COOK COUNTY EMERGENCY NUMBERS 


As you may be aware, a blizzard warning is in effect for Cook County from 3PM today until 3PM Wednesday.  Below are the relevant hotline numbers for Cook County resources:

 

Cook County Highway Department (708) 485-7130

 

Cook County Sheriff's Police (708) 865-4700

 

Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM)  (312) 603-8180  

 

The DHSEM Emergency Operations Center will operate 24 hours for the duration of the winter weather event.

2011 County Executive Budget Recommendation
At this morning's Special Meeting of the Cook County Board, President Preckwinkle presented her 2011 budget proposal for the county.  As budget  meetings proceed this month, Commissioner Goslin remains committed to supporting efficiency in county government and implementing a full repeal of the sales tax increase.

 
Highlights from FY2011 Executive Budget Recommendation include:
  • Addresses $487 million deficit resulting from the partial repeal of the sales tax increase
  • Average of 15% reduction in general and special fund operations for the entire county.  (The State's Attorney and Public Defender cut 10% each, the Sheriff cut 12% and Health & Hospitals System cut 21%)
  • $19 million in new funds through revenue initiatives including pursuing unpaid taxes, providing judicial asset sale services for new revenue and increasing minor service fees to match costs
  • $60 million through restructuring outstanding debt obligations
Other features of President Preckwinkle's proposal for the coming year include:
  • Comprehensive desk audit of all county positions
  • Improving budget controls to prevent overspending
  • Implementing performance measure requirements for all county agencies and departments

County Budget Public Hearings
There will be four public hearings for the Cook County Budget. The two closest to the 14th District will be:

Thursday, February 10th at 6:30 P.M. at the Second District Courthouse, 5600 Old Orchard Rd, Conference Room 201, Skokie, IL

 

Wednesday February 16th at 10:00 A.M. at the County Board Room, 118 N Clark St, Rm 569, Chicago, IL


If you wish to testify at these meetings, you can give your name and the name of any organization you are representing to the Secretary to the Board by phone at (312) 603-6127. You can also register at any of the locations at the time of the meeting.

Botanic Garden Summer Internship
Appplications are now available for the John H. Stroger, Jr. internship program at the Chicago Botanic Garden.  This summer internship program is designed to introduce early career or college students to professional experiences in the not-for-profit sector--the size and complexity of the Chicago Botanic Garden affords opportunities in a wide variety of fields including education, visitor services and horticulture.

Internships will take place from June 13th through August 5, 2011.  Cook County residents age 18-21 can apply for this paid internship through their Cook County Commissioner.

  • Approved completion of construction resolution for Ela Road, Central Road to 600 Feet North of Freeman Road, Palatine Road to Dundee Road; andU.S. 14 to Lake-Cook Roadin the Villages of Barrington, Hoffman Estates and Inverness.  Final Cost:  $3,524,092.00 (21% below the construction contract bid amount)
  • Approved Bid Award for Lake-Cook Road,East of Wilmot Road to Pfingsten Road in theVillage of Deerfield
