Sing 'n Speak Spanish
Article Subheadin
Dear Parents of Holmes Elementary,
Sing 'n Speak Spanish® makes learning conversational Spanish easy and fun.  It carries high educational goals but is playful - with songs, humor, visuals, interactive puppetry, games, role-playing, and a strong emphasis on the use of vocabulary in conversation.  Elementary school children are at their linguistic best.  There is no better time to lay the foundation for advanced learning and fluency.

The Sing 'n Speak Spanish program is a five year Spanish curriculum for elementary aged students.  Classes take place once a week throughout the school year. To offer the higher levels of Spanish in subsequent years, it is necessary to have good enrollment in the Year 1 Spanish classes.  Our minimum and maximum enrollments are 6 and 12 students, respectively. This is our third year offering Sing 'n Speak Spanish at Holmes Elementary.  Our enrollment at Holmes has been too low to offer the higher levels of the Sing 'n Speak Spanish program.  This three-question survey is designed to determine if there is sufficient interest in the Spanish program to continue at Holmes Elementary and whether it makes more sense to offer the classes before or after school.

Clairemont High wins AP Biology Bowl
L Article Subheading
The team from Clairemont narrowly edged out teams from La Jolla and Serra high schools to claim victory at the 3rd Annual Advanced Placement Biology Bowl held recently at Serra High.  Clairemont High's team was coached by Jason Kammerer.

The academic bowl competition prepares students for the Advanced Pla
cement biology examination. Comprised of 12 total rounds of competition, each round tests students' knowledge of the eight major themes to be tested on the AP exam, including biochemistry, cell biology, cell division, evolution, anatomy and physiology and genetics.

More than 130 students, parents, and teachers attended the event. Superintendent Bill Kowba and Board Trustees Kevin Beiser and Richard Barrera participated in the welcoming ceremony. Superintendent Kowba encouraged all participants to do their very best in the competition and on the exam.

The AP Biology Bowl was established in 2010 by Serra High's Dr. Ericka Senegar-Mitchell. More than 12 high schools have participated since the bowl began three years ago.

Parent feedback: any PTA or eblast related questions or concerns can be sent to either holmespta@yahoo.com or David Zugman. We welcome your input.
