"Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal." - Martin Luther King Jr.
To have peace as a community, we must fight for the prosperity of our youth. This is not a distant goal. Peace is a reality we have the ability and the resources to achieve now. Yesterday I had the honor of launching PEACE Baltimore, an initiative targeted toward our youth ages 12-17 to educate them about all of the resources our City has to enable them to elect a positive path.
We don't want our youth to be idle this summer. They are bright and creative. As parents and as a community, we must provide positive ways to channel their energy and their talents. The purpose of PEACE (Pledge to Engage in Actions that are Considerate of Everyone) Baltimore is to highlight the many activities offered by the Department of Recreation and Parks and other organizations for our young people. It will also create fun, safe, social activities sponsored by the Mayor's Office, Department of Recreation and Parks, Police Department and various community and business partners for our youth to participate in.
At the launch event, the City partnered with ESPN Zone to provide free interactive games for kids that signed the PEACE Baltimore pledge. They were also given the ability to receive information about programs offered by the Department of Recreation and Parks and various other programs such as Outward Bound. Other planned events include "late skate", video game competitions and basketball tournaments.
The initiative is a unified effort created by the City of Baltimore and various community and business partners including Radio One, Waterfront Partnership, Downtown Partnership, MTA, BACVA, Downtown Locker Room, General Growth Properties, and the Cordish Company. This is an example of what happens when we all-government, non-profits, community groups, businesses- rally together to make youth a priority. I encourage every young person to attend the PEACE Baltimore events, sign the pledge and socialize with other teenagers from across Baltimore City. Our next event is next Thursday, July 2nd, at Shake and Bake Family Fun Center, 1601 Pennsylvania, Baltimore, MD, 21217 from 8pm-11pm. I would also encourage all business and community partners to consider how you can participate. To have peace as a community, we ALL must fight for the prosperity of our young people. Sheila Dixon Mayor, Baltimore |

The circulator routes will run south to north from the Inner Harbor Visitor Center to Penn Station, and east to west from Harbor East to the B&O Railroad Museum.
