Independent County Health System Now Permanent

Since introducing legislation earlier this year, Commissioner Goslin has worked hard to gather bipartisan support to make the independent Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) Board permanent.  Commissioner Goslin's consensus-building efforts paid off in a big way this week as this historic measure was overwhelmingly approved, despite encountering serious resistance from interested parties who wanted to simply extend the sunset deadline, and undermine the CCHHS Board's ability to recruit qualified management staff and make the necessary, but unpopular decisions looming on the horizon.

Since its creation, the CCHHS Board has done a tremendous job in restructuring a vastly mismanaged system to eliminate 1400 full-time positions as well as implement audit recommendations and a variety of other cost-cutting measures.  Making the CCHHS Board permanent allows them to continue their work to increase efficiency, improve services and eliminate unnecessary costs to taxpayers without being inhibited by political meddling.

In the weeks and months ahead, Commissioner Goslin will introduce further amendments to establish a fair and responsible process for replacing  CCHHS Board members and ensure real autonomy in decision-making for the independent governing body.
Flood Victim Day - Disaster Grant Information Session
Commissioner Goslin is hosting an information session for residents to learn about funds available through the Cook County Disaster Grant to assist businesses, families and individuals impacted by the severe storms and flooding in September and October of 2008.

The information session will be held at the Glenview Police Department Community Room  on Wednesday, June 23rd from 6pm - 9pm.

At this session, residents will learn how to qualify for the funds, and will also be able to process their applications on-site. $10.3 million in Grant Funds are available to help residents with  unresolved property repairs, mold remediation and other flood-related issues.  (The grant cannot be used to reimburse individuals for fixing their homes or for any expenses they incurred and paid for themselves).

Protecting Taxpayers' Money: Update
As part of my efforts to prevent irresponsible use of taxpayer money, Iast month, along with like-minded commissioners, I sponsored a measure to increase oversight of salary adjustments to current personnel last month.  President Stroger again vetoed our attempt to enforce basic reporting and approval requirements for  salary decisions, and the Board was unable to override his veto at this week's Board Meeting.

Despite this setback, I will continue to fight and look for ways to protect taxpayers' money and improve oversight and accountability at the county.
Green Initiatives at the Forest Preserve District
At this week's FPD Board Meeting, I sponsored a resolution to create a PC Power Management Policy in order to conserve energy at times when computers and monitors are not in use.

Additionally, the first step to implementing an electronic document management system to reduce environmental impact, and paper costs was approved.  A request for proposals will be issued to provide a way for all documents to be stored and  retrieved electronically.

Read more about County and Forest Preserve District "green" policies on my facebook page.
Red Light Cameras
At the County Board Meeting this week, a contract was approved to install red light cameras at 30 intersections in suburban Cook County.  Ironically, the approved contract is with an Arizona company, even though earlier in the meeting a majority of the County Board  voted to boycott Arizona businesses to chastise Arizona for their new immigration law (I opposed this measure).

I do not support the installation of red-light cameras at the county, and I did not support this contract.  I am currently working on legislation which  will prevent the installation of red-light cameras in communities that have banned them within their boundaries.

For the benefit of residents, I have listed locations in or near the 14th district
where red light cameras will be installed under this contract:
    • Lake Avenue and Ridge Road, Wilmette
    • Arlington Heights Road and Lake-Cook Road, Arlington Heights/Buffalo Grove

World Environment Day
Please join me and my staff this Saturday, June 5th at the Chicago Botanic Garden to celebrate World Environment Day, an annual day of conservation exploration and education.

Family drop-in activites will be run throughout the day at the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden, the Aquatic Garden and the Native Plant Garden.  Visitors will also have the opportunity to tour natural areas and see restoration efforts, as well as view demonstrations on organic vegetable gardening techniques.

My office will be participating in a community display about environmental efforts in government--we will be hosting the booth form 11am - 1pm.  We hope you will stop by to talk with us about our efforts, or any Cook County or Forest Preserve District issue.
