iCivics Educational Online Game

The National Association of Counties, together with iCivics, has created an online game, "Counties Work," to educate students, grades 6 through 12, about the important role and functions of county government.

iCivics is the vision of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to help students get information and tools for civic participation, and provide teachers materials and support. In NACo's Counties Work game, students can make decisions to make their community a better place to live and decide on programs and services that affect everyone. The game is a fun and informative tool for understanding the role of local government.

Deer Grove East Update

It has been a busy late winter, spring, and early summer at Deer Grove East, as the five-year restoration continues.   Below is an update on the restoration work from Joe Roth, the Director of Restoration Programs at Openlands:

In the spring, Open Lands staff were able to get most of the necessary areas burned. Invasive species and woody resprout control will be ongoing through out the growing season. The initial planting of native seed and plugs in the woodland and prairie portions of the project area was completed last month. The prairie portion of the restoration area will be mowed at least once this summer to help with the establishment of the native seeding.

The Forest Preserve District Board approved an award of contract for repaving of the asphalt trail on the east side of Deer Grove this spring. The FPD and Openlands have been working closely together on details. As a part of the repaving, select pipes conducting surface water under the paved trail will be replaced. An additional pipe will be added under the trail between wetlands 6 and 7 to help keep water off of the trail during significant storm events.

STAR Reports

In February of this year, Commissioner Goslin sponsored legislation requiring that budgeting be linked to performance indicators.   Last month, President Preckwinkle released the first quarterly performance management report from Set Targets, Achieve Results (STAR), the program inspired by this legislation.

STAR performance management is an important new tool for lowering the cost of government, creating efficiencies and improving services.  Agencies and departments have received training and are required to set clear, measurable goals.  Data from STAR will be used to drive the budget process, structure government operations and create an improved forum for public feedback on county operations.

Performance data and the accompanying reports will be available online for any who wish to view it.  To download a full copy of the July 2011 report, visit the County's performance management center at www.cookcountyil.gov/STAR.  The report is an interesting glimpse into county operations and will preview the types of targets departments and agencies will be reach in the coming year.
