Flood Victim Grant Seminar
Commissioner Goslin is hosting an information session for residents to learn about funds available through the Cook County Disaster Grant to assist businesses, families and individuals impacted by the severe storms and flooding in September and October of 2008.

Wednesday, June 23rd from 6pm - 9pm
Glenview Police Department Community Room

At this session, residents will learn how to qualify for the funds, and will also be able to process their applications on-site. $10.3 million in Grant Funds are available to help residents with  unresolved property repairs, mold remediation and other flood-related issues.  (The grant cannot be used to reimburse individuals for fixing their homes or for any expenses they incurred and paid for themselves).

Please spread the word to friends and neighbors affected by the flood!
Facility Green Teams
I introduced legislation today to create a "Green Team" for every county facility.  In order to realize the full potential of energy conservation and waste reduction, we need to use a more ground-level approach to promote environmental operations and ensure a greener Cook County

While county-wide ordinances and policies provide a useful framework for environmental practices, it is difficult to anticipate and address the potential obstacles involved in implementation uniformly throughout county facilities.  These teams will be better able to coordinate and implement  sustainable practices to ensure county-wide policies are followed and promote activities such as recycling and paper reduction within facilities.

Facility-level organization will also provide an important framework to understanding obstacles to and considerations necessary for future county-wide green initiatives.

This resolution was referred to the Environmental Control Committee
New Homeland Security and Emergency Management Committee
The Cook County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department (CCHSEM) is charged with overseeing the use of  federal funds in suburban Cook County and providing a county-wide emergency management system that integrates available first responders, their departments and resources.

These significant responsibilities and the recent troubling contract awards prompted my proposal to create a County Board Committee to help oversee these activities, which was approved at today's Board Meeting.

As Vice-Chair of the newly formed Committee for Homeland Security and Emergency Management, I am dedicated to ensuring the responsible and effective use of taxpayer money as the CCHSEM Department works to fulfill its responsibilities to improve our emergency management system and preparedness capabilities.
Red Light Cameras
The amendment I sponsored allowing municipalities to opt out of the county red light cameras for intersections within their incorporated boundaries was approved by the County Board today.

Many suburban municipalities expressed serious concern over the recent contract to install red light cameras in suburban Cook County, and part of being good neighbors with our municipal partners is not only listening to their concerns, but soliciting their input before such action is taken.

Consulting our local governments is essential to providing good service to county residents.  Cook County policies and programs have impact on local communities, and this is especially true for an issue such as this, where programs have effect within their municipal boundaries and in many cases have already been addressed by local governments.

I am against the installation of red-light cameras at the county, and I will continue to support legislation which provides for local input on this and other county programs.
