Sales Tax Repeal Update: Special Meeting Date Change
|
The Special Meeting to repeal the 1% Cook County Sales Tax has been changed from Monday, November 16th to
Tuesday, November 17th at 10:30am.
I have sponsored an
amendment to repeal the entire 1% sales tax increase; this proposed
amendment will be voted on at Tuesday's meeting. If approved, the rollback of the County
sales tax would take effect July 1, 2010.
As a result of a recent bill
passed by the State Legislature and signed by Governor Quinn, the number of Cook
County Commissioners needed to override a veto has changed from 14 to 11.
This change in the veto override requirement will help ensure that any
repeal passed by the County Board will be permanent.
Although
the sales tax will not be reduced until July of next year, the swift passage of
this amendment will ensure that the County's FY2010 budget be balanced with the
lower revenue estimates resulting from reduced tax receipts after the rollback
takes effect.
