Barrington Township Open for Appeals
|
Barrington Township is now open for appeals at the Cook County Board of Review until March 18th. The Cook County Board of Review is the second level of appeals in appealing property taxes. Reductions can be made to property taxes based on evidence of incorrect representation of the property itself, or of similar properties in the area.
An appeal can be argued if a home's market value is overstated, or on "lack of uniformity." In a case of lack of uniformity, comparable homes within the same property classification, neighborhood code and with similar square footage should be submitted.
For more information on filing procedures and how to file a case, please visit the Board of Review Website.

Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program
|
At yesterday's County Board Meeting, authority was granted to the Circuit Court of Cook County to enter into contracts for an expanded Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program, expected to begin operation at the end of March. The three contracts include services for legal aid and mediation, housing counseling services, and community outreach.
This program addresses a situation continuing at an alarming rate. Illinois had the seventh-highest foreclosure rate in the nation in February, with more than 14,000 homes receiving at least one
foreclosure-related noticed last month. This is an equal opportunity crisis--the rising threat of foreclosure pervades every district and municipality in Cook County, placing thousands at risk of losing their homes if no assistance can be provided.
Under the Mediation Program, homeowners who have pending foreclosures in the Circuit Court
of Cook County will be given an opportunity to meet with on-site
housing counselors and on-site attorneys free of charge.
Housing
counselors will assist homeowners who may be eligible for a loan
modification and the attorneys will help homeowners determine if there are any remedies available to stop the foreclosure. If one exists, an attorney will be appointed to
represent the borrower in eligible cases.

Old Cook County Hospital Building Renovation
|
Yesterday, the County Board approved a $108 million plan to renovate the former Cook County Hospital. The old
hospital, opened in 1914, was replaced in 2002 by the newly built Stroger Hospital. This plan will convert the historic structure at 1835 W. Harrison St. into an administrative office building for
the Cook County Health & Hospitals System.
The total cost of the adaptive re-use is estimated at $107 million, with approximately $23 million anticipated to come from a Chicago tax increment financing (TIF) district. The rehabilititation effort is contingent on this TIF money, whose use must be approved by the Chicago City Council.
The three-year renovation will begin following the City Council's approval of the special taxing
district money.
