William Donald Schaefer

November 2, 1921 - April 18, 2011

William Donald Schaefer
Dear Friends:

On Monday, April 18, the City of Baltimore lost one of her greatest sons, William Donald Schaefer. As a member of the City Council, City Council President, Mayor, Governor, and as State Comptroller, he personally touched the lives of millions of people as he worked to make Baltimore and Maryland stronger and more prosperous. In the days since his passing, we have had the opportunity to reflect on his influence on the city we love.

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Howard Peters Rawlings, William Donald SchaeferI was born in 1970, and the following year William Donald Schaefer became Mayor of Baltimore. For me, and for an entire generation of residents, he set the standard for what it means to be the Mayor of an American City. He insisted on being an honest, no-nonsense leader who celebrated our City's strengths while implementing a vision for the future, always believing that Baltimore's best days are ahead. Under his leadership, Baltimore's Inner Harbor was transformed into an economic engine for the City and a source of great pride for citizens in every neighborhood. Mayor Schaefer was more than a visionary leader, he was Baltimore's greatest cheerleader.

Since becoming Mayor, I have come to understand what Mayor Schaefer meant when he said that being Mayor of Baltimore is the greatest job he ever had. As Mayor, you have an opportunity to be close to the people you serve and make a real difference for people in the day-to-day governing of the City. Every Baltimore Mayor since William Donald Schaefer-and for generations to come-walks into office knowing that they have to live up to an impossible standard: do it now!

On Monday, April 25, 2011, William Donald Schaefer will arrive at City Hall for one last visit. His body will lie in state on April 25 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and on April 26 from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. I urge all residents, city employees, and friends of the city to take the opportunity to pay their final respects to one of the greatest mayors in American history.
Sincerely,

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
Mayor, City of Baltimore

Planning Department Annual Report

Planning Highlights 2010 is a summary of activities and initiatives conducted by the City of Baltimore Department of Planning over the last year. Planning in Baltimore has a long and proud history of innovation, strategic thinking, and customer service. That spirit continues to flourish as our City strives onward towards growth and prosperity, despite recent economic challenges. View the report here.

Let's Talk: 2011 Citizen Survey

Through the end of May, the City of Baltimore is surveying residents about their satisfaction with City services. City departments use survey results to help them deliver services more effectively. A diverse cross-section of approximately 1,800 randomly selected residents will complete a telephone survey. If you are contacted to participate in the survey, please take a few minutes to provide your honest opinions about how we're doing in Baltimore. This year, there's also a separate online survey available.
