jim Riesenberg, POW/MIA Committee
TO: Media outlets of record (3-31-12)
SUBJECT: Prisoner of War Remembrance Day ceremony
Monday, April 9th is Prisoner of War Remembrance Day.
It marks the 70th anniversary of Major General Edward King's surrender of an estimated 60-70,000 combined American and Filipino troops to the Japanese military on the Philippine Island peninsula of Bataan.
Transporting the large numbers of captive troops was a logistical nightmare, so the Japanese forced the captives to march the 60 plus miles to their ultimate "home", Camp O'Donnell.
To those who survived this ordeal, it became known as the Bataan Death March. The courage and bravery of these men and women will be remembered in a brief ceremony on Monday morning.
Members of Ladewig Zinkgraf Post 243, American Legion, and World's Cheese Center Post 5612 Veterans of Foreign Wars, lead by their respective Commanders ( Bill Balke & Jake Henschel) will gather at 8AM at the Plymouth City Hall flag pole for a brief ceremony that will include reading of the Governor's proclamation, and hoisting of the black & white National League of Families POW/MIA flag.
