John L Behler Turtle Conservation Award 2009

gerald_kuchlingDr. Gerald Kuchling was named the recipient of the 2009 Behler Award at our recent symposium in St. Louis, Missouri. Please click here to read the full release and learn more about his many accomplishments.

A life-long turtle researcher, Dr. Kuchling is pictured here with a western swamp turtle (Pseudemydura umbrina), a species that he brought back from the brink of extinction almost single-handedly.

The award honors the memory of John L. Behler, previous Chair of the Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group and Curator of Herpetology at the Bronx Zoo, Wildlife Conservation Society.

Rafetus Barrier Construction Begins!

rafetus_investigating_trash
Construction has begun on the barrier around the Rafetus pond at the Suzhou Zoo in China (see the August 14 e-newsletter for more details). Lu Shunqing spoke with the zoo's director yesterday who confirmed that the base is complete at the glass will be inserted within the next few days!

We hope to have images to share with you soon, but in the meantime we'd like to thank everyone who has contributed thus far to this critical project. Hopefully, the barrier will cut down on the amount of trash (see image) thrown into the small pond where these rarest of animals are kept.
