Dear Friends:

This year, the City of Baltimore is partnering with community leaders and small business owners to hold the 6th annual Miracle on Main Streets citywide holiday event. Throughout the month of December, Miracle on Main Streets encourages people in and around Baltimore to explore the city's historic neighborhoods while supporting local businesses.

During Miracle on Main Streets, people are encouraged to stroll city streets, enjoy free holiday festivities, and park for free while searching for the perfect gift at unique shops in Baltimore's ten Main Streets neighborhoods-Belair-Edison, Brooklyn, East Monument Street, Federal Hill, Fell's Point, Hamilton-Lauraville, Highlandtown, Pennsylvania Avenue, Pigtown, and Waverly.

Baltimore's Main Street districts offer more than just an opportunity to cross items off your shopping list-they offer you a shopping experience you cannot get anywhere else. Where else but Baltimore could you roller skate with Santa, eat cookies with the Santa Pig, or enjoy Moonlight Madness in Federal Hill?

Special events and promotions take place throughout the month in each neighborhood. Over 50 free activities and events will take place in the 10 neighborhoods, including tree lightings, concerts, parades, Santa visits, and much more. Thanks to a partnership with BDC, Baltimore's Parking Authority, and the Department of Transportation, street meters will be bagged for free parking on all 10 Main Streets every weekend through Christmas.

This weekend, the Fell's Point Main Street will kick-off the Holiday Season with the arrival of Santa Claus by tugboat. It is part of the 7th annual "Olde Tyme Christmas" in Fell's Point, which includes a breakfast with St. Nick, an eggnog contest, and horse-drawn sleigh rides. In the Hamilton-Lauraville Main Street, the 3rd Annual "Holidays on Harford" welcomes people with caroling, holiday crafts, and a visit from Santa.

On Saturday, I will join people in Highlandtown to celebrate the great Baltimore tradition of Holiday Train Gardens. I am excited to join people who are shopping in one of Baltimore's most unique communities as we light the Highlandtown Christmas tree.

For a complete schedule of events taking place this weekend and throughout the month, go to www.MiracleOnMainStreets.com.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at my website or by email at mayor@baltimorecity.gov. You can also follow the Mayor's Office and be a part of the conversation on Twitter.
Sincerely,

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
Mayor, City of Baltimore

Point-In-Time "Homeless Census" Volunteers Needed

The Mayor's Office of Human Services, Homeless Services Program, in partnership with Morgan State University, is conducting its bi-annual Point-in-Time, a federally mandated project that aims to obtain an accurate count of homeless persons. The results of the census directly affect funding for homeless outreach, housing, and service programs and guides federal and local homeless policy. Volunteers are needed to conduct surveys in the early morning hours of January 25, between 1:00 am and 6:00 am. Click here to register for a volunteer training. To find out more about the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness in Baltimore, go to www.endinten.org.

Don't Wait: Get Your Flu Shot Today!

Flu season is here. The most effective way to protect yourself, your family, and your friends from influenza is to get vaccinated. Each flu season, the Baltimore City Health Department provides free vaccinations at clinics across the city. Call 311 or visit the Health Department Website to find the clinic nearest you.

Other, simple ways to avoid the flu and stay healthy this fall:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, scrubbing vigorously for 20 seconds.
  • Do not share personal items like drinks, food, or unwashed utensils.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or by using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is not available.

If someone in your household becomes sick and develops a fever, the person should stay home until they are fever-free for 24 hours. Staying home when sick with flu will reduce the number of others who may get sick.
