STORIES BEING CAPTURED THANKS TO ONE VOLUNTEER ~ KEVIN SOULE! |
|
Last issue we let Kevin tell his own story and this month we promised to tell you about the VERY special one of a kind volunteer project that Kevin is doing.
This story is about the Werner family that owned the local paper, The Sheboygan Press and a 'war to end all wars'. World War II called upon many families to share their fathers, uncles, sons, cousins to fight the fight. After all didn't Uncle Sam point at them and say "I want you"? How could families say no; but how could families keep track of their loved ones. Well, the Werners felt they had a way to help. They began to publish every story of a young man off to boot camp, sent to the front, recognized for a job well done, and unfortunately the ultimate sacrifice ~ their life for their country.
But, they even took it a step further, the story is told that they had a staff person record in a card file - a separate card for each soldier - EVERY time a soldier was mentioned in the newspaper.
This writer has seen the card file and looked up her father, now deceased - but the record shows every time her father was mentioned in the paper in relationship to his service to his country. The record, states the date of the issue of that paper .... the page .... the column .... and a brief review of what was mentioned.
Why is that so precious? Because all of the issues of The Sheboygan Press are available on line from Mead Library, making it possible to look up each soldier's stories.
Now what WINSA's volunteer, Kevin Soule is doing is creating a digital database of the card file -- a dozen boxes each the size of a shoe box. This digital file will be given to Mead Library and available to view at the museum; making those personal stories available to be tracked forever.
When you meet Kevin - please, make sure to say THANK YOU.
