This Month's Featured Restaurant | |
This week I had the true honor of participating in a ceremony to unveil the William Donald Schaefer Sculpture Garden at the Inner Harbor and to celebrate his 88th birthday. Baltimore has had some truly courageous, powerful leaders grace the steps of City Hall. William Donald Schaefer's sixteen years as Mayor of our City will forever stand out as a time where the bar was raised and the meaning of leadership redefined. His larger than life personality is unmatched. I am thankful to have the opportunity to follow the trail these giant footsteps have left behind.
William Donald Schaefer has a passion for people. Whether it is a resident of Baltimore that is down on their luck or a staff member that happens to run across his path, he has the uncanny ability to see one's greatest potential and is relentless about ensuring he reaches that potential. His passion for the City of Baltimore is no different. He once said, "My faith in our City is realistic...my pride in our City is justified." Way before many of us could even imagine, Schaefer had faith in what Baltimore is today and the Baltimore that is still to come. His vision of transforming Baltimore's Inner Harbor from a retired industrial site into a tourist attraction sparked a renaissance in the city. His determination to cease every opportunity and "get it done now" has left an indelible mark on not only our skyline but also our hearts. On Monday, I joined some of the many, many people he has touched to commemorate all of his accomplishments. Far too often, we are not able to share the flowers of appreciation while the great men and women in our lives are able to enjoy them. We were very fortunate to have an opportunity to show such love and appreciation for Governor Schaefer on his 88th birthday. Thanks to the generosity of Willard Hackerman, this sculpture is going to be a permanent reminder; not only of the good Governor Schaefer achieved in his career as a public servant, but as a cheerleader with a large heart for the people of this city. As we press forward through our current challenges, I urge us all to share in Governor Schaefer's unrelenting optimism for Baltimore and its people. Understand that our "faith in our City is realistic". Though the times ahead will be challenging, we will yet again soar to new heights.
Sincerely,
Sheila Dixon Mayor, Baltimore |

Census Workshop
Saturday, December 5, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.Morgan State University. The U.S Bureau of Census has designated parts of Maryland including Baltimore City as extremely hard-to-count areas. Each family of four undercounted, amounts to approximately $4000 per year and $40,000 in loss of federal funds over the ten-year span following the Census count. Our communities, city and state cannot afford to lose this kind of $$$ during the current economic crisis. Join us for a workshop to explore efforts by federal, state and local officials to reduce the undercount. |
