New Land Acquired by Forest Preserve District
At today's Forest Preserve District meeting, the Board approved the acquisition of over 54 acres of open land in unincorporated Hanover Township.  The District paid $5,765,103, the determined fair market value, for the site commonly known as Rolling Knolls Country Club.  This acquisition brings the current Forest Preserve District land holdings to over 68,250 acres.
2010 FPD Construction and Development Projects
The Forest Preserve District Board approved permission to solicit bids for 2010 construction and development projects.  Below are projects planned for 2010 in the 14th District:
  • Crab Tree  - Parking project
  • Deer Grove East - Walks, shelters and ramps
  • Deer Grove East - Bike trail
  • Spring Creek - Trail Improvements
  • North Branch Bike Trail Extension
  • North Branch Bike Trail Re-route
  • Northwest Resource Management - Repair/replace fence around facility
  • River Trail - Shoreline repair
  • River Trail Nature Center - Replace existing workshop/garage
  • River Trail Nature Center - Repair security fence around facility
  • Salt Creek Resource Management - Replace oil shed roof

North Branch Bicycle Trail Extension Update
This summer, the Forest Preserve District was awarded a Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) grant for the extension of the North Branch Bicycle Trail.  This project will extend the North Branch Bicycle Trail approximately four miles to the south and will connect to the City of Chicago's Bike Trail System.  

The CMAQ grant will pay for 80% of the project costs, a total of $355,200, and the District will be responsible for the remaining 20%. 
Chicago Botanic Garden Summer Internship Program
We are now accepting applications for the summer 2010 President John H. Stroger, Jr. Internship Program.  This program offers Cook County residents between the ages of 18 and 21 the opportunity to work with Garden staff members who serve as mentors.  Under the supervision of staff from the Garden's Center for Teaching and Learning, interns will gain experience working in one of the Garden's departments, ranging from communications to horticulture.

In the District
Palatine Township

Approved variation to reduce left side yard setback from 15 feet to 12 feet ; reduce right side yard setback from 15 feet to 10 feet; and reduce lot width from 150 feet to 100 feet to bring a detached garage and a single family residence into compliance in the R-4 Single Family Residence District.  The subject property consists of approximately 1.15 acres, located on the north side of Echo Lane, approximately 600 feet east of Quentin Road in Palatine Township.

Northfield Township

Approved amendment to local agency agreement for increased federal funding for the construction of the bridge improvements on Winnetka Road over Middle Fork North Branch Chicago River (west of Happ Road) in the Village of Northfield.  This construction is estimated to cost a total of $420,000, with reimbursement through the Federal Highway Administration totaling up to $242,214.  This federal funding was secured through the North Shore Council of Mayors American Recovery and Reinvestment ActProgram with support from the Village of Northfield.

Tallgrass Restoration, Schaumburg, Illinois - $28,256.16 for Herbicide Invasive Vegetation
 
Autumn Tree Care, Glenview, Illinois - $1,312.50 for Hazardous Tree Removal
