Madagascar Revisited

poacher_with_shells
A poacher stands before a pig sty filled with the remains of Radiated tortoises.

For the second time in 6 months, Rick Hudson (TSA) and Christina Castellano (The Orianne Society) teamed up to work in the south of Madagascar, continuing to look for solutions to the ongoing Radiated tortoise crisis. They went prepared this time with a highly capable field crew, the Mozambique-based Moz Images, consisting of cameraman Chris Scarffe and photo-journalist Aaron Gekoski.  Moz Images specializes in underwater photography but does land-based projects too, and they are highly adept at exposing various wildlife issues globally. The film that they were working on during this trip will be a short six-minute video, in three languages that will be distributed to expose the Radiated tortoise tragedy internationally.

In addition to capturing the tortoise crisis on film, they were also in Madagascar to release a group of 148 young Radiated tortoises that were confiscated recently at the Ivato airport in Antananarivo, in route to Asia. Rafetus Season Ends in Disappointment

Rafetus_nestingThe fourth season for the Rafetus breeding project has come to an end, without the results that we were all hoping for. It seems that out of the 188 eggs laid, none were actually fertilized. This has put all of us on the project in a bit of a predicament wondering how to proceed next year (note I said how not if. There is no question in any of our minds that the project will continue, so long as we have these individuals and if there's the possibility of other individuals out in the wild).

However, despite the fact that we didn't get any Rafetus hatchlings, strides were still made and questions answered. Click here to read the full story.

Tryon Library Sales Continue

Recently, well-known herpetologist Bern Tryon passed away. Before his death, Bern thought it would be nice if his herpetological library could be sold with ALL the proceeds going to a fund that would provide money each year for field work on the southern populations of the endangered Bog Turtle. Bern had a wonderful library collection of over 500 titles that he has donated to the TSA for Bog Turtle conservation efforts.

The TSA agreed to maintain and administer the funds, and Frank Slavens (TSA Board) generously volunteered to list and sell the library. Sales of the collection were launched in August and have been going very well. However, the collection is very large and there are still lots of great titles available for purchase. All money collected from the sale of the library will go directly to the TSA Bern Tryon Southern Bog Turtle Fund. Any additional donations to this Bog Turtle fund are also welcome. Please click here for more information or to peruse the catalog.
