This Month's Featured Restaurant | |
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of last week's tragedy at Fort Hood. It is because of brave men and women like the ones who were senselessly killed, that we can enjoy the freedoms of this country. There is no doubt it will take time for their tight knit community to heal. Its resurgence will be a symbol of the fortitude and resilience of our great nation.
Every year on Veteran's Day I have the honor of recognizing men and women such as these from Baltimore City who served-and continue to serve-our country. As a citizen, and as a Mayor, I thank all of you who have volunteered to protect our nation and the promise it holds. This includes our firemen and policemen for risking their lives everyday to protect the citizens of Baltimore City.
On Veteran's Day this year, I was joined by close to 200 Baltimore City young men and women serving in our ROTC to commemorate our veterans. As we recognized the sacrifice of our former and current servicemen and women, these young people served as a reminder of why our liberty and freedom are worth fighting for.
I was also joined by City Council President Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Comptroller Joan Pratt, Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke, Councilman Robert Curran, Councilwoman Rochelle "Rikki" Spector, Councilman Bill Henry, Delegate Melvin Stukes and Mayor Jeffrey Slavin of Somerset, Maryland to swear in members of the newly formed Veterans Commission.
This new commission will serve as a voice for veterans who live in the City and enable us to better address their needs. I want to thank former State Delegate Clarence "Tiger" Davis for agreeing to be the Commission's first Chair and the members of the City Council for recognizing its importance. It is our responsibility, as people who enjoy the freedoms which our servicemen and women fight for on our behalf, to remember the price we pay for our liberty.
We must also pray for those veterans who are living on the margins, and who need our help the most. In our City, the Baltimore Station and Maryland Center for Veterans Education and Training shelters serve hundreds of veterans with supportive services. These are men and women who have fallen on hard times. At these shelters, they receive emergency and transitional housing, job training and other support vital to them getting back on their feet. As we renew our commitment to veterans with the newly formed Veteran's Commission, it is vital that we remember those in need and most vulnerable. We owe it to them to be there in their hour of need.
Last, I want to thank the families of our veterans and those currently serving. Having a loved one in uniform requires sacrifice. We live in a country where great things are possible. Your courage and strength is the foundation of what ties us all together as Americans: our democracy and freedom.
Sincerely,
Sheila Dixon Mayor, Baltimore |

Census Workshop
Saturday, December 5, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.Morgan State University. The U.S Bureau of Census has designated parts of Maryland including Baltimore City as extremely hard-to-count areas. Each family of four undercounted, amounts to approximately $4000 per year and $40,000 in loss of federal funds over the ten-year span following the Census count. Our communities, city and state cannot afford to lose this kind of $$$ during the current economic crisis. Join us for a workshop to explore efforts by federal, state and local officials to reduce the undercount. |

Looking for a better way to get around downtown? A brand-new transportation system is coming to the downtown area soon. To better connect Baltimore residents, workers, businesses, and visitors, twenty-one hybrid EcoSaver IV buses will circulate on three downtown routes, seven days a week-with no fare or boarding fee. The circulator routes will run south to north from the Inner Harbor Visitor Center to Penn Station, and east to west from Harbor East to the B&O Railroad Museum. With buses arriving approximately every ten minutes, the circulator system is planned to connect with Amtrak, MARC, Light Rail, Metro Subway, MTA bus lines, two water connectors (Maritime Park to Tide Point and Canton Waterfront Park to Tide Point), and parking garages located on the fringes of downtown.
