Wilke Road Speed Limit
Over the past few years, serious safety concerns have arisen from residents regarding an approximately one-mile stretch of Wilke Road just north of Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights and Palatine.  My office has coordinated several contacts between area residents and the Cook County Highway Department to help resolve these concerns.

Aside from signage changes and various maintenance requests, the major issue has remained the speed limit on this stretch of Wilke Road.  Residents requested that the speed limit be lowered, due to the fact that it is a residential area with high pedestrian traffic.  The Highway Department maintained that, with a current speed limit of 35mph and a prevailing average speed of over 40, the issue was really enforcement by the municipal police departments.

As a result of persistent discussions and site visits, the Highway Department has agreed to a one-year trial, lowering the speed limit from 35 to 30mph on Wilke Road, from Northwest Highway to 0.9 miles north.  Following the trial period, they will review vehicle speeds and crash data to re-evaluate the appropriate speed limit.

This new, lowered speed limit was approved by the county board today, and the necessary signage will be updated in the next 1-2 weeks.
